Transcript of Benjamin Linden's office hours:

[15:03] aliceinwire Bleac: hello benjamin :D
[15:03] Benjamin Linden: hi guys!
[15:03] Squirrel Wood: Yes!
[15:03] Squirrel Wood: Hello ^^
[15:03] aliceinwire Bleac: how are you today ?
[15:03] Benjamin Linden: how is everyone?
[15:03] aliceinwire Bleac: not bad
[15:03] Squirrel Wood: The nut on my nose can now officially play over 2,800 sound effects ^^
[15:03] Benjamin Linden: I'm doing well, thanks. Finally getting over a cold I've had for two weeks.
[15:04] aliceinwire Bleac: wow
[15:04] Benjamin Linden: haha that's impressive
[15:04] aliceinwire Bleac: news about dazzle ?
[15:04] aliceinwire Bleac: and you have no lag with so many sound :P
[15:04] Benjamin Linden: it looks like we probably won't get dazzle out until sometime next year
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: there were delays from the Voice Chat update coming out
[15:05] Squirrel Wood: Ah
[15:05] aliceinwire Bleac: yeah and have more stable version
[15:05] aliceinwire Bleac: i have see
[15:05] aliceinwire Bleac: xml change
[15:05] aliceinwire Bleac: in the last windlight version too
[15:05] Benjamin Linden: which changes?
[15:05] Squirrel Wood: I have been reading through the blasphemous comments on the blog post about id verification... some people really need some education. badly.
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: blasphemous... lol
[15:06] Squirrel Wood: pure stupidity and ignorance.
[15:06] aliceinwire Bleac: no sorry is not about graphics things :P
[15:06] Benjamin Linden: Have you guys done the Age verification process?
[15:07] aliceinwire Bleac: i have listen about it
[15:07] Squirrel Wood: get dazzle out when it is ready for deployment and make sure to take all the time you need to make it shine ^^
[15:07] Squirrel Wood: age verify... fails for me
[15:07] Squirrel Wood: though I'm not a us citizen
[15:07] aliceinwire Bleac: it use ag verification server
[15:07] aliceinwire Bleac: me too
[15:07] Squirrel Wood: and my passport expired september 2006
[15:07] aliceinwire Bleac: but the server is also for non us citizen
[15:08] aliceinwire Bleac: the german people ahve some problem
[15:08] aliceinwire Bleac: with age verfication
[15:08] Squirrel Wood: their database is way out of date though as some people had to input old addresses to pass verification
[15:08] aliceinwire Bleac: hello sabina
[15:08] Sabina Stenvaag: hi everybody!
[15:10] Jacek Antonelli: Hullos, everyone!
[15:10] Benjamin Linden: hi Sabina
[15:10] Benjamin Linden: Hi Jacek
[15:10] Sabina Stenvaag: howdy!
[15:10] Jacek Antonelli: rezrezrez
[15:10] Jason Swain: Hello Jacek
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: yes, someone on our team didn't pass age verification and I believe it's because she moved recently
[15:11] aliceinwire Bleac: i relog
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: mine went through quite smoothly
[15:11] Squirrel Wood: mine failed every single time I tried
[15:11] Jason Swain hasnt tried and doesnt really want to try
[15:11] Sabina Stenvaag: i've heard that ppl in GFermany are having lots of troubles with the age verification too!
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: where is your citizenship, Squirrel
[15:12] aliceinwire Mug of strawberry v.2 : Hot strong coffee!!
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: Jason, it's actually quite painless and doesn't require much information
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: are you concerned about trusting a third-party with your personl info?
[15:12] Sabina Stenvaag: i wanna learn more about 'Arestotal' or however you spell it!
[15:12] Jason Swain: yes very much so Ben
[15:13] Sabina Stenvaag: DITTO jason!
[15:13] Squirrel Wood: Age Verification Failed The information that you provided did not match available public records. This can occur if your information has changed recently. If you moved or changed your name in the last 18 months, please try age verification again with your prior address or name.
[15:13] Jacek Antonelli: Yeah, non-US Resis have been having some trouble. And apparently it's illegal to mail photo copies of their passport etc. to the US, so they can't manually verify. >_<
[15:13] Squirrel Wood: Austria is where I am
[15:13] Squirrel Wood: And I have not moved or relocated in the past 20 years
[15:14] Jacek Antonelli: The whole thing makes me a bit hot under the collar, but I'll try to contain myself.
[15:14] aliceinwire Bleac: who can make a script error?
[15:14] Jason Swain: what type of error alice?
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: why does it upset you Jacek?
