My software work is primarily in C and its variants C++ and C#, with lots of perl, lsl script, Visual Basic, 3-D modeling in Solidworks, and lots of other languages and tools I'd rather forget, dating all the way back to the early 1970's. My first computer was the Rockwell Autonetics Recomp-II, a 1K word, 40-bit drum-memory military computer. I took it apart, rebuild it, and wrote John Conways "Game of Life" for it, from careful study of the Mathematical Games column in Scientific American. I still read and love Scientific American, which first published the rules for the game of Life in 1970. Yeah, I know. It dates me.

Projects
- Serious stuff
- Mentor Meta Map - clickable maps of areas where Volunteers are needed. (Hopefully complementary to Lum Pfhol's wonderful Mentor HUD). I hope my work on the Mentor Meta Map will help new and old Mentors alike to help "New Residents" more efficiently.
- Fun Stuff
- @Phone - dials a telephone from within Secondlife™ with text to speech using Kate and Paul voices, with true SMS and email.
- Kate and Paul Text to speech - Add decent synthesized text-to-speech to web pages and SecondLife™. Must be converted to 44Khz for use in SecondLife™, which is easy with Goldwave, a free audio editor.
Mentoring Philosophy
There are many ways to be a Mentor. Each Mentor I have met is different.
Personally, I enjoy meeting new residents and helping in the OI's and HI's. One-on-one personal attention is very useful to the lost and confused! I also like to collect 3 or 4 of them together, gather them all together on 'the other side' on an IM channel, and we all go off and explore places like Spaceport Alpha. We have fun by parachuting from the top of the Saturn moon rocket. They learn to Really Fly (with a flight band, and by riding a rocket), to find and follow me on the map (select me in the Map->Friends pulldown, and MINIMIZE the map, don't close it), and I usually end up helping set up their video by watching Mars and Earth under the rocket park. Video is new and wonderful when projected onto a ball !
I also encourage new residents to keep their home spot for a while,,such as Hanja or Ahern, so they develop a sense of community with others.
