- [15:02] Gooden Uggla: ugh, that means "suzy chapstick" is 65...
- [15:02] Oskar Linden: looks like it might be a light meeting today
- [15:02] Moon Metty: that's ok
- [15:02] Moon Metty: Maestro :)
- [15:02] Maestro Linden: hi guys
- [15:02] Moon Metty: ah, and Simon :)
- [15:02] Lares Carter: heya Maestro
- [15:02] SanderCohen1 Aeon: hi
- [15:03] Oskar Linden: I for some reason am kinda out of it today
- [15:03] Oskar Linden: so please bear with me
- [15:03] Oskar Linden: I woke up feeling a bit under the weather
- [15:03] Oskar Linden: we'll see how I do
- [15:03] Gooden Uggla: hope ya feel better
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: I am championing through it because you guys deserve the best
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: :-p
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: I got a new bbq for my house last night though
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: spent a few hours putting it together
- [15:04] Oskar Linden: then cooked meat
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: my parents japanese exchange students came over and was like "THIS is America"
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: hah
- [15:05] Gooden Uggla: :)
- [15:05] Opensource Obscure: :D
- [15:05] Moon Metty: hehe
- [15:05] Moundsa Mayo: Meat FTW!
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: anywho
- [15:05] Gooden Uggla: nothing like grilling your own carne asada...
- [15:05] Oskar Linden: server 1.42 made a full roll yesterday
- [15:06] Moon Metty: no major problems, i would say
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: it is now completely out there
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: that is good to hear
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: looks like simon rocked this one
- [15:06] Oskar Linden: looks out and sees no flaming torches or pitchforks
- [15:06] Gooden Uggla: .-'`'-. APPLAUSE APPLAUSE .-'`'-.
- [15:06] Moon Metty: we're saving them for later
- [15:07] Moundsa Mayo: And no pigs flying overhead.
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: that means we can segway right into server 1.44 with tcmalloc
- [15:07] Gooden Uggla: yes please
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: we have been instructed from the upaboves to make server versions go out a LOT faster
- [15:07] Gooden Uggla: tho flying pigs would be interesting too :)
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: not make them go faster, but go out faster ;-)
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: bascially new server releases once a week
- [15:07] Ima Mechanique: go faster would be nice too ;-)
- [15:08] Gooden Uggla: oskar, it goes without saying that that's a bad idea
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: weeeell...
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: it's going to be going that way
- [15:08] Gooden Uggla: good way to have the grid in a constant state of b0rk
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: or that is the path we are heading towards
- [15:08] Gooden Uggla: lovely
- [15:08] Opensource Obscure: yesterday I couldn't send snapshots at all from a couple of 1.42 sims on agni - - torley and another user as well - see comments at [1] - today i didn't re-try , maybe it was a temporary network issue
- [15:08] Issue Helper: [#SVC-5387
- http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-5387
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: it also has the potential to have serious issues fixed faster
- [15:08] Gooden Uggla: when is mono ge4tting updated?
- [15:09] Gooden Uggla: if philip wants that to take a week, i'll just start selling off the estate now
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: soon(lltm)
- [15:09] Maestro Linden: soonish, Gooden
- [15:09] Gooden Uggla: kk, thanks
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: let me explain
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: it'll work something like this
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: individual t=project teams are now responsible for their own QA
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: in private grids
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: then in special channels on ADITI
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: then in special channels on AGNI
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: so mono could be worked on for many weeks
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: in line with lots of other projects
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: but the releases would happen once a week to agni
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: in different areas
- [15:11] Ima Mechanique: hmm, sounds like you're now the equivalent of snowstorm for the server ;-)
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: so the grid would have a pilot roll on it at all tiems?
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: yes
- [15:11] Simon Linden: AFK a minute...
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: wow, that's... ummm...
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: now in a grand future I want estate owners to have control over which server version they want
- [15:11] Ima Mechanique: Gooden, the word you're looking for is "scary"
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: will i get banned if i call philip a retard?
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: they can be on a stable or experimental branch
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: we do recognize the need to get stuff out to agni faster
- [15:12] Gooden Uggla: yes oskar, IF (big IF) estate owners can cherrypick stable server versions, that would be ok
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: that's what I would like to see
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: and we are working towards the ability for em's to do that
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: a lot of thought and planning has gone into this model
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: so we'll see how things work in the next few weeks/months
- [15:13] Gooden Uggla: the exodus off the mainland would be a nice boost... except for the lab's revenues...
