Torley Linden: i am pretty awesome thanx, was working on newest video tutorials incl. rebranding to eventually make the titles look more official yet cool
Torley Linden: apparently i have a new title! it's "Resident Enlightenment Manager" :D
Evelyn Donner: cool
Tegg Bode: hmm official and cool, only you could handle that task :)
Johan Laurasia: woot!
Al Sonic: Hahah! That's an interesting one.
Harleen Gretzky: cool
norritt Xi: Soundnds great if you go on like that you'll become the next Roland Emmerich torley.
Evelyn Donner: grin
Torley Linden: ;)
Tegg Bode: Roland Linden?
Torley Linden: it was difficult to summarize for awhile
Torley Linden: i like Roland synthesizers
RawMilk905 Kline: may I demo something for you? a gadget to speed cubing, inspired in part by your inventory tutorial
Johan Laurasia: Your seats dont seem to like me Torley
Johan Laurasia: lol
Torley Linden: ohhhh speed cubing? sure RawMilk
Torley Linden: sorry Johan, are they all out? there's a max. of 10
Torley Linden: or are you stuck trying to sit there?
Johan Laurasia: yeah, I'm seated, just funky
Torley Linden: weird...
Torley Linden: you tried getting up and reseating... ?
Johan Laurasia: yeah
Tegg Bode: AO off perhaps?
Johan Laurasia: turned of the ao too
Torley Linden: hmmm
Evelyn Donner: crowded ;-)
RawMilk905 Kline: Box of stuff :-)
RawMilk905 Kline: did you catch that?
Torley Linden: *awaits to see what is within said box of stuff*
Torley Linden: do it again?
Torley Linden: i am zooming in closely
Evelyn Donner too
RawMilk905 Kline: name of box
Torley Linden: ahhh
Torley Linden: i certainly like how it looks, RawMilk905 :)
Evelyn Donner: grin
RawMilk905 Kline: special edition
Torley Linden: these glowy particles are trippin me out
RawMilk905 Kline: personalized for you
Evelyn Donner: hahaha
Torley Linden: er, lol_poles i mean
Torley Linden: not particles
Torley Linden: my eyes!!!
RawMilk905 Kline gave you Packing Rezzer - Torley Edition.
Torley Linden: thanks RawMilk! it's appreciated!
norritt Xi: Its my fault ;) new toy
norritt Xi: Very funny
norritt Xi gave you FREE Sky writer pen Wear and go to mouse look to write.
Torley Linden: thanx
norritt Xi: Just wear and go to mouslook
Torley Linden: i like sketch pens and air writers and such gadgets
Torley Linden: *tries*
RawMilk905 Kline: so basicly rather than rezzing a new cube and changing it's properrties
norritt Xi: Then you can write into the air when you hold the left mouse button
RawMilk905 Kline: you can just click the platform
RawMilk905 Kline: type a name
Johan Laurasia: that's cool
RawMilk905 Kline: click the box
norritt Xi: *gg*
Tegg Bode: Nice
RawMilk905 Kline: fill it
RawMilk905 Kline: take to inventory
Evelyn Donner: needful with the contents of my inv.... its like my handbag, a mess
Caitlyn Clawtooth: so Torley, get to be a kid at kids5b? :)
Kara Spengler: Torley, meet Cait
norritt Xi: We had a lotta fun with the pens yesterday
Johan Laurasia: it's a neat idea
norritt Xi: Anyone else wants one?
Johan Laurasia: I'll take one :)
Evelyn Donner: sure
Johan Laurasia: thx
Torley Linden: Caitlyn, i'll likely be rotating avatars :D i saw some really cute kid tinies at the Tiny Universe Convention last weekend
Torley Linden: and nice to meet ya
Lexi Watkin: im game
Evelyn Donner: cool TY ur sweet
Al Sonic always loves another toy.
RawMilk905 Kline: anybody else want one?
Torley Linden: there was one that appeared to be a unicorn doll sort of thing with a sprout of hair
Johan Laurasia: you never know what you're gonna get with Torley, he's like a box of chocolates
Lexi Watkin: hee hee toys are fun
Evelyn Donner: Sure Raw :-)
Torley Linden: haha i like Forrest Gump and his quotes a lot ;D
norritt Xi: You're even sweeter Evelyn =)
Caitlyn Clawtooth: neat, I am sure you will have fun between that and SL5B
Kyder Ling enters, "Hi Torley! :D"
Torley Linden: heya Kyder! good to see you inworld again!
Johan Laurasia: Since we're doing intro's, this is my friend Lexi Watkin just behind me
Torley Linden: nice to meet ya Lexi!
Lexi Watkin: Hello :)
Kyder Ling: I was waiting for ya, hehe
Lexi Watkin: my pleasure
Torley Linden: thanx for coming over to my office hour
Caitlyn Clawtooth: Johan: I know, we only have to worry about having kid's shape for Torley :)
RawMilk905 Kline: missed that
RawMilk905 Kline: anyone who wants one, IM me
RawMilk905 Kline: I have the original and the Torley flavored
Lexi Watkin: I would pay to see Johan in a kids shape
Johan Laurasia: lol
Johan Laurasia: I just picked up a few new avies
Johan Laurasia: bet u would...
Tegg Bode: Spare seat, gtg all :)
Lexi Watkin: well you have had the SAME shape for over a year
Johan Laurasia: got space ghost the other day
Al Sonic hopes the rumors about 'kids' have calmed after the blog discussion.
