Nice write up (^_^) However, like Prim and Prims, I think that God Mode and Godmode should be merged. Zai signature.png Lynch (talk|contribs) 02:39, 5 September 2008 (PDT)

Wow, THX!
One paragraph states "Linden Lab employees may use "God Mode" for many reasons, including the privacy granted from being hidden from maps invisible to sensors etc.,". I doubt the "hidden from map" part since I would have never noticed it. The "sensor" part has a nice caveat. See User talk:Soft Linden#sensor caveat. Should that be added?

It depends on how detailed the God Mode article should be- should it also include information on the "God Mode" bug that was plugged ages ago ?

Hm, not sure which one you mean. It's not "allow fly" with admin options activated, or is it? Anyway, I tend to add all info in case it's related and sorted.

Why is this documented at all?

For those wondering why something so powerful as this, which only Lindens can use, is documented here, the answer is simple: as of 2024, most third-party viewers based on the open-sourced code of the Second Life Viewer can be used to connect to grids using the free and open source OpenSimulator platform (a project which doesn't have its own "official" viewer).

In those grids — mind you, not run by Linden Lab! — it is certainly possible for admin users (the maintainers of that particular grid) to enter "God Mode" to perform exactly the same kind of things that the Lindens do on Linden Lab's own Second Life Grid®. Therefore, if you ever wished to see all these extra goodies getting activated, download OpenSimulator, install it on your local computer, and point a viewer to it — and you'll be able to see what's all the fuss about!

Also note that for over a decade (at the time of writing), the official Second Life Viewer(s) do not allow users to connect to anything which is not being run by Linden Lab — currently, only the so-called "Main Grid" (Agni) and the "Preview Grid" (Aditi). Any other grid has been blocked by LL in their own viewer, but third-party viewers continue to support the ability to log in and connect to a third-party OpenSimulator grid.

Thus, while this page is highly likely not very useful for the Lindens themselves (they might benefit more from whatever on-site training they get), it is useful for those tinkering around with their own grid and wondering how "God Mode" works.