- [15:13] Moundsa Mayo: Rapid Upgrade will mean more eyes on the results with more defects discovered sooner. More false negatives to weed out, but I'd expect to see faster overall advancement of featureset and stability.
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: that's the hope
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: the false negatives are hard on us right now
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: since we try to follow up on all reports
- [15:14] Moundsa Mayo: Tougher on development and QA Lindens, though.
- [15:14] Gooden Uggla: oskar, simon, maestro, monty... do you see this as a way to get more out on the grid faster with fewer bugs?
- [15:14] Ima Mechanique: Oskar, can we asume the amount of change in the code will be proportionately smaller
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: yes
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: most new releases should contain just individual projects
- [15:14] Monty Linden: up until we need to do a DB schema change.
- [15:15] Monty Linden: then I'm gonig to sit back and watch
- [15:15] Monty Linden: :-)
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: :-D
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: it is certainly making our lives interesting
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: kelly linden has had a lot of good input on the model that we went with
- [15:15] Simon Linden: I'm really hoping we'll be able to get bug fixes out faster
- [15:15] Ima Mechanique: that will mitigate the speed I suppose, but I think weekly is a bit quick; fortnightly might be more sane
- [15:15] Monty Linden: is actually a bit skeptical. 1.40 was all an issue of quality *not* velocity
- [15:16] Monty Linden: and I'm still cranky about it
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: not every region will get updated every week
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: but new code will go to agni 1x/week
- [15:16] Techwolf Lupindo: before the encomnity tanked, a lot of shops was able to detect a rollout when daily sales when down on that day.
- [15:16] Lares Carter: does that mean there will be a bunch of different server versions on agni?
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: yes lares
- [15:16] Gooden Uggla: it sounds like a good way to introduce showstoppers and confuse the hell out of EO's that aren't paying attention all the time
- [15:16] Moundsa Mayo: Hopscotch on a checkerboard, or by 'geographical' ares?
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: by a bunch probably 3
- [15:17] Moundsa Mayo: [areas]
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: people in pilot rolls will stay on the edge
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: the rest will be random
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: pilot roll regions I mean
- [15:17] Oskar Linden: as requested
- [15:17] Gooden Uggla: being on a pilot roll just took on a new meaning
- [15:18] Lares Carter: there will be some overview like a list of regions that run the newest server version?
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: yes and no
- [15:18] Moundsa Mayo: So some might be updated weekly and some not for three or four, randomly.
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: it's always meant a willingness to be a guinea pig in some sense
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: an overview lares?
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: like a ay to tell what has what?
- [15:19] Gooden Uggla: will a weekly pilot region list accompany the release notes?
- [15:19] Lares Carter: do i have to tp around and check the about second life to find a region or will there be a list on the wiki to tell me what regions run the new server version for new feature xy?
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: probably lares
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: although we could have a set of sandboxes set up to be in each specific version
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: that's an idea
- [15:20] Lares Carter: sounds like a good idea
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: I'll float that up
- [15:20] Gooden Uggla: naming the region by version yes
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: any other thoughts / concerns?
- [15:21] Lares Carter: is there some more direct way to suggest things to fix than jira? like talking directly to the scrum in charge for server changes?
- [15:21] Gooden Uggla: yes, can you start a list of regions that can never be on aq pilot roll please?
- [15:21] Moundsa Mayo: Region-to-region version differentials will lead to a much larger category of reported errors. False negatives based on expected experience to weed out what are actually just phase differences.
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: well there is no scrum leader in charge of server changes
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: scrum leaders have individual projects
- [15:22] Moundsa Mayo: [that are]
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: jira will be going away soon for something else
- [15:22] Maestro Linden: scrum teams will be holding triages to look at Jira issues
- [15:22] Gooden Uggla: how comforting
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: we'll see how it works
- [15:23] Moon Metty: can someone edit the tetris game out of the arena please?
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: I've heard some good things
- [15:23] Entering god: mode, level 200
- [15:23] Moundsa Mayo: Agreed, Moon - would be nice to have a clear field of view.
- [15:23] Lares Carter: hmm, i am excited to see how this will work out
- [15:24] Moon Metty: ahh thanks
- [15:24] Ima Mechanique: hmm, personally like it edited OFF the sim ;-)
- [15:24] Flynn Tigerpaw: yes, less clutter would be nice
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: yeah there is a lot of junk here
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: but whatever :-)
- [15:25] Techwolf Lupindo: Isn't this all ANSCII junk?
