Torley Linden: OMG I've returned!
Torley Linden: Hello everyone!
JetZep Zabelin: Hi!
Jaymes Kjeller: Hey Torley! :)
Kenan Keen: Ouch
Torley Linden: So good to see you all!
Cindy Lineker: Hi Torley:))
Torley Linden: What is new exciting memorable good and on your mind!? ^_^
Anelise Demonge: Its.. its.. its Torley! *grins* HIya
JetZep Zabelin: can't remember =P
Ruud Lathrop thinks we have a pink philip rosendale here
JetZep Zabelin: there was SO much
Torley Linden: hahahaha.
Torley Linden: yes, my appearance today, verily, it is not a coincidence.
Torley Linden: i can't believe i didn't do this sooner.
Ruud Lathrop: Wanna take over Linden Lab?
Ruud Lathrop: **evilgiggles**
Torley Linden: oh, not just yet. ;) hehe
JetZep Zabelin: hehe
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Stephen Posaner fells left out
Anelise Demonge accepted your inventory offer.
Stephen Posaner: torley is still rezing
Cindy Lineker: mmmmm watermelon
Torley Linden: am i rezzed yet?
JetZep Zabelin: hehe ya
Cindy Lineker: yeap for me you are
Jaymes Kjeller: Yeah
Stephen Posaner: no i dont think my comp likes the rc it has been mor laggy to day than usual
Stephen Posaner: thier it went
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Torley Linden: Stephen, hmmm i know i've heard various performance-related bugs, you've also tried changing graphics settings?
Stephen Posaner: first thing i did
Stephen Posaner: I think I may have to use minimal graphios
Fresse Alter: friendly greetings :o) Hi Torley... finally I meet you :o)
Stephen Posaner: but that just ruinds some of my experiance
Torley Linden: heya Fresse, friendly greetings to you too! =) glad you could come!
Stephen Posaner: btw did u get to look at the shirt i gave u
Torley Linden: yes Stephen that's a lot of fun, i saw you wear it at Bridie's triage too
bigjr Slade: moin moin from Hamburg /Germany
Stephen Posaner: did u read the back
Torley Linden: oh no i haven't yet... ;)
Squirrel Wood: I use the same graphics settings I have always been using and the performance slowly keeps going down.. from 20 to 12-15 fps in the past couple months..
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Stephen Posaner: both my regular and rc have been lagging the last week or so
Torley Linden: sucks to hear that... but is that from 1.19.0 to 1.20, Squirrel? e.g., is that from pre-WindLight to after all those changes were made?
Stephen Posaner: I just have not thought much ov it it has been tolerable
Imnotgoing Sideways: I've been loving the RC since .4 came out. (^_^)
Squirrel Wood: I'm always on the RC clients :p
Imnotgoing Sideways: I had a silly flicker before that. (>_<)
Squirrel Wood: don't use anything else
Raynold Burt: hi all :-)
Imnotgoing Sideways: Konnichiwa <Hi> (^_^)
Squirrel Wood: unless there's nothing to test
Cindy Lineker: lol
Torley Linden: hihi!
Squirrel Wood: the rc client is plenty stable for me though it does not like much camera movement while rezzing in a busy place... in which case it just goes oops and crashes.
Imnotgoing Sideways: I've been lucky... Most of my crashes have been in uber-busy places. (^_^)
Bau Ur: I tun off environmental shaders and avatar impostering (which should be called avatar preposterousness, it never works right) and I'm fine.
Torley Linden: Imnotgoing, that's a great way to do emoticons.
Torley Linden: i haven't seen that kinda style before.
Imnotgoing Sideways: I notice walking is funny in some welcome areas... I don't know if I should blame the server or the client. (>_<)
Torley Linden: with the brackets and all.
Raynold Burt: nice music-stream..... did you play this on your piano, Torley? :-)
JetZep Zabelin: i crash less than before, but usually its from panning the cam while rezzing
Imnotgoing Sideways: Ah... They're a reflex. (^_^)y
Torley Linden: yes Raynold, sure did.
Raynold Burt: wow!
Raynold Burt: impressive
Imnotgoing Sideways giggles.
Ruud Lathrop: How is linden gonna support other skins for the new client?
Torley Linden: i have played a lot of piano, sometimes to soothe me!
Imnotgoing Sideways: LULZ. I play drums to annoy my neighbors. (^_^)
Squirrel Wood: Dazzle is a first step towards a skinnable interface
Raynold Burt: I wish I could play piano, guitar or so
A group member named Jeska Linden gave you metaPRESENTER box.
Torley Linden: Ruud: past Dazzle, i'm not exactly sure yet but we do want to make it easy to choose from in the UI... currently know some Residents have done their own patches.
