Transcript of Benjamin Linden's office hours:
[10:04] | Benjamin Linden: | hi Christian |
[10:04] | Benjamin Linden: | welcome |
[10:04] | Christian Colville: | hello Benjamin |
[10:05] | Christian Colville: | nice office! my first visit to an office hour... |
[10:05] | Benjamin Linden: | thanks! |
[10:05] | Benjamin Linden: | let's take a seat |
[10:05] | Christian Colville: | sure |
[10:06] | Christian Colville: | my interest is land search |
[10:07] | Benjamin Linden: | ok great |
[10:07] | Benjamin Linden: | what's on your mind? |
[10:07] | Christian Colville: | I've set up a website that pulls land sales information off the servers using libsecondlife |
[10:07] | Benjamin Linden: | oh cool |
[10:08] | Christian Colville: | its a free facility.. it lets people do more detailed searches than the in-world tool |
[10:08] | Benjamin Linden: | can I see it? |
[10:09] | Christian Colville: | sure its at http://www.sllandlist.com |
[10:09] | Benjamin Linden: | so this is in flahs |
[10:09] | Benjamin Linden: | flash |
[10:09] | Christian Colville: | yep it actually uses a development system called OpenLaszlo |
[10:10] | Christian Colville: | which compiles to a flash object |
[10:10] | Christian Colville: | so I wanted to let you guys know what I was up to |
[10:11] | Christian Colville: | plus it occurred to me that you might well decide yourselves at some point to put land search on an external site |
[10:11] | Benjamin Linden: | there's been a lot of discussion lately about what to do with Search |
[10:11] | Benjamin Linden: | since what we have right now isn't that great |
[10:11] | Benjamin Linden: | let me play with this for a sec |
[10:11] | Christian Colville: | sure |
[10:12] | Christian Colville: | it updates every 2 hours |
[10:12] | Christian Colville: | plus the technology is unscrapable |
[10:12] | Benjamin Linden: | because it's flash? |
[10:13] | Christian Colville: | well yes there are flash decompilers but I think this OpenLaszlo system produces flash objects that are difficult to decompile |
[10:13] | Benjamin Linden: | I see, cool |
[10:13] | Benjamin Linden: | wow this is impressive |
[10:13] | Christian Colville: | thanks |
[10:13] | Benjamin Linden: | does it include land auctions as well? |
[10:14] | Christian Colville: | no |
[10:14] | Christian Colville: | I'm thinking of putting land rentals on it next |
[10:14] | Christian Colville: | auctions would require me to write an HTML scraper to get the info off your site |
[10:14] | Benjamin Linden: | ah I see |
[10:15] | Benjamin Linden: | I like the way when you click a link it jumps straight to that spot on the map |
[10:15] | Benjamin Linden: | that's really cool |
[10:15] | Christian Colville: | great |
[10:15] | Benjamin Linden: | it would be nice to see the preview image that you can see when you do land searches in-world |
[10:16] | Benjamin Linden: | hey Christian I have to take a phone call real quick, can you hang on? |
[10:16] | Christian Colville: | yes that was a little technically demanding and would use a lot of server space |
[10:16] | Christian Colville: | sure |
[10:16] | Benjamin Linden: | thanks brb |
[10:21] | Benjamin Linden: | ok sorry about that |
[10:21] | Christian Colville: | np |
[10:21] | Benjamin Linden: | so when you said it would take a lot of server space, did you mean space on your webserver? |
[10:21] | Christian Colville: | yeah |
[10:22] | Benjamin Linden: | I see |
[10:22] | Benjamin Linden: | there's no way to directly link to the image that's on our servers? |
[10:22] | Christian Colville: | plus I'd have to work out how to translate the data in a packet into a jpg |
[10:22] | Benjamin Linden: | oh I see |
[10:22] | Benjamin Linden: | so theoretically it could be done dynamically |
[10:22] | Christian Colville: | I don't know if a direct link is possible |
[10:22] | Christian Colville: | that would be ideal |
[10:23] | Christian Colville: | but no idea how to get a url from an image LLUUID |
[10:23] | Benjamin Linden: | yes, I'm not sure if that's possible |
[10:23] | Benjamin Linden: | I could ask some folks for you |