- [15:25] Yuu Nakamichi: perhaps a less jarring grass texture? :)
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: the tetris thing was forest klaar
- [15:25] Yuu Nakamichi: while we're at it
- [15:25] Flynn Tigerpaw: plywood cubes are an eyesore
- [15:25] Moundsa Mayo: And make these edible mushrooms?
- [15:25] Moon Metty: :)
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: oh that reminds me
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: I was going to overhaul the Second Life BETA group
- [15:26] Ima Mechanique: clear out the metaphorical plywood from it?
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: I wanted to stop the SPAM going into group chat
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: so I was going to remove that ability from the everybody group
- [15:26] Techwolf Lupindo: What spam?
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: and create a group that can chat in group chat
- [15:26] Gooden Uggla: cool
- [15:27] Flynn Tigerpaw: nice
- [15:27] Gooden Uggla: good idea, i do that in 2 large groups myself
- [15:27] Moon Metty: that's a good idea, i never really follow the chat there
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: it'll require a set of officers to allow people to get added to the chat group or removed if they're being naughty
- [15:27] Techwolf Lupindo: thre a few groups that ahave done that.
- [15:28] Moon Metty: on the other hand, in the old BSI group the chat was very productive
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: so if you think you can handle the pressure of helping me officiate group chat ping me on AGNI
- [15:28] Opensource Obscure: you also will raise the group number limit to 26 , correct ? : ))
- [15:28] Moon Metty: can't evryone just behave ?
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: wish I could
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: the sl beta group chat is usually productive
- [15:28] Moundsa Mayo: I'll behave from now on B^(
- [15:28] Opensource Obscure: yeah, i like the group chat. i'm actually surprised
- [15:28] Ima Mechanique: lol Moon, if only
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: it usually only gets to about 4/100 on the AWG scale
- [15:28] Opensource Obscure: anyway
- [15:29] Lares Carter: allmighty oskar already raised the group limit, on aditi i am in 29 groups ;P
- [15:29] Flynn Tigerpaw: AWG?
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: it's just technical people who love SL talking about issues.
- [15:29] Ima Mechanique: hmm American Wire Guage?
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: I love it :-)
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: architecture working group ;-)
- [15:30] Techwolf Lupindo: I am in 35 groups here.
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: yeah... that's a bug in our import scripts
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: it dumps over all groups from agni
- [15:30] Gooden Uggla: if you haven't moderated a large group before, it means not closing it so you can watch trtaffic, and will generally mean anyone using viewer 2 shouldn't apply unless they like chicklets a lot
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: even if you have dropped and left a ton
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: it just does an append on this end
- [15:30] Techwolf Lupindo: Too bad it doesn't pick up group chat from maingraid. Would be a great way to get more chatting done. lol
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: I love it out here on ADITI when I want to invite someone to a new group and they have to leave like 30 groups to get under the limit where they can add a new one
- [15:31] Lares Carter: hehe
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: I think latif was working on a cross grid group chatter
- [15:32] Moundsa Mayo: Opt-in, one hopes B^)
- [15:32] Moon Metty: on agni the irc bridge works great
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: so... we've been poking at display names this week on ADITI
- [15:32] Lares Carter: its public beta yet?
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: it's enabled but needs a viewer to work right
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: public beta next tuesday
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: we're doing a linden pile on out here tomorrow
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: so if you see new lindesn be nice to them
- [15:33] Ima Mechanique: ick, that'll mean v2.1?
- [15:33] Gooden Uggla: i wonder who the first simon impostor will be
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: they're not all as easy going as I am :-D
- [15:33] Gooden Uggla: they always imitate the rockstars...
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: yeah, be careful with the linden impoersonating stuff. I'm not sure how heavy handed support will be about that
- [15:33] Simon Linden: I was thinking of creating a clone bot army
- [15:34] Gooden Uggla: i'm assuming that rersi team will be ruthless
- [15:34] Flynn Tigerpaw: probably ban everyone who does
- [15:34] Moundsa Mayo: I was only ASKING last week!!
