[11:07] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Heya Enkidu |
[11:07] | Enkidu Linden: | hey there |
[11:07] | Enkidu Linden: | how are you? |
[11:08] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | great, a bit chilly though, you? |
[11:08] | Enkidu Linden: | it's chilly here as well |
[11:09] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | getting some troops for your OH |
[11:09] | Enkidu Linden: | very kind! |
[11:09] | Enkidu Linden: | welcome jadyn |
[11:09] | Jadyn Firehawk: | hello enkidu, ty :) |
[11:09] | Jadyn Firehawk: | you are a cnidaria |
[11:10] | Enkidu Linden: | since viewer 2.3.0 beta was just released with display names, i thought i'd play with it |
[11:10] | Enkidu Linden: | i totally am |
[11:10] | Jadyn Firehawk: | :) |
[11:10] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | can't see them unfortunately, but with everyone being happy with 2.3 I really ought to try it out! |
[11:12] | Enkidu Linden: | i've been blissfully unaware of this stuff so i'm just trying to figure out how to get it to work |
[11:12] | Enkidu LindenEnkidu | Linden noob |
[11:12] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | hahaha |
[11:13] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | All I'm worried about is if I can get "Supercalifragilistic Epliralidocious" as user name |
[11:13] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Life will ne sweet and simple :) |
[11:13] | Enkidu Linden: | i don't see why not! |
[11:13] | Jadyn Firehawk: | lol |
[11:13] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | heya Morg :) |
[11:13] | Enkidu Linden: | hey morgaine |
[11:14] | Jadyn Firehawk: | hi morgaine |
[11:14] | Morgaine Dinova: | Hiya peeps, how are you all? |
[11:14] | Enkidu Linden: | we are cold! |
[11:14] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | quite relaxed here, you? |
[11:14] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | and cold, yes! |
[11:14] | Morgaine Dinova: | I got distracted in another virtual world. Had to kill some monsters ;-) |
[11:15] | Enkidu Linden: | i'm just trying to figure out display names in 2.3.0 |
[11:15] | Morgaine Dinova: | Bit like SL really :P |
[11:15] | Enkidu Linden: | 'cept the monsters are purtier |
[11:15] | Morgaine Dinova: | Hehe |
[11:15] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Can we still change it once every 24 hours? |
[11:16] | Enkidu Linden: | only allowed to change once every seven days, but you can Reset it at any time (which makes it appear as your "classic" Second Life first name and last name) |
[11:16] | Enkidu Linden: | from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Display_names |
[11:16] | Enkidu Linden: | which i just found |
[11:17] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Oh now that's a nifty little detail |
[11:17] | Morgaine Dinova: | I hope you don't mean "reset to classic", but "reset to default" instead. The "classic" will be unusable for new residents, ie. John12345 resident. |
[11:18] | Morgaine Dinova: | Resident* |
[11:18] | Morgaine Dinova: | If you can't set a default, there will be trouble. |
[11:19] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | I thought scripts were supposed to work with the default name? |
[11:19] | Morgaine Dinova: | Old scripts only |
[11:19] | Morgaine Dinova: | That's just for backwards compatibility, so that old scripts don't break. It's a poor bandaid though. Good scripts should work with username |
[11:20] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | hmmm so better spike up on scripting if I want them to work for newbies too |
[11:20] | Enkidu Linden: | oh bummer |
[11:20] | Enkidu Linden: | it's not enabled for this region, i guess |
[11:21] | Morgaine Dinova: | Ah |
[11:21] | Enkidu Linden: | baby steps! |
[11:22] | Enkidu Linden: | so i was hoping to work through this |
[11:22] | Morgaine Dinova: | It's an 8-year old baby, steps ought to be a bit bigger now :-) |
[11:22] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | ah yes this is LeTigre, display names is for Magnum if I remember correctly |
[11:22] | Enkidu Linden: | haha |
[11:22] | Jadyn Firehawk: | what if any are the new building features of 2.3? |
[11:22] | Enkidu Linden: | i think we just got burned |
[11:23] | Enkidu Linden: | i don't see anything in the blog about building upgrades |
[11:23] | Morgaine Dinova: | This latest version of Imprudence has Qarl's new alignment tool built in. It's pretty nifty!! |
[11:24] | Jadyn Firehawk: | oh that is an awesome feature |
[11:24] | Morgaine Dinova: | Enki: are you disallowed from using TPVs inside the Lab? |
[11:25] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | ugh, so many people who'd see that as "this TPV is officially ok", Morg |
[11:25] | Enkidu Linden: | not disallowed but the security implications make it undesireable for me |
[11:25] | Morgaine Dinova: | Yep, it has security implications. Job security :P |
[11:26] | Jadyn Firehawk: | lol |
[11:26] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | security implications Enkidu? |
[11:27] | Enkidu Linden: | sure |