Torley Linden: it was good to see that update, aye
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Torley Linden: Second Life has all sorts of variety, i've seen kid-looking avatars who declared, "I'm not a child, I'm an 800-year old vampire clan leader!"
Lexi Watkin: chuckles
Al Sonic: Hehee!
Caitlyn Clawtooth: well, one of the things we are doing is turnin adults into kids, having shapes and stuff
norritt Xi: You know what Tor, I've seen kid claiming that in RL ;)
Torley Linden: hahaha
norritt Xi: *kids
Torley Linden: it gets even stranger
Tegg Bode: You can beam me up now Phillip :)
Lexi Watkin: laughs
Siann Beck: lol Norritt
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Being a kid would be an excellent cover for an 800-year-old vampire clan leader -- no one would find it remarkable that you took long naps during the day.
norritt Xi: The bes was one on a bike it was driving down the street on its bike.
Kyder Ling: It's always the ones whom we least expect. :D
norritt Xi: Was making strange noises and then it yelled "Heal me R2D2"
norritt Xi: So RL can be crazy too sometimes
Lexi Watkin: i think in SL what is strange is normal and the normal is what is strange
Torley Linden: that's a great observation, Lexi
Torley Linden: it's kinda funny, in the news some weeks ago...
Torley Linden: there was this story of a "flying penis" in RL
Evelyn Donner: wt*
Torley Linden: and every single news source that reported it, related it to Second Life o.O
Al Sonic: Yeah, that one really made the rounds.
Johan Laurasia: yeah, I thought the same thing...
Torley Linden: it was like "SL griefing in RL!"
Kyder Ling: Pfft, I saw a flying penis mobile here in SL the first week I rezzed, XD
norritt Xi: LOL
Evelyn Donner: LOOOL Anshe ;-)
Johan Laurasia: well, it reminded me of SL griefing
Torley Linden: i mean, clearly there's much more to SL than airborne phallus-things
Johan Laurasia: RL griefing basicly
Johan Laurasia: by far
Siann Beck: Yeah, I saw that Torley.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: In some sims, you would never know that there is much more ...
Johan Laurasia: heck, there's even watermelon clocks...lol
Evelyn Donner: hehe
norritt Xi: But i really wonder how a penis could fly in RL without a serious "Ouch-experince" going ahead
norritt Xi: *experience
Torley Linden: Johan, i dig those, thanks again for it :)
Kyder Ling: Wasn't there someone who entered a phallus into one of those Red Bull flying contest things?
Johan Laurasia: sure thing... np
Kyder Ling: Does that count? :o
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Hmn, think about a big balloon at the NYC Thanksgiving Day parade...
Johan Laurasia: saw your posts on flickr and slbuzz, that was really cool !
CeeJay Tigerpaw: I myself will think about something else ...
Lexi Watkin: its all about the wattermelon for get it started with a cube bit " it started with the watermelon"
norritt Xi: But talking about strange things
Johan Laurasia: lol
norritt Xi: How do you know something is strange and something else isn't?
Kyder Ling: By how much it makes you D:
Kyder Ling: hehe, just kidding, but that's sometimes what I go bye.
Siann Beck: Evereybody is somebody's weirdo.
Torley Linden: norritt, i guess it's often determined by a "majority"
Torley Linden: if you do something often and long enough though...
Torley Linden: it goes from "novelty" to "tradition"!
Torley Linden: that always makes me smile :)
Evelyn Donner: u get addicted ;-)
Latok Neumann: .. like spending time in sl?
Kyder Ling: Cultural Relevance, What we do here is often appling to others elsewhere.
Torley Linden: haha yes, totally
Latok Neumann: : )
Siann Beck: That's the great thing about SL, though -- you do't have to care what anyone else thinks.
Johan Laurasia: right, alot of people find pieced noses, belly buttons, etc, weird, but those same people find pierced ears 'normal'
Al Sonic finds Kyders typoes amusing.
norritt Xi: Yes this is the standard in psychology too - to define who is normal and who is not majority is the "benchmark"
norritt Xi: But think of WW2 for instance.
Kyder Ling: Yesh, my typos screwy,
Siann Beck: I've seen a giant ogre in pink pnaties and a walking flower pot.
norritt Xi: If you apply the majority rule to this time it would have been normal to kill millions of people
Lexi Watkin hates to thik of war
Jaymes Kjeller: Which, in my opinion, can lead to a dangerous mindset.
Evelyn Donner: well, "don't care about outhers thoughts" is very dangerous, cause i made some bad mistakes on SL that reverted to RL
norritt Xi: Sometimes this logic seems weird to me...
Siann Beck: Well, "don't care what others think" i snot the same as "don't care about others".
Siann Beck: *is not
Lexi Watkin: logic only applys to programing not people
norritt Xi: It is like "One million flies can't be wrong shit must be tasty"
Evelyn Donner: that's right
Torley Linden: there's always going to be inequal distribution curves of stuff... if there wasn't, then certain things wouldn't be "rare"
Torley Linden: Siann, that's an astute observation
Latok Neumann: it sometimes makes me sad , that the majority of people think SL is weird, but that's because of newsposts like the flying penis
Torley Linden: water is functionally more important to people than diamonds, but the latter cost way more. a lot of that has to do with mindset and marketing.