Squirrel Wood: Afaik there is still a LOT of work left in that area
Ruud Lathrop: Yes using the black patch on RC :)
Imnotgoing Sideways: I like the Retro Dazzle plugin that guy posed on the forum. (^_^)
Ruud Lathrop: Sorry to say but I ike it better
Imnotgoing Sideways: Be one with the darknezz (=_=)
Torley Linden: well Ruud, there's no need to be sorry, i understand that with customizability, people have a lot of room for personal preference... =)
Torley Linden: the key thing is to have a good "default" and then let more savvy people change/choose between what they want
Squirrel Wood: black buttons on black screen with dark black text on light black backgrounds... yes. gotta love it ^^
Imnotgoing Sideways: Will it ever be adjustable by using sliders, like Windows Media Player was for a while? (o.o)
Imnotgoing Sideways: That would be killer. (^_^)
JetZep Zabelin: Torley, nice sculpty shoes.. werent u wearing those on your head before? XD
Stephen Posaner: one thing i would like to see would be a logout button that did not kill the client
Bau Ur: HEHEHEHEH
Ruud Lathrop: lol while never work for SL viewer
Squirrel Wood points to PJira... put in a feature request and you may get it ^^
Bau Ur: PJira! What a morass.
Bau Ur: Hey Torley, what is the most fun thing you have seen in SL lately?
JetZep Zabelin: yeah a disconnect option would be nice instead of having to fully quit the client
Stephen Posaner: where do i put that in at
Torley Linden: hahahaha
Bau Ur: And may I give you a notecard with landmarks to an art show?
Torley Linden: please do, Bau!
Torley Linden: JetZep, yes, certainly. now i wear them "properly".
Bau Ur gave you All the RADIANCE shows at AngelGate.
Torley Linden: and btw the "disconnect option" is apparently a LOT harder to do than it seems at first glance.
Imnotgoing Sideways: Good job!!! XD
Bau Ur: There are some giant spheres with one of your textures on them.
Torley Linden: several engineers took a close look at that, and it's surprisingly not trivial.
JetZep Zabelin: that makes sense
Torley Linden: oooh kewl Bau, thanx for sharing.
JetZep Zabelin: I was thinking of what SL would be like in 2012
Imnotgoing Sideways: Thinking about how many people say they have to clear cache every time they relog... I'm sure that feature might not have a big fan base. (>_<)
Torley Linden: some things would be very similar i think, and other things would be very different.
Torley Linden: Imnotgoing: but why are they clearing cache? what's the root problem?
Imnotgoing Sideways: I have no idea... I usually don't. (^_^)
Imnotgoing Sideways: Mostly it's to fight grayonaise avatars, I guess. (^_^)
Gellan Glenelg: I think "clear cache" is used when people just don't know what the problem is... like "have you tried rebooting your pc?" I haven't needed to clear cache in the last several months
Torley Linden: "grayonaise", that's the first time i've heard that.
Imnotgoing Sideways: Totally. (^_^)
Imnotgoing Sideways giggles.
Bau Ur: hehehehh great term!
Ruud Lathrop: Another word for the dictonairy
Torley Linden: my gosh Fresse, you're like, spongebob squarepants!
Stephen Posaner: i like that term
Torley Linden: portmanteaus are awesome
Bau Ur: :)
Fresse Alter: does anybody know, why clearing the cache takes so much time?
Ruud Lathrop: Its about 500 mb :)
Squirrel Wood: because there are usually several thousand files in it
Imnotgoing Sideways: I'm guessing it's a major file delete. (^_^)
Torley Linden: and loading your inventory after a clear cache can take a long time too.
Torley Linden: especially if you have 10,000s of items. :|
Imnotgoing Sideways: Maybe your inventory... I'm still under 7K. (^_^)
Torley Linden: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, I HOPE YOU DON'T!
Torley Linden: hahahaha
Torley Linden: i stay under 7,500 myself.
JetZep Zabelin: i only clear cache if nothing is working
Squirrel Wood: spongepants squarebob?
Fresse Alter: hmm...... deleting several thousands of files with explorer doesnt take so long.... but its just felt this way maybe ^^
Imnotgoing Sideways: Good job!!! XD
Ruud Lathrop: lol
Torley Linden: i personally haven't had a need to clear cache in a very long time, but i wonder if it's still needed as a workaround for perceived (not actual) inventory loss.
Imnotgoing Sideways: That's the advice handed out sometimes. (^_^)
Imnotgoing Sideways: I think the wiki even says so. (^_^)
JetZep Zabelin: sometimes I couldnt get proper fetching until i cleared cache
Ruud Lathrop: A better advice is to login on another sim when you have inventory problems
Bau Ur: INteresting!