[15:14] aliceinwire Bleac: what you want
[15:14] Sabina Stenvaag: the age ver company is 'Aristotle-Integrity' i wann know more aobut them and thier record of privacy i think before i verify
[15:14] aliceinwire Bleac: no inportant
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: apparently they do not actually store the information
[15:14] aliceinwire Bleac: i can't build here
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: they run a check then the data is gone
[15:15] aliceinwire Bleac: and attach it to yourself
[15:15] Squirrel Wood: passport failed, SSN failed...
[15:15] Squirrel Wood: thus my available options both failed. got no drivers license or any other documents
[15:16] Harleen Gretzky: I had to use the address where I was when I got my SSN (my parents house, which I have not lived at for 25 years) to get SSN to work
[15:17] Benjamin Linden: wow
[15:17] Benjamin Linden: well hopefully they're working out the kinks
[15:17] Jacek Antonelli: It seems like an intrusive hoop to jump through. It's rejecting non-US adults, and US minors can just swipe their dad's driver's license and verify under their name. It solves nothing. Except, I gather, to qualify LL for some insurance again civil lawsuits, or some such business thing.
[15:17] Benjamin Linden: if it doesn't become a more reliable process people won't use it and parcel owners won't be able to restrict access based on it
[15:17] Mug of Coffee : Hot strong coffee!!
[15:18] Harleen Gretzky: That was teh orignal beta though for conceirge residets, my alt was able to use the gridwide beta with my current address
[15:18] Squirrel Wood: I have been to the US of A several times in the past couple years so I assume they should have my data
[15:18] Squirrel Wood: with all the information that the US wants on inbound flights...
[15:18] Mug of Coffee : Hot strong coffee!!
[15:18] Benjamin Linden: Jacek, we are definitely doing a lot to control fraud
[15:19] Benjamin Linden: as it makes it much more difficult for us to provide payment options to residents
[15:19] Lone Worbridge: hello
[15:20] Sabina Stenvaag: will ther be any notice at to when the freee beta testing is gonna end?
[15:20] Jacek Antonelli: *nods* That's all well and good. It's the specific solution (some would call it a non-solution) that bothers me. Bad side effects, and doesn't accomplish the goal. Very inelegant.
[15:20] Sabina Stenvaag: as to when*
[15:20] Benjamin Linden: which free beta testing, Sabina?
[15:20] Squirrel Wood: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-833
[15:20] Squirrel Wood: Age Verification Beta is not working
[15:20] Sabina Stenvaag: whenre age ver is '
[15:20] Sabina Stenvaag: free'
[15:21] Benjamin Linden: I don't know of plans to charge for it Sabina
[15:21] aliceinwire Bleac: you are using dazlle benjamin ?
[15:21] Benjamin Linden: yes I am Aliceinwire
[15:21] Sabina Stenvaag: ok--the faq says During the beta period, age verification will be free to Residents. No end date for the beta test has been specified. Once the beta test is over, a fee may be charged for getting age-verified, though no decision has been made around this."
[15:21] aliceinwire Bleac: see the error of my mug?
[15:21] Harleen Gretzky: The original blog post a few months ago said LL may charge for it
[15:21] Squirrel Wood: dazzle dazzle ^^
[15:21] Benjamin Linden: I see the script warning problem
[15:21] Sabina Stenvaag: alice i see yer mugs script error
[15:21] Squirrel Wood: Now what would a pokémon named Dazzle look like?
[15:22] Jacek Antonelli: Yay, Dazzle! Let's talk about Dazzle.
[15:22] aliceinwire Bleac: i see the script error window all white
[15:22] aliceinwire Bleac: and if i higlight
[15:22] Jacek Antonelli: It would be very shiny, Squirrel.
[15:22] aliceinwire Bleac: all dark
[15:22] Squirrel Wood: set it so script errors are shown in normal chat
[15:22] Harleen Gretzky: Error is Mug of Coffee: Couldn't find animation drink4758392120
[15:22] Jacek Antonelli: Ah, yes. The text colors in Dazzle are hard to read at first
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: I think she's demonstrating that the default colors are unreadable
[15:23] aliceinwire Bleac: yes
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: but you can set that color in preferences
[15:23] aliceinwire Bleac gave you Snapshot : Linden Village - Benjamin Linden, Beaumont (147, 162.
[15:23] aliceinwire Bleac: oh that's goo
[15:23] Sabina Stenvaag: oh--got it--hee ee
[15:23] Benjamin Linden: it's the last option under Text Chat
[15:23] aliceinwire Bleac: lol
[15:23] aliceinwire Bleac: :D
[15:24] Jacek Antonelli: Ben: has the Dazzle team been working on making the window background color changeable, in addition to the text color? Or is that not on the agenda?