Johan Laurasia: well, the media likes to jump on stuff like that
Torley Linden: Latok, i hope in coming times that more positive and diverse stories about SL come out... and it's true the big media will distort ANYTHING, not just SL
Evelyn Donner: true
Lexi Watkin: well the media loves the negitive
Al Sonic: Especially in the case of diamonds... VERY marketed...
Latok Neumann: true
Torley Linden: they are out to sell papers and get advertisers, not to earnestly benefit people's lives (in most cases)
Johan Laurasia: right
Evelyn Donner: i have hurted a few ppl, in SL <> RL that was even more sad than the water
Siann Beck: Well, to the mainstream, SL is still a novelty, so they're going to pick upon the novel aspects.
norritt Xi: Another problem with the media is that there are often people writing about something they do not understand
Kyder Ling: Uh, is anyone else's floor and water freaking out suddenly? >_>
Torley Linden: have any of you heard of Habitat?
Torley Linden: not me, Kyder.
Kyder Ling: And I has a verrry beefy PC< >_>
norritt Xi: I recently read an article "10 facts about SL" and at LEAST 3 were totally wrong.
Johan Laurasia: I've had some personal involvement with a feww stories that have hit the media, and what suprised me the most was how many errors in the story there were
Kyder Ling: What were they?
Evelyn Donner: Habitat... is that a cause?
Al Sonic: Water level just changed for me o.0
Al Sonic: And returned.
Johan Laurasia: Tides.. new SL feature
Johan Laurasia: lol
Kyder Ling: hehe
Latok Neumann: haha
Al Sonic: Or, no, not the water.
Torley Linden: Habitat is a virtual world that came... over 20 years ago... and even back then, they needed to emphasize that there's a real person behind every avatar. and yes, they had avatars.
Kyder Ling: Long overdue if you ask me, hehe
Al Sonic: Musta been a megaprim.
Siann Beck: Well, like they say, the news is always accurate, except for the story you have personal knowledge of.
Torley Linden: i remember when Ante Flan sold many of his animated waves to fill such a need
Johan Laurasia: yeah, I played around with Onlive! Traveler back in 95
Torley Linden: http://torley.com/before-second-life-there-was-habitat
Jaymes Kjeller: The media seems to distort things for the sake of money and power, and not for informing and knowledge.
norritt Xi: They wrote SL wouldn't be unique and brought up examples, one was even WoW
Johan Laurasia: now digital space traveler
Jaymes Kjeller: At least it's how I see it.
Evelyn Donner *browsing*
Siann Beck: You're right, Jaymes
Torley Linden: Siann, i've never heard that before but that's uncanny. i sometimes find myself going, "it didn't happen that way!" or "that's outright inaccurate" to a bad news story
Torley Linden: yup Jaymes
Al Sonic: Natalia Trefoil rezzed a Box 65535x65535x.01
Torley Linden: if they can play an angle and hyperbole, they'll do it
Al Sonic: That explains it.
Torley Linden: like all those "reality" shows
Siann Beck: Oofff!
Johan Laurasia: yeah, what's real about them?
Torley Linden: behind the scenes, they get people to fight with each other
Siann Beck: I pride myself on having never watched one.
Torley Linden: "makes for more interesting tv"
Siann Beck: Well, except The Great Race.
Evelyn Donner: tsss
Torley Linden: the media often emphasizes extremes...
Jaymes Kjeller: Oh, don't get me started about them!
Torley Linden: superlatives. i enjoy the Guiness Book of World Records a lot, but it's not reflective of most people's lives.
Evelyn Donner: Not only the media, also communities. If the "gossip" goes far, one person can be wrongly accused of something he or she did not
Siann Beck: Well, it's all about what gets the eyeballs.
Torley Linden: it's more entertaining than a manual on "here's what to do"... of course, you can appeal and aspire to greater heights and achievements, but in the end, the most healthy thing is to be happy.
Torley Linden: Evelynn, i've seen that horribly with YouTube videos.
Siann Beck: So long as people tune in for garbage, that's what we'll get.
Torley Linden: YT videos that identify the wrong person... and then vigilante justice takes over
Johan Laurasia: well, I've seen some positive SL media too
Evelyn Donner: i know
Jaymes Kjeller: Not to mention the comments there, yikes!
Johan Laurasia: read a story the other day about a guy who's paralyzed, and was controlling his SL avatar with a machine that read his brainwaves
Evelyn Donner: i did it myself, i made a huge mistake, i am glad after 3 months ppl forgave me. Don't ever play with ppls feelings EVEN on SL
Torley Linden: i love emphasizing what's good out there... instead of shrinking from it
Rock Pond Pose ball: llStopAnimation: Script trying to stop animations but agent not found
Torley Linden: yeah Evelyn, there's really people and emotions behind these keyboards!
Evelyn Donner: yea
norritt Xi: Yes I think for people with handicaps in RL SL can be a great opportunity.
Siann Beck: Yeah. We've noticed that about you, Torley :)
Torley Linden: Johan: i love hearing about stuff like that, it was Pathfinder Linden who helped me be aware of some of those inspirational stories way back
Torley Linden: :-)
Evelyn Donner: i know. i jurted myself as well
Torley Linden: life, and Second Life's, just too short to wallow in misery when there's awesome stuff happening
Siann Beck: Indeed, Norritt
Evelyn Donner: yes
Latok Neumann: so true Torley : )
Al Sonic turned draw distance to 512 in the RC and crashed.