Bau Ur: To a sim with a better server?
JetZep Zabelin: yes, cross to another sim first before trying to clear cache
Imnotgoing Sideways: I did that back when every login to home made me ruthered... I used Akiba because it was easly to spell and lag free..... And loaded with Anime stuff. (^_^)y
Ruud Lathrop: No just it sometimes lloks like the sim is also cahcing somthing
Bau Ur: :) Easy to spell hahahah
Imnotgoing Sideways giggles.
JetZep Zabelin: I explored a bunch of ocean sims just to deal with inventory problems.. it worked =D
Imnotgoing Sideways: Nice. (o.o)
Torley Linden: it's good to do some detective work and narrow down what might be possibly causing some probs
JetZep Zabelin: except that one sim with the big oil rig.. its laggy there
JetZep Zabelin: well i mean laggy to rez at first
JetZep Zabelin: Some ocean sims let you rez, some dont, some also dont allow scripts.. good for evading ppl stalking you with those scripts
Torley Linden: i use some openspace Linden regions to test various things
Torley Linden: if you're being harassed/stalked tho, that sounds like it violates the Community Standards and shouldn't be happening.
Imnotgoing Sideways: Oop. (^_^)
Stephen Posaner: I have to go I may be back sl land issue
Torley Linden: ok, best of hope!
JetZep Zabelin: i dont really get harassed/stalked, but ive had to help a couple ppl who were
JetZep Zabelin: its a micro sim
Squirrel Wood: heh
Torley Linden: whoa Squirrel this is cool
bigjr Slade: is this a RC error ? > http://bigjr.de/tree.jpg the trees are not full rez
Torley Linden: floating here...
Squirrel Wood: sculpt texture + heightmap texture... makes for a nice display
JetZep Zabelin: i see the rabbit outline
Torley Linden: bigjr, in addition to Tree Detail slider, there's an Advanced Debug Setting to make trees more detailed at far distances...
Torley Linden: they're pretty taxing though. :(
Torley Linden: but that doesn't look like a clear bug, bigjr... just that Linden trees are kinda crappy that way.
Imnotgoing Sideways: Oh.. What's the setting?... I'm sure my machine can handle it and I like taking big snapshots. (^_^)
Squirrel Wood: rendertreeLODFactor
Imnotgoing Sideways: WIN!!\(^_^)/
Torley Linden: thanks Squirrel!
Imnotgoing Sideways: Arigatou <Thank You> (^_^)
JetZep Zabelin: oh i remember some other Lindens mentioned a new tree system
Squirrel Wood: 1.0 for daily SL, 4.0 for screenshots with high detail trees
Torley Linden: DUN DUN DUN... http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Debug_Settings for more.
Bau Ur: :)
Imnotgoing Sideways: Killer! \(^_^)/
Bau Ur: oh, new trees!! Yes, Please!
Bau Ur: Torley, several times I have sent people to your office to see your terrific videos (YAY Torley Textures!) and they have gotten kinda confused by the default parcel entry point up over the roof. Could you perhaps allow a landmark over at your videos? I seem unable to place one there.
JetZep Zabelin: I think i heard about it at the open source meetings
Torley Linden: Bau, hmmm that may be a good idea since i emphasize videos more than textures now.
Squirrel Wood: Mmmm. Open Sauce.
Torley Linden: yes, i'll change it soon, and let's see what happens...
Bau Ur: Thanks.
Torley Linden: thanks Bau for the heads-up! i appreciate it...
Imnotgoing Sideways: Heh.... I'm pushing my luck staying online here.... Thanks for the links, I'm totally playing with that stuff when I get home. (^_^)y
Imnotgoing Sideways says Bai Baii!!! (^_^)y
Bau Ur: :)
Squirrel Wood: Torley, you remember my terraformer?
Torley Linden: yes Squirrel!
Torley Linden: there's so much stuff to play with!
Squirrel Wood: I now have a version done that is worth being called release candidate :)
Torley Linden: oooh
Torley Linden: good to hear it
Squirrel Wood: ^^
Torley Linden: Squirrel do you have beta testers and stuff, people helping you iterate it?
Squirrel Wood: not at the moment
Bau Ur: oh good question
Bau Ur: Is there some central group where people Beta test each other's stuff?
Bau Ur: That woud be a say cool group.
Bau Ur: way cool
Squirrel Wood: Though I know that on a void sim about a third of the elements will collide with sheep snacks
Torley Linden: distributed help can really make a difference, i'm exceedingly appreciative of that when i find myself short of time
Torley Linden: sheep snacks?
