Transcript of Benjamin Linden's office hours:

[15:08] Benjamin Linden: hi folks
[15:08] Malbers Linden: no, I'm here for the meeting
[15:08] Kii Lilliehook: that a great thing - one of the best new features I ever seen...
[15:08] Malbers Linden: I guess I just TP faster than Ben
[15:08] Jason Swain: Hello Ben
[15:08] Benjamin Linden: lol
[15:09] Benjamin Linden: wow, region is loading really slowly
[15:09] Malbers Linden: same for me -- rezzing slowly
[15:09] Kii Lilliehook: if it is even for you, it's probably not my bad internet connection...
[15:09] Benjamin Linden: squirrel is ruthed
[15:10] Jurin Juran: awww squirrel looks good to me
[15:10] Malbers Linden: not for me; same fun fuzzy self
[15:10] Squirrel Wood: OMy!
[15:10] Benjamin Linden: it's probably our network issues
[15:10] Squirrel Wood: Being ruthed sucks!
[15:10] McPhenius Swain: You are fine on my end
[15:11] Kii Lilliehook: fine for me, too.
[15:11] McPhenius Swain: Jurin looks like a monkey though
[15:11] Squirrel Wood: And Hello Benjamin and Malbers :)
[15:11] Benjamin Linden: any comments on the new RC?
[15:11] Jurin Juran: monkeys are more fun than ruth
[15:12] Moondust Fairey: dont crash
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: windlight is finally in the RC channel
[15:12] Benjamin Linden: so that's good news
[15:12] Jurin Juran: yeah, now if dazzle and windlight and speedtree :)
[15:13] Kii Lilliehook: yeah, now everybody has a beautifull sky.
[15:13] Benjamin Linden: and of course there's parcel media, which is an important step toward being able to display Web content in-world
[15:13] Kerry Giha: When I tried to change the media stream and clicked cancel the button didn't close the window like I would of expected it too. It appeared not to do anything
[15:13] Kerry Giha: That was the only new oddity I noticed about the RC
[15:14] Kii Lilliehook: yes, I couldn't belive that when I read the change log - was there any annoncement about it?
[15:14] Atrus Westland: Everyone that can use that feature you mean ^_~ I personally can't enable the fun stuff.
[15:14] Atrus Westland: But its nice that its in RC now.
[15:14] Benjamin Linden: Atrus, which stuff are you referring to?
[15:15] Atrus Westland: Atmospheric shaders and the like.
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: ah
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: yes, I tried it on my laptop and it slowed down quite a bit
[15:15] Atrus Westland: Its like kicking my computer hardware in the family jewls basicly.
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: lol
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: it's pretty though!
[15:15] Benjamin Linden: :-)
[15:15] Atrus Westland: Yeah
[15:16] Benjamin Linden: so let's see...
[15:16] Benjamin Linden: no Jacek today, I wanted to thank her for the great patches she submitted
[15:17] Malbers Linden: the login screen stuff?
[15:17] Benjamin Linden: right, she abstracted that stuff to XML
[15:17] Malbers Linden: ncie
[15:17] Benjamin Linden: so now we can style it to be more readable
[15:17] Malbers Linden: nice
[15:18] Squirrel Wood: Probably ui stuff... I would like to see the WOOOOOOOOSH on teleports again like we had last april 1st :p
[15:18] Benjamin Linden: which whoosh is that, Squirrel?
[15:18] Squirrel Wood: when you teleport. the text above the progress bar
[15:19] Atrus Westland laughs
[15:19] Jason Swain: Torley has the woosh on his videos at the start
[15:19] Squirrel Wood: hehe
[15:19] Squirrel Wood: I mean the text actually
[15:19] Malbers Linden: perhaps in the acorn skin you can make later
[15:19] Squirrel Wood: that replaced the normal, boring default message :p
[15:20] Atrus Westland: Just curious but anyone ever had the need to remap stuff for SL keys?
[15:20] Malbers Linden: I'vebeen in a couple discussions about that topic recently
[15:20] Atrus Westland: Yeah that would nice squirrel I'd change mine to "Down the rabbit hole"
[15:20] Malbers Linden: why do you need/want it?
