Transcript of Benjamin Linden's office hours:

[15:04] Jacek Antonelli: Heyo, Ben!
[15:05] Digi Tal: yay!
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: oops sorry Jason
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: hi folks!
[15:05] Squirrel Wood: Hello Benjamin ^^
[15:05] Jason Swain: Np Ben
[15:05] Disconnected from in-world Voice Chat
[15:05] Squirrel Wood: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2876 ^^
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: I have a meeting that ran over
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: nice hat Jacek :-)
[15:05] Kooky Jetaime: heh
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: so did anyone happen to see that I posted the preview files for the new UI skin to the wiki a few days ago?
[15:06] Digi Tal: yes, using now
[15:06] Squirrel Wood: what was the url again?
[15:06] Kooky Jetaime: ooh
[15:06] Jacek Antonelli: hehe, thanks
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: oh great!
[15:06] Kooky Jetaime: thats an interesting bug
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_Visual_Update
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: what do you think Digi?
[15:06] Digi Tal: you have too much hard coded rgb in the xui files, remove the hardcoding and the colours all work right
[15:07] Benjamin Linden: which ones, Digi?
[15:07] Digi Tal: looks good
[15:07] Benjamin Linden: which colors, rather
[15:07] Coco Linden gave you Ah_Fuck.
[15:08] Digi Tal: basically a lot of ="1 1 1 1" and such that when removed or changed to ="TheNamedColorFromXML" allows colors_base.xml to properly specify what we should see
[15:08] Digi Tal: know what I mean?
[15:08] Benjamin Linden: can you point me to a specific place in the UI where it's an issue?
[15:08] Benjamin Linden: like is it the menus?
[15:09] Digi Tal: I will make up a notecard for you as I can illustrate it better
[15:09] Benjamin Linden: ok
[15:09] Jason Swain will just relog, brb
[15:09] Benjamin Linden: so everyone else knows, you can download that zip file from the wiki and install the updated textures and color settings into your existing SL install
[15:09] Benjamin Linden: and see the new look
[15:10] Digi Tal: yes, try it, very easy to do and easy on the eyes!
[15:10] Sabina Stenvaag: sorry--was late--what zip file may i ask?
[15:10] Benjamin Linden: oh good I'm glad you like it Digi. it's still an early version with lots of rough edges but I think it's a good start
[15:11] Jacek Antonelli: Woo, crashes. Fun times.
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: Sabina, we're talking about a zip file that you can download from the wiki that will let you preview the new look and feel for the viewer
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_Visual_Update
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: that has more info
[15:11] Sabina Stenvaag: ah Thansk!
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: Jacek, did the preview files crash your viewer?
[15:12] Jacek Antonelli: Nope, not using the preview files at the moment. Although I am running my custom-compiled viewer, which is not as stable as the official one
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: ah ok
[15:14] Sabina Stenvaag: downlading the zip file now goody!
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: so hopefully the rest of you will have a chance to check it out and give me feedback
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: or leave it in the wiki
[15:14] Sabina Stenvaag: screen shot is pretty! hee hee
[15:14] Sabina Stenvaag: gotta say about that ESC CSI client--i loved the tp history feature
[15:15] Jacek Antonelli: What all is in the zip file? XUI and image files, I'm guessing?
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: that's correct
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: yeah the ESC back button is very nice
[15:15] Squirrel Wood: Giovanna, your voice is active
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: what do folks think of the new sheep viewer?
[15:16] Sabina Stenvaag: the top bar wiht the 'buy button' is too big
[15:16] Sabina Stenvaag: takes up too much space
[15:16] Sabina Stenvaag: but pretty colors--like the one i jsut saw a screen shot of!
[15:16] Benjamin Linden: :-)
[15:16] Benjamin Linden: it's tough convincing developers that visual design matters :-)
[15:17] Sabina Stenvaag: i thihnk i still like this viewer--likley cause I'm jsut used to it 9the regular LL one)
[15:17] Sabina Stenvaag: inventory makes more sense to me than 'my stuff'
[15:18] Benjamin Linden: I sort of liked the "My Stuff" label -- I suspect it might make more sense to non-gamers
[15:18] Benjamin Linden: but I could be wrong about that
[15:18] Benjamin Linden: there aren't plans to change ours though :-)
[15:18] Sabina Stenvaag: ah good point--but I consider MYSLEF a non gamer--though I'm not tech illeterate either
[15:18] Sabina Stenvaag: can't type or spell though!
