Transcript of Benjamin Linden's office hours:

Wyn Galbraith: Hey Jurin
Jurin Juran: hi
Squirrel Wood: So what's hot today?
Benja Kepler: any more on the OpenID?
Wyn Galbraith: Squirrel is all about hot today.
Benjamin Linden: I'm not in the loop on openID stuff Benja
Benjamin Linden: what specifically were you wondering?
Benja Kepler: oh, ok, someone on a forum said you were
Wyn Galbraith: Zero talked about it today.
Saijanai Kuhn: Some of the people from the Croquet progject were up on OpenID too as a way of maintaining identifiy across the multiverse
Benja Kepler: no, Zero talked about OpenID on the wiki/pjira today
Ciaran Laval: Benjamin got a mention on the forums for some reason
Wyn Galbraith: And SL
Wyn Galbraith likes the idea.
Benjamin Linden: which forum? sldev or the web forums?
Saijanai Kuhn: Second LIfe, Croquet, Home, Multiverse, etc... All with a single OpenID
Benjamin Linden: I'm a big fan of openID but I don't really know what our plans around it are
Ciaran Laval: The web forums, someone said you'd been discussing it quite a while back
Wyn Galbraith: Maybe involving the UI?
Benjamin Linden: hmm I don't remember that, but it's possible
Wyn Galbraith: Check Zero's log when he puts it up.
Benja Kepler: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=206142
Benjamin Linden: I went to an openID talk at LinuxFest northwest a few months ago
Benja Kepler: i started some threads today ...
Benja Kepler: (haven't used the forums in ages)
Ciaran Laval: Rough crowd in the forums
Benjamin Linden: rough crowd in general :-)
Benja Kepler: yeah - I got a 'haven't read the sodding....' response
Benja Kepler: lol
Benja Kepler: egg on face on my part - my Paranoia Chip overheated today
Saijanai Kuhn: Wyn and I volunteerede to herd the cats in teh sldev forum
Benjamin Linden: what do you mean by that Saijanai?
Wyn Galbraith: Yeah and I just got a call for a job interview next week.
Jurin Juran: yay wyn!
Saijanai Kuhn: trying to keep threads on tpic and such. Wyn probalby can tell you more
Benjamin Linden: wow, that's great news, Wyn!
Wyn Galbraith: Just a dataentry job.
Benja Kepler: cool, Wyn - I had an interview last week...
Benjamin Linden: oh yeah, Rob was just talking to me about that, Saijanai
Wyn Galbraith: Did you get the job?
Benja Kepler: yes
Jurin Juran: congrats benja
Benja Kepler: thx!
Benjamin Linden: oh that's fantastic, Benja!
Benjamin Linden: are you moving to SF?
Saijanai Kuhn: grats
Benja Kepler: haha
Benja Kepler: South London
Benjamin Linden: oh sweet
Jurin Juran: awesome
Wyn Galbraith: Cool, well I need to get working. Congrats, of course you volunteer for something...
Saijanai Kuhn: Doing what?
Ciaran Laval: I thought they were in Brighton?
Benjamin Linden: are you a dev, Benja?
Benja Kepler: yes, but in DEC
Wyn Galbraith: A LL job?
Benja Kepler: (no, not LL)
Ciaran Laval: Ohhhh!
Wyn Galbraith: Ah...
Benja Kepler: ahhh
Wyn Galbraith can wish ;D
Benja Kepler: back to RL for me
Saijanai Kuhn: oooh...
Benjamin Linden: oh lol
Benja Kepler: or whatever it's called now
Wyn Galbraith: Me too. But data entry isn't hard work. Got to do something.
Benjamin Linden: I thought you were talking about LL Benja
Saijanai Kuhn: (reference to Castle Aaarrrggghhh goes here)
Benjamin Linden: but still, congrats!
Benja Kepler: no, RL work
Benja Kepler: :(
Squirrel Wood: rl job good! pays them nasty bills!
Benja Kepler: aye
Wyn Galbraith: Got to pay my tier.
