Considering using this for the Knowledge Base

Now that the KB is on this Wiki, I think this template may be useful for making KB articles look prettier. It hasn't been formally included in the Style Guide yet but it's under consideration.

I changed the "+" to "-", and also changed the font size — if that strikes you as appalling, we can always change it back, but I found some of the glyphs like "⌘" to look too small at the 0.8 em size. Let me know what your feelings are. - Torley-favicon.png Torley on 2009-11-02 @ 8:56 AM PST

I prefer the template over the text version, but still think that plus is better than minus.
Anyway, it's an improvement. --Zai signature.png (talk|contribs) 20:59, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Rework?

This template needs to be reworked so that it doesn't invoke ifexist or Keypress when it is not needed to do so. It's an involved change for which I do not have time to do now (I'm making this comment so I remember to come back and fix it later.) -- Strife (talk|contribs) 18:42, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Yuss, the ifexist causes the trouble... Had the same problem earlier with the Office Hour template. Only 100 calls of ifexist are currently allowed per page. But I guess that this one here could have a switch statement as a work around and new languages can be added to the switch when deployed.

I'll get on it in a couple days :-/ -- Strife (talk|contribs) 04:19, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for early intertervention. I didn't expect that there would be a need for that fix for quite some time, since no one payed attention to Shortcuts SL-UX anyway. But then came a mail about VWR-9287 and VWR-12385 on the SL-UX mailing list today, with the question how to choose better shortcuts for them. So took that as a hint to poke people on the list again and that's the reason why I made that change. Didn't meant to interfer. Also dunno why it took me so many edits and why some didn't work out the way they should... I'll ponder about it later ^_^

It's ok, I'm kinda busy resurrecting my computer in fits and starts (the new screen just arrived but I don't have a wireless adapter (that isn't shit)), my better mouse is somewhere in the storage locker, all I could find was the one with the mostly broken left button. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 18:30, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion to remove "+"

Some of Doc Team has admired how these make shortcuts "come alive" and more clearly show "THESE ARE KEYS!" Obvious but true.

I'd say in almost all instances, however, the "+" are superfluous and aren't needed. Placing the keys close to each other indicates clearly that they're "grouped". While this needs to undergo a broader style discussion, have a look at the Ableton Live manuals, like the Live 8 English one on page 509. Ableton are masters of elegance. - Torley-favicon.png Torley on 2009-04-27 @ 12:05 PM PST

So it would be Ctrl-Alt-Del vs. CtrlAltDel vs. Ctrl Alt Del hmm... I think I'd go either with the current version or with the third. No preference between them to from my side. However, the one in the middle doesn't look that good. Like the roundish look at the Ableton Live manual. Zai signature.png Lynch (talk|contribs) 20:37, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I've looked at the cited documentation and it doesn't feel quite right to me (the extra heavy lines above and below look weird as do the the rounded edges). Not to dismiss the idea because of a bad implementation, I went looking for other wikis that use the Keypress template, all use a "+" between the keys. If we do strip the "+" we are going to be the only ones doing so. If we are seriously going to consider this, we should take up the discussion on wikipedia and see what they think. I imagine that someone will put forth "While yes, the '+' is superfluous with the box styling, it is also hearkens back to the de facto standard for the writing of keyboard shortcut." The versions with spaces or pluses are both good looking solutions but really I don't care. On a side note, we should also be considering Ctrl-Alt-Del, this format is also common in documentation. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 00:40, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
I'd prefer to keep the "+", since it gives the subtle indication of a key combo instead of a key sequence.

GREAT POINTS, I was ignorant that Wikipedia themselves used "+". I don't think there's a single right answer and you've convinced me of things I was missing earlier — Strife, "-" instead of "+" is what LL official documentation has used, since that's literally how shortcuts are shown in the menus (like "Ctrl-Alt-D"). But if we have a more graphical format, the "+" (since it is additive) makes more sense to me. (And since foolish consistency is a hobgoblin or something, I'm happy to be flexible.) - Torley-favicon.png Torley on 2009-04-28 @ 9:23 AM PST

Mouse Click

The manual linked above contains some nice icon for a clicked mouse button (e.g. in 32.20 at page 519). I searched for an icon to use in this wiki but only found this one (and it's partner) but they don't look good when shrinked down to fit the regular text height. Is there a unicode character we could use? Or some other free image? For stuff like Ctrl+Right Click.
Zai signature.png Lynch (talk|contribs) 19:10, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikimedia commons doesn't even use those icons. You know what, I can't find any font with the glyphs used in that manual, this is really odd. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 20:15, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, really odd, considering how many strange dingbats are part of the unicode. The chars I'm missing in there are the heart-dotted i as well as left/right mouseclick. They'd be really useful. Zai signature.png Lynch (talk|contribs) 20:42, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
We could make our own... -- Strife (talk|contribs) 06:31, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
I tried to, yesterday, though it made me blush and I deleted it in shame... *not an artist* --Zai signature.png Lynch (talk|contribs) 13:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Why not LMB & RMB ?

Ewww. I don't think people would understand. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 17:13, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Dev/null

Need to rewrite this not to use the dev/null template. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 10:54, 4 May 2012 (PDT)

It is done, Template:dev/null is no longer used. -- Strife (talk|contribs) 14:03, 1 June 2012 (PDT)