Kyder Ling: D:
Torley Linden: if you expose yourself to too much negativity (Pathfinder calls it "toxic sewage") then that becomes your "normalized" view of the world
Torley Linden: yikes Al, i'll try that later
Latok Neumann: RC9 has been very nice to me so far
Jaymes Kjeller: Although some people make it a habit to do that. I wonder why sometimes.
Johan Laurasia: my machine has a tough time with 512 meter draw distance
Evelyn Donner: sounds strange Torley, but ppl lke you or i see here at this moment makes SLife worth wile and makes you think about stuff
Al Sonic: It was by starting from something low - 200.
Torley Linden: Jaymes, i suppose different reasons, but there's sometimes self-pity, loathing, jealousy... and it becomes a vicious cycle
Al Sonic: It'd survived on 512 before.
Torley Linden: aww Evelyn, well that's not strange to me :D
Torley Linden: that's wonderful
Johan Laurasia: Yeah, there's 100 nice people for every mean one
Evelyn Donner: :_)
CeeJay Tigerpaw: But the mean ones get the attention.
Siann Beck: I agree, Johan -- the bad folks tend to get more attention, but really they're the minority.
Caitlyn Clawtooth: yeah, have found most ppl in SL to be nice once you get to know them
Johan Laurasia: yeah, 1 percent of the population drums up the most media attention it seems
Torley Linden: yup... the mean ones shouldn't get attention, because paying too much attention there discourages the nice people
Siann Beck: Yeah.
norritt Xi: Sure that is a right thing you mention Torley but avoiding "toxic sewage" is also an act of balance. Because if you avoid it too much you may tend to run away from problems that need your attention.
Jaymes Kjeller: As an end result, sometimes they resort to things like bullying to cope with it.
Evelyn Donner: indeed, and i betrayed some, i'll never forgive myself for that.
Caitlyn Clawtooth: of course, you generally do not want to get to know the person who tps in naked to a tea party :)
Torley Linden: the nice people go, "oh, you have to be mean to get attention? i'm upset and frustrated... maybe i'll be a jerk/jackass too."
Torley Linden: norritt, yeah. gotta stay afloat in the muck and know what to pull out of use. :)
Siann Beck: lol Caitlyn
Torley Linden: bullies were often bullied themselves... it's an unhealthy cycle.
Torley Linden: some people come to Second Life to deal with their mental illness and become healthier.
Torley Linden: others cause drama and dump it on others, making things worse.
Siann Beck: I can see that happening.
Torley Linden: like any tool... like a wrench, you can fix a car. that's what it's intended for. but you could also assault and maim someone with a wrench.
norritt Xi: Torley: Sounds like a form of mental entropy to me
Latok Neumann: )_0
Torley Linden: the power is in each person's hands. :)
Evelyn Donner: yes
RawMilk905 Kline: but it is much easier to avoid a nasty person here
RawMilk905 Kline: than in rl
Johan Laurasia: Well, I have a tendancy to befriend newbies, and try to help them out, give them a push in the right direction, and it works....
Torley Linden: yes RawMilk, easy to mute or TP away...
Siann Beck: True, RM
Torley Linden: totally Johan... i was helped when i was new... and very grateful, then i ended up helping others
Torley Linden: that POSITIVE cycle has flourished
Kara Spengler: yeah, one support place I used to volunteer at had a policy to be nice to griefers because they could just be looking for support but are hiding it
Johan Laurasia: I met Lexi the first time she got on, and we became friends, and now she's a top designer in SL and buying her own sim :)
Torley Linden: if someone has a good first impression in SL and help, they'll definitely be happier here
Siann Beck thinks of a few RL people she'd like to mute
CeeJay Tigerpaw: We have a regular group of people in Violet who help newbies and give them a push in the right direction.
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Seems to work well.
Torley Linden: ooh nice story
Lexi Watkin: shhh J you make me blush!
Torley Linden: i like muting in the RC, it turns people into generic gray shapes
Johan Laurasia: she dwarfs me..
Latok Neumann: I stared visiting welcome areas again, and I realy enjoy helping new redients now. I had not done that in many many months
Kara Spengler: I tended to be quicker on thekick/bans than most .... if they were obviously disrnings ...
Kyder Ling: And into imposters! :D
Johan Laurasia: the learner has become the master :)
norritt Xi: Bug or feature Torley?
Torley Linden: it's been a long time since i did a tour of the Infohubs
Torley Linden: HAHAHA Kyder yes
Kara Spengler: warnings that is
Kyder Ling: Hehe, grayed out and Imposters!
Torley Linden: norritt, totally a feature
Evelyn Donner: hehe. Helping others is good also on RL
Kyder Ling: Reduce annoyance AND lag
Torley Linden: Kyder: well-said. well, two birds with one stone.
norritt Xi: LOL great just like the clouds gotta love em
Kara Spengler: Torley: all is lag and naked ppl there
Torley Linden: mmmm clouds
RawMilk905 Kline: I'm very scared of the shiney blue ui
Evelyn Donner: LOL
Torley Linden: RawMilk, hmmm we're eventually going to want to give more custom skinnable ability anyway.
Torley Linden: i can't imagine us sticking to one constrained look.
