WindLight/Office Hours/2007-12-20
Pastrami Linden: hey everyone- Welcome to Windight Office Hours!
Summer Seale: hihi
Pastrami Linden: please IM me questions so we can process
Taarna Welles: heya
Pastrami Linden: in order
Pastrami Linden: Electric Delcon: Why does the linux first look client still have the 3 graphic tabs?
Tao Takashi: Hi there
Pastrami Linden: Eric, thoughts?
Jeremy Linden is blinded by Tao's brilliant noggin.
Summer Seale gave you Summer Seale - CHRISTMAS GIFT.
Torley Linden: Hello, nice to see you all at our Office Hour! *waddles up onstage*
Summer Seale: hey tao =)
Pastrami Linden: BigPapi?
Tao Takashi: apparently you use windlight ;-)
Summer Seale: hey torley =)
Daedalus Young: hiya
BigPapi Linden: Nope. I'd have to ask Moss.
Pastrami Linden: Interesting
Tao Takashi: I discovered glow today ;-)
Zen Linden: that's strange if it has the old graphics tabs
Summer Seale: glow rocks
BigPapi Linden: We'll look into that Electric
Torley Linden: Tao, very nice glowhead!
Summer Seale: lol i see your glow around your face
Summer Seale: ya =)
Summer Seale: totally awesome =)
Torley Linden: What'd I miss so far?
Electric Delcon: ok =)
Tao Takashi: basically I visited The Abyss and glowified my sim afterwards ;-)
Torley Linden: Haha, the funny thing is The Abyss actually has a lot of FAKE glow... baked into textures before WindLight was re-released to public.
Tao Takashi: well, actually I wonder if it's possible technically to adjust the glow even more ;-)
Tao Takashi: like color
Summer Seale: i think glow color is based on light color
Tao Takashi: nope
Summer Seale: merry christmas hypatia =)
Tao Takashi: not for me at least
Summer Seale: wow now that's some *serious* Glow
Summer Seale: what are the settings for that cube?
Torley Linden: Glow intensity = 1.00
Torley Linden: MAXXED OUT.
Summer Seale: wow
Aki Shichiroji is kicking herself for not logging in on WL today :P
Summer Seale: nice
Summer Seale: does glow put out light even if you don't make it a light emitter?
Tao Takashi: now what's missing is the accompanying glow on the floor ;-)
Summer Seale: lol
Summer Seale: i feel like we're about to embark on a new 80's neon glow fad....
BigPapi Linden: summer, it doesn't not emit light
Summer Seale: ya i didn't think so
BigPapi Linden: I just "looks bright"
Summer Seale: ya
Torley Linden: Summer: If by "light" you mean "local lighting", then no. But the objects that have glow apply to them do themselves look "lit".
Summer Seale: but it looks *so* bright that it might as well emit it! =)
Torley Linden: I defer to BigPapi on such matters!
BigPapi Linden: the watermelon is right
Hypatia Callisto: I quite like glow... wishing I had lsl for it :D
Torley Linden: Summer, having both as independent controls offers the most flexibility.
Summer Seale nods
Torley Linden: There are some cases in which people want to defy the laws of physics, etc. =)
Zen Linden: hypatia, in time
Zen Linden: :)
Tao Takashi: unfortunately you cannot see the arrows anymore for moving the objects ;-)
Summer Seale: i defy them all the time
Summer Seale: i already have been selling sculptie snowmen with slight glow
Hypatia Callisto: I've used it in the new streetlamps for Caledon Cape Wrath
Torley Linden: Ah crap good point Tao, do you know if that's on the Issue Tracker? It should be within the Glow Meta-Issue thing... if not, it'd be great to have reported!
Torley Linden: I have LOVED seeing streetlamps + such with glow while wandering around, esp. in places that existed before glow that now have it to touch up, accent, and emphasize specific elements. Great design.
Summer Seale: ya i did some streetlamps with glow as well
Summer Seale: gorgeous
Tao Takashi: there we have the glow on the floor ;-)
Torley Linden: Sweet, I wanna see those!
Summer Seale: look
Torley Linden: Did anyone log the first 10 min. of this meeting and can email it to me (torley at lindenlab dot com) so I can include it in the transcript we'll post afterwards?
Summer Seale: i just came from there
Summer Seale: it's the christmas village we are making at the french welcoming newbie sims
Torley Linden: Oh, very nice.
Summer Seale: ya you shoudl come!
Torley Linden: *looks at picture closely*
Zen Linden: THERE AFTER ME LUCKY CHARMS
Summer Seale: lol i made the particles too
Torley Linden: Very festive, I like the snow on the roofs... are those sculpties? They look kinda soft.
Jeremy Linden: I think I've got it, Torley. I missed maybe a minute.
Summer Seale: and a the sculptie snow
Summer Seale: yup
Zen Linden: s/THERE/THEY'RE for the grammar nazis
Summer Seale: us french admins are doing it
Taarna Welles: sorry I have to go :) but interesting meeting :)
Torley Linden: Thanx Jeremy, that would be awesome, please send at your earliest convenience.
WidgetHUD v1.1: Torley Linden has pinged you.
Hypatia Callisto loves glow
Torley Linden: Nice to have you here Taarna!
Tao Takashi: I made some photos at The abyss and my sim at http://flickr.com/photos/taotakashi with some glow
Torley Linden: BRB!
