[2014/09/11 15:00] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Hi guys
[2014/09/11 15:00] Rex Cronon: hi maestro
[2014/09/11 15:00] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Hello, Maestro.
[2014/09/11 15:01] MartinRJ Fayray: hello Maestro
[2014/09/11 15:01] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Hello, Whirly and Martin.
[2014/09/11 15:01] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Hello, Caleb.
[2014/09/11 15:01] MartinRJ Fayray: hi
[2014/09/11 15:01] Caleb Linden: hi hi
[2014/09/11 15:01] Margithe: Hi!
[2014/09/11 15:01] Rex Cronon: hi caleb
[2014/09/11 15:01] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Hello, Inara.
[2014/09/11 15:01] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Hello, Rex.
[2014/09/11 15:01] Rex Cronon: how r u doing yuzuru
[2014/09/11 15:02] Rex Cronon: hi yuzuru
[2014/09/11 15:02] Inara Breen: Hi, Yuzuru, Maestro, Caleb, all new arrivals....
[2014/09/11 15:02] Rex Cronon: hi inara
[2014/09/11 15:03] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): I am writing html about new product.
[2014/09/11 15:03] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): How's everybody doing?
[2014/09/11 15:04] Margithe: <-- new PC, does great XD
[2014/09/11 15:04] Rex Cronon: maestro. u should be wearing some attachemts that leave a trail of particles while u rotate up there:)
[2014/09/11 15:04] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): heh, maybe some sparklers attached to my shoes or something
[2014/09/11 15:05] Rex Cronon: i was wondering why my logger/streamer didn't work last week on man grid
[2014/09/11 15:05] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): I'm writing the code about texture making.
[2014/09/11 15:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): a new downloadable product, yuzuru?
[2014/09/11 15:06] Rex Cronon: for the new particles yuzuru?
[2014/09/11 15:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group#Agenda here's our agenda
[2014/09/11 15:06] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): not yet.
[2014/09/11 15:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I don't have much this week
[2014/09/11 15:06] Lucia Nightfire: been hearing that a lot this year, lol
[2014/09/11 15:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group#Any_Other_Items if any of you have other topics, feel free to add them here
[2014/09/11 15:07] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): For the updates..
[2014/09/11 15:08] Rex Cronon: ok. i would like objects to be able to tp anywhere on the grid....
[2014/09/11 15:08] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): nothing new for main channel this week (as you'd expect, as it was running the same versions as the RCs last week)
[2014/09/11 15:08] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): All three RCs got a new maintenance project
[2014/09/11 15:09] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): which fixes some crash modes (which are always welcome), and addressed some obscure access issue with skill gaming regions
[2014/09/11 15:09] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): the access issue was.. if a Linden entered the skill gaming region using their special admin powers, they'd be unable to leave it :)
[2014/09/11 15:10] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): anyway, it wouldn't have affected people normally
[2014/09/11 15:10] Lucia Nightfire: Rex, unless its object you own tp'ing to land you own, I can see that being abused big time, heh
[2014/09/11 15:10] raluk Mint: hello guys
[2014/09/11 15:10] Lucia Nightfire: not that certain tpv's don't have remote rezzing capability already...
[2014/09/11 15:10] Rex Cronon: hello raluk
[2014/09/11 15:10] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Okay, that's all I have for updates
[2014/09/11 15:11] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): For upcomnig stuff, we're working on group chat improvements
[2014/09/11 15:11] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): but there's nothing new on aditi this week to play with
[2014/09/11 15:11] Rex Cronon: lucy. u know how dangerous is to rez things? nvertheless we can still rez them;)
[2014/09/11 15:12] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I wonder.. for "Object TP", would it be appropriate to have a new parcel control?
[2014/09/11 15:12] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): it seems like that would be different than object build or entry
[2014/09/11 15:12] Lucia Nightfire: lol
[2014/09/11 15:12] Lucia Nightfire: if theres any land control updates for anything Hell will be freezing over
[2014/09/11 15:13] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I think it would have to be disabled by default
[2014/09/11 15:13] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Kinda like group ban as a new group ability
[2014/09/11 15:13] Margithe: unless it's "de-rez everything outside parcel". that one would be popular.