[15:24] aliceinwire Bleac: right benjamin
[15:24] Benjamin Linden: do you mean the whole window, Jacek, or just the text fields in communicate window?
[15:25] aliceinwire Bleac: you can change all jacek
[15:25] Jacek Antonelli: The text fields are the higher priority. (Eventually it would be good to be able to change it all...)
[15:25] aliceinwire Bleac: you ahve see my purple version?
[15:25] Jacek Antonelli: ah, not yet. I need to look at that
[15:25] aliceinwire Bleac: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliceinwire/1895991861/
[15:26] Jacek Antonelli: Did you change colors_base.xml to change the background?
[15:26] aliceinwire Bleac: yes
[15:26] Jacek Antonelli: 'kay
[15:26] aliceinwire Bleac: for change tabs i have change the color of texture
[15:26] Jacek Antonelli: *nods*
[15:27] Jason Swain: ooo I can read the text clearly in that image. its the normal white on grey....cool!
[15:27] aliceinwire Bleac: with photoshops
[15:27] Jacek Antonelli: Oh! There was something I wanted to ask about. *thinks*
[15:27] aliceinwire Bleac: you can change also that
[15:27] Benjamin Linden: Jacek, I'm hoping as part of Dazzle to do some documentation explaining how we did it
[15:27] Jacek Antonelli: Oh. Reloading UI! I noticed in the source code that reloading the UI has been disabled, because it's broken (crashes when used)
[15:27] Benjamin Linden: so people can go make their own skins, like Aliceinwire did
[15:28] aliceinwire Bleac: yeah
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: there's going to be a lot of work done internally to improve the UI architecture next quarter
[15:28] Jacek Antonelli: cool
[15:28] aliceinwire Bleac: ^_^
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: which will make customization even easier
[15:28] Sabina Stenvaag: goody!
[15:29] aliceinwire Bleac: it's esier also now :P
[15:29] Benjamin Linden: yes, but no one knows how :-)
[15:29] aliceinwire Bleac: you have only to play with setup
[15:29] aliceinwire Bleac: is fun
[15:29] Benjamin Linden: some things we're doing in dazzle will definitely help -- like converting graphics to targas
[15:29] Benjamin Linden: and organizing colors_base.xml
[15:30] aliceinwire Bleac: :D
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: we're also exposing more of the layout to XML
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: like in the main toolbar
[15:30] Jacek Antonelli: I was going to take a look into how hard it would be to load colors_base.xml and images from a skin folder. So instead of having just the one colors_base.xml in application_settings, and the one folder of textures in skin/xui/... there could be skins/xui/aliceinwire_purple/colors_base.xml
[15:30] aliceinwire Bleac: ihih
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: yes Jacek, most of the UI debugging tools in the debug menu are broken, unfortunately
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: that would be very cool, Jacek
[15:31] Jacek Antonelli: Lots to clean up and fix >_< Makes your job hard, hehe
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: multiple color files
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: yes!!
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: none of this is very easy. we're constantly running into technical blockers
[15:31] aliceinwire Bleac: that can be great
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: like for example, you can't set the color of the title bar on an unfocused window :-(
[15:31] aliceinwire Bleac: we can improve in the client the skin option
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli: Hrmm.
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: but I'm creating a gigantic list of things for the developers to fix
[15:32] aliceinwire Bleac: for change from one sin to another
[15:32] aliceinwire Bleac: skin
[15:32] Sabina Stenvaag: i'm ure the dev's will love it!
[15:32] Jacek Antonelli: Cool. Could you make that list public? Then volunteers can chip away at it, too!
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: yes, that's a great idea!
[15:33] aliceinwire Bleac: the client restart
[15:33] aliceinwire Bleac: with the new skin
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: what's that, aliceinwire?
[15:33] aliceinwire Bleac: for chose from a skin to another from client menu
[15:33] aliceinwire Bleac: a option
[15:34] aliceinwire Bleac: in the client menu
[15:34] Jacek Antonelli: Ah, you mean we should add an open to the client menu to pick a skin? And then when you restart the viewer, it loads the new skin?