Evelyn Donner: cool
Johan Laurasia: Philip said it's going to be skinnable, so I'm figuring you'll be able to change it 'back' if you want
norritt Xi: Maybe we should make the muted people thunderclouds =D
Torley Linden: infact, https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:Viewer_Skins
Torley Linden: yes Johan
Torley Linden: you can hack the viewer skins now if you'd like to take a stab at it, it isn't THAT user friendly yet... but it's on the way...
RawMilk905 Kline: this is at least neutral, the classic ui
Torley Linden: there's a video tutorial on that page
RawMilk905 Kline: thanks
Torley Linden: some of it's a change of perspective tho; because say, Windows XP Silver is pretty "bright" whereas Vista Aero default is dark
Johan Laurasia: yeah, I saw the xml file with the info in there about the skins
Lexi Watkin: Johan hack it for me? ples
Johan Laurasia: lol
Johan Laurasia: I'lll probably wait until it's built into the client
Torley Linden: Mac OS X is mainly bright grays and some blue (and colored buttons)
Johan Laurasia: personally, I'm not into the shiny metalic look
Torley Linden: anyone who remembers Amiga Workbench... the early versions... knows what it was like to live in a world of blue, orange, white, and black!
Lexi Watkin: I will wait till it comes out in pink
Torley Linden: Johan, what sorts of UIs do you prefer?
Torley Linden: mmm pink
Caitlyn Clawtooth: unless you like tweaking the UI :)
Jaymes Kjeller: I don't bother with Luna (Windows XP default), I use the classic look.
norritt Xi: I actually loved the work bench
Johan Laurasia: me thinks Torley's videos will sport a 'pink and green' look before too long
Kara Spengler: Amiga 1000!!!
Torley Linden: haha Johan actually i'm trying to stay as close to the default as possible
Torley Linden: some things (like font size) nonwidthstanding
Johan Laurasia: yeah, for new user friendliness
Lexi Watkin: awwww you should watermelonize it
norritt Xi: I never had an Amiga myself unfortunately but I used them on many occasions at that time. And the UI was somehow more charming than the PC "UI"
Lexi Watkin: gosh i think I made up a word
Johan Laurasia: he'll have two installs
Kara Spengler: I loved how you could quit the entire UI and work with the computer at the shell level
Johan Laurasia: u know he wont be able to resist the power of the Watermelon
Lexi Watkin: giggles
Siann Beck: Maybe you can have a watermelon skin for your own use, and switch to standard for your videos.
Lexi Watkin: I want to see the videos with watermelon power
Lexi Watkin pouts
Johan Laurasia: lol
Jaymes Kjeller: I don't think I've ever used an Amiga
Johan Laurasia: I have
Al Sonic: Lexi, if he makes a skinning tutorial after skinning is fully implemented, he can watermelonize that.
Johan Laurasia: everything between now and a TRS-80 Model I
Torley Linden: hahahahaah
Torley Linden: i'd gladly do skinning tutorials in the future
Latok Neumann: even MSX?
Siann Beck: Sounds about like me, Johan.
norritt Xi: Torley's image even have their own format ".png" stands for "pink 'n green" ;)
Torley Linden: i'm also waiting for WindLight to come full-fledged server-side as shareable inventory so i can make tutorials (artistic ones) about that as well
Torley Linden: LOL norritt you are crackin me up
Torley Linden: that is TOO FUNNEH
norritt Xi: *images
Siann Beck: "There's more than one way to skin a UI"
Lexi Watkin: lol
Torley Linden: hahaha Siann
Torley Linden: omg that's great
Al Sonic: Oh yeah, that one's really high on my interests.
Torley Linden: that would be a great motto
Johan Laurasia: I can see it now.. "Friendly Greetings.. today's video, skinning, let's make a standard viewer look all watermelon-y
Evelyn Donner: lol
Torley Linden: i got a Nokia N800 recently, and Maemo is pretty slick
Torley Linden: Johan hahahahaha
Torley Linden: how to watermelonize the world!
Johan Laurasia: lol
Kyder Ling: So guys, I'd like to share something. I'm nearing my frsit rez day here in SL, and what started as a 1 week little dip into the abyss, came out actually really well. I've met a ton of really nice and awesome people within the year but also really cool placecs that have piled up in my landmark folder. Well, I was thinking about how I can sort of pay a tribute to SL, and I think I got it...
Al Sonic: Windlight would be so much more thrilling of a shared experience once it's server-side.
Latok Neumann: I love my N800. which I actually won in SL!
Evelyn Donner: I have a BlackBerry, is there a SL client for that device :-D
Torley Linden: Kyder was sharing his idea with me... i think it's pretty cool
Torley Linden: Latok, where'd you win it? OMG
Stephen Posaner: I wish
Latok Neumann: in the PopSci pavilion
Torley Linden: Evelyn: not that i know of but Vollee recently introduced the SL viewer for certain cellphones
Kyder Ling: Most people see SL as with terrible graphics and really unsophistacted areas and such, well, I know, and we all know that it simply is not true, but instead of just taking screenshots of sunsets, I am thinking about doing a video presentation.
Evelyn Donner: grin
Jaymes Kjeller: Like the iPhone
Evelyn Donner: LOL
Evelyn Donner: Noooooo!
Johan Laurasia: Saw something about SL for mobile recently, it's available on newer 3G phones
Johan Laurasia: and the iPhone
Kyder Ling: A really nice high rez pretty fly through of SL's coolest places all set to really cool music,
Evelyn Donner: that would be working and SL on my mobile, i would get fired :-)
Jaymes Kjeller: I wouldn't use SL with it though, unless it had a stylus.