[10:23] | Christian Colville: | in my experience most images are missing or standard landowner ones |
[10:23] | Christian Colville: | that would be great |
[10:24] | Christian Colville: | yeah so partly I wanted to talk to you out of concern that you might sometime soon put the land search on an external website which would of course make my site superfluous really |
[10:25] | Christian Colville: | I mean of course you will do what you will do but maybe what I've done could help you in that circumstance |
[10:25] | Benjamin Linden: | well I can't speak to specific initiatives that we have underway of course but there is an effort to make across-the-board improvements in search |
[10:26] | Christian Colville: | sure |
[10:27] | Benjamin Linden: | I will definitely show your site to the relevant people. it's possible there's something we could leverage in our new search tools |
[10:27] | Benjamin Linden: | tell me more about your development group |
[10:27] | Christian Colville: | good that would be great |
[10:27] | Christian Colville: | oh its just me lol |
[10:28] | Christian Colville: | In r/l I'm a programmer I do a lot of projects for small businesses |
[10:28] | Benjamin Linden: | cool. what type of programming? |
[10:29] | Christian Colville: | I do asp.net c# javascript mysql this openlaszlo tool etc |
[10:29] | Benjamin Linden: | great! where are you located? |
[10:29] | Christian Colville: | I'm in London UK |
[10:30] | Benjamin Linden: | cool. Linden Lab is opening office in Brighton. |
[10:30] | Christian Colville: | oh that's a great place |
[10:30] | Revolution Perenti: | hi ben :) |
[10:30] | Christian Colville: | very funky and alternative, by the sea. no beach though |
[10:30] | Benjamin Linden: | hi Revolution |

[10:31] | Revolution Perenti: | hi chris |
[10:31] | Benjamin Linden: | nah, just chillin as you can see :-) |
[10:31] | Christian Colville: | grins |
[10:31] | Revolution Perenti: | dont blame you, thought i come over for a bit now i chillin instead of coding |
[10:31] | Revolution Perenti: | met most of the lindens :) |
[10:31] | Benjamin Linden: | is that c++ code I see scrolling on your screen :-) |
[10:31] | Revolution Perenti: | hehe yea |
[10:31] | Benjamin Linden: | cool |
[10:32] | Revolution Perenti: | im a c++ and php coder myself |
[10:32] | Benjamin Linden: | are you a developer too? |
[10:32] | Benjamin Linden: | nice |
[10:32] | Benjamin Linden: | do you know Christian? |
[10:32] | Christian Colville: | its developer corner! |
[10:32] | Benjamin Linden: | haha yeah, this is great |
[10:32] | Revolution Perenti: | no never met him, also i really big opensource fan, everything i do goes out to the public |
[10:32] | Revolution Perenti: | yopu mind if i sit down |
[10:32] | Benjamin Linden: | excellent! |
[10:33] | Benjamin Linden: | you may have seen my mail a few weeks ago to sldev |
[10:33] | Benjamin Linden: | we'd love to get more people working on UI issues |
[10:33] | Christian Colville: | ok |
[10:33] | Revolution Perenti: | before i found sl , i use to develope alot of game toolkits |
[10:33] | Christian Colville: | what's sldev? |
[10:33] | Revolution Perenti: | from game engines, graphics libs, matrix and math engines |
[10:33] | Benjamin Linden: | Christian, sldev is a mailing list for people interested in the open source project |
[10:34] | Benjamin Linden: | you should sign up! |
[10:34] | Christian Colville: | ok! |
[10:34] | Revolution Perenti: | oh incase you cant tell im not a woman hehe just my av is :) |
[10:34] | Benjamin Linden: | there's lots of general discussion about developing for SL |
[10:34] | Christian Colville: | right |
[10:34] | Benjamin Linden: | ok thanks for clarifying Revolution :-) |
[10:34] | Revolution Perenti: | guys like to play female charactors :P |
[10:34] | Christian Colville: | I've not done too much C++ tho |
[10:34] | Benjamin Linden: | I've noticed that |
[10:35] | Revolution Perenti: | even the lindins like torley |
[10:35] | Benjamin Linden: | well if you know c# you should be able to pick it up Christian |
[10:35] | Christian Colville: | is that so Ben? |
[10:35] | Lower Deck Doors: Jeanluc Despres is at the door.