[15:34] aliceinwire Bleac: client > skin > and the list of skin
[15:34] aliceinwire Bleac: yes
[15:35] Jacek Antonelli: that would be cool
[15:35] Sabina Stenvaag: yes good idea
[15:35] aliceinwire Bleac: exactly
[15:35] aliceinwire Bleac: similar to winamp function
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: ideally that would be a mainline feature
[15:35] Jacek Antonelli: and once reloading the UI gets fixed, we could even skip the restarting the viewer step, and just reload while running
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: like in preferences
[15:35] aliceinwire Bleac: today i'm feeling torley mode
[15:35] aliceinwire Bleac: and tomorrow blue mode
[15:36] Jacek Antonelli: hehe
[15:36] Benjamin Linden: that will also come from the architecture work
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: :D
[15:36] Jacek Antonelli: *nods*
[15:36] Benjamin Linden: dazzle is sort of an interim step before true skinning
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: for change the skin color
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: you have togo on
[15:36] Benjamin Linden: a test to see what needs to be done
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: with step and try
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: on color_base.xml
[15:36] aliceinwire Bleac: if you can modify all color in one time
[15:37] aliceinwire Bleac: is fantastic :D
[15:37] Benjamin Linden: I have a non-dazzle question
[15:37] Jacek Antonelli: Shoot
[15:37] aliceinwire Bleac: but sometime i forget a color :P
[15:37] Benjamin Linden: did anyone notice the bandwidth/packet loss meter going away?
[15:37] Jacek Antonelli: Yes :(
[15:37] Jason Swain: Yes :(
[15:37] Ciaran Laval: lol
[15:37] aliceinwire Bleac: yes substitute
[15:37] Sabina Stenvaag: yes
[15:37] Harleen Gretzky: yes
[15:37] aliceinwire Bleac: bysearch
[15:37] aliceinwire Bleac: the new meta search
[15:37] Sabina Stenvaag: y'all don't want to remind us of the lag is that the motive?
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: hehehe
[15:38] Harleen Gretzky: Nicholaz brought it back in his viewer
[15:38] aliceinwire Bleac: i can't see when i reach 500% of packet loss
[15:38] aliceinwire Bleac: i'm sad
[15:38] aliceinwire Bleac: :P
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: :D
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: The top menu is getting crowded. Especially since I have the Client and Server menus showing, too
[15:38] Benjamin Linden: haha Nicholaz
[15:38] Jacek Antonelli: err, the top bar, not top menu
[15:39] Benjamin Linden: he would be happy if we never change anything ever again
[15:39] Jacek Antonelli: I bet he just thinks you're changing the wrong things ;D
[15:39] aliceinwire Bleac: but you can use ctrl + shift +n
[15:39] aliceinwire Bleac: for control the bandwhit
[15:39] Harleen Gretzky: lol, he changes teh chatterbox back too :P
[15:39] Jason Swain: I like the Nicholaz lay out normally
[15:39] Benjamin Linden: I knwo :-)
[15:39] Benjamin Linden: know
[15:39] Benjamin Linden: well a couple things
[15:39] Benjamin Linden: so we decided to make showing the packet loss meter an option
[15:40] aliceinwire Bleac: is better than the simple packet loss
[15:40] Benjamin Linden: but it replaces the search box
[15:40] aliceinwire Bleac: oh another option
[15:40] Benjamin Linden: haha yes
[15:40] aliceinwire Bleac: can be making the volume button invisible
[15:40] aliceinwire Bleac: when you pass over with the mouse it show
[15:40] Benjamin Linden: you mean in the lower part of the screen?
[15:40] Benjamin Linden: well I would like the *whole* UI to disappear until you mouse over
[15:40] aliceinwire Bleac: no only the talk and volume
[15:41] aliceinwire Bleac: oh that's great too
[15:41] Ciaran Laval: Ooh not sure about that myself
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User_Interface_Improvements
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: it would be optional
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: you could pin things in place
[15:41] Jacek Antonelli: Yes, the idea of pop-out things in the corner would be great. Especially for search could pop out
[15:41] Ciaran Laval: I'd like parts of it to disappear and to be able to lock other parts
[15:41] aliceinwire Bleac: yeah and for music and video play
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: exactly, Ciaran
[15:41] aliceinwire Bleac: and the voice control
[15:42] Benjamin Linden: there's an image on that link I just posted
[15:42] Ciaran Laval: Oh I'd be happy with that then!!!
[15:42] Benjamin Linden: that shows an idea I had for this a while back
[15:42] aliceinwire Bleac: yes
[15:42] aliceinwire Bleac: i was see it
[15:42] aliceinwire Bleac: and is impressive
[15:42] Benjamin Linden: someday I hope to see this built
[15:42] aliceinwire Bleac: me too
[15:42] Benjamin Linden: it's very difficult with our current UI though
[15:42] aliceinwire Bleac: i agreee
[15:43] Ciaran Laval: How long has the buy currency icon been there?