Squirrel Wood: stack-heap-collision :p
Bau Ur: do you mean stack heaps? :)
Torley Linden: oh haha
Bau Ur: heeh
Gellan Glenelg: so it's just like RC... has memory leaks? ;PP
JetZep Zabelin: hehee
Squirrel Wood: nah. but the sim seems to not be able to handle the number of active scripts
Gellan Glenelg: ahh
Squirrel Wood: it works fine on a full sim though.
Ruud Lathrop: Did you try the beta grid with mono
Gellan Glenelg: can you have a "fewer scripts/slower" option?
Squirrel Wood: mono rocks ^^
Squirrel Wood: I was already using the "fewer scripts" version
Gellan Glenelg: ahhh
Torley Linden: i need to learn more about mono soon... i haven't done much with it... but let me ask you this, what are some good scripts to compare Mono vs. the current way? i've seen Conway's Game of Life and that maze thing.
JetZep Zabelin: I heard mono speeds up scripts SIGNIFICANTLY
Squirrel Wood: anything that needs lots of math calculations will be waaaaaay faster
Gellan Glenelg: oh it does, jet
Ruud Lathrop: Script with a lot of linked message
Torley Linden: i'd like to get a collection of objects to compare side by side... for both entertainment and educative purposes.
Squirrel Wood: though atm lots of tight loops like while (1) {}; will slow down mono considerably
JetZep Zabelin: hehe it just means ppl will push the envelope to a new limits
JetZep Zabelin: lol
Torley Linden: Mono, kinda like Havok 4, was a fabled thing for a number of years...
Torley Linden: so i am very very happy to see it being enjoyed publicly now
Torley Linden: i mean Mono in SL specifically
Squirrel Wood: Torley, my terraformer... basic fractal terrain generation on LSL... about 30s. on Mono... instantaneous
Ruud Lathrop: Mono with C# that will rock :)
JetZep Zabelin: havok is great, i notice the difference especially when walking on sculpties
Torley Linden: :D
Raynold Burt: not only this
Torley Linden: JetZep: and what difference specifically?
bigjr Slade: your chair here is open sourse ?
Raynold Burt: my bowling-game works now ^^
Torley Linden: bigjr, no, it's by Timeless Prototype tho and he likes hearing from people who like his stuff, i modded that chair to be watermelon-colored
Bau Ur: :)
Squirrel Wood: eeeep.... Audiosurf scoreboard alert - Dethroned! You used to have the worldwide best score for: colours of the rainbow by tune up! vs. italobrothers Now the Audiosurf player 'Reverie' has beaten you. Get back in the game and reclaim the top spot!
JetZep Zabelin: well maybe they werent sculpties, but before I would sink into edges of certain prims, now the physics is more accurate than before
bigjr Slade: ok thanks :-) im goning now home :-) bye @ll
Torley Linden: okay bigjr, have a good one!
Raynold Burt: gtg.... I really enjoyed :-) Torley: cya on flickr ;-)
Torley Linden: JetZep: i know when sculpties were first introduced, it was confusing that their visual appearance didn't match their actual collision boundaries
Torley Linden: thanks Raynold, have a good one!
Bau Ur: Torley, I ahve been interested in the recent....well 6 weeks ago or two months? ....creation of a LL labs slogan about using SL to make RL better.
Jaymes Kjeller might look at Mono at some point
Torley Linden: ohh Bau, tell me more about this... ?
Bau Ur: Whose ida is that, and.....I want to say, do they really mean it?
JetZep Zabelin: yep, I'll have to try rezzin those sculpted stairs and walking on them again but I think their ok now
Bau Ur: But I guess I'll ask, how is it meant?
Torley Linden: Bau: which slogan are you referring to?
Bau Ur: Slogan, mision statement, whatever...can't find blog now...
Squirrel Wood: mono and LSL... the code is the same, the compiler is different. And that makes for all the difference!
JetZep Zabelin: something about "improving the human condition"
Bau Ur: yeah right!
Torley Linden: i'd have to see the specific one in order to understand about that, Bau... if it's that one JetZep referred to, oh, i know...
Squirrel Wood gave you Undiscovered.
Bau Ur: Jeez, genuinely a Mission, you know? I thought it was so cool!
Gellan Glenelg: "It's our mission to connect us all to an online world that advances the human condition."
Torley Linden: from http://lindenlab.com/about aye
Torley Linden: thanks!