[15:21] Atrus Westland: C:SI
[15:21] Atrus Westland: Its combat system
[15:21] Atrus Westland: I've had to manually edit my keys.ini file.
[15:21] Malbers Linden: aaah. DO you have special input devices for the combat system?
[15:21] Squirrel Wood: Ye. the ability to remap or query more keys would be a blast!
[15:21] Malbers Linden: or just generla optimization?
[15:22] Kii Lilliehook: I can't access some shortcuts on my german keybord.
[15:22] Kii Lilliehook: shift-ctrl-alt-=
[15:22] Atrus Westland: The folks that develop C:Si don't have special input devices but I think having a build in keymap for the client would make future support of perhaps a gamepad, or joystick and the like easier to implament.
[15:22] Malbers Linden: Yes, German was one of the cases for user key remapping.
[15:23] Malbers Linden: As for custom keymaps, I'vebeen talking to folks with disabilities.
[15:23] Kii Lilliehook: can you remap those shortcuts, too?
[15:23] Atrus Westland: Basicly trying to explain to people how to manually edit the keys.ini file is kind of a nightmare. And a lot of folks are wary about doing stuff like that.
[15:23] Malbers Linden: People with disabilities often have special input devices.
[15:24] Atrus Westland: Yeah
[15:24] Atrus Westland: Thats very true, special keybaords, or short hand keybaords. and the like.
[15:24] Atrus Westland: Anyway I was just curious.
[15:25] Malbers Linden: So, interesting use cases -- Localization, Accessibility, and Blowing stuff up faster.
[15:25] Benjamin Linden: lol
[15:25] Benjamin Linden: I think we should optimize for the last one :-)
[15:25] Kii Lilliehook: lol
[15:25] Squirrel Wood: in case of zero-day-griefer-alts... VERY yes
[15:26] Atrus Westland: Well depending on what you're doing, remaping the keys allows for faster killing and blowing stuff up ^_~
[15:26] Benjamin Linden: those are people that create alts for the sole purpose of griefing?
[15:26] Squirrel Wood: Apparently there are such bored individuals, yes.
[15:27] Atrus Westland: I have a stalker actually, the finds strange pleasure in locating me on alts and trying kill me.
[15:27] Benjamin Linden: hmm, that's unfortunate Atrus
[15:27] Malbers Linden: that's nuts.
[15:27] Atrus Westland: Quite so, but thats the world we live in.
[15:27] Kii Lilliehook: It might be strange, but I never ever really got problems with griefers....
[15:28] Atrus Westland: Oh trust me this one is hell bent lol.
[15:28] Atrus Westland: But anyway. Remaking keys and woosh messages!
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: does anyone have any bugs in the RC they want to go over?
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: windlight issues
[15:28] Squirrel Wood: not really
[15:28] Benjamin Linden: who's played with parcel media?
[15:29] Squirrel Wood: just downloaded the rc today so had no time to play with it yet
[15:29] Kii Lilliehook: me. displayed some web pages on a cube...
[15:29] Atrus Westland: Been playing with it since it can't out but I haven't seen any major issues with it yet.
[15:29] Kii Lilliehook: www.secondlife.com seem to load faster when rendered on a prim...
[15:29] Malbers Linden: was it easy to set up?
[15:29] Squirrel Wood: displaying web pages works without the requirement of quicktime
[15:29] Squirrel Wood: which is good.
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: is anyone here already using parcel media for a specific purpose?
[15:30] Atrus Westland: Are they still static?
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: sort of Atrus
[15:30] Malbers Linden: what do you mean by "static"?
[15:30] Kii Lilliehook: was a little bit disapointed that just one url is possible for a parcel.
[15:30] Malbers Linden: you mean, no interaction -- just a display?
[15:30] Benjamin Linden: right
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: long term we definitely want to have unlimited URL textures
[15:31] Atrus Westland: I know some people in the C:SI community plan on using it for tournament and records. Displaying that information etc.
[15:31] Benjamin Linden: hi JayR
[15:32] Atrus Westland: But outside of that can't say i've seen it used a great deal in the sims I frequent
[15:32] JayR Cela: hi everyone
[15:32] Squirrel Wood: Hellu
[15:32] Kii Lilliehook: I haven't tried yet: does the content update when the page changes?