Squirrel Wood: On the topic of user interfaces... http://www.tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/ <= that "game" has a quite interesting one. Also the Abiogenesis part (which only the creators can use) may provide some nice new ideas for the UI :)
Benjamin Linden: so, I think on Tuesday someone wanted to discuss accessibility
Benjamin Linden: unless my mind is failing me
Saijanai Kuhn: spore has some intereseting ideas too. The easiest one is the 3D editor that looks like part of the world
Benjamin Linden: I'm looking forward to spore
Benjamin Linden: if it ever ships
Squirrel Wood: Spork!
Saijanai Kuhn: march 2008 according to the latest word (this month)
Benjamin Linden: wow, it keeps slipping further and further
Saijanai Kuhn: huge project
Saijanai Kuhn: MMORPG world meets ImLife
Saijanai Kuhn: SimLife
Benjamin Linden: right
Benjamin Linden: Squirrel, what is it about this other game that you like?
Benjamin Linden: hey Scope!
Scope Cleaver: Hi!
Scope Cleaver: Thanks Jurin
Squirrel Wood: Its a user interface that works completely without words.
Jurin Juran: yw scope
Benjamin Linden: interesting
Benjamin Linden: are IMs lagging for other folks too?
Ciaran Laval: Some of my chat is
Squirrel Wood: IMs have been lagging badly for me all day
Benjamin Linden: hmm, probably not a good sign
Squirrel Wood: Mostly longer messages though
Ciaran Laval: My IM's have been ok though
Benjamin Linden: I'll check out this game, Squirrel
Benjamin Linden: there's a "new" online world call vside that also has an interesting interface
Benjamin Linden: very clean
Saijanai Kuhn: mac client availabel?
Saijanai Kuhn: available?
Saijanai Kuhn: yes it is.. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/role_strategy/vside.html
Saijanai Kuhn: Is Second LIfe listed on the Apple site?
Benjamin Linden: not sure
Saijanai Kuhn: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/role_strategy/secondlife.html
Saijanai Kuhn: yep
Squirrel Wood: I hear voice?
Saijanai Kuhn: loveless
Ciaran Laval: Subliminal messages
Benjamin Linden: oh I think it was JayR wanted to talk more about the communicate window
Dale Glass: "RPG & Strategy"? Weird.
Benjamin Linden: but I don't see her here
Ciaran Laval: It's not as bad as I first thought
Dale Glass: oh, I wanted to ask about designing something
Saijanai Kuhn: text sizes still ned activation, at least on the Mac
Flight Band: All Go
Benjamin Linden: what's up Dale?
Dale Glass: ok, I'm trying to add some extra info to the chat log
Dale Glass: I wanted to make it for example log the owner of the object that's speaking
Dale Glass: now my problem is how
Dale Glass: First approach was adding text fields with the info. But that's ugly, and has only room for one element, so gets lost quickly
Dale Glass: so my current attempt is writing it to the log
Dale Glass: now the problem there is: If a lookup is needed, it's not possible to add the info immediately
Benja Kepler: hi Latizia
Dale Glass: eg, may need a key lookup
Laetizia Coronet: hiya folks
Dale Glass: skipping it while the info is missing isn't good, as maybe you'll only get one message
Dale Glass: so here's what I came up with:
Dale Glass: [12:00] Thingy [#1]: Hi!
Dale Glass: [12:01] #1: Dale Glass
Dale Glass: that is, if it doesn't know who, it queues it up and assigns it a number
Dale Glass: and then when it's done says what name it got
Dale Glass: any better ideas?
Squirrel Wood: How about making it Thingy (Dale Glass): Hi! ?
Dale Glass: but the problem is that on the first message my key may not be known
Benjamin Linden: that's an interesting problem Dale
Dale Glass: getting it requires asking the server
Squirrel Wood: then display (unknown) ?
Dale Glass: but if there's only 1 message from that object that's all you'll get
Dale Glass: not very useful
Benjamin Linden: Could you just have a follow-on message that says "Thingy is owned by Dale Glass"?
Benjamin Linden: and before the lookup it would say "Thingy [looking up owner]: blah blah"
Laetizia Coronet: or Dale Glass' Thingy... hn no that sounds wrong lol
Ciaran Laval: There's always one :P
Wyn Galbraith: LOL Laetizia
Benjamin Linden: or message could just not include the owner until the lookup is done
Benjamin Linden: *messages rather
Laetizia Coronet: sometimes those servers are down altogether anyway
Dale Glass: well, the problem is that there are two options: Skipping it completely, which loses valuable data
Dale Glass: or somehow queueing up the chat log and delaying it until the data arrives
Dale Glass: but that last way isn't very nice
Benjamin Linden: my suggestion is to not queue the messages and just show them without the owner info
Benjamin Linden: but then when you get the owner info display that in a message (as above)
Benjamin Linden: and then include owner with all future messages
Benjamin Linden: does that make sense?
