Overview

Linden Lab offers discounted region pricing to qualifying accredited educational institutions and nonprofit organizations using Second Life in support of their institutional or organizational mission. Discounted pricing is granted to the qualifying institution or organization rather than to an individual. Each request must be reviewed and supported by documentation confirming eligibility, the applicant's authority to act on behalf of the institution or organization, and the intended use of the region. Approval is determined by Linden Lab and is not automatic.

Eligibility

Organization Type Basic Qualification
Educational institution An accredited school, college, university, training institution, or other accredited educational entity
Nonprofit Organization An organization with formal nonprofit or charitable status issued by the appropriate government authority

For nonprofit organizations based outside the United States, the organization must provide documentation showing formal nonprofit or charitable status in its country that is comparable to recognition under Section 501(c)(3) in the United States.

Linden Lab determines whether the documentation provided is sufficient for approval. Providing nonprofit or charitable registration documentation does not automatically guarantee eligibility.

Individual instructors, informal groups, student organizations, and personal projects do not independently qualify unless the region is owned and supported by an eligible accredited institution.

Required Documentation

Applicants should provide:

  • The institution's or organization's legal name
  • Proof of current educational accreditation, nonprofit registration, or charitable status
  • An official website or other verifiable organizational information
  • The applicant's name, position, and authority to act on behalf of the institution or organization
  • An organizational email address when available
  • A description of the intended region use and how it relates to the mission of the institution or organization

Documentation must be current, readable, and consistent with the institution or organization and the account requesting discounted pricing.

Additional documentation may be requested when eligibility, applicant authority, account ownership, or the proposed use is unclear.

Region Use Requirement

The region must primarily support the approved institution's or organization's mission.

The approved institution or organization must retain control of the region and remain responsible for its operation.

Uses That Do Not Qualify

Discounted regions may not be used primarily for:

  • Personal residences or private estates
  • Commercial land or rental businesses
  • Renting or subleasing parcels to unrelated residents or organizations
  • Reselling land, region access, or the benefit of discounted pricing
  • Holding or operating a region on behalf of an entity that would not independently qualify

Educator and nonprofit regions may not be transferred outside the approved organization while retaining discounted pricing. A region may be transferred to another authorized account representing the same organization, subject to Linden Lab review and approval. A transfer to an account outside the approved organization may be permitted, but the region will be converted to the applicable standard pricing.