[10:35] | Christian Colville: | sure |
[10:35] | Benjamin Linden: | actually Torley will probably be by later |
[10:35] | Benjamin Linden: | we have a meeting at 11am |
[10:35] | Revolution Perenti: | was digging around the viewer source last night , see if i can sort some the bugs myself, also been thinking of the idear of porting it to xbox |
[10:36] | Christian Colville: | ok |
[10:36] | Security Panel: | Jeanluc Despres, you are not authorized to use this console. |
[10:36] | Christian Colville: | you'd get hoards of users from that.. |
[10:36] | Revolution Perenti: | there still alot to be done by the devs but i love how far you guys have come sofar |
[10:36] | Security Panel: | Jeanluc Despres, you are not authorized to use this console. |
[10:37] | Benjamin Linden: | thanks Revolution |
[10:37] | Revolution Perenti: | filled out job app otherday with there Uk office |
[10:37] | Benjamin Linden: | wow, an xbox port would be awesome! |
[10:37] | Benjamin Linden: | oh cool are you in the UK too? |
[10:37] | Revolution Perenti: | yea using the openxbox sdk |
[10:37] | Benjamin Linden: | I was just telling Christian about the Brighton office |
[10:37] | Camber Front Door: Jeanluc Despres is at the door.
[10:37] | Benjamin Linden: | should be a fun place to work |
[10:37] | Revolution Perenti: | ported many things to the xbox |
[10:37] | Camber Front Door: Jeanluc Despres is at the door.
[10:37] | Christian Colville: | yeah Im in London Revolution |
[10:37] | Revolution Perenti: | as long its opensource i dont mind porting it |
[10:37] | Revolution Perenti: | i live next to the beach :) |
[10:38] | Benjamin Linden: | do you think it's doable? |
[10:38] | Revolution Perenti: | broadstairs, kent |
[10:38] | Christian Colville: | nice.. |
[10:38] | Benjamin Linden: | I worked in Richmond for several months back in 2001 |
[10:38] | Benjamin Linden: | cute town |
[10:38] | Christian Colville: | yeah |
[10:38] | Benjamin Linden: | but I had to move into the city, so I lived in Earls Court |
[10:38] | Christian Colville: | its quite prety Richmond |
[10:38] | Christian Colville: | Earls Court has toomuch traffic tho |
[10:39] | Revolution Perenti: | you living in the UK now bed or lindens moved you out to the states |
[10:39] | Revolution Perenti: | *ben |
[10:39] | Revolution Perenti: | i was living in london for a while, but live away from london now most of my work comes from the internet |
[10:39] | Benjamin Linden: | actually I live in Seattle |
[10:39] | Revolution Perenti: | no need for an office, even i do get shipped out ot LA and NY alot |
[10:39] | Benjamin Linden: | I was living here when i started working for LL |
[10:40] | Christian Colville: | ok |
[10:40] | Christian Colville: | there's a lot of Microsoft offices round there I've heard |
[10:40] | Benjamin Linden: | haha yes |
[10:40] | Benjamin Linden: | that was actually my previous employer :-) |
[10:40] | Revolution Perenti: | lo ldont tell me about m$ im a linux user :P |
[10:40] | Christian Colville: | ok grins |
[10:41] | Benjamin Linden: | haha I was just up at LinuxfestNorthwest, north of Seattle last weekend |
[10:41] | Benjamin Linden: | very different crowd than at my last job :-) |
[10:41] | Revolution Perenti: | got sick of windows in the end, never really needed it for coding |
[10:41] | Christian Colville: | yeah? |
[10:41] | Benjamin Linden: | I worked on Visual Studio at Microsoft. it's a pretty good IDE |
[10:41] | Revolution Perenti: | linux more sutiable |
[10:41] | Christian Colville: | I love the VS IDE |
[10:41] | Revolution Perenti: | yes i have that too , but rarely touch it now days |
[10:42] | Benjamin Linden: | that's good to hear, Christian |
[10:42] | Revolution Perenti: | only log into windows for games or when im doing windows ports and testing |
[10:42] | Christian Colville: | lets you do immensely complex operations very easily |
[10:42] | Benjamin Linden: | what do you code in Revolution? |
[10:42] | Revolution Perenti: | c++ and php |
[10:42] | Benjamin Linden: | I meant which IDE, sorry |