Dale Glass: makes sense, pretty much what I have already
Dale Glass: just slightly different info, but same implementation really
Benjamin Linden: yeah, I think making the user remember a number and then correlating that number to a follow-up message would be tough for some
Squirrel Wood: keep it as simple as possible. yep.
Benjamin Linden: sounds like it will be helpful once it's done, though. I'm looking forward to checking it out
Laetizia Coronet: not sure what we're talking about but there are owner online scripts that show the owner of an object
Dale Glass: I also now display position info from IMs
Dale Glass: Turns out IM messages contain the sim and coordinates
Benjamin Linden: oh wow, cool
Benjamin Linden: the coordinates from where it originates?
Dale Glass: that took me some work to do though
Dale Glass: yep, it includes the sim key
Benjamin Linden: so you could just tp right to the source
Wyn Galbraith: Interesting.
Dale Glass: but since there's no key -> sim name lookup function, I had to make a bot and make it hop through the whole grid to build a DB :-D
Jansen Miles: Erg. Privacy issues...
Benja Kepler: you get a slurl now when something gives you a notecard, like your office notecard giver, Benjamin....
Dale Glass: so far 9000 sims explored, 3000 left
Laetizia Coronet: wow so many!
Squirrel Wood: some sim names change frequently though
Laetizia Coronet: but their keys don't, do they?
Benja Kepler: do they? I saw that Rosedale is nect to Kapor
Dale Glass: well, LL includes the data, I just show it. If there are privacy issues the thing would be not to give the viewer that data in the first place
Wyn Galbraith: Sims can change their name?
Benja Kepler: *next
Dale Glass: as anybody with coding knowledge can get that info easily right now
Laetizia Coronet: yeah Wyn, if you sell Sexyland to the methodist church they may want to change the name ;)
Wyn Galbraith: Wow, didn't know that. Thanks, another new thing learned today.
Benjamin Linden: I agree with Dale
Dale Glass: generally not a problem, I could run the bot weekly or such
Benjamin Linden: but it does seem like there are potential privacy issues
Dale Glass: also it's possible to teleport to a sim by key
Wyn Galbraith wants to ride the bot.
Benjamin Linden: Dale, what does the bot do, can you clarify?
Dale Glass: so it's funny, you can't know what's it called, but you can teleport to it
Dale Glass: ok, sims like assets have a key
Dale Glass: only there's no llKey2Name for sims, not even as a message the viewer can send
Squirrel Wood: I assume it TPs to the key and queries the sims name
Dale Glass: however, when you connect to a sim you get both the key and sim name
Laetizia Coronet: what if these are closed off sims?
Dale Glass: so the bot just teleports from one sim to another gathering data
Dale Glass: it doesn't need to teleport to each, keys of neighbouring sims are available
Wyn Galbraith: Should get an error messagae and pass on to the next sim.
Wyn Galbraith: *message
Dale Glass: og, my viewer probably has the key for Campus, no need to TP there
Benjamin Linden: interesting
Benjamin Linden: does the bot store the data somewhere?
Wyn Galbraith still wants to ride the bot, Dale. :D
JayR Cela: Dale does the bot loose her hair and shoes when she teleports from one simm to another / LOL :_)
Dale Glass: yeah, it generates a .xml file I'll include with my next viewer
Laetizia Coronet: lmao
Wyn Galbraith: Yeah it gets stuck to her bottom.
Laetizia Coronet: I hear frequent heavy TPing will kill your inventory
JayR Cela: haaaaa I knew it !!!! she has the same problem we all have too
Wyn Galbraith: I think it would be a rush to travel from sim to sim quickly.
Wyn Galbraith will use an alt that has no important inventory.
Laetizia Coronet: lol
Dale Glass: lots of lines like this in that file:
Dale Glass: <entry id="b5d5d8ea-748e-41d1-afea-41467de27f6d" handle="1125899907100672">Beaumont</entry>
Dale Glass: my bot teleports every 5 seconds on average
Wyn Galbraith: Ruth Littlething, she's got nothing.