Evelyn Donner: BlackBerry has a QWERTY kb :D
norritt Xi: Kyder: The problem is that many techically not that much experienced people are not able to distinguish between what the SL is able to perform and what the users make of it.
Kyder Ling: It's going to be a lot of work, but I think it will definately be worth it because SL just is made up of so much, I wanyt to share it.
Latok Neumann: exactly noritt
Johan Laurasia: definately alot easier to share once it's widely available on a mobile platform
norritt Xi: So even prim crap can be rendered very nicely though still it looks crappy
Torley Linden: *listens*
Johan Laurasia: well, mobile devices have their limitations
Torley Linden: Kyder, by any chance, are you familiar with films like Koyaanisqatsi?
Lexi Watkin: if SL went mobal I could leave my house again!
Johan Laurasia: lol
Kara Spengler: I loved that flick!
Siann Beck: I've heard of it, but haven't seen it.
Al Sonic: Hm, I think what would be just totally wild is if when a sim owner changed the sim's day cycle to a new setup, the whole sky would drift into its new place over the course of a second.
Kyder Ling: Sorry guys, I had a phone call,
Johan Laurasia: can be done
Al Sonic: Just an amusing thought.
Kyder Ling: And no I had not Torley, but what do you guys think?
norritt Xi: Lexi: Might be not that good if you have a life insurance. They could find out that SL users are statiscially driven through by busses more than none SL users and then they'll raise the fees ;)
Jaymes Kjeller: I've never seen it.
Johan Laurasia: lol
Torley Linden: Kyder, Koyaanisqatsi is a really inspiring (but sometimes sad) look at planet Earth
Johan Laurasia: yeah
Evelyn Donner: Hey Brenda, huggzzz
Torley Linden: it's known for pioneering timelapse cinematography
Kyder Ling: I'll google it, :3
Torley Linden: Al: hahah yeah, transitions like that would rock
Brenda Hitendra: Hello Mother dearest
Torley Linden: i prefer smooth transitions over abrupt changes ;)
Torley Linden: hello!
Evelyn Donner: :)
norritt Xi: But there is another interesting thingy being developed
norritt Xi: A super advanced Space Navigator
Kyder Ling: I just want to show off for SL. We all know here how awesome it is, but there really isn't much to persuade people who visit the website to try it other than really pretty screenshots and promises of a utopia. XP
CeeJay Tigerpaw: It might be fun if teleporting worked like a video fadein/fadeout
Kyder Ling: Maybe one day, hehe
Kyder Ling: Went everyone has FIOS internets and super computers.
Johan Laurasia: or like the wormhole effect from contact
Johan Laurasia: lol
Latok Neumann: I'd love to try the space navigator, but is it accurate enough?
Siann Beck: Maybe we could have customizable teleport effects.
Damani Roadster 0.50 - watermelon: You are not the owner...
CeeJay Tigerpaw: The "star gate" from "2001: A Space Odyssey", should be fun and doable.
Torley Linden: i'd like FIOS myself :)
Johan Laurasia: I'm sorry Dave.. I'm afraid I can't do that right now....
Siann Beck: lol
Torley Linden: Kyder, even doing a short demo/draft might be very inspiring
norritt Xi: This device is a kind of "walking machine" like in the fitness studios
CeeJay Tigerpaw: It shouldn't be too hard to come up with some animation to play while the TP is taking place, rather than just a black screen.
Jaymes Kjeller: FIOS? what's that?
Torley Linden: and encourage more people to be interested
Kyder Ling: FIOS = Fiber Optic Internets
Torley Linden: CeeJay: aye, there was wormhole concept art before that
norritt Xi: You can walk on it in any direction without moving away from your spot
Torley Linden: but it wasn't actually used inworld
Kyder Ling: It's suuuper fast, like being able to download HD movies in 5min, fast
Torley Linden: there are some prototype pictures floating around the Net XD
norritt Xi: Sou you actually could walk through SL by walking on it in RL
Kyder Ling: And yeah, I am going to be working on a trailer of sorts,
CeeJay Tigerpaw: Or a "jump to lightspeed" should be possible.
Siann Beck: What happens when you run into lag, though, Norritt?
Cazzo Constantine: hi al, what are talking about?
Johan Laurasia: all sorts of effects would crop up if teleports were 'skinnable'
norritt Xi: Though I think it will nod be available for consumer purposes very soon
Johan Laurasia: hey, I coined a phrase... skinnable teleports :)
Johan Laurasia: lol
Kyder Ling: but it is going to be hard to get started recording everything together, I need ideas for some of the technical stuff that gets in the way, ensuring a smooth movement from within mouselook,
norritt Xi: Siann: Maybe they multiply the speed of the walking machine by 100 for half a second and then stop it at once to emulate the lag ;)
Siann Beck: lol
Jaymes Kjeller: Next thing you know, it will be like "The Matrix"
norritt Xi: Which brings us back to SL and RL life insurance
Johan Laurasia: I've seen the (bot) farms.... lol
Siann Beck: Or you get into one of those lag walks where you end up across the sim, and the device throws you through a wall
Lexi Watkin: lol it is the The Matrix already
Evelyn Donner: Well, Torley and others, i have to go do some quality time with my daughter Brenda. I hope to see you soon all. Love ya all. Friendly Greetings from Holland
Jaymes Kjeller: Imagine calling your insurance company due to that
Johan Laurasia: c ya Evelyn :)
Torley Linden: have a good one Evelyn!