[15:19] Benjamin Linden: lol ok, point taken Sabina
[15:19] Squirrel Wood: if you have "My Stuff" you need something like "My crappy Stuff" and "Junk" and stuff ^^
[15:19] Benjamin Linden: UI text is hard to do well
[15:19] Jacek Antonelli: And "Other People's Stuff"? ;D
[15:19] Benjamin Linden: we've just been working on some changes to the About Land Access tab
[15:20] Benjamin Linden: and it's tricky coming up with the right phrasing for some of these things
[15:20] Squirrel Wood: Hmm
[15:20] Squirrel Wood: Would it be possible to add the current / max prim count for the parcel on top of the screen ?
[15:20] Sabina Stenvaag: oh that might be helpful!
[15:20] Squirrel Wood: where you have the sim name, parcel name and coordinates
[15:21] Jacek Antonelli: Ok, one last relog and I should be on fancy new UI!
[15:21] Benjamin Linden: excellent :-)
[15:21] Sabina Stenvaag: btw--i still dont fully understand the 'claimed" date on the about land tab
[15:21] Squirrel Wood: let me jira that real quick ^^
[15:21] Jacek Antonelli: Ahhh, shiny.
[15:21] Jacek Antonelli licks her screen.
[15:21] Benjamin Linden: where is the claimed date Sabina
[15:21] Jason Swain: is the new UI 100% only 1.18.3(5) or might 1.18.4(0) work?
[15:21] Sabina Stenvaag: on the about land tab
[15:22] Benjamin Linden: that's an interesting suggestion Squirrel, but do you think it might make things even more cluttered?
[15:22] Benjamin Linden: do you like the shiny, Jacek?
[15:22] Sabina Stenvaag: general sorry
[15:22] Sabina Stenvaag: General in about land
[15:22] Jacek Antonelli: I'm running on 1.18.4 right now, the UI preview seems to be working fine
[15:22] Benjamin Linden: maybe that's the date you took ownership?
[15:22] Sabina Stenvaag: really Jacek--i was putting the files in the non-rc viewer!
[15:22] Jason Swain: Thanks Jacek
[15:23] Jacek Antonelli: The shiny is a little bit excessive, I think. Distracting.
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: yes, we plan to tone down the chrome on the buttons
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: it makes the text hard to read
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: what about the general colors?
[15:23] Sabina Stenvaag: Benjamin--it seems to be odd--and inconsistant--WAIT--i'll bet it changes when the land is deeded to a group now that i think about it
[15:24] Benjamin Linden: that's probably right, Sabina
[15:24] Squirrel Wood: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2877
[15:24] Sabina Stenvaag: yep--thats prolly it! sorry!
[15:24] Jacek Antonelli: One thing I did like in the old viewer that this new update does not have -- is some strong visual difference between things that are buttons, and the background behind them
[15:25] Kooky Jetaime: Naaa
[15:25] Kooky Jetaime: we don't need more stuff there
[15:25] Jacek Antonelli: In the old one, it's blue buttons on gray background. But here, it's chrome on chrome
[15:25] Kooky Jetaime: Sorry squirrel
[15:25] Jacek Antonelli: I really like how the buttons light up when you hover the mouse over them, though :D
[15:26] Benjamin Linden: yes, we'll be working on creating more contrast between the buttons and the background too
[15:26] Benjamin Linden: good feedback Jacek
[15:27] Jason Swain: ok, Quick UI question on the new lag meter, if you click the narrow button (>>) then move the lag meter to the left of the screen, then click the widen button (<<) most of it is off screen, Shall I make a jira on this?
[15:28] Tork Avro: whatcha u guys doin?:)
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: is the new lag meter in RC Jason?
[15:28] Kooky Jetaime: new lag meter?
[15:28] Jason Swain: yes Ben
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: hi Tork, this is a user experience meeting, you're welcome to join us
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: hi Ciaran
[15:28] Tork Avro: kool ill listen in been playing or about 3 hours total
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: the RC client crashes my computer :-(
[15:28] Tork Avro: might be helpful
[15:28] Ciaran Laval: Hi Benjamin
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: so I haven't been able to use it
[15:29] Kooky Jetaime: Ben, thats... not a good thing
[15:29] Jason Swain: Does that sound like an issue I should jira?
[15:29] Kooky Jetaime: sure it does
[15:30] Jason Swain: Cool, just making it then ^^
[15:30] Jacek Antonelli: The new map icons are quite pleasing to the eye. A+ on the Infohub, Telehub, and Home symbols. I can't tell what the "Classifieds" button is supposed to resemble. Using "L$" for "Land for sale" might be a bit confusing, since a similar graphic is used for "Buy L$ online".