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: hah... I just thought of something funny
- [15:34] Moon Metty: hey Ambroff :)
- [15:34] Ambroff Linden: howdy
- [15:34] Opensource Obscure: : )
- [15:34] Techwolf Lupindo: Oooo...flower
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: the support team is the only one without ruth ;-)
- [15:34] Lares Carter: heya Ambroff
- [15:34] SanderCohen1 Aeon: hi
- [15:35] Gooden Uggla: hiya ambroff, nice foliage
- [15:35] Ima Mechanique: hi flower pot
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: and a large welcome to Ambroff Linden
- [15:35] Yuu Nakamichi: hehe
- [15:35] Ambroff Linden: thanks :)
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: Ambroff is out here testing the account auto updater scripts I imagine
- [15:35] Flynn Tigerpaw: does Ambroff need to be watered?
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: so in the near future when you can update your own accounts here by changing a password and waiting a day you can thank ambroff
- [15:35] Techwolf Lupindo: I can do that Flynn
- [15:35] Ima Mechanique: or looking for good compost
- [15:35] Techwolf Lupindo: ;-)
- [15:36] UNbrella, gray: whispers: Click unbrella to toggle rain on/off
- [15:36] Moon Metty: lol Yuu
- [15:36] Flynn Tigerpaw: I can't wait for the account update feature
- [15:36] Yuu Nakamichi: hello :)
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: looks like ambroff is getting watered
- [15:36] Gooden Uggla: i'll send a box of jobe's sticks if you get auto-refresh working
- [15:36] Yuu Nakamichi: it's pretty sunny in SF I heard
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: nice one Yuu
- [15:37] Moon Metty: points at the OH agenda
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: so yeah, display names
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: once I get the details on the public beta I'll forward them along
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: it'll basically be, download this vwr, log onto ADITI. display your name
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: I might create some special accounts if people want them
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: to test the new naming things with scripts and stuff
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: when the time comes ping me if you want one set up
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: since there is no public account creation thing yet
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: you all saw the link kelly set up right?
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: for using LSL with the new display names
- [15:39] Techwolf Lupindo: um..no.
- [15:39] Opensource Obscure: in the wiki - yeah
- [15:39] Techwolf Lupindo: oh.
- [15:39] Lares Carter: jup, i did
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Display_Names/LSL
- [15:39] Gooden Uggla: yes
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: cool
- [15:39] Eddi Decosta: sorry im late
- [15:39] Moon Metty: the page is unclear to me
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: his OH is Monday morning at 9 if anyone wants to ping him with questions
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: if it is unclear go ask kelly :-)
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: so yeah. that's about all I had to cover specifically
- [15:40] Gooden Uggla: people wake up at 9am on purpose? really?
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: there were a few things in any other business
- [15:40] Psi Merlin: Yes, Ii'm thinking I have some checking and scripting to do - since I make quite heavy use of sensors and names.
- [15:41] Ambroff Linden: only kelly, not "normal" people
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: SVC-5040
- [15:41] Issue Helper: [#SVC-5040
- http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-5040
- [15:41] Gooden Uggla: ah... gotcha
- [15:41] Moon Metty: ah, 5040
- [15:41] Ambroff Linden: :)
- [15:41] Moon Metty: the jira itself doesn't give a lot of info
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: sims losing power eh?
- [15:41] Moon Metty: but we know what's wrong, right?
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: without good info it's hard to follow up on these things
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: what are your thoughts?
- [15:42] Moon Metty: Oskar, 15 minutes after i saw that jira, i called you
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: called me what? :-)
- [15:42] Moon Metty: and we found out what was wrong
- [15:42] Techwolf Lupindo: Need some good benchmarks we can do as end users to see if things tanked.
- [15:42] Moon Metty: so then you assigned it to yourself
- [15:42] Moon Metty: remember?
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: no :-(
- [15:42] Moon Metty: ah
- [15:43] Moon Metty: well, it's because of the hardware
- [15:43] Moon Metty: class 7 gives less than half the script time
- [15:43] Moon Metty: or speed
- [15:43] Moon Metty: compared to class 5
- [15:43] Gooden Uggla: the lab did that on purpose?
- [15:43] Moon Metty: Maestro set up a clone of our region here on aditi, class 5
- [15:44] Moon Metty: the test still reproduces
- [15:44] Yuu Nakamichi: hm
- [15:44] Moon Metty: i'm sure it's know inside the lab, Soft triaged it
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: I don't think we did that on purpose
- [15:45] Yuu Nakamichi: does class 7 have twice as many cores as a class 5 server?
- [15:45] Maestro Linden: that reminds me, I mentioned it to Kelly today. He'd like a copy of Moon's benchmarking tool (I can send it to him)
- [15:45] Ambroff Linden: Yuu: yes, class 7 has 8 cores, and something like 24GB of ram
- [15:46] Moon Metty: sure Maestro
- [15:46] Gooden Uggla: i would think that server would run better...