[11:27] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | I can live with a teenage prankster (Emerald), but I'm not sure if there's more to be concerned about? |
[11:29] | Enkidu Linden: | hmm |
[11:29] | Morgaine Dinova: | Imprudence is a highly respected team, always has been, and nobody has ever suggested otherwise. So I think we can leave out any innuendos otherwise. But that aside, progress of the Linden viewer is hampered when Linden developers and Linden users are discouraged from seeing the benefits of "the competition". |
[11:30] | Enkidu Linden: | yes, i mean not to imply anything about tpvs |
[11:30] | Enkidu Linden: | that's an excellent point |
[11:30] | Morgaine Dinova: | It would just be good for you all, I think. |
[11:30] | Enkidu Linden: | i agree with that |
[11:30] | Enkidu Linden: | i'm not a viewer engineer though |
[11:30] | Morgaine Dinova: | I've never understood sel-imposed shackles, lol |
[11:31] | Morgaine Dinova: | self* |
[11:31] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Imprudence just doesn't work for me, unfortunately |
[11:31] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | For some reason textures and sculpts don't load |
[11:31] | Enkidu Linden: | i don't recall hearing anyone say not to every under any circumstances use a tpv |
[11:31] | Morgaine Dinova: | Did you enable HTTP Textures? It's so much better with them on. |
[11:32] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Also my question was more in a broader sense |
[11:32] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | yeah I did Morg |
[11:32] | Morgaine Dinova: | kk |
[11:32] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | tried both |
[11:33] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | right Enkidu, they can add a lot of fun to SL |
[11:33] | Enkidu Linden: | i can't imagine why they wouldn't! |
[11:33] | Morgaine Dinova: | So how's the new auth team Enki? Having fun? |
[11:34] | Enkidu Linden: | we started our first sprint |
[11:34] | Enkidu Linden: | so far, so good |
[11:34] | Morgaine Dinova: | Woohoo! |
[11:34] | Morgaine Dinova: | Anything you can talk about? |
[11:34] | Enkidu Linden: | we're practicing scrum, which, if you've ever practiced scrum, means the first few iterations are often pretty rocky |
[11:35] | Enkidu Linden: | sure! |
[11:35] | Enkidu Linden: | let's see |
[11:35] | Morgaine Dinova: | Well I'm old school (lectured on Software Engineering), so I consider them all rocky. :P But YMMV :-) |
[11:36] | Enkidu Linden: | the viewer help system had a bug that was preventing content from updating in the viewer |
[11:36] | Enkidu Linden: | i fixed that and it was deployed yesterday |
[11:36] | Morgaine Dinova: | Web help? |
[11:37] | Enkidu Linden: | pretty mundane, but having that system operate nominally means we're closer to allowing residents to edit help content (my dream, not something the lab has decided on) |
[11:37] | Morgaine Dinova: | Oh! |
[11:37] | Morgaine Dinova: | You mean like wiki? |
[11:38] | Enkidu Linden: | it's on the web, but it's loaded in viewer 2 windows |
[11:38] | Enkidu Linden: | yes |
[11:38] | Enkidu Linden: | all the content is on the wiki now |
[11:38] | Morgaine Dinova: | Very interesting. I like that |
[11:39] | Enkidu Linden: | i think democratizing that would be remarkably useful and help quality would improve |
[11:39] | Morgaine Dinova: | What's a typical wiki page that gets loaded as viewer Help? |
[11:39] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Sounds like it'd help a lot of builder classes |
[11:39] | Enkidu Linden: | http://viewer-help.secondlife.com/en/Second+Life+Beta+Viewer/2.3.0/nearby_chat |
[11:40] | Enkidu Linden: | i'm in viewer 2.3.0 beta so i would see that load if i clicked the ? at the top of the chat window |
[11:40] | Morgaine Dinova: | Heh, not sure about calling it "democratizing", but yeah, I agree. It's part of harnessing people power. |
[11:41] | Enkidu Linden: | i mean it only in the strictest sense: people empowering |
[11:41] | Morgaine DinovaMorgaine | Dinova grins |
[11:42] | Morgaine Dinova: | So taking that page as an example, where would a person go on the wiki to improve it? |
[11:42] | Enkidu Linden: | let's see.. |
[11:43] | Enkidu Linden: | i think that one came from: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewerhelp:Nearby_Chat |
[11:44] | Morgaine Dinova: | That's pretty cool |
[11:45] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | <-has never tried to add anything to a wiki page |
[11:45] | Morgaine Dinova: | "You do not have permission to edit pages in the Viewerhelp namespace." |
[11:45] | Enkidu Linden: | gotcha! |
[11:45] | Morgaine Dinova: | So how do people help improve it if it's locked? |
[11:46] | Enkidu Linden: | indeed, that's what i hope to change someday |
[11:46] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | on the same page Morg |
[11:46] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | suppose we could pull it off to have some decent building tutorials set up |
[11:47] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Ready to be reviewed and approved - would that help your case Enkidu? |