[10:42] | Revolution Perenti: | started in basic , then got qulificed in c++ |
[10:42] | Christian Colville: | have you heard of OpenLaszlo Revolution? |
[10:42] | Revolution Perenti: | oh vs 2003 in windows |
[10:43] | Revolution Perenti: | but mostly coding php now days |
[10:43] | Revolution Perenti: | using linux and zend |
[10:43] | Suzanne Zeluco: | hi there |
[10:43] | Benjamin Linden: | hi Suzanne, welcome! |
[10:43] | Suzanne Zeluco: | thank you =) |
[10:43] | Christian Colville: | Hi Suzanne |
[10:43] | Suzanne Zeluco: | hi Christian, Revolution |
[10:43] | Benjamin Linden: | I'm super excited you guys are potentially interested in open source |
[10:43] | Revolution Perenti: | hi suzanne |
[10:43] | Revolution Perenti: | i saw rob yesterday at his meeting |
[10:44] | Benjamin Linden: | did you come for office hours Suzanne or are you just stopping by? |
[10:44] | Benjamin Linden: | oh yeah, Rob sits right next to me |
[10:44] | Revolution Perenti: | trying to see how sl involving community wise before i dig into opensource work for sl |
[10:44] | Suzanne Zeluco: | i came for office hours yes ... i hope not with an inappropriate question |
[10:44] | Benjamin Linden: | there are no inappropriate questions! |
[10:44] | Benjamin Linden: | have a seat |
[10:44] | Suzanne Zeluco: | ok thank you =) |
[10:45] | Revolution Perenti: | are many community contribs going in sl atm Ben |
[10:45] | Benjamin Linden: | yes, actually I have some stats right here, hang on |
[10:46] | Revolution Perenti: | becuase its going to be prety big project making sl opensource |
[10:46] | Benjamin Linden: | 34 patches by 18 unique authors have been accepted into the Viewer code |
[10:46] | Benjamin Linden: | hi wishmaster |
[10:46] | Benjamin Linden: | welcome! |
[10:46] | Christian Colville: | that's cool |
[10:46] | Revolution Perenti: | prety much what i do now with phpnuke and phpbb |
[10:46] | Suzanne Zeluco: | hi wishmaster |
[10:47] | Wishmaster Delcon: | hi |
[10:47] | Revolution Perenti: | becuase fixed, new features etc can be done by the community in code merged by the dev team |
[10:47] | Revolution Perenti: | hi wish |
[10:47] | Wishmaster Delcon: | hi rev |
[10:47] | Christian Colville: | I think open source is the way to produce reliable projects with the kind of scale of SL |
[10:47] | Suzanne Zeluco: | i didn't know where else to go ask, with the recent changes ... and i am sorry if this is not the right forum, Benjamin ... but i cannot get any feedback on any other channels at the moment |
[10:47] | Revolution Perenti: | this is my friend Ben :) support of my work |
[10:47] | Benjamin Linden: | nice bling Wishmaster :-) |
[10:48] | Wishmaster Delcon: | and help when i can |
[10:48] | Suzanne Zeluco: | have been living now almost 4 days in a sim with time dilation averaging 0.55, and there seems to be no cure to this, and can't get hold of anyone who can help |
[10:48] | Christian Colville: | hi Wishmaster |
[10:48] | Wishmaster Delcon: | thanks Ben |
[10:48] | Benjamin Linden: | are you a developer too Wish? |
[10:48] | Wishmaster Delcon: | hi christian |
[10:48] | Benjamin Linden: | Suzanne, can you tell me what you mean by time dilation? |
[10:48] | Revolution Perenti: | last year ben i was involved as lead developer of phpnuke , was involved making the first release of 8.x branch |
[10:49] | Wishmaster Delcon: | very nice |
[10:49] | Revolution Perenti: | but after that i had alot of commercial work ended up in america |
[10:49] | Suzanne Zeluco: | sim time dilation .. varying between something like 0.4 - 0.6 .. averaging at about 0.55 |
[10:49] | Christian Colville: | cool |
[10:49] | Revolution Perenti: | but trying to get more involved again opensource wise |
[10:49] | Revolution Perenti: | and being a big c++ user and sl user love to start using the code thats available |
[10:50] | Revolution Perenti: | and fix or improve in anyway i can |
[10:50] | Wishmaster Delcon: | i have just been helping rev with testing of a couple of projects |
[10:50] | Revolution Perenti: | take a seat wish, making the place look crowed hehe |