[15:32] Malbers Linden: howdy JayR
[15:32] JayR Cela: who is responsible for the Dazzle client
[15:32] JayR Cela: it rocks
[15:32] Benjamin Linden: I'm not sure if it updates on the fly, Kii
[15:32] Kerry Giha: One thing is that when changing the parcel media stream the cancel button on that window doesn't appear to do anything
[15:32] Squirrel Wood: I guess it updates when you relog, re-enter the sim/parcel, turn this off / back on ...
[15:32] Malbers Linden: Yeah, the content should update dynamically
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: thanks for the kudos!
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: I can take some credit for that, JayR
[15:33] JayR Cela: killer job Ben
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: thanks :-)
[15:33] Squirrel Wood: It does NOT rock.
[15:33] Squirrel Wood: It DAZZLES!
[15:33] JayR Cela: the new RC is not very good
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: lol
[15:33] Benjamin Linden: are you having problems with the RC, JayR?
[15:34] Atrus Westland kicks jira in the nads
[15:34] JayR Cela: well / yes the RC seems to take forever for inventory to load
[15:34] Benjamin Linden: hmm interesting, I haven't been experiencing that personally
[15:34] JayR Cela: 2 hours and 6 re-loggs I finally got everthing
[15:34] Atrus Westland: How large is yer inventory jayr I don't seem to have that problem myself.
[15:35] Kii Lilliehook: maybe it's not the client but the network... things seem to load slow in the last days...
[15:35] JayR Cela: Atrus 27000 plus
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: yes, I've noticed significant slowdowns
[15:35] Benjamin Linden: at home in particular
[15:35] Kii Lilliehook: 27000 items? wow.
[15:35] Atrus Westland: Yeah, the inital load of your inventory JayR is prolly whats taking so long.
[15:36] Benjamin Linden: it should only be selectively loading though
[15:36] Benjamin Linden: unless a lot of stuff isn't in folders
[15:36] JayR Cela: once it is loaded / everything is kool
[15:36] Atrus Westland: A friend of mine has around 51k items and it took him a while for the inital load.
[15:36] Kii Lilliehook: it seem to start loading only when you try to access something - why does it not load in background?
[15:37] Atrus Westland: so I don't have that issue.
[15:37] Atrus Westland: Fortunetly I keep almost nothing.
[15:37] JayR Cela: i just keep getting time out messages
[15:37] Atrus Westland: Strange.
[15:37] JayR Cela: but i do like this Dazzle client
[15:38] Benjamin Linden: I'm really glad you like Dazzle, JayR
[15:38] Malbers Linden: hey Kooky.
[15:38] JayR Cela: took me a few days to get used to the new look
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: I'm hating 1.19.1.
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: Hi Malbers
[15:38] Benjamin Linden: what's up, Kooky?
[15:38] JayR Cela: but I love it
[15:38] Benjamin Linden: why is 1.19.1 giving you grief?
[15:38] Kooky Jetaime: ARe there any issues with the grid?
[15:39] Malbers Linden: having trouble going back to non-Dazzle?
[15:39] Malbers Linden: Kooky, everything seems to be rezzing slowly.
[15:39] JayR Cela: Mal / i just like this new look quite a bit
[15:39] Malbers Linden: Awesome.
[15:39] Kooky Jetaime: Never tried Dazzle honestly. I would be using Nicholaz Ed BE-v if it wasn't for the fact I had to buy a new video card, which, by pure chance not compatable with pre 1.19.x
[15:39] Kooky Jetaime: Malbers- - I get about 2 teleports then I have to restart
[15:40] Malbers Linden: Eeeek.
[15:40] Kooky Jetaime: 1) because I can no longer teleport (fails)
[15:40] JayR Cela: Kook are you using ATI or Nvidia ?
[15:40] Kooky Jetaime: 2) The client becomes disconnected from its connection status, cutting me off from some options in my Properties
[15:40] Kooky Jetaime: specifically the communications tab is going grey "Must be logged in to do this"
[15:40] Flight Band: All Go
[15:40] Kooky Jetaime: nVidia, 8800GT
[15:41] Kooky Jetaime: So I can't roll back the drivers.