Torley Linden: yes, we mean that... i helped give feedback on how to make it shorter :)
Torley Linden: at the time we were discussing it months ago
Fresse Alter: cu later mates... have to leave now. was very nice to be here
Bau Ur: maybe it was just mission of the month, not a general one? Temporary.....liek the belated Google motto, "Don't be evil.,"
Torley Linden: havea good one Fressebob Squarepants ;)
Fresse Alter: ^^
Torley Linden: Bau, it's an ongoing one, still applicable, not "just of the month"
JetZep Zabelin: i like that mission
Torley Linden: i like how simple it is.
Bau Ur: Can you explain more how it was meant?
Gellan Glenelg: but will SL *ever* completely cure RL?
Torley Linden: lol Gellan
Bau Ur: heheheh
Bau Ur: no, just puts it into remission
JetZep Zabelin: lol, theres never any cure.. only patches!!! o.O j/k!!
Torley Linden: Bau: well, one of the meanings is certainly that, Second Life empowers people who might be too shy, or ill in their First Life... to make positive contributions at large, whether it's groups, societies, and beyond...
Squirrel Wood: SL... Where you can grow PRIMS out of your body!
Squirrel Wood: BLING that prim!
Torley Linden: as Second Life is used for humanitarian purposes like charities, and helping folks conquer their fears, and people who meet on here, become friends, and do great things together :)
Torley Linden: lol Squirrel, that sounds like the name of some odd gameshow, "BLING THAT PRIM" @_@
Squirrel Wood: heh
JetZep Zabelin: lol
Torley Linden: and as technology gets faster and cheaper, Second Life becomes more accessible
Squirrel Wood: "How many bling scripts can YOU stuff into this object here?"
Torley Linden: and then Second Life becomes more widely distributed and hopefully easier to use, making it more useful to more people.
Ellla McMahon: Bau, have you seen the SL Globe Theatre and the current Hamlet performance ? I think this an enormous potential in lots of ways ... some of them contradictory .. you can be a live actor, without being embarassed - its yoru avi, but also you can experience directly what it is like to play the role
JetZep Zabelin: i saw someone with about 6000 avatar rendering cost.. half of it was bling XD
Torley Linden: hahah JetZep, i artificially added prims to myself and got an ARC of 408,000!
Gellan Glenelg: wow
Torley Linden: that wasn't even the highest i could go... but my viewer became very slow
JetZep Zabelin: omg!
Bau Ur: Yes, it's cool Ella :)
Torley Linden: Ellla, so true, for people who want to show off, Second Life offers new creative potentials...
Ellla McMahon: and then what about immersion role play for historical times ... medieval .. SL can even supply the muddy streets (lag LOl)
JetZep Zabelin: i was pleased to find out this av is less than 1000
Squirrel Wood: 408,000.... how many sims did you need to stay ingame?
Jaymes Kjeller: Avatar Rendering Cost?
Torley Linden: hahaha yea, there are a lot of historical grounds in SL... and fantasy ones... a lot of variations, it just takes one or a few people to craft their vision
JetZep Zabelin: with my wings its still only about 1100
Torley Linden: Squirrel: hahaha i was making Sandbox Cordova's denizens very sad and didn't want to be so cruel for a prolonged amount of time! so i took 'em off...
Squirrel Wood: hehe
Torley Linden: i basically went with Runitai's points guide, of how expensive each type of prim is...
Torley Linden: therefore, i had flexiprims that were shiny + bumpmapped + glow + animated textures + particle emitter
JetZep Zabelin: right now you're in the green (450)
Torley Linden: and stacked them all together for some horrible effects!
Torley Linden: linked big batches of 255 together, and then attached them to my appendages
Squirrel Wood: avatar for sale! Guaranteed 400,000+ ARC! Have you lagged a sim today?
Bau Ur: HAHAHAHAH
Gellan Glenelg: Jaymes: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/01/who-me-yes-you-couldnt-be-then-who-introducing-avatar-rendering-cost/
Torley Linden: thanks Gellan, i liked how funny the title of that post is...
Torley Linden: first time i've seen a COOKIE JAR POST on the Official Second Life Blog
Torley Linden: but leave it to Pastrami to have a good sense of humor about things
JetZep Zabelin: Squirrel.. about that picture.. it seems like those boots ppl wear and their belts are somehow costing a lot
JetZep Zabelin: in addition to all the rest (bling, etc)
Bau Ur: Yes, but you know, I think it will be very useful for avatar designers and sellers to be able to describe the server-resource cost of their creations. It would make dress codes for events easier too.
Squirrel Wood: Indeed
Squirrel Wood: ARC is the client side rendering cost methinks..
Torley Linden: there are some very intricated sculpted boots + belts, and those necklaces with each chainlink being a prim of its own (!).