Laetizia Coronet: please make me lose all the default crap I no longer need like Hakajuru Male skin
Squirrel Wood: 720 sims per hour...
Wyn Galbraith: Wow.
JayR Cela: Dale can you program you bot to hunt down and destroy griefers as well ??
Squirrel Wood: so it takes about 17 hours to complete the mapping
Laetizia Coronet: wow that's so fast Wyn wouldn't even know what was happening
Benja Kepler: so does it have a name? like Grid Shepherd?
Wyn Galbraith: That would be an interesting ride. I've been given rides through every room in a MU* before.
Dale Glass: it's a libsecondlife bot, it doesn't load textures or anything
Dale Glass: so it's quite light
Dale Glass: it's called Gatherer Infinity
Dale Glass: offline right now
Benja Kepler: ok, so I can ban it....
Benja Kepler giggles
Jurin Juran: LOL benja
Dale Glass: probably too late :-P
Laetizia Coronet: wow tat even sounds like a NASA project
Dale Glass: and I can always make a second one
Benjamin Linden: lol @ laetizia
Benjamin Linden: Dale, are you worried about the size of that xml file?
Benjamin Linden: seems like it might get quite large
Wyn Galbraith: It was for punishment, but it turned out to be so much fun. Took about 10 minutes to hit every room.
Dale Glass: it's about 1MB
Laetizia Coronet: "And liftoff for Space Shuttle Glass with Gatherer Infinitry on board"
Wyn Galbraith claims shotgun!
Benjamin Linden: oh that's not too bad
Dale Glass: probably should compress quite well too
Wyn Galbraith: Sim astronut.
Benja Kepler: yes, and a Klingon ship will encounter it in the future and zap it
Laetizia Coronet: mind the heat resistant tiles though
Wyn Galbraith is an avatar of high quality and can take it.
Squirrel Wood: them shields compensate for defective tiles :p
Laetizia Coronet: Benjamin can I raise an UI point?
Dale Glass: ok, in case anybody is wondering why
Saijanai Kuhn: Benjamin, it seems to me that scriptable bots should be pretty high on the list for LL's internal testing use
Wyn Galbraith: Might be an idea for a new SL ride Dale.
Dale Glass: I made this thing while tracking an IM spamming object
Wyn Galbraith: Don't have time to explore? hit every sim anyway ;)
Benjamin Linden: yes, go ahead Laetizia
Benja Kepler: oh, yes, Dale, I read your blog
Dale Glass: problem is that IM spam can come from anywhere at all, so it's nastier than normal chat
Laetizia Coronet: it is very very hard in busy places to select a speaker to turn his volume up or down, the names jump about all the time.
Squirrel Wood: the worst thing are name changing IM spammer objects
Dale Glass: well, my next viewer will tell yo where they are and who owns them :-)
Jurin Juran: if you click on name laetizia it holds them
Benjamin Linden: Dale, can you send mea link to your blog
Dale Glass: sec...
Wyn Galbraith: Just put it here Dale, I think I have it but am not sure.
Laetizia Coronet would love a Random Landmark machine, you might be able to make one Dale
Benjamin Linden: Laetizia, if you click on the column header for people's names, it will sort by name
Dale Glass: http://daleglass.wordpress.com/2007/08/09/silencing-the-voice-of-god/
Benjamin Linden: and stop sorting by last speaker
Benjamin Linden: hey JayR I didn't even see you sneak in
Laetizia Coronet: oh! good ty
Benjamin Linden: thanks Dale
Laetizia Coronet had no idea, and I am supposed to help people
Wyn Galbraith is going to have to run off to fix a computer soon, part just arrived.
Ciaran Laval: I'd love a bookmark ability
Benjamin Linden: I have a question for you guys
Benjamin Linden: which sites, blogs, forums, etc do you use to find out about cool new builds, or classic old ones?
JayR Cela: Ben hi there I came to speak with you about my opinions on the SL voice client
Wyn Galbraith: Lindens are full of questions today.
Benjamin Linden: lol
Wyn Galbraith is already herding cats ;)
Benjamin Linden: we want to *listen* more
Laetizia Coronet: builds... NWN usually
Wyn Galbraith: Shoot.