[15:41] JayR Cela: try going to > tweacksrus.com
[15:41] JayR Cela: ooops
[15:41] JayR Cela: thats wrong
[15:41] Kii Lilliehook: yeah, that was a classical play-around-with-the-camera-crash!
[15:41] Kooky Jetaime: And now I'm getting this text chat entry every time I Tp
[15:41] Benjamin Linden: text chat entry?
[15:41] Jacek Antonelli: Hi all
[15:42] Kii Lilliehook: I like that entry.
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: Teleport completed from http://slurl.com/secondlife/Awesome%20Isle/57/177/73
[15:42] Malbers Linden: ah, there's Jacek.
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: Well, what I'd love ot know
[15:42] Kii Lilliehook: I just scripted a similar thing.
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: why doesn't it use the protocol entry instead
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: unless we're dropping the protocol?
[15:42] Kooky Jetaime: secondlife://Awesome Isle/57/177/53
[15:43] Kooky Jetaime: since its obvious if you are in the client, you don't need a slurl
[15:43] Kooky Jetaime: (Yes, I'm cranky, this is my 4th restart in under 30 mins)
[15:43] JayR Cela: Kooky try this tweak driver page for a better video driver > http://www.tweakforce.com/
[15:44] Kooky Jetaime: Oh, and I'm already up to a gig of memory this thing is hogging
[15:44] Benjamin Linden: hi Jacek!
[15:44] Atrus Westland: bah I can't find anything half-way related to this group image thing on jira
[15:44] Kooky Jetaime: How come I can run Nicholaz's version of SL for 6 hours, and not use over 500MB, but the LL version is passing a gigabyte in under 30 mins?
[15:44] Atrus Westland kicks jira in the nads again
[15:44] JayR Cela: well my own personal opinion is make Dazzle the defacto standard
[15:44] Benjamin Linden: which group image thing Atrus
[15:45] Benjamin Linden: sorry Kooky, I dont' have the answer to your protocol question
[15:45] Kooky Jetaime: Oh, and I run into freezing if i have voice enabled...
[15:46] Atrus Westland: Oh i've been having an issue with the group image for a group i'm in. The image is asigned just fine, you can even see it from the group profile window. However if you try and bring up the group page it doesn't like the image
[15:46] Kooky Jetaime: so bad if I'm flying at a good clip, I can end up in the next sim
[15:46] Kooky Jetaime: I have to say, this is definately not "RC" material..
[15:46] Malbers Linden: hi mystique
[15:47] Mystique Webb: greetings
[15:47] Kooky Jetaime: And I know ben, your UI, so 90% of this doesnt' cover you
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: well I hope you're filing lots of bugs, Kooky
[15:47] Atrus Westland: example http://world.secondlife.com/group/7f356718-0c96-893e-2409-866748f4390a a group page thats where the issue is ben.
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: that's why we do the RCs
[15:47] Benjamin Linden: so there's supposed to be an image there?
[15:47] JayR Cela: yeah the RC needs lots of work
[15:47] Atrus Westland: Yes
[15:48] Kooky Jetaime: Oh, and group chats are horrible, I am constantly getting "Error can't establish connection with XXX chat", after I've already recieved a message from said group.
[15:48] Atrus Westland: and if you try and change the image and wait for the update the next day there is no change
[15:48] JayR Cela: an Nicholaz aint gonna do it untill it goes gold / if at all
[15:48] Atrus Westland: if you pull info on the image from a web browser it shows up as 0 bytes
[15:48] Atrus Westland: Like the ll system is loadin an image file or something.
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: yes, I've been getting those error messages, Kooky
[15:49] Atrus Westland: its really bizzare, and I was kind of hopeing to find something on jira on the issue but I can't find anything and I know there has to be something in there about it.
[15:49] Atrus Westland: I never have been able to navigate jira very well though.
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: Atrus, you might want to create your own bug
[15:49] Benjamin Linden: it sounds like a problem with the search index
[15:49] Squirrel Wood: people tend to use many different keywords to describe one and the same issue... which makes it hard to find dupes on the jira
[15:50] Atrus Westland: What do you mean ben.