[15:31] Kooky Jetaime: heh, I need to try the new RC
[15:31] Jacek Antonelli ponders what would be better than L$. Maybe a "For Sale" sign, like they put in front of houses?
[15:31] Kooky Jetaime: I'm still on the old RC
[15:31] Jacek Antonelli: Might be hard to convey in 32x32 pixels, alas.
[15:31] Kooky Jetaime: how bout a little "For Sale" sign like the orange and black ones?
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: yes, Jacek, we went round and round on those icons
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: I'm glad you like the general style
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: but I agree there are some legibility/comprehension issues
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli nods
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: and actually these icons are 16x
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: so very small
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli: Oh dear
[15:32] Kooky Jetaime: uhm price tag?
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli: Yes, that is tough to work with
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: and we can't use english text on icons, for international purposes
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli: Right
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: we couldn't fit a price tag into the little jewel, Kooky :-)
[15:33] Kooky Jetaime: heh
[15:33] Kooky Jetaime: ok
[15:33] Sabina Stenvaag: brb--reloggin with new stuff
[15:33] Jacek Antonelli: Do you know what the image on the Classifieds button is? I'm really curious now
[15:34] Tork Avro: lol this is all greek to me :P
[15:34] Ciaran Laval: all geek Tork, all geek
[15:34] Jacek Antonelli: hehehe
[15:34] Kooky Jetaime: hahah
[15:34] Tork Avro: lol
[15:34] Kooky Jetaime: why you hiding way over there Ciaran?
[15:35] Ciaran Laval: There were no chairs I could use over there kooky
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: it's supposed to be a classifieds section of the newspaper
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: with an ad circled
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: :-)
[15:35] Jacek Antonelli: Ahh
[15:35] Ciaran Laval: Ahh I like that Ben
[15:35] Tork Avro: not many normal users seem to be at this landmark
[15:35] Kooky Jetaime: hmm
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: what's "normal" Tork?
[15:36] Tork Avro: he kooky doesnt jetaime mean i love u?
[15:36] Jacek Antonelli: We're all weirdos, I guess? :D
[15:36] Tork Avro: like u guys all of an impact on the game im just a citizen u guys the council
[15:37] Sabina Stenvaag: oh shiny yes!
[15:37] Jason Swain: Sorry Quick question, is that a bug or a new feature? (the question I asked earlier about the lag meter)
[15:37] Squirrel Wood: We're normal citizens too - just trying to help Linden Labs to make the client better ^^
[15:37] Benjamin Linden: Tork, everyone here is a Resident, just like you
[15:37] Kooky Jetaime: bug
[15:37] Benjamin Linden: everyone's welcome to join these meetings. I'm here to get your feedback about the User Interface
[15:37] Kooky Jetaime: new features are things not in the client that you'd like to see. bugs are everything else
[15:38] Benjamin Linden: Jason, I'd say it sounds like a bug
[15:38] Jason Swain: cool ok, bug it is, thanks ^^
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: Benjamin - you should add "Improvement" option to VWR
[15:38] Digi Tal gave you Viewer Visual Update Notes from Digi Tal.
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: it exists in other areas
[15:38] Tork Avro: KOOL whats that!
[15:38] Squirrel Wood: wear the flight feather to get a better flight experience ^^
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: because there are a lot of things that arn't bugs or new features but improvments
[15:38] Squirrel Wood: also it lets you fly above the cloud layer
[15:39] Kooky Jetaime: but since we're shoehorned into one or the other....
[15:39] Jason Swain: thats a great idea Kooky
[15:39] Tork Avro: THANKS SO MUCH
[15:39] Tork Avro: brb
[15:39] Kooky Jetaime face palms.. now I need to make a jira issue for that jira issue....
[15:39] Sabina Stenvaag: want commetns on the new look?
[15:39] Jason Swain: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2878
[15:39] Jacek Antonelli: Looking at inventory icons now. Love the icons for Script, Notecard, Calling Card, Texture, Sound, Trash, and the clothes (especially the underwear one. hehe! :D). The icons for Object / Composite Object aren't bad, but a bit too bright.
[15:40] Jason Swain: Now to try that new shinny (no pun) UI ^^
[15:40] Sabina Stenvaag: I liked the MORE transparent pie menus
[15:40] Jacek Antonelli: Ah, agreed there Sabina
[15:40] Tork Avro: squirell if u dont hvae dice i got some and a parrot
[15:40] Benjamin Linden: yes please Sabina
[15:40] Sabina Stenvaag: also I did like the search box at the top of the ESC CSI viewer, maybe
[15:41] Squirrel Wood: I've got waaaay too much stuff ^^
[15:41] Tork Avro: bummer
[15:41] Sabina Stenvaag: still lookin at it! but the colors are WAY better i think
[15:41] Tork Avro: wow
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: we're adding a search box to the viewer soon
[15:41] Tork Avro: i heard a gun shot
[15:41] Tork Avro: was that form the game
[15:41] Sabina Stenvaag: goody!