[10:50] | Wishmaster Delcon: | i wouldnt call myself a developer as such |
[10:50] | Benjamin Linden: | lol |
[10:50] | Christian Colville: | have to say I had a look at the open source setup instructions it was a bit daunting |
[10:51] | Benjamin Linden: | Suzanne, can you explain what you mean by time dilation, I haven't heard that term before |
[10:51] | Revolution Perenti: | so how would someone like me Bed submit code to SL devs |
[10:51] | Revolution Perenti: | ben |
[10:51] | Benjamin Linden: | does someone else know what Suzanne is talking about |
[10:51] | Revolution Perenti: | i should stop with the typos |
[10:51] | Benjamin Linden: | lol np Revolution |
[10:51] | Suzanne Zeluco: | time dilation means roughly how fast the sim is running or processing things, that is how i understood it |
[10:52] | Suzanne Zeluco: | time dilation 0.55 means the sim is kind of running about half speed |
[10:52] | Benjamin Linden: | hi Vent, welcome |
[10:52] | Vent Sinatra: | (hello there) |
[10:52] | Christian Colville: | I think time dilation is what happens when a sim cant make the standard FPS |
[10:52] | Benjamin Linden: | oh I see, Suzanne, so your sim is running slowly. are you experiencing a lot of lag? |
[10:52] | Suzanne Zeluco: | well yes, constantly and is the fourth day with no change |
[10:52] | Revolution Perenti: | i noticed ever since 1.15.0 release there been alot of bw usage too like there memory leaks in the kernal , but its coming from the viewer |
[10:53] | Revolution Perenti: | sometimes 70 - 80% cpu usage and im on dual core |
[10:53] | Vent Sinatra: | Hmmm, I have a similar, related issue |
[10:53] | Vent Sinatra: | not really related... |
[10:53] | Revolution Perenti: | cant even run more then one viewer anymore |
[10:53] | Revolution Perenti: | use to be able to log 2 accounts on my pc |
[10:53] | Vent Sinatra: | There is something happened with memory |
[10:53] | Revolution Perenti: | using dual core by giving each sl viewer its own cpu core |
[10:54] | Christian Colville: | the viewer is single-threaded isn't it? |
[10:54] | Revolution Perenti: | now if i run 2 its like a slide show |
[10:54] | Vent Sinatra: | no no, that isnt it, i tried it.... MY guess would be something in the grpahics |
[10:54] | Benjamin Linden: | interesting. I'll have to check with some people to see if there are any known memory issues |
[10:54] | Vent Sinatra: | graphics |
[10:54] | Vent Sinatra: | everything becomes slow, but not so much swapping.... |
[10:54] | Revolution Perenti: | well graphics are prety hi end, im using 2x sli nvidia 7900 |
[10:54] | Revolution Perenti: | there more then enough power |
[10:55] | Wishmaster Delcon: | the only issue regarding memory i have found is that it call for more virtual memory but that has only happened once |
[10:55] | Vent Sinatra: | Its fine when you start, but after a couple of hours |
[10:55] | Vent Sinatra: | whichis nothing in SL :) everything becomes slow |
[10:55] | Revolution Perenti: | only thing i can think of is start back tracing some of these issues in the viewer itself |
[10:55] | Christian Colville: | 1.15 runs ok on my system but SL has always been slow for me it taxes my little laptop too much |
[10:56] | Suzanne Zeluco: | i would appreciate, Benjamin, if you could get a grid monkey to restart Cass region ... if that could be possible ... it seems to not be fixing itself on it's own |
[10:56] | Vent Sinatra: | Benjamin, who is your network specialist, there is this one issue on jira which is bugging us for two weeks, and we are having such a hard time. SOmetimes Torley Linden is saying something |
[10:56] | Vent Sinatra: | but we hear so little.... |
[10:57] | Benjamin Linden: | I'll see if I can make that happen Suzanne. |
[10:57] | Vent Sinatra: | its related to internet routing issues.....ISPs.... |
[10:57] | Suzanne Zeluco: | ok, thank you very much .. i do appreciate =) |
[10:57] | Vent Sinatra: | Basically it is making SL impossible to use on all Californian SIms |
[10:58] | Revolution Perenti gave you Revolution Perenti Bear.