Squirrel Wood: word of mouth seems to be a good source for me ^^
Jansen Miles: Finally we can get torches and pitchforks and go after spammers as a mob!
Laetizia Coronet: my own blog is more issue and person oriented
Wyn Galbraith: Picks.
Grey Kurka: I like Torleys pics for new builds
Saijanai Kuhn: would require a weeb data base for 12000 sims but would be worth it to a lot of people...
Laetizia Coronet: yes Torley is a rich source of a wide variety of new stuff
Wyn Galbraith: I've started writing about places, my blog is new and I'm new to doing them.
Wyn Galbraith: Found great piano maker.
Ciaran Laval: You want to listen more Benjamin?
Jurin Juran: sue is good wyn
Benjamin Linden: what about sites like second life insider
Laetizia Coronet: neve seen it actually
Benjamin Linden: do you think it would be a good idea to have a page on the wiki, like an SL Tourists Guide or something
Wyn Galbraith: Don't read a lot of blogs, or haven't in the past.
Jurin Juran: i run them all in feeds
Jurin Juran: yes it would be a good idean
Wyn Galbraith: That's a good idea.
Benjamin Linden: that people can go and add links to sites that have good tips on where to go in-world
Ciaran Laval: Yes a tourist guide is a great idea
Jurin Juran: the newbies love "things to do" group
Ciaran Laval: There's an unofficial book isn't there
Grey Kurka: When you look at pics it gives you an imediate sense of the place
Wyn Galbraith: Be nice to have it all in one place.
Laetizia Coronet: Benjamin it would be good to present newbies with some package or page yes
Benjamin Linden: yes, there's a book
Jurin Juran: there is a landmark hud thats popular
Ciaran Laval: Books are too static though, web based would be better#
Roman Legius HUD: Roman HUD Ready and Operational. For help, Click the HUD.
Laetizia Coronet: but I can already hear people griping about not being on the page
Wyn Galbraith: Webbased is a better idea.
Wyn Galbraith: With SLurls
Benjamin Linden: I like the wiki because people can add their own things
Benjamin Linden: and LL doesn't get blamed for favoritism
Laetizia Coronet: Prok: "The Lindens are just putting their frends on this list"
Wyn Galbraith: So is this like the SL Tourist office on wiki?
Ciaran Laval: Some people will never find their way to the wiki though
Laetizia Coronet: exactly, good thinking
Benjamin Linden: that's the beauty of the wiki
Wyn Galbraith facepalms.
Grey Kurka: But it needs to be more visual, sl is all about the visual, the Wiki is too dry
Benjamin Linden: true Ciaran, but we can do a better job of pointing people to the wiki
Gatherer Infinity: I'm in ur grid, collecting sum data. Ph33r.
Wyn Galbraith: Lots of snapshots.
Laetizia Coronet: the Wiki can contain photos
Wyn Galbraith: Uhoh here comes the Gatherer.
Benjamin Linden: and there are ways to make the wiki more visual
Laetizia Coronet: wheres mah gun
Ciaran Laval: Torley made a great blog about the wiki the other day but alas it's way down the blog listing now
Benjamin Linden: is that your bot dale?
Squirrel Wood: Add a "Popular Places" button to the UI `which loads up the wiki page ?
Saijanai Kuhn: A thing that Silicon Plunkett created a while back is a Sim terrain sculpty generator. Dale and Silicon should get together and create a visual 3D databsae of popular sims
Benja Kepler: I just muted the Gatherer
Jurin Juran: make it more like bloghud, with snapshots
Laetizia Coronet: I saw that, quite impressive
Benjamin Linden: what is bloghud Jurin?
Benjamin Linden: is it like sloog?
Wyn Galbraith: LOL
Wyn Galbraith: A SLOOG
Laetizia Coronet wants a part of the action and considers writing more explorer blogs ;)
Benjamin Linden: have any of you used sloog? it's great
Jurin Juran: yes it is
Laetizia Coronet: no idea what it is
Wyn Galbraith: That's a good idea, I did 'Postcards from the Sledge' on my blog.
Jansen Miles: UI idea. In the Communicate dialog, clicking on a name in the right panel highlights all of their chat text in the left.