[2014/09/11 15:13] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): like the parcel privacy feature, except for obejcts too?
[2014/09/11 15:13] Rex Cronon: maestro. u lean like a checkbox that allows objects to tp on to a parcel?
[2014/09/11 15:14] Lucia Nightfire: Whirls will have to find that mistitled jira as I couldn't find it last time
[2014/09/11 15:14] Margithe: yes, but reverse
[2014/09/11 15:14] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Yes Rex, under parcel options
[2014/09/11 15:14] Rex Cronon: u mean like*
[2014/09/11 15:14] Margithe: you'd see everything that's on parcel, but no neighbours.
[2014/09/11 15:14] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): would you want to see avatars without the objects they're sitting on, though?
[2014/09/11 15:14] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): okay
[2014/09/11 15:14] Margithe: i would like to see nothing... except whats on the current parcel i'm on.
[2014/09/11 15:15] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): how about terrain?
[2014/09/11 15:15] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): trim it at the border?
[2014/09/11 15:15] Margithe: terrain is good, and linden trees.
[2014/09/11 15:15] Lucia Nightfire: that request has already been accepted, just don't knwo what number it is
[2014/09/11 15:15] Rex Cronon: i think it would look weird for land to stop at parcel border
[2014/09/11 15:15] Margithe: really? Thats nice. I an see that potentially revitilising mainland
[2014/09/11 15:16] Lucia Nightfire: Rex, he meant adjacent region terrain
[2014/09/11 15:16] kyleetehkitty: I would have kept mainland if I could block out the neighbors objects
[2014/09/11 15:16] Margithe: people enjoy the terrain, but not so much their neighbours garbage.
[2014/09/11 15:16] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I guess the background would look like that default Windows XP wallpaper then
[2014/09/11 15:16] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): green rolling hills
[2014/09/11 15:16] Margithe: nothing wrong with green rolling hills!
[2014/09/11 15:16] Lucia Nightfire: I would enjoy mainland more if I could not see neighbors crap too
[2014/09/11 15:17] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Yeah, I can definitely see the appeal for mainland
[2014/09/11 15:17] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): for private estates too, in some cases
[2014/09/11 15:17] Margithe: right now some TPV's allow derezzing specific stuff, but thats for you only. This wold affect every visitor on the parcel.
[2014/09/11 15:17] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I wonder if it would make sense to disallow that at the estate level for private estates, though
[2014/09/11 15:17] Whirly Fizzle: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-5671
[2014/09/11 15:17] Rex Cronon: maybe u should have a list of avatars that u can always see their parcels and their objects?
[2014/09/11 15:17] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): if the estate manager wants to maintain some sort of togetherness
[2014/09/11 15:17] kyleetehkitty: I am sure my boss would like the option to disable it globally on his estates xD
[2014/09/11 15:17] Margithe: nah, let them have it too. It's good, it's good for people with crappy computers, it makes things look better...
[2014/09/11 15:18] Margithe: it would be much more accurate than drawing range, and everyone can then decide the "weight2 of their own land
[2014/09/11 15:18] kyleetehkitty: yeah
[2014/09/11 15:19] kyleetehkitty: On the private estate end of things for those who do third party rentals, It would stop alot of the neighborhood conflicts over the mesh treehouse down the street lagging them to death
[2014/09/11 15:19] Margithe: if i super-optimize my beach for fast rendering for visitors, then the neighbour can crap it up with millions of 1024 textures.
[2014/09/11 15:20] Lucia Nightfire: even my dashboard isn't picking that jira up...
[2014/09/11 15:21] Rex Cronon: there is one little problem with making things invisible. u would be crashing into a log of things...
[2014/09/11 15:21] Whirly Fizzle: Huh? I posted it
[2014/09/11 15:21] Whirly Fizzle: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-5671
[2014/09/11 15:21] Margithe: if we can't have coherent continuity on mainland, then it would be nice to be able to opt out.