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: moon did you add svc-6235 to any other business?
- [15:47] Issue Helper: [#SVC-6235
- http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/svc-6235
- [15:47] Gooden Uggla: will TCmalloc help the threading of scripts for that?
- [15:47] Moon Metty: yeah, i did
- [15:48] Moon Metty: but i understand you can't say anything about it
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: is the 'why' not answered in [2] ?
- [15:48] Moon Metty: no
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: sorry
- [15:48] Maestro Linden: mm maybe, Gooden.
- [15:48] Moon Metty: it doesn't mention the appendix "Resident" at all
- [15:48] Lares Carter: Sigma Avro did add it
- [15:49] Gooden Uggla: moon, philip wants it because it's a"cool feature"
- [15:49] Gooden Uggla: welcome back to the old days
- [15:49] Moon Metty: the LSL wiki mentions the appendix
- [15:49] Moon Metty: but not the rest, it just says "User123"
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: display names is a cool feature
- [15:50] Moon Metty: display names can be cool yes
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: I don't know exactly why we are doing away first name / last name
- [15:50] Moon Metty: but why "Resident"?
- [15:50] Flynn Tigerpaw: very cool. this is my 5th alt, took 5 tries to get a name right
- [15:50] Gooden Uggla: as long as it doesn't break a lotta content, i'm neutral
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: I don't know
- [15:50] Moon Metty: noone seems to be able to explain
- [15:50] Bronson Blackadder: because resident sounds better then freeloader
- [15:50] Ambroff Linden: because it doesn't matter? the Resident is just for supporting legacy scripts and old viewers. Does it matter what it is?
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: being able to have just one name to remember is nice
- [15:51] Techwolf Lupindo: Don't do away with last names, "Resident" makes SL look bad.
- [15:51] Gooden Uggla: but lab resources should be put on making mono run properly, that's the largest single thing that screws with "the experience"
- [15:51] Moon Metty: it does matter Ambroff
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: I don't agree TL
- [15:51] Moon Metty: apppending something useless is only going to cause trouble
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: no
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: something had to be there
- [15:51] Moon Metty: why?
- [15:51] Ambroff Linden: right, it is useless. But without it legacy scripts would break.
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: we can't do away with it from an infrastructure pov
- [15:52] Gooden Uggla: let me ask this... i own contest boards for the beach club, will they be broken by display names?
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: Resident is a fine option
- [15:52] Flynn Tigerpaw: It sounds like everyone new gets a default "Resident" last name instead of having to choose one?
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: I doubt it Gooden
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: but I'll want to know if they do :-)
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: every new account
- [15:52] Monty Linden: we should, you know, beta test it
- [15:52] Gooden Uggla: as long as content isn't broken, then ok
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: will be 'usernamehere' resident
- [15:53] Moon Metty: that's not what Simon Plasma says in the jira
- [15:53] Yuu Nakamichi: is it UserName Resident or User.Name Resident?
- [15:53] Gooden Uggla: if we have to rescropt every game and contest board, or upgrade to POS viewer 2, it's a dealbreaker
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: and who is simon plasma?
- [15:53] Flynn Tigerpaw: that will make signing up easier, no more list of nothing but stupid last names
- [15:53] Moon Metty: someone who tried to expllain
- [15:53] Gooden Uggla: some guy with a cool lastr name
- [15:54] Moon Metty: a Linden explanation would be better of course
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: all surnames on new accounts will be Resident
- [15:54] Maestro Linden: Yuu: it'll be "UserName Resident"
- [15:54] Simon Linden: Flynn - exactly. We loose a _lot_ of people during the registration process when they have to pick out a name. Lots of confusion
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: the username will be username.resident
- [15:54] Yuu Nakamichi: Meastro - oh
- [15:54] Moon Metty: so the username will look like a strong password?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: until you change it your display name will be Username Resident
- [15:55] Gooden Uggla: SL will no longer be an IQ test at signup
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: with the option to change how your name is displayed
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: you already have a ton of people stuck with charry87 Surname
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: or whatever
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: then they either use that and look like a noob
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: or create a new account
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: we have like a billion unused accounts in our db
- [15:56] Moundsa Mayo: Can I have their stuff?
- [15:56] Eddi Decosta: billion?