[10:58] | Revolution Perenti: | thanks Ben :) |
[10:58] | Benjamin Linden: | Vent, which Jira issue are you referring to |
[10:58] | Revolution Perenti: | building up quite a collection of linden bears |
[10:58] | Vent Sinatra: | SVC-124 |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | Wheeeeeee |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | Hello!!! |
[10:59] | Wishmaster Delcon: | thanks Benjamin |
[10:59] | Suzanne Zeluco: | hi Torley |
[10:59] | Benjamin Linden: | hey Torley! |
[10:59] | Christian Colville: | thanks Ben! |
[10:59] | Vent Sinatra: | HEy! Torley :))) Just talking about you! |
[10:59] | Christian Colville: | hello Torley |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | Hey Benjamin, Suzanne, Christian, Wishmaster, Vent, Revolution! |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | Nice to see you all here. |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | Oh kewl beans. |
[10:59] | Vent Sinatra: | Hmmm didnt expect you to look like that |
[10:59] | Revolution Perenti: | hi Torley |
[10:59] | Wishmaster Delcon: | hi torly |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | I change shape a lot... |
[10:59] | Torley Linden: | I'm a metamorph. |
[10:59] | Vent Sinatra: | cool |
[11:00] | Revolution Perenti: | hehe everytime i see you , your different |
[11:00] | Suzanne Zeluco: | well i won't disturb any further now, thank you Ben if you can help ... take care all |
[11:00] | Torley Linden: | :D |
[11:00] | Revolution Perenti: | always colorfull :P |
[11:00] | Christian Colville: | bye Suzanne |
[11:00] | Vent Sinatra: | You must be having a great time over there! :) |
[11:00] | Vent Sinatra: | Mmm, maybe i'll sit done then :) |
[11:01] | Vent Sinatra: | down |
[11:01] | Revolution Perenti: | my bear torley |
[11:01] | Benjamin Linden: | Vent, Torley said we're working with our network partners to fix address the issues in that Jira |
[11:01] | Christian Colville: | that's a great panda av Torley (assuming it IS a panda) |
[11:01] | Torley Linden: | Yes it is. |
[11:01] | Torley Linden: | PANDA STYLE! |
[11:01] | Vent Sinatra: | Ok , thats good to hair. If there is anything I can do for you guys. I'm online A LOT |
[11:02] | Christian Colville: | lol |
[11:02] | Revolution Perenti: | Torley there still seems to be issue with logins in some cases and high memory issues when sl been on for a while |
[11:02] | Torley Linden: | Vent, I'm going to keep posting updates to that issue as I get them. |
[11:02] | Vent Sinatra: | Happy to test, trace routes whatever |
[11:02] | Revolution Perenti: | im going to start backtracing some issues tonight nad bring these up with Rob |
[11:02] | Torley Linden: | Revolution: Any specific Issue Tracker #s you can point me to, or ones you reported? |
[11:02] | Torley Linden: | Specific causes should be determined. :) |
[11:02] | Revolution Perenti: | well right now seems to be related to x586 |
[11:02] | Vent Sinatra: | Torley, I understand, Just wanted to say, a lot is posted on jira and the forum... and not everyone understands how internet works. |
[11:03] | Revolution Perenti: | with dual cores , memory dumps are really cryitical since 1.15.0 release |