[2014/09/11 15:21] Lucia Nightfire: I know, I'm not seeing it in my dashboard though
[2014/09/11 15:21] Lucia Nightfire: I'm watching it too
[2014/09/11 15:21] Rex Cronon: into a lot*
[2014/09/11 15:21] Margithe: aaahh!
[2014/09/11 15:22] Duckie Dickins: Maybe we need the opposite of "Restrict gesture and object sounds to this parcel" where you won't hear gestures and sounds from neighboring parcels.....someone didn't like my ocean buoys because they made a small ringing noise as they bob in the water and insisted I have to limit my sounds to my own parcel which I they could just mute them....but a parcel setting where they could not allow sounds from other parcels to enter theirs would also have worked and saved them from threatening to AR me. lol
[2014/09/11 15:24] Duckie Dickins: it would be like "Isolate this parcel from gesture and object sounds from other parcels"
[2014/09/11 15:25] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I wonder if changing the meaning of that option to make the silencing two-ways would cause problems
[2014/09/11 15:25] Lucia Nightfire: I thought that option was dual operational
[2014/09/11 15:25] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): or if that's what people want it for in every case
[2014/09/11 15:25] Lucia Nightfire: as I use it on my parcels and don't hear other parcel owner's objects
[2014/09/11 15:25] Lucia Nightfire: like a neighboring waterfall in one area, heh
[2014/09/11 15:25] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): /me doesn't remember how it works
[2014/09/11 15:26] Margithe: so it already works both ways?
[2014/09/11 15:26] Whirly Fizzle: I thought it was one way only
[2014/09/11 15:26] Duckie Dickins: yeah I thought it was one way only myself
[2014/09/11 15:26] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I know that 'restrict voice to this parcel' isolates you in both directions
[2014/09/11 15:26] Margithe: i also thought it worked one way, because the whinery from the neighbour was persistant.
[2014/09/11 15:26] Lucia Nightfire: I'm looking at it now in said region for both parcels
[2014/09/11 15:26] Lucia Nightfire: my has it on, theirs has it off
[2014/09/11 15:27] Duckie Dickins: well I guess we could rez something noisy here and try it
[2014/09/11 15:27] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): go for it
[2014/09/11 15:28] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): just enabled 'restrict sound and ..'
[2014/09/11 15:28] Rex Cronon: don't rez batman cube...
[2014/09/11 15:28] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): /me doesn't have any fun boxes
[2014/09/11 15:29] Object: Hello, Avatar!
[2014/09/11 15:29] Object: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:29] Object: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:30] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:30] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:30] Rex Cronon: maybe baker has something:)
[2014/09/11 15:30] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:30] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:30] Baker Linden: Ido not
[2014/09/11 15:30] Baker Linden: :)
[2014/09/11 15:30] Baker Linden: sorry
[2014/09/11 15:30] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I can't hear the box now
[2014/09/11 15:30] Baker Linden: :(
[2014/09/11 15:30] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): it's outside this parcel and in the adjacent one
[2014/09/11 15:30] Lucia Nightfire: I already tested yet again here
[2014/09/11 15:31] Lucia Nightfire: not hearing stuff on unrestricted parcels, from this parcel
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:31] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): the outside parcel does not have "Restrict gesture and object sounds to this parcel" set
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:31] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): just enabled outside sounds in this meeting parcel
[2014/09/11 15:31] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): now I hear it
[2014/09/11 15:31] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): off
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:31] Duckie Dickins: ahh
[2014/09/11 15:31] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): on
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): it's two-way
[2014/09/11 15:32] Margithe: now i don't hear it here
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): the restriction is bidirectional
[2014/09/11 15:32] Margithe: whirly
[2014/09/11 15:32] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): now we're unrestricted
[2014/09/11 15:32] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): i'll restrict the meeting parcel again..
[2014/09/11 15:32] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): done
[2014/09/11 15:32] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:33] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:33] Margithe: i dunno, the noise stopped when i went over the border back and forth, despite the cube being on
[2014/09/11 15:33] Duckie Dickins: well that's good to know
[2014/09/11 15:33] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:33] Margithe: crossed border, no sound.