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: the ability for a person to have one account and change the name that is displayed is a very flexible approach
- [15:56] Moon Metty: hrmmm, is the username going to be "username resident" or "firstname.lastname resident"?
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: username.resident
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: i imagine a lotta babes with sexually oriented names (ok, they're mostly guys, still...) will like the change
- [15:56] Ambroff Linden: no wait
- [15:56] Ambroff Linden: once this goes live
- [15:57] Moon Metty: see? there's a lot of confusion
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: you will be moon.metty
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: a new user that creatse an account with the can choose any username
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: say
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: mike123
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: just come by next week and check it out
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: and mike's username will be mike123
- [15:57] Eddi Decosta: i could take Yann Dufaux in display name but i allways have eddi.decosta un username ..
- [15:57] Moon Metty: i will be "moon.metty resident"?
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: legacy LSL scripts and old viewers will display mike123 Resident
- [15:57] Yuu Nakamichi: Moon, Maestro just said UserName Resident (without the dot)
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: but there username is just mike123
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: no moon
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: you will always be moon.metty
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: for *existing* accounts, like Moon Metty
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: the username will become
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: moon.metty
- [15:57] Moon Metty: ok
- [15:57] Yuu Nakamichi: gotcha
- [15:57] Ambroff Linden: and legacy LSL scripts and old viewers will continue to display Moon Metty
- [15:58] Maestro Linden: "UserName Resident" will be the legacy name returned by old scripts and seen by pre-displa-name viewers
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: right
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: but there username is just UserName
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: s/there/their/g
- [15:58] Moon Metty: so then explain to me why "Resident" has to be added
- [15:58] Gooden Uggla: moon, basically they're adopting the yahoo account method
- [15:58] Gooden Uggla: one name signup
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: the Resident is just added so that existing lsl scripts that use legacy apis to get user names will still work
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: because they expect to get a string like "Firstname Lastname"
- [15:58] Maestro Linden: and the default display name would be UserName (no "Resident" as oskar said)
- [15:58] Ambroff Linden: that's all
- [15:58] Gooden Uggla: last name is "resident" because the system wants 2 names, so it's now "resident"
- [15:59] Simon Linden: Newbie seemed harsh :)
- [15:59] Moon Metty: hehe Simon
- [15:59] Moon Metty: it would be incorrect after some time too
- [15:59] Oskar Linden: and IncomeGenerators was too obvious ;-)
- [15:59] Gooden Uggla: coulda been "nettard"
- [15:59] Flynn Tigerpaw: hehe
- [15:59] Psi Merlin: so letting you pick a lastname in palce or resident at signup would also keep things working - and would look nicer
- [15:59] Yuu Nakamichi: and Pawns
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: lindens will still be Linden surnamed
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: oskar.linden
- [16:00] Moon Metty: well, i think the "Resident" part is a big mistake
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: newname.linden
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: it works moon
- [16:00] Moon Metty: eventhouggh i don't seem to understand it fully lol
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: it's not a big mistake
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: or even a mistake
- [16:00] Ambroff Linden: why Moon? after a while it will go away completely, once all viewers support the new display name apis
- [16:00] Moon Metty: it won't crash script, if that's what you mean
- [16:00] Ambroff Linden: and scripts start using the new name api
- [16:00] Ambroff Linden: it's just for the transition period
- [16:00] Oskar Linden: scripts will work. it is forwards and backwards compatible
- [16:00] Ambroff Linden: that's all the "Resident' thing is for
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: and ding ding ding
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: 4 o'clock is here
- [16:01] Eddi Decosta: oh nice!!!
- [16:01] Maestro Linden: .. drat
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: back to your corners
- [16:01] Ambroff Linden: hah
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: give it a try next week moon and we'll talk in here next week about peoples thoughts
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: :-)
- [16:01] Simon Linden: FWIW next week we're going to try a little test at the end of office hours
- [16:01] Oskar Linden: good meeting guys
- [16:01] Eddi Decosta: i think of that? a transition periode of 2 weekd where yyou cant run or build a a script
- [16:01] Eddi Decosta: ??
- [16:01] Moon Metty: sure Oskar :)
- [16:02] Oskar Linden: have a good weekend
- [16:02] Opensource Obscure: you too
- [16:02] Opensource Obscure: take care you all
- [16:02] Moundsa Mayo: Thanks Oskar, Maestro, Simon, Monty, Ambroff!
- [16:02] Oskar Linden: inserts a witty exit statement here