[15:41] Jacek Antonelli: Yes, Tork
[15:41] Tork Avro: WHEW
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: glad you like it overall Sabina
[15:42] Sabina Stenvaag: ok--my linden dollar balnce seems TOO light against the grey backgorund
[15:42] Tork Avro: anyways gott go eat rice a roni
[15:42] Jacek Antonelli: hehehe
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: w
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: wth?
[15:42] Benjamin Linden: lol
[15:42] Sabina Stenvaag: not sure if this was in the other viewers, but could the drop down menuse go a lil more transparent too?
[15:43] Benjamin Linden: yes Sabina, there are definitely some specific colors we need to work on
[15:43] Benjamin Linden: we might do some more transparency but we have to be careful with legibility
[15:43] Jacek Antonelli: I'm less thrilled about the Gesture and Animation icons. The blue blends in a bit too well with the blue-silver background. Hmm.
[15:43] Digi Tal: you can tinker with the colors_base.xml file yourselves to test too
[15:43] Jacek Antonelli: Heee! Just saw the icon for hairs. Oh, my, that is funny. :)
[15:44] Roof Doors: Kooky Jetaime is at the door.
[15:45] Sabina Stenvaag: im sure this has come up before--but for organizing inventory--theres gotta be some imporvements to it--not sure if thats a UI issue though.
[15:45] Jason Swain: brb, going to have a go with the new UI ^^
[15:45] Jacek Antonelli: I think this has been said elsewhere (on the wiki, perhaps), but the toxic green on the snapshot icon is rather intense. 8)
[15:45] Jacek Antonelli: hehe, hurry back Jason :D
[15:45] Jason Swain: ty
[15:45] Kooky Jetaime: Hmm I need to see if anyone jiraed a dedicated "Receiving" area
[15:45] Kooky Jetaime: brb
[15:46] Jacek Antonelli: Yeah, that would be nice, Kooky. An inbox, like.
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: I would *love* it if you guys played with the colors and came up with some suggestions
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: Sabina, inventory is *defintely* a UI issue
[15:46] Digi Tal: You have mine already :D
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: and we know we need to do something about it
[15:46] Squirrel Wood: hmm... suggestion... add an input field to the color picker for hex values ?
[15:46] Jacek Antonelli: Oooh, good one Squirrel
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: yes, thanks Digi
[15:46] Sabina Stenvaag: i would LOVBEto be able to change the name of several inventory objects at ONE time
[15:47] Digi Tal: Benjamin, does this update bring us closer to custom skinning or is that still off in the distance?
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: no, unfortunately there will be very little change to the underlying skinning architecture
[15:47] Jason Swain: Umm, its night time?
[15:48] Jacek Antonelli: Sabina: Could you got into that more, what you mean?
[15:48] Benjamin Linden: but this project helps us drive requirements into that larger effort
[15:48] Benjamin Linden: and also demonstrates what is possible today
[15:48] Digi Tal: cool, i did learn i can replace lots of files in my viewer so thank you
[15:48] Sabina Stenvaag: i've got a folder of items i only wear at soem sim--I want ALL items in that folder to be remamed at ONCE clothes, objects notecrds,
[15:49] Sabina Stenvaag: did that make sanse benjamine?
[15:49] Jacek Antonelli: Sabina: So, for example, you would want to be able to put "My Sim Name" at the front of the names of all those items?
[15:49] Jason Swain: It might just be my PC, but the text in the chat window is /really/ hard to read (UI = 0.75), mainly way too bright background
[15:49] Jacek Antonelli: Or some other text (that's just an example)
[15:49] Sabina Stenvaag: yes--or todays date
[15:50] Jacek Antonelli: That's a good idea
[15:50] Sabina Stenvaag: withOUT haveing to create another folder
[15:50] Benjamin Linden: yes Sabina, it does
[15:50] Benjamin Linden: yes, Jason, I agree
[15:50] Jacek Antonelli: Hello again, Tork!
[15:50] Tork Avro: HI:)
[15:50] Benjamin Linden: how was your rice a roni?
