Private IMs are protected from being copied and pasted to others without permission.
It was my understanding that local chat convos are protected as well. Is this true?

- This is correct. You can find the part in the Community Standards: "Remotely monitoring conversations in Second Life, posting conversation logs, or sharing conversation logs without the participants' consent are all prohibited."