Gellan Glenelg: and they often listen on channel 0 *grr*
Torley Linden: yes, ARC is more applicable towards viewer-side problems, since if you hide all the prims, then suddenly your viewer will speed up again.
Squirrel Wood: so if LL could have the client tell us its "maximum" render capacity then people could put it in relation
Torley Linden: Advanced > Rendering > Types > Volume
JetZep Zabelin: people aren't using optimum textures 1024x applied to a tiny prim and sometimes not the same textue repeated
Bau Ur: I threw a party recently in a visually rich environment with lots of scripts running in the sim, and asked people to wear kinda sleek outfits to help with lag management...soem people were actually offended. I think this new tool will haelp people realize how their outfits affect our shared resources.
Torley Linden: i'm hoping that'll come next, JetZep, better measuring texture resources that way
Bau Ur: YAY!!
Torley Linden: Bau, yes, it's true. it's so important to educate well.
Squirrel Wood: hmm.. how about a client side setting to adjust the maximum texture sizes allowed to be rendered on prims based on the size of the individual face?
Torley Linden: a lot of this really comes down to education...
Torley Linden: Squirrel: well, for someone who knows what they're doing, that might limit some legit uses, e.g., times where there's a small prim that needs to be zoomed in on as part of a gameplay HUD...
JetZep Zabelin: designers who dont learn it wont get sales
Bau Ur: Right. People really dont' understand consequences f their decisions, within the larger context of our resources.
Torley Linden: JetZep: i think a combination of technological tools + social pressure will help here. i can understand if people "just don't know", which is why it's so important to get the word out there...
JetZep Zabelin: Is there an object rendering cost display?
JetZep Zabelin: A way to see what a linked object's resources are
Squirrel Wood: wear that object
Bau Ur: smart, squirrel.
Torley Linden: and furthermore, some people will always be selfish — that's a human problem, not an SL problem — and say, "i'll leave it up to other people to wear minimal avatars while i trot around in this totally blinged-out ballerina outfit made out of 2000 prims!"
JetZep Zabelin: well i mean for when people are shopping, so they know not to buy the 2000 rendering cost boots for example
Bau Ur: But, at least they wont' expect to be admirred, because they will know that everyone else knows they are being a pig.
Torley Linden: JetZep: yeah, there isn't an easier way to do that yet with object contents... some vendors voluntarily specify how many prims and stuff are in an object BUT... it should, could be more automatic
Ruud Lathrop: Another question, how many people can get on a mainsim now a days?
Torley Linden: Bau: yup. =o)
Bau Ur: Pig in a tut
Bau Ur: tutu
Torley Linden: LOL pig in a tutu, sounds like an avatar Tooter Claxton would make
Gellan Glenelg: but, if their GPU can cope with it, a lot of people aren't going to worry about other people :(
Bau Ur: Heheheh
JetZep Zabelin: hehee
Torley Linden: Ruud: i've seen up to 100 on private islands but, on the mainland, we're keeping it at 40 still...
Bau Ur: Lord, must have been a naked island!
Ruud Lathrop: Are they ever gonna raise that?
Bau Ur: With naked avatars!
Bau Ur: 100??
Ruud Lathrop: Noo 50/60
Torley Linden: Ruud, it's likely eventually in the future, but not yet that i'm aware of...
Torley Linden: it's going to take performance increases on a number of levels to make higher #s more comfortable... unless an alternative means is found
JetZep Zabelin: as technology advances, what is possible with SL should follow
Torley Linden: i know some people had ideas for a "remote viewing" experience where people would be able to participate or watch an event in a region but their avatar wouldn't be present... but that, at this time, seems to pose a lot of complications
Ellla McMahon: I have been to a concert with 104 people ... we were asked not to breathe too deeply !!! ... obviously laggy but the music was great :)
Torley Linden: Philip himself has mentioned it was the popularization of the GeForce 2 (now considered sooo slow) and broadband that helped Second Life to proliferate
JetZep Zabelin: hehe remote viewing
Bau Ur: Yeah, I never say it work well, though I know a scripter artist who is doing cool things with the concept at a range of just 95 M, right now.
Torley Linden: Ellla: holy moly, 104 in one region? or split across two or more?
Ellla McMahon: one sim
Torley Linden: hmm i wonder how they exceeded 100, Ellla...
Torley Linden: one way i know offhand is if several Lindens were there (they can go past the limit, i believe)
Ruud Lathrop: If we all where basic avatars I think we can do more the 100 avatars :)
Ruud Lathrop: than*
Squirrel Wood: http://www.wcm.at//forum/image.php?u=3848 :p
Gellan Glenelg: lindens can tp other resi in even when sim is full, too
Torley Linden: haha Squirrel
Torley Linden: yeah Gellan but as general policy we shouldn't be doing that
Bau Ur: hmm yes there were a LOT of people at a mentor graduation party once. That must have been how it was done.