Jurin Juran: bloghud is easier for me to use tho
Chaise lounge (black leather): llStopAnimation: Script trying to stop animations but agent not found
Wyn Galbraith: Only didn't keep track of where the snapshots were taken.
Saijanai Kuhn: associated idea: colored text for people, or groups of people in chat

Laetizia Coronet: I did a chopper trip across 40 sims in one go
Jansen Miles: Highlighted in a non-intrusive way that doesn't impede readability.
Laetizia Coronet: and I am planning a water tour
Benjamin Linden: hmm that's an interesting idea Jansen
Wyn Galbraith just wants to be put in a sphere and tour that way. "Hey that's an idea for a water tour.
Saijanai Kuhn: Gatherer INfinity needs a group tag.
Benjamin Linden: JayR, did you want to make some comments ont he communicate window?
Laetizia Coronet: no... I'll use a freebie boat because my fancy yacht freezes uop on sim crossings
Jansen Miles: I was looking for some text just now in a long history. It's a pain. Also, the whole Ctrl-F find thing should work in the context of the Communicate dialog as well. I know it's been discussed for the scripting window.
JayR Cela: Ben would be better perhaps in private , since I really have nothing positive to say :(
Dale Glass: ack, hit an evil viewer bug
Dale Glass: yep, that's my bot
Ciaran Laval: These meetings are awfully polite, it's not like going to one of Robin's!
Benjamin Linden: that's fine, JayR, there's been plenty of negative feedback
Laetizia Coronet: Dale is there a way to recognize a bot? There is someone on Hep Island just saying hi to everyone for hours on end
Benjamin Linden: does polite = boring? :-)
Grey Kurka: I have a quick question about the building window
Ciaran Laval: Ok who TP'd Benjamin out of here?
Gatherer Infinity: I can speak through it too
Connecting to in-world Voice Chat...
Squirrel Wood: WB

??? Connected

Benjamin Linden: sorry guys, my viewer crashed
Wyn Galbraith: I've got to go too, got to fix a system.
Wyn Galbraith: LOL Benjamin
JayR Cela: byee Wyn
Laetizia Coronet: ha!
Benjamin Linden: I was trying to get fancy with the camera
Dale Glass: hehe, mine too
Dale Glass: same bug!
Saijanai Kuhn: someone wanted a 1-axis scaling option for link sets. Shouldn't be too hard to add, but again, not sure where the code lives
Dale Glass: darn thing locks up
Laetizia Coronet: get rid of that Win95 already Benjamin
Wyn Galbraith: Hahah... happens to me all the time.
Grey Kurka: You have to keep draw distance real low when using Camera
Benjamin Linden: haha I might be better off with win95
Benjamin Linden: Jurin is it my imagination or did your avatar just smile?
Jurin Juran: i smile alot
Jurin Juran: :)
Benjamin Linden: nurgle has a very cool av
Grey Kurka: Comment on the Edit window
Grey Kurka: It would greatly enhance the flow of buildin if there was a keyboard shortcut for Position, and if you could move a selected object incrimentaly with the arrow keys
Wyn Galbraith: Nurgle is.
Laetizia Coronet: uh oh he has Linden's Disease ... seeing things on the grid which are not there due to overexposure
Gatherer Infinity: Bye!
Jurin Juran gave you jurin smiles crop.
Saijanai Kuhn: laters
Turtle: Yeah, bye...
Benjamin Linden: Grey, let's plan to talk about build tools next week if you'd like
Grey Kurka: Sure
Wyn Galbraith smiles for Benjamin.
Benjamin Linden: I have to run off to another meeting unfortunately
Laetizia Coronet: good topic
Benja Kepler: thx
Benja Kepler: Benjamin
Benjamin Linden: also JayR, feel free to IM me about the voice chat UI
Ciaran Laval: Bye Benjamin
Saijanai Kuhn: making a list and checking it twice (in keeping with white beard motif)
Benja Kepler: k
Benjamin Linden: thanks folks!
Laetizia Coronet: thanks Benjamin for hosting this
Jurin Juran: bye benjamin
Squirrel Wood: Thanks for taking the time to listen to us ^^
JayR Cela: Ben OK I will
Saijanai Kuhn: thanks benjamin
Dale Glass: bye
Wyn Galbraith: B-bye!!! :D
Benjamin Linden: my pleasure, take care!