[2014/09/11 15:33] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I don't know Margithe, maybe you can ban your neighbor from your parcel to prevent her from coming over near your buoys :)
[2014/09/11 15:33] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:33] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:34] Margithe: yes but no
[2014/09/11 15:34] Margithe: that means no visitors will hear any sounds either
[2014/09/11 15:34] Duckie Dickins: on
[2014/09/11 15:34] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): but wouldn't a visitor be in the same parcel as the buoy?
[2014/09/11 15:35] Margithe: if they sail through the neighbours parcel first, the neighbour has then effectively muted our objects for everyone, no?
[2014/09/11 15:35] Duckie Dickins: no..the buoy was on my parcel..
[2014/09/11 15:35] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:35] Margithe: like i said, the noise stopped entirely after one border crossing
[2014/09/11 15:35] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:35] Duckie Dickins: it was just on the edge of the parcel next to theirs
[2014/09/11 15:35] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:35] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:35] noiseboxy: Touched.
[2014/09/11 15:35] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): was it a looping sound?
[2014/09/11 15:36] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I wonder if that makes a difference
[2014/09/11 15:36] Duckie Dickins: yes it looped
[2014/09/11 15:36] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): perhaps the restriction applies as soon as you see the object (and would typically start hearing it), in that case
[2014/09/11 15:36] Margithe: is this expected behavior? that the sound gets muted entirely, if you cross a parcel that restricts sound?
[2014/09/11 15:36] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): and does not update as you cross the parcel border
[2014/09/11 15:36] Margithe: hmmm
[2014/09/11 15:37] Duckie Dickins: off
[2014/09/11 15:37] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I think it would update upon parcel crossing, ideally
[2014/09/11 15:37] Margithe: so this is a bug then?
[2014/09/11 15:37] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): starting or stopping the sounds depending on the permissions
[2014/09/11 15:37] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): er, parcel settings
[2014/09/11 15:37] Whirly Fizzle: If the sound emitter is out of cam view, it probably won't play because... interesting.....
[2014/09/11 15:37] Margithe: eww, whirly thats rather bad
[2014/09/11 15:37] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I think it would be reasonable to consider it a bug
[2014/09/11 15:37] Margithe: i mean, like terribly bad for ambient sounds.
[2014/09/11 15:37] Lucia Nightfire: I think thats also been filed too
[2014/09/11 15:38] Lucia Nightfire: doesn't affect looping sound afaik
[2014/09/11 15:38] Lucia Nightfire: only triggered
[2014/09/11 15:38] Whirly Fizzle: Same for ambient lights. They tuen off when you face away, even if you're just 1 m from the emitter
[2014/09/11 15:38] Duckie Dickins: aww it doesn't let me move it across the border because I'm not special
[2014/09/11 15:38] Margithe: oh... ouch
[2014/09/11 15:38] Margithe: Duckie, move it to the other parcel
[2014/09/11 15:38] Whirly Fizzle: New since interesting. Its kinda expected behaviour I guess, but its a bit annoying
[2014/09/11 15:38] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): okay i'll set the outside parcel to restrict sounds
[2014/09/11 15:39] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): done
[2014/09/11 15:39] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): um
[2014/09/11 15:39] Margithe: Actually that worked as intended
[2014/09/11 15:39] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): okay
[2014/09/11 15:39] Margithe: odd XD
[2014/09/11 15:40] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): yeah works fine for me
[2014/09/11 15:40] Duckie Dickins: yup
[2014/09/11 15:40] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): maybe it was a bug in the past, but the bug was fixed?
[2014/09/11 15:40] Margithe: aren't both parcels restricted?
[2014/09/11 15:41] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): right now yes
[2014/09/11 15:41] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): should I unrestrict the buoy's parcel?
[2014/09/11 15:41] Margithe: yes please
[2014/09/11 15:41] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): done
[2014/09/11 15:41] Margithe: i wonder what was different with your buzzer?