[15:50] JayR Cela: the SL Wikki is kool once you get used to it
[15:50] Kooky Jetaime: ok, I'm gonna leave before I vent more.. Have a good day all.
[15:50] JayR Cela: but it takes a while
[15:51] Jacek Antonelli: Take care and be well, Kooky
[15:51] Malbers Linden: thanks for the feedback Kooky
[15:51] Kooky Jetaime: and from a UI perspective, make the teleport history an option somewhere.
[15:51] Kooky Jetaime waves
[15:51] JayR Cela: Kooky stick around hun
[15:51] Kooky Jetaime looks at JayR?
[15:51] JayR Cela: lol / you are Kooky
[15:52] JayR Cela: hahaha
[15:52] Benjamin Linden: thanks for coming Kooky
[15:52] Benjamin Linden: we are working on teleport history!
[15:53] JayR Cela: oh Ben that should be fairly easy to inplement / TP history
[15:53] Kooky Jetaime: well, its effectively implimented
[15:53] Kooky Jetaime: just impliment a way to turn it off
[15:53] Squirrel Wood works on translating her resume...
[15:54] JayR Cela: I think OnRezz has a TP history attachment for sale
[15:54] Benjamin Linden: oh this is the thing in the chat history you mean, Kooky?
[15:54] Kooky Jetaime: Yea
[15:55] Kooky Jetaime: Theres already a "You just came from XXX"..
[15:55] Benjamin Linden: right
[15:55] Benjamin Linden: not a fan?
[15:55] Kooky Jetaime: No. Just more to clutter my log.
[15:55] Kooky Jetaime: And it seems like there could have been a much better way to impliment it.. I mean, a web link?
[15:56] Squirrel Wood: humm
[15:56] Squirrel Wood: how about stuffing that info into a dropdown box like the gestures ?
[15:57] Kooky Jetaime: Hrm. it seems like SL is now catching http://www.slurl.com entries
[15:57] Ace Albion: i think it's fine. if you click the text you get a neat box with teleport and show on map and information
[15:57] Squirrel Wood: and keep like the last n entries
[15:57] Benjamin Linden: it was seen as an easy short-term win
[15:57] Kooky Jetaime: its not passing them to the http: registered client.
[15:57] Benjamin Linden: but we are working on a more feature-rich tp history
[15:57] Kooky Jetaime: Or even SL's internal browser
[15:57] JayR Cela: the new web search is kool
[15:57] Jacek Antonelli: Yes, SL has been catching slurl links for a while now
[15:57] JayR Cela: keep up the work there
[15:57] Benjamin Linden: what do you mean caching slurl links?
[15:58] Kooky Jetaime: I mean the SL client is intercepting "http://www.slurl.com" and not passing it to the "http:" registered client.
[15:58] Kooky Jetaime: if I click on a http link, I expect a brower, not a teleport window.
[15:58] Benjamin Linden: ah
[15:59] JayR Cela: oh yeah / i noticed that earlier today
[15:59] Kooky Jetaime: SL is effectively ignoring the users preferenes.
[15:59] Benjamin Linden: but for slurls wouldn't you want it to go straight to the viewer anyway?
[15:59] Kooky Jetaime: w
[15:59] Ace Albion: Benjamin, I would suggest taking the http stuff out of the chat display for it. It's obviously too confusing for people
[15:59] JayR Cela: keep getting broken links
[15:59] Benjamin Linden: do you mean after you teleport?
[15:59] Kooky Jetaime: No, if I wanted to go to a viewer window, I'd like to see a "secondlife:" entry
[15:59] Benjamin Linden: or something else
[15:59] Ace Albion: Just have it give the region coords and still be a clicky link. then nobody has to have any traumas about protocols
[15:59] Kooky Jetaime: Thats what its there for
[16:00] Atrus Westland: Why secondlife?