[11:47] | Morgaine Dinova: | What's on the same page Mel? The page is locked, as the Edit (locked) icon shows. If you click the Edit, you get a read-only edit window. |
[11:47] | Enkidu Linden: | yeah |
[11:48] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | right, meaning I can offer some info but not add it, being a semi-decent builder, Morg |
[11:48] | Morgaine Dinova: | Obviously it would need controls, but wiki is pretty good for that. |
[11:49] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | thinking about, for instance Builders Brewery classes on building, NCI classes and so on |
[11:49] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | quite a few people there who have a lot to share with the community |
[11:50] | Enkidu Linden: | i think so too |
[11:50] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | If we could get those to put out a rough draft with interesting tips, tricks and techniques |
[11:51] | Morgaine Dinova: | The actual Help pages don't come from the wiki directly, but are generated by a Linden process. So it's pretty safe to allow public write access to the wiki source pages, since a Linden would scan the differences before clicking the Help Regenerate process for that page. |
[11:51] | Morgaine Dinova: | And wiki is great for showing differences. |
[11:54] | Enkidu Linden: | i would guess there will be some complication around localization |
[11:54] | Enkidu Linden: | i don't think that should be a blocker, personally |
[11:54] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | localization? |
[11:54] | Enkidu Linden: | translation into all our supported languages |
[11:54] | Morgaine Dinova: | Aye, that's harder |
[11:54] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | hmmm |
[11:56] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Well if it's translated well, and demonstrably benefits LL as a company it shouldn't be that hard to come up with some sort of a reward |
[11:57] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | If only I could find that article about how someone uses SL to cut down on translation costs by 90% ... |
[11:57] | Enkidu Linden: | wow, that's amazing |
[11:57] | Enkidu Linden: | i would love to read that |
[11:58] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | His original blog is gone |
[11:58] | Enkidu Linden: | i am in love with facebook's interface for localization |
[11:58] | Jadyn Firehawk: | http://maxkle.in/how-i-reduced-translation-costs-of-200-articl/ this maybe? |
[11:59] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | He reduced his translation costs from 9000 USD to 45 USD, paying people with virtual goods |
[11:59] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | that's the one |
[11:59] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | I have another one along the same lines |
[12:00] | Enkidu Linden: | fascinating.. |
[12:00] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Where someone developed a game for a certain task, and it's so much fun professionals do their day job after hours, by playing the game |
[12:01] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | http://www.slideshare.net/dings/just-add-points-what-ux-can-and-cannot-learn-from-games |
[12:02] | Enkidu Linden: | thanks. i will read this during lunch |
[12:02] | Enkidu Linden: | i think it's really interesting the way zynga has profited from social gaming |
[12:02] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | enjoy your lunch Enkidu :) |
[12:02] | Enkidu Linden: | along a similar vein |
[12:03] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Zynga has been very aggressive though |
[12:03] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | Without many people noticing it |
[12:04] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | I wonder if they'll stay afloat - if they don't get their virtual currency patent, that is |
[12:05] | Enkidu Linden: | i will be appalled if they do |
[12:05] | Enkidu Linden: | not that i need another reason to be appalled with our patent system |
[12:05] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | heh |
[12:06] | Enkidu Linden: | well, i should probably mosely to foodville |
[12:06] | Enkidu Linden: | or mosey |
[12:06] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | They still need to show they were the first to implement it though, right? |
[12:06] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | ok :) |
[12:06] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | see you next week hopefully :) |
[12:06] | Enkidu Linden: | so cold here. can hardly type |
[12:06] | Enkidu Linden: | yes, thanks so much for coming |
[12:06] | Jadyn Firehawk: | nice to meet you :) |
[12:07] | Enkidu Linden: | maybe next week you can watch me struggle further with display names |
[12:07] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | hahaha |
[12:07] | Enkidu Linden: | nice to meet you, jadyn |
[12:07] | Enkidu Linden: | thanks folks! |
[12:07] | Enkidu Linden: | see you next week! |
[12:07] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | I'll see if I can find some security freaks, I know at least one |
[12:07] | Melchizedek Blauvelt: | bye Enkidu :) |