[2014/09/11 15:41] Margithe: since this works like it should
[2014/09/11 15:42] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): the buzzer showed two-way noise isolation
[2014/09/11 15:42] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): also it was playing a short sound
[2014/09/11 15:42] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): and i was fidding wiht the options back and forth too quickly, perhaps
[2014/09/11 15:42] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): (confusing things)
[2014/09/11 15:42] Margithe: Ah well, i'm happy to be able to tell the neighbour to stuff it and stop filing frivolous AR's
[2014/09/11 15:43] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I'm not sure if that setting is enforced viewer side or sim side
[2014/09/11 15:43] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): (I could see that going either way)
[2014/09/11 15:43] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): if it's viewer side, perhaps it's a bug in their viewer?
[2014/09/11 15:43] Margithe: nah. Whiny lot.
[2014/09/11 15:44] Margithe: Either way, i hope that Jira we looked at before gets worked on, it would be good news to many
[2014/09/11 15:44] Lucia Nightfire: it will in SL2
[2014/09/11 15:44] Margithe: The sort of shiny that rises land value.
[2014/09/11 15:44] Duckie Dickins: lol...I love your ankle monitor Baker
[2014/09/11 15:45] Chicken Tracker 3000XT: Get Back to your cage chicken!
[2014/09/11 15:45] Baker Linden: I love it too!
[2014/09/11 15:45] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): His boss keeps him on a tight leash :)
[2014/09/11 15:46] Rex Cronon: u can;t have range free chickens?
[2014/09/11 15:46] Rex Cronon: :)
[2014/09/11 15:46] Baker Linden: Free range chickens are too expensive to maintain
[2014/09/11 15:46] Lucia Nightfire: anyone looking at fixing SEC-1352 sorry for asking, heh
[2014/09/11 15:46] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): you can, but it'll be fried
[2014/09/11 15:46] Baker Linden: I am organic, though
[2014/09/11 15:47] Baker Linden: and you do NOT want to eat my eggs
[2014/09/11 15:47] Baker Linden: I promis
[2014/09/11 15:47] Baker Linden: e
[2014/09/11 15:47] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I don't have any updates on that, Lucia
[2014/09/11 15:47] Lucia Nightfire: heh
[2014/09/11 15:47] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): /me definitely wouldn't try that egg
[2014/09/11 15:48] Lucia Nightfire: I can't believe an exploit taht breaks sims has been allowed to persist for so long now, esp one that is used daily.
[2014/09/11 15:48] Rex Cronon: lol. i don't know who would want to eat your eggs:)
[2014/09/11 15:49] Baker Linden: thankfully no one
[2014/09/11 15:53] Margithe: Hmm, we have silence?
[2014/09/11 15:53] Margithe: what kind of improvements are there to group chat btw?
[2014/09/11 15:54] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Some tweaks which should make it fail less often
[2014/09/11 15:54] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): No new features or anything - just trying to improve the performance of it
[2014/09/11 15:54] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): to reduce the incidents of timeouts or all-out failures
[2014/09/11 15:55] Margithe: Ok. thats nice to hear. chatlag is actually not as bad as it used to be, but the timeouts are a pain.
[2014/09/11 15:56] Rex Cronon: what u mean by timeouts?
[2014/09/11 15:56] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): There have been quite a few complaints in Jiras recently
[2014/09/11 15:56] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): like BUG-345, Rex
[2014/09/11 15:56] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): [20:04] Second Life: The message sent to House of Erawan is still being processed.
If the message does not appear in the next few minutes, it may have been dropped by the server.
[2014/09/11 15:57] Rex Cronon: oh. that. thanks
[2014/09/11 15:57] Duckie Dickins: I haven't been able to open up scripters of secondlife group chat in ages...
[2014/09/11 15:57] Margithe: i don't really get why it happens with small groups?
[2014/09/11 15:58] Margithe: large groups is a given, but small, all in the same sim?
[2014/09/11 15:58] Margithe: or spread on two sims max..
[2014/09/11 15:58] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): I think that would be caused by overall high load on the group chat server
[2014/09/11 15:58] Baker Linden: yeah
[2014/09/11 15:58] Baker Linden: not all groups get their own server
[2014/09/11 15:59] Whirly Fizzle: Would increasing the number of group chat servers help?
[2014/09/11 15:59] Whirly Fizzle: Theres only 16 in total isn't there?