[16:00] Atrus Westland: why not just call it SLP://
[16:00] JayR Cela: yep and copy and paste seems to be broken as well
[16:00] Jacek Antonelli: the secondlife:// protocol already exists
[16:00] Kooky Jetaime: you'd save a lot of coding hassle I'm guessing if SL just dumped "http:" to the appropriate place, instead of reading the url
[16:00] Kooky Jetaime: Jacek - Exactly, why isn't it used is my question.
[16:00] Atrus Westland: bah people should learn to shorten things!
[16:00] Atrus Westland: come on man jargon we need more jargon!
[16:00] Benjamin Linden: I'm sorry I'm not quite following this
[16:00] Kooky Jetaime: OK
[16:00] Atrus Westland laughs
[16:01] Ace Albion: Kooky is upset that the tp link shows "http" in it. it is causing all kinds of cold sweats
[16:01] Atrus Westland: Just throwing a bit of randomness out there ben.
[16:01] Kooky Jetaime: When you have a "protocol:" entry, the viewer that the user chooses to handle it should.
[16:01] Benjamin Linden: is the issue with the way we display the last location after you TP?
[16:01] Kooky Jetaime: http: for me is Firefox.
[16:01] Jacek Antonelli: Kooky: my guess would be that the SLURL links have several uses, and is more convenient
[16:01] Kooky Jetaime: Jacek - because Slurl isn't being used.
[16:01] Kooky Jetaime: Jacek - Not in this case they arn't.
[16:01] Benjamin Linden: ah yes, well there is an issue with the way we are using the new internal browser
[16:02] Kooky Jetaime: a Slurl should go to the browser.
[16:02] Jacek Antonelli: They are more convenient in that they work as a teleport link in SL, but you can also post them on your blog on IM a friend with them
[16:02] JayR Cela: if they work / half the time SLUR's are broken
[16:02] Benjamin Linden: I need to go over those settings and interactions Real Soon Now
[16:02] Kooky Jetaime: SL is intecepting them and not handling them properly.
[16:02] Benjamin Linden: so we can fix them in the RC
[16:02] Ace Albion: no jacek you need to follow the orthodoxy.
[16:02] Benjamin Linden: I don't think it's behaving correctly
[16:02] Kooky Jetaime: Ben - its not a matter of Internal or external browser, because that can be configured. Its a matter of SL is usurping a specific URL and assuming of how it should be handled.
[16:02] Squirrel Wood: if SL is not running, it goes to the browser. if SL is running it goes to the SL client and skips an unneccessary intermediate step.
[16:03] Jason Swain: Its better going straight to the client
[16:03] Jason Swain: when its running
[16:03] Atrus Westland: Cuz I have questions about this that I wanna bug someones about at some point.
[16:03] Benjamin Linden: ok well I'll let you guys take that up with the non-UI folks :-)
[16:03] Atrus Westland: Hey ben, outside of jira is there anyone that deals with the web conent for the SL groups?
[16:04] Benjamin Linden: do you mean in search?
[16:04] Kooky Jetaime: This is UI though.
[16:04] Benjamin Linden: Kooky, is this in Jira somewhere
[16:04] Mystique Webb: sorry
[16:04] Benjamin Linden: I don't think this is the right forum for trying to understand the problem
[16:04] Kooky Jetaime: And Squirrel - if I open a SLURL but want to go to SL and don't have my browser opened, that just added a step
[16:04] Mystique Webb: that's one thing I'd like to see improved - clearly reading that Talk is ON or OFF without the hover
[16:04] Atrus Westland: Very true Ben.
[16:05] Mystique Webb: I'm on a laptop so it's tough to make out except for when the audio radiates from my head
[16:05] JayR Cela: ok the RC has a new option for browser selection
[16:05] Atrus Westland: Some of these issues I think are better explained via other forums or methods
[16:05] Benjamin Linden: Kooky/Atrus, if you could open a Jira and write this up, that'd be great
[16:05] Benjamin Linden: we're out of time
[16:05] Benjamin Linden: for today
[16:05] Benjamin Linden: thanks for coming everyone!
[16:05] Atrus Westland: Peace out home slice
[16:05] Jacek Antonelli: Thanks for hosting, Ben and Malbers
[16:05] JayR Cela: byeee
[16:05] Jason Swain: Thanks Ben
[16:06] Malbers Linden: Bye All