Torley Linden: thanks for visiting and take care
RawMilk905 Kline: nice to meet you
Siann Beck: Bye Evelyn
Latok Neumann: goedenavond Evelyn ; )
Sheet Spotter: Have you thought about auctioning off cameo roles in your VidTuts, for charity?
Brenda Hitendra: Nice to meet everyone have a grand time
Evelyn Donner: you all too
Torley Linden: Sheet, yes, but then i thought it might be too complicated, since i'm so spontaneous
Siann Beck: You too, Brenda.
norritt Xi: There is some info about that device BTW: http://www.gizmowatch.com/entry/cyberwalk-walk-virtually-but-naturally/
Torley Linden: i'd like to see some great gadget blogs for SL... there's a lot of fashion blogs but ones focused on more technical sorts of handy devices would rock
Torley Linden: i've seen some impressive sit-hack teleport devices... (locally, within a region)... like the animated ones at The World
Johan Laurasia: Yeah, I started a scripting blog.. maybe I'll start blogging about hardware gadgets too
Multi Chair Crate v1.0.42 (TORLEY MOD) whispers: Maximum number of chairs reached, please rez another Multi Chair table.
Kyder Ling: Hey! I think I has idea! What kind of nifty Sidebar things would be cool to have for Vista in regards to SL?
Torley Linden: haha yeah Johan you definitely know what time it is
Cazzo Constantine: YOU SUCK!!!
Torley Linden: Kyder, hmmm i wonder... some sort of communication panel eventually
Torley Linden: WHAT!?!?!?
Kyder Ling: Maybe a little notifier thingy that lets you know when your viewer needs an update or when the servers are being taken down? that would be kinda neato.
Velouria Infinity: aloha everyone
Torley Linden: heya Velouria :)
Johan Laurasia: RSS kinda does that
Torley Linden: Kyder, that would be useful... but yeah, what Johan said... grid status updates are RSSable as is the normal blog
Johan Laurasia: but it wouldnt be impossible to make something like that
Kyder Ling: I'm still waiting for SLIM (SL-Instant Messanger), No booting into SL, just log in and chit chat! It would be handy for people with laptops and such
Johan Laurasia: not sure exactly how the sidebar thingy in vista works
Cazzo Constantine: Hi sheet
Torley Linden: light clients would open up a lot more usability for SL...
Siann Beck: I think light clients would be great.
norritt Xi: Well I was hoping that this "SL IM" would be implemented into the website sooner or later. There is already a friends list
Johan Laurasia: I think there's some websites that let u send IM's
Jaymes Kjeller: Maybe something like Skype's "Heartbeat" system, which gives infomation about each part of the grid. I would think that would be useful.
norritt Xi: So why not IMing your contacts via the website
Torley Linden: Jaymes, some of us have specifically named Skype as an inspiration
Torley Linden: i really agree... Robin Harper (Linden) thinks that's a super example (Heartbeat) as well
Velouria Infinity: Katharine Berry has implemented that via Ajax
norritt Xi: A simple java chatplugin like the one for the premium support would do that job.
Torley Linden: Skype's UI (save for a few annoying bugs i've noticed) are awesome
Jaymes Kjeller: Ah, that I didn't know!
Cazzo Constantine: ehi sheet, or i've to call u shit?!
Torley Linden: okay Cazzo, you can knock it off, no need to be rude dude
Johan Laurasia: one that would work on Java enabled mobile devices would be nice
Johan Laurasia: so one could IM via a mobile device
Siann Beck: Torely, one quick question, do you know if/when Katt holds OH? It seems that of all people, she would be one to.
Johan Laurasia: I would probably have already written it if RL to SL emails weren't broken :(
Torley Linden: Siann, hmmm not offhand... let's see... she's still getting acclimated to LL but i'll ask her about that! :D
Sheet Spotter: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Office_Hours
Latok Neumann: ... I got just a rl email into SL...
Torley Linden: yeah she's not listed on there Sheet,
Siann Beck: Great.
Torley Linden: thanks for the link...
Johan Laurasia: was it a reply from an IM?
Torley Linden: more Lindens should have Office Hours and fill out their profiles with useful stuff!
Siann Beck: Yeah, I have the Google calendar too, but Kats not on there.
Latok Neumann: maybe he used an earlier IM, that's possible
Siann Beck: Amen!
Johan Laurasia: agreed Torley
Squirrel Wood: more office hours? How am I supposed to make them all? :p
Johan Laurasia: I go to other Linden's office hours at times to find no one there...
Torley Linden: especially a diverse variety of people from different teams
Siann Beck: Last time I replied to an IM via email, it arrived about four hours later.
Torley Linden: Squirrel i think you hold a record or something :)
Johan Laurasia: or a canceled note
Kyder Ling averts his virgin eyes.
Squirrel Wood: I would suggest teaming up on office hours
Torley Linden: Squirrel, like how do ya mean>
Squirrel Wood: like the triages
RawMilk905 Kline: It was great to be here
RawMilk905 Kline: I was wanting to catch one for a long time
Torley Linden: oh yeah. sometimes teaming up is real fun, like the ol' WindLight office hours.
RawMilk905 Kline: but I was always working
Torley Linden: sometimes at Bridie's Bug Triages tho, the Lindens outnumber Residents!