[2014/09/11 15:59] Margithe: hmmm... or statistically spreading the groups based on activity?
[2014/09/11 15:59] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Hm, this is a good question for Simon, Whirly
[2014/09/11 16:00] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): it might be bad enough when it gets bad that the number of servers would have to increase by a few orders of magnitude
[2014/09/11 16:00] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): but I'm speculating - let's ask him next time
[2014/09/11 16:00] Rex Cronon: is it possible for a group of like 10k users to have all the users on at the same time?
[2014/09/11 16:01] Baker Linden: there's almost 2 million groups (in existence). While not all of them are active, it'd certainly be hard to shard certain groups into certain servers (I imagine - I never looked at the code)
[2014/09/11 16:01] Baker Linden: rex, certainly is
[2014/09/11 16:01] Baker Linden: it's possible for groups with 100k people to all be on at once
[2014/09/11 16:01] Rex Cronon: does the group chat still function?
[2014/09/11 16:01] Baker Linden: I highly doubt it
[2014/09/11 16:01] Margithe: it seemed to me, that every group made, gets assigned to a server and then stays there until disbanded... is that correct?
[2014/09/11 16:01] Baker Linden: I don't know that much detail, Margithe
[2014/09/11 16:02] Duckie Dickins: FM theory....
[2014/09/11 16:02] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Yeah, group chat is sharded by group_id
[2014/09/11 16:02] Rex Cronon: 100k? no way. there were never 100k usrs logged in sl at one time
[2014/09/11 16:02] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): which stays constant for the lifetime of the group
[2014/09/11 16:02] Whirly Fizzle: I thought the first letter/number in the groups key denoted which server it used for chat.
[2014/09/11 16:02] Margithe: spreading the load would make sense, instead of spreading groups newly made.
[2014/09/11 16:02] Whirly Fizzle: So all groups starting with b in they key use the same server etc
[2014/09/11 16:02] Baker Linden: ahh ok, so maybe we're unlucky with the group ids lol
[2014/09/11 16:03] Whirly Fizzle: Hence... 16 servers. Not 100% sure thats correct though.
[2014/09/11 16:03] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Whirly knows this because when there's an outage of a certain group server, all groups with id's starting with 'b' will have chat issues, for example
[2014/09/11 16:03] Baker Linden: Rex, I'm just saying the largest groups are over 100k people
[2014/09/11 16:03] Whirly Fizzle: Haha yeah. The screams start lol
[2014/09/11 16:04] Margithe: Some groups have definitely been unlucky, there are groups that almost never manage to start chat, even if they are few members. Statistically it would seem that spreading groups on creation between the servers would be enough, but then we have the unlikely chance of a pileup
[2014/09/11 16:04] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Oops, we're out of time
[2014/09/11 16:04] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Thanks for coming, everybody!
[2014/09/11 16:05] Duckie Dickins: Thanks for having us.
[2014/09/11 16:05] Margithe: Thanks for listening to mah whinery...
[2014/09/11 16:05] Whirly Fizzle: Whats funny is when a group chat server is totally down, once it comes back up, which can be hours later, all the group chat posts that never went throu8gh, which can be hundreds, all get spat into chat.
[2014/09/11 16:05] SnipiTestFS: ty
[2014/09/11 16:05] Baker Linden: Thanks for coming everyone! Have a great weekend!
[2014/09/11 16:05] Yuzuru (yuzuru.jewell): Thank you, Maestro, Baker and Caleb.
[2014/09/11 16:05] Rex Cronon: tc mestro
[2014/09/11 16:05] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Yeah, i could see that causing confusion..
[2014/09/11 16:05] Rex Cronon: tc baker
[2014/09/11 16:06] Rex Cronon: tc everybody leaving
[2014/09/11 16:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): "the race starts in 1 minute!" (30min after it started..)
[2014/09/11 16:06] Rex Cronon: tc caleb
[2014/09/11 16:06] Mæstro Linden (maestro.linden): Have a nice weekend!
[2014/09/11 16:06] Rex Cronon: u 2
[2014/09/11 16:06] Whirly Fizzle: Ty Lindens