[15:50] Tork Avro: looked o history glad u guys got a god idea
[15:50] Tork Avro: HOT
[15:51] Jacek Antonelli: hehehe
[15:51] Sabina Stenvaag: also--duplicates get on my nerves--but i want SOME dupes--can we find duplicates in our inventoyr more easily?
[15:51] Jason Swain: I like the buttons though, I really hope that the leagablity will be fixed though
[15:51] Tork Avro: can i ask a question
[15:51] Tork Avro: may i *
[15:52] Benjamin Linden: we're working on revised buttons as we speak, jason
[15:52] Jacek Antonelli: That's another good idea, Sabina :D Maybe right click on something, and choose "Find Duplicates" -- would put a filter on the inventory, show all the objects with the same asset UUID?
[15:52] Kooky Jetaime: Ben - I'd love to be able to drag folders in inventory
[15:52] Jason Swain: on a posistive note, it looks very futuristic
[15:52] Kooky Jetaime: wait a sec
[15:52] Kooky Jetaime: theres something wrong with what I just said
[15:52] Kooky Jetaime: give me a min
[15:52] Benjamin Linden: what did you just say, Kooky?
[15:53] Kooky Jetaime: Copy folders
[15:53] Kooky Jetaime: it would be nice to copy folders in inventory
[15:53] Jacek Antonelli: Ah! Yes
[15:53] Squirrel Wood: Tork, if you have a question, just ask it ^^
[15:53] Jacek Antonelli: That would be nice too
[15:53] Jason Swain: I would say the chat text, would be unusable for myself, I cant stand lots of bright text
[15:53] Jason Swain: But the feel is really clean and tidy
[15:53] Tork Avro: i had just gotten go kart object then i dragged it to the ground and now its not on my list i guess i did something wrong
[15:54] Jason Swain: Menus are really nice too
[15:54] Ciaran Laval: Sounds like it was a no copy item Tork
[15:54] Tork Avro: HMMMM i see..whats a copy item sry rele new!
[15:54] Jacek Antonelli: Yes, the new UI definitely feels very clean and fresh
[15:54] Popgun (drag onto yourself) whispers: Use Mouselook (press 'M') to shoot me.
[15:54] Popgun (drag onto yourself) whispers: Choose 'Detach' from my menu to take me off.
[15:55] Popgun (drag onto yourself) whispers: Use Mouselook (press 'M') to shoot me.
[15:55] Popgun (drag onto yourself) whispers: Choose 'Detach' from my menu to take me off.
[15:55] Sabina Stenvaag: yes--i like it lots too
[15:55] Kooky Jetaime: tork that won't work here
[15:55] Benjamin Linden: glad you guys like it overall
[15:55] Benjamin Linden: we're working through the specific color problems
[15:55] Digi Tal: I have faith
[15:55] Benjamin Linden: I hope to have another preview package in a week or so
[15:55] Squirrel Wood: Things in Second Life sometimes have permissions set that may prevent you from doing certain things with them like, modify them or make copies of them.
[15:55] Jacek Antonelli: Cool, sounds great Ben
[15:56] Sabina Stenvaag: i like having as much of a view of SL world as possible--the more configurable i can get the consoles and lil pop up windows the better
[15:56] Digi Tal: Looking forward to it Ben.
[15:56] Jason Swain: I hate to sound negative, because I think that LL does a really good job, but will there still be support for the old colour system on the text?
[15:56] Kooky Jetaime: Benjamin - how bout getting a little more "Safe" context menus
[15:57] Kooky Jetaime: ie: moving "Delete" to the bottom, after a seperator
[15:57] Kooky Jetaime: I Managed to delete a new asset yesterday
[15:57] Digi Tal: Good idea Kooky
[15:58] Kooky Jetaime: And what bout a "Non-safe" delete
[15:58] Jacek Antonelli: Benjamin, do you happen to know if it's possible to access global settings (e.g. ChatHistoryBgColor) from XUI?
[15:58] Benjamin Linden: Jason, do you mean will you be able to go back to the purple buttons and dark gray windows?
[15:58] Jacek Antonelli: (access == read, I mean)
[15:58] Tork Avro: i already got it :)
[15:59] Benjamin Linden: we are moving delete, Kooky, a dev just picked that up today
[15:59] Kooky Jetaime: goodie
[15:59] Jason Swain: Just the text colour sycem, the black background with white text
[15:59] Jason Swain: the buttons are nice
[15:59] Benjamin Linden: we are hoping to provide some additional customizability for those colors
[16:00] Benjamin Linden: so you will hopefully be able to control them yourself
[16:00] Benjamin Linden: folks I just realized I have to run to another meeting