Squirrel Wood: if the situation requires it...
Torley Linden: unless the person who needs to be force-TPed is a presenter or speaker at the event, or something like that
Torley Linden: e.g., they can't have the event without them ;)
Squirrel Wood: Use the force Luke!
Gellan Glenelg: was done for a vteam meeting the other week
Bau Ur: Fair enough.
Torley Linden: apparently i'm going to be doing a video tutorial Q&A next week with our VTeam and Mentors!
Torley Linden: that'll be fun.
Gellan Glenelg: yep
Squirrel Wood: W00t!
Bau Ur: Cool.
Squirrel Wood: Have you made a vidtut of your office hours yet?
Torley Linden: no Squirrel, but i have had suggestions to do that, and to do more casual "inworld tour" videos
Torley Linden: like "oh look Torley's visiting so-and-so place!"
Torley Linden: i have taken lots of pictures tho :D
Bau Ur: Wow, Torley travelogue, like that one Michael Palin did.
Torley Linden: like... right now ... haha
JetZep Zabelin: some wegame clips would be cool.. do you have more? I only saw the one where you fall into a sim then fly off
Ruud Lathrop: Maybewe need a special Michael Palin LInden
Torley Linden: JetZep, i uploaded only a few, the software is very fun and easy to use... i haven't done more per se,
Torley Linden: but i actually hope there would be an easy way to upload to Flickr video
Torley Linden: since Flickr vids are very high-quality
Torley Linden: (relatively speaking)
Bau Ur: Alas, there is not?
Squirrel Wood: software... what are you using for machinima?
Torley Linden: haha i like some Monty Python stuff
Torley Linden: Squirrel: OH I LIKE CAMTASIA A LOT
Squirrel Wood: ah
JetZep Zabelin: yep, wegame is low quality.. quick cheap and dirty
JetZep Zabelin: but still good
Torley Linden: yeah, and free
Torley Linden: and the WeGame folks have been so helpful whenever i write them
Torley Linden: YouTube support, on the other hand, has been nonresponsive and saaaad :(
Bau Ur: Alas.
Torley Linden: i have bugs with clear repros that i've reported for several months, and some are SO obvious
Jaymes Kjeller: Plus, the comments are awful, or mostly so.
PersephoneGea Clary: good afternoon or night
Torley Linden: one thing i noticed is that YouTube's "high-quality" mode... well, it has low-quality, clipped audio
Torley Linden: hi Persephone!
Bau Ur: Hi Persephone!
PersephoneGea Clary: hi Bau
Ruud Lathrop: Hi Gea
Ruud Lathrop: THat is a way to long name :)
Torley Linden: so by choosing YouTube's high-quality mode, it's one step forward (visually), one step back (sonically) and i've told them about this and for some reason, they failed to really investigate it, even with a clear reproduction of them problem... i can entirely sympathize when people want LL to be more responsive about bugs they put forth good info on our Issue Tracker!
PersephoneGea Clary: hi Ruud thxs
Squirrel Wood: btw.... free NiN album available at http://dl.nin.com/theslip/signup - even as 24bit/96KHz wav files...
Bau Ur: :)
Torley Linden: oh yeah, you like Nine Inch Nails too, Squirrel? :D
Squirrel Wood: Sometimes ^^
Torley Linden: i've liked NIN for a long time, i think it's great Trent and Atticus and friends have released all this music recently
blogHUD Messenger: Your image post has arrived at blogHUD.com []: see http://bloghud.com/id/21815
JetZep Zabelin: sounds like the lower sound quality is intentional to compensate for the higher video
Ruud Lathrop: lol is everybody now giving away there album
Torley Linden: my favorite will continue to be "The Perfect Drug" tho for its amazing drum 'n' bass beat programming with the lovely section at the end, and that green-blue-drenched music video
JetZep Zabelin: but tis too bad their force it onto you
Torley Linden: JetZep: well, it seems like a horrible oversight, because the low-quality sound is even worse than the low-quality video versions.
Torley Linden: i'm chalking it up as an unintentional mistake for the time being :|
Squirrel Wood: low quality video, medium quality sound - or medium quality video and low quality sound... your choice :p
Torley Linden: but whatever Flickr's doing with their videos, it's funny, you're limited to 90 secs but the Flash playback quality is decidedly better than most dedicated video-sharing sites out there
Torley Linden: so i really like it so far, i mean, Flickr's UI was something i didn't grace well at first, but i've come to love it
Desiree Spitteler: hum?