[15:43] Jacek Antonelli: Hrmmm. I think it has been there for a couple months, maybe?
[15:44] Jacek Antonelli: Just guessing, not too sure.
[15:44] Harleen Gretzky: Since the Lindex came into existance
[15:44] Harleen Gretzky: years ago
[15:44] Ciaran Laval: I've only just noticed it, it's a bit small on my screen
[15:44] Benjamin Linden: it's been there as long as I've been here :-)
[15:44] Jacek Antonelli: Well, I think it used to be you just clicked on your balance to pop up the Buy Currency window?
[15:44] Benjamin Linden: yes, we were considering eliminating it
[15:44] aliceinwire Bleac: :D
[15:45] Benjamin Linden: since it's redundant with the balance
[15:45] Benjamin Linden: hi JetZep
[15:45] JetZep Zabelin: hi =)
[15:45] aliceinwire Bleac: i jetzep
[15:45] aliceinwire Bleac: Halllooooo
[15:45] Jacek Antonelli: :D
[15:45] Sabina Stenvaag: gettin rid of it will free up a lil space up there too
[15:45] aliceinwire Bleac: so who have try dazzle ?
[15:45] Sabina Stenvaag: i vote yes--get rid of it!
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: for people using dazzle, is the transparency on the menus too much?
[15:46] aliceinwire Bleac: no i love it
[15:46] Sabina Stenvaag: i tried it for like 10 min.--the IM window was unbearable for me!
[15:46] aliceinwire Bleac: mmm
[15:46] Sabina Stenvaag: exctly benjamine!
[15:46] Jacek Antonelli: The transparency in the menus... seems to be only 5% transparent or so. Is that how other people are seeing it? Or just me?
[15:46] aliceinwire Bleac: you have try the last revision ?
[15:46] aliceinwire Bleac: sabin
[15:46] Benjamin Linden: oh and to the comments about the communicate window (and Nicholaz), the contacts window will soon be removable from the communicate window
[15:47] Sabina Stenvaag: not likely alice--it was over 1 months ago that i tired it
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: yes, the transparency is about 5%
[15:47] aliceinwire Bleac: so it's not the last
[15:47] aliceinwire Bleac: you have to try the last
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: what was it about the IM window that didn't work for you Sabina?
[15:47] aliceinwire Bleac: much better
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: was the text contrast?
[15:47] aliceinwire Bleac: yep
[15:47] Sabina Stenvaag: ben--i *think* it was the background/transparency issue--i could NOT read the chat agains hte background
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: we're still working on that
[15:48] aliceinwire Bleac: i think she have try the one of one month ago
[15:48] aliceinwire Bleac: whit windowes problem
[15:48] Benjamin Linden: yeah, it's gotten better since then but still not great
[15:48] Jacek Antonelli: BTW, here are the chat colors I'm using at the moment in Dazzle, and they are mostly usable:
[15:48] Sabina Stenvaag: yeh--i'll DL the current one tonight
[15:48] aliceinwire Bleac: on the communication chat
[15:48] Benjamin Linden: Jacek, since our chat last week we've decided to go with a dark background in the IM/chat windows
[15:48] Jacek Antonelli: (Oh, that's good :) )
[15:48] Benjamin Linden: because that's the only way we could make it work with the chat console (floating text)
[15:49] aliceinwire Bleac: is for that in my purple version i was not change the windows communication
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: but the overall colors will still be light
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: I keep going back and forth about whether or not that's a good idea
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: I think it will take folks some time to get used to
[15:49] Jacek Antonelli: System Chat: R:110, G:153, B:26 (yellowish-green)
[15:50] aliceinwire Bleac: ihih
[15:50] Jacek Antonelli: User Chat: 104 for all RGB (medium gray... I don't like it, but it's somewhat readible both in the Communicate and the chat bubble)
[15:50] Jason Swain: I personally find that if the UI is too bright that when I am working at night I get eye strang quicker
[15:50] aliceinwire Bleac: and for the nord coordinate in the mini map
[15:50] aliceinwire Bleac: i have see also a jira issue about it
[15:50] Jacek Antonelli: Objects: R:166, G:125, B:212 (darkish lavendar)
[15:51] aliceinwire Bleac: in the dazzle the N is not show
[15:51] Jacek Antonelli: Owner: R:251, G:92, B:193 (pinkish)
[15:51] aliceinwire Bleac: now is more better
[15:51] Jacek Antonelli: URLs: R:83, G:165, B:220 (sky bluish)
[15:51] aliceinwire Bleac: so i think we can suggest
[15:51] aliceinwire Bleac: to download latest version