Velouria Infinity: pastrami, prospero, the server deploy and client-side are all very present on the blog and informative, they prolly feel better that way even if Pastrami has in-world hours, Katt may feel still unsure but that's understandable
Squirrel Wood: Aye
Torley Linden: well i'm glad you could make it here, RawMilk
Al Sonic wants to get back on the RC to test that visual muting,heh...
RawMilk905 Kline: Great to meet you :-)
Siann Beck: I need to get going, as well. Good to see you all, and interesting discussion.
Torley Linden: some Lindens don't have Office Hours yet because they're new and still getting settled in with it all... the term is "drinking from the firehose", ha!
Torley Linden: thanx for coming Siann, have a great day!
Velouria Infinity: lol
Johan Laurasia: lol
Siann Beck: You too!
norritt Xi: Al: RC 9 is out for a couple of hours now
Squirrel Wood: Ooo... mute = low-fi avatar ^^ All pixely and blocky
Kyder Ling: Yep, Imposter!
RawMilk905 Kline: nice meeting all of you actually
RawMilk905 Kline: :-)
norritt Xi: Just testing it - great so far.
Johan Laurasia: likewise RM
Torley Linden: basically the Orientation process @ Linden Lab for new employees, we've kept making it more gentle and smooth but the fact remains, like good gosh, it's an ONSLAUGHT of info
Kyder Ling: Muting solves the annoyance AND the lag. :3
Latok Neumann: RC9 is great. higher framerate then RC8 and no freezes at all yet (using an iMac)
Johan Laurasia: thx RM
Torley Linden: cool to hear that Latok
Torley Linden: one of those aluminium new iMacs?
Caitlyn Clawtooth: some office hours get change with no notice .... have gone to some and they were either canceled w/out telling anyone or it was 'oh, didn't you know it is at xyz at abc o'clock now?' "no, I read the callendar"
Torley Linden: Apple's design is always so slick
Latok Neumann: yep
Torley Linden: Caitlyn, that SUCKS to hear. i agree that notification should always be given.
Johan Laurasia: yep
Velouria Infinity: RC9 is great and bring good fixes on the MacBook pro, that was a priority i guess and it's here now
Torley Linden: earlier today i know i was gonna be late so i posted a sign
RawMilk905 Kline: yw, anbody else want a packing rezzer before I go
Al Sonic: Yeah they'd said RC9 should be a return to Release Candidate quality performance.
Caitlyn Clawtooth: the aluminum iMac is AWESOME!!!!!!
Torley Linden: if i'm ever late or absent, i really really apologize... don't want to waste anyone's time
Torley Linden: and after all if you came to see me, i'm pleased :-)
Latok Neumann is a very happy 24" iMac user :D
norritt Xi: Yeah thats a good point
RawMilk905 Kline: this is the only place I'll give out the watermelon one
Torley Linden: but what i really like is getting on extended riffs about various topics
Torley Linden: from one transition to the next... whoa
RawMilk905 Kline: :-)
Kyder Ling: It's okay your sign was cute enough to me me forgive it
Johan Laurasia: yeah yeah, guy gets a clock, and what.. hour late at his very next meeting... lol
Squirrel Wood: We do not get enough torley thrughout the week ^^
Torley Linden: haha Kyder, i was like, "i can't decide on a font, darnit... okay, okay... write something up!"
Johan Laurasia: just kidding T
Torley Linden: sometimes i'm typographically impaired
Stephen Posaner: lol
Kyder Ling: We all air
Kyder Ling: :3
Lexi Watkin: lol Johan
Johan Laurasia: lol
Torley Linden: Cazzo, i know we're in a Mature region, but i'd feel better if you wore some clothes out in the open here. can you put something on?
Torley Linden: XD
Al Sonic: Yeah your handwriting can look awesome too.
Torley Linden: hahahaah
Al Sonic: (torley :D)
Torley Linden: i scribble and doodle
Johan Laurasia: heh
Torley Linden: have you ever seen my crazy watermelon sketch... where is that *looks*
Lexi Watkin: he gets a clock like that and i dont have a pink one yet!
Johan Laurasia: that kinda happened a while back when Philip was on
Torley Linden: i encourage everyone to doodle and let their ideas out without self-judgment
norritt Xi: Yeah and now you even have a virtual pen OMG what did I do Torley will scribble all over the grid
Johan Laurasia: the restraint Philip showed was amazing...lol
Johan Laurasia: he's actually a really nice guy
Torley Linden: the way Philip laughs when he sees some of this stuff live isgreat
Torley Linden: :)
Johan Laurasia: for a big shot :)
Kyder Ling: I doodle in MS paint, It's suprisingly a good stress relief. :3
Torley Linden: he's pretty mellow about it
Latok Neumann: haha
Johan Laurasia: yeah
Torley Linden: he got a new codpiece upon his graduation to the Board of Directors
Kyder Ling: XD
Johan Laurasia: oh, your name came up Torley, Philip had one thing to say about you...
Johan Laurasia: "Torley is cool"
Torley Linden: http://www.flickr.com/photos/torley/2476870655/in/set-72157604357899854/

Torley Linden: i haven't used GraphicConverter in YEARS
Kara Spengler: graphicconverter that is
Torley Linden: but i do remember good things about it

RawMilk905 Kline: I'll have to snoop it out then