Torley Linden: perhaps that was because i had been mired in so many poor UIs that i didn't know any better ;)
Torley Linden: hiya Desiree!
Bau Ur: :)
Desiree Spitteler: hi
Desiree Spitteler: :D
JetZep Zabelin: DId you hear something about the new internet "the grid". with better speed all this will change
Torley Linden: and as always if anyone has any suggestions for me to do video tutorials, particularly quick tips i can cover in 2 min. or less, let me know :) i am happy to take them on
Torley Linden: i have heard about "Internet 2" and other sorts of projects JetZep
Squirrel Wood: So you mean with "the grid" we will get better porn and more serious business?
Torley Linden: hahahaha
Torley Linden: "more serious business"
JetZep Zabelin: its being called "the grid" recently
Torley Linden: reminds me of something ;)
Torley Linden: hmmm "the grid" eh... that sounds TOO familiar ;)
JetZep Zabelin: hehe
waelya Tenk: hello! : )
Torley Linden: heyhey waelya!
Bau Ur: Torley and everyone -- does anyone know of a place and a gizmos in SL where you can learn to read music and use a gizmo to compose?
waelya Tenk: : )
JetZep Zabelin: hey waelya!
Torley Linden: Bau, i'd love to find something like that. have not yet but i was looking for such a thing awhile ago.
Bau Ur: Some kind of music reading and music theory tutorial place....
Bau Ur: hmm
Torley Linden: i dig playable musical instruments in Second Life, as latent as the sounds can be to load
Torley Linden: the joy of music is so important to teach
Bau Ur: maybe Torley you're the being to do it.
Torley Linden: =)
Torley Linden: music requires a combo of skills
waelya Tenk: reading slow : ) english hard hello all!
Bau Ur: Right, lots of them, yet some of them coudl be taught and practiced here. It could be done terrificly here, I think, and be very fun.
Geo Meek: :-)
Bau Ur: Hi Waeyla!
Bau Ur: Geo!
Torley Linden: =)
Torley Linden: yes Bau, i think so too...
JetZep Zabelin: i tried to play my guitar thru voice , but didnt have any idea how it was being heard.. i forgot to turn off the voice mod I was using.. supposedlly the guitar sounded like blips and beeps
Torley Linden: the first remarkable music-esque-thing i may've seen inworld was Oneironaut Escher's giant piano...
Torley Linden: something to teach sight reading or pitch, would be lovely...
Torley Linden: *recalls the musical exercises i grew up with*
Geo Meek: Hello Bau :-)
Bau Ur: Gosh it is so weird in a world of 7 millilon residents to see people I know, at places unrelated to the palces and activities through which I know them. How many SL residents are there, really?
Torley Linden: whoa JetZep, i wonder if you could get a recording of that, that might've been interesting
Geo Meek: 27 i think
Squirrel Wood: Oh. Torley, the Logitech MX 5500 Revolution keyboard has a display on it and SL does NOT support it yet.. :(
JetZep Zabelin: i just had the screaming bee voice mod
Bau Ur: Sorry, I interrupted, you were saying about the music?
Torley Linden: Bau, not sure offhand EXACTLY, i think that's hard to find out but i know re: concerns of bots vs. active live people, we have good people figuring out how to distinguish that better
JetZep Zabelin: and an acoustic guitar
Torley Linden: oh sucks to hear that Squirrel, is that a new one? hrmmm
Torley Linden: i should look that one up
Torley Linden: so many products on the market AHHHHHH
Torley Linden: :D
Squirrel Wood: pretty new, yes
Torley Linden: whelp, thanks each and all of you for coming to my Office Hour. i must go for now, for there is more work to do. this has been enjoyable and i wish you well... !
Bau Ur: Thank you Torley!!
Gellan Glenelg: thanks torley
JetZep Zabelin: take care Torley
Squirrel Wood: but since SL already supports that one gaming keyboard with display from logitech it should be easy to add
waelya Tenk: bye!!
Geo Meek: Thank you :-)
Jaymes Kjeller: See you around Torley! :)
Harleen Gretzky: tc Torley
Squirrel Wood: Have fun!
Squirrel Wood: and a great weekend!
PersephoneGea Clary: sorry for the question Mr Torley . but Linden Lab plans to increase the groups from 25 Current? thanks
Torley Linden: you too! bye bye for now... :)
Torley Linden: Persephone: not anytime soon, roles can help and act as sub-groups within a group...
PersephoneGea Clary: ok thxs and sorry
Torley Linden: i'd refer to http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2008/01/robin-linden-on.html :)
Torley Linden: no worries!
Torley Linden: thanks for asking, ta!