Torley Linden: THE GLOW KNOWS
Jeremy Linden: Torley, do you mind if I send you the whole thing at the end, or is it easier if I just send what I have so far?
Summer Seale: that was my sim 3 weeks ago
Summer Seale: see the tree?
Summer Seale: sculpties too
Summer Seale: but the ornaments glow as well
Summer Seale: and the ice
Summer Seale: very pretty for christmas time. it came *just* in time
McCabe Maxsted: that's hotness
Summer Seale: thanks <3
salih Aeghin: hi everybody
salih Aeghin: i have q
Summer Seale: hi salih =)
salih Aeghin: pls
salih Aeghin: aswer me if you know answer
Summer Seale: IM your questions to pastrami linden aparently =)
Torley Linden: Yup, please load Pastrami up with the Q's so Team WindLight can answer!
Torley Linden: (I'm back.)
Aki Shichiroji: wb
Torley Linden: Jeremy, yup, if you can send the whole thing that would be wicked.
WidgetHUD v1.1: Torley Linden has pinged you.
Puma Jie: yay team windlight!
Pastrami Linden: Aki Shichiroji: Hi Pastrami - As far as questions are concerned... I posted this issue on Dec 6 but have not had a chance to bring it up at a subsequent meeting. I did mention it before and was asked to create an issue for it. Would you happen to know what might be causing this issue? http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3718
Tao Takashi: I can ask everytime when Nimble will be coming but not sure this will lead us far ;-)
Tao Takashi: at least I seem to have now sky _and_ water pretty on that computer
salih Aeghin: what is the name of the island which is opened when we log in this game
Aki Shichiroji: Specifically for those who can't check the link - it's an alpha channel issue
Torley Linden: Aki, I wonder if that's related to alpha textures going opaque at a distance?
Torley Linden: I don't see any linked issues but...
Pastrami Linden: that's what I was wondering Torley
Aki Shichiroji: possibly, but they are opaque up close too
salih Aeghin: anyone know
salih Aeghin: ?
Aki Shichiroji: LOD doesn't seem to change it
Torley Linden: Aki, this look same/similar https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3101 ?
Aki Shichiroji: odd. i haven't seen that happen before
Torley Linden: And yup, there've been times when I zoomed in and alpha stuff stayed opaque.
BigPapi Linden: That does look different than the lod issue
Aki Shichiroji: it doesn't look like anything OS specific
Torley Linden: Intermittently eh... hmmm...
Torley Linden: it is odd!
Torley Linden: (We're glad you brought it up, Aki.)
Aki Shichiroji: and unfortunately, i have not been able to get a hold of anyone who saw similar issues
Pastrami Linden: I wish we had a LOL issue
BigPapi Linden: That's an actual bug, because the optimization that turns on alpha masking and makes the object opaque should always work in the case of the examples in that jira that Aki posted
Torley Linden: I haven't seen alpha particles go opaque like that.
Aki Shichiroji: yeah, it got me by surprise.
Pastrami Linden: Drew Dzieciol: Last time I was here we spoke about the trees being upgraded. I see the tree's lighting now looks much better; but I was wondering if in the near future the 5 year old trees will be replaced with new ones? Thank you.
Pastrami Linden: soon Drew
Torley Linden: Aki: So you see this bug in the current WL viewer once every few hours, then you relog and it looks correct again?
Tao Takashi: soon? this week? ;-)
Aki Shichiroji: hehehe... soon... to the collective sigh to all the tree makers :B
Drew Dzieciol: yay fank you
Pastrami Linden: within the next year SpeedTree or something like it will be in there
Tao Takashi: cool :)
Pastrami Linden: can't tell if it's 3 months away or 9
Pastrami Linden: but soon
Pastrami Linden: :)
Hypatia Callisto: yay
Tao Takashi: better would be this week though ;-)
salih Aeghin: does anyone want to earn money with contest
Drew Dzieciol: ok thank you
Aki Shichiroji: Torley> yes, but it sometimes reappears after a few hours
Pastrami Linden: salih I do
Torley Linden: Yup, and we have a Q on our FAQ too, "Are you ever going to add [INSERT COOL FEATURE HERE]?" @ http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Windlight#Are_you_ever_going_to_add_.5BINSERT_COOL_FEATURE_HERE.5D.3F which we'll beef up when we actually work on some of these.
Torley Linden: (Or by then, those projects may have their own pages.)
Pastrami Linden: Electric Delcon: I'm not sure if this is within the scope of this Q&A but when will the remote texture loading be ready for LSL? =)
BigPapi Linden: Don't know that anybody here can answer that one Electric.
Tao Takashi: according to Zero they have code for that somewhere but in a very early project
Jeremy Linden: Can you define "remote"?
Tao Takashi: first up is to exchange the texture serving
Torley Linden: Oh, this is the "Texture downloads over HTTP" project?
Tao Takashi: probably to centralize it instead of doing it via the sim
Electric Delcon: Hosting the texture on an outside server and loading it with LSL =)
Electric Delcon: Yes
Tao Takashi: we discussed this early at Zero Linden's office hour
Pastrami Linden: Summer Seale: i talked to a skin maker last night and i'm wondering how much more work you will be doing on face/skin tone dynamic lighting if any becuase many other people are wondernig if their expensive skins are suddenly going to become useless.
Tao Takashi: I guess it is a bit away
Tao Takashi: and I guess it might be part of the new grid architecture project
Pastrami Linden: Summer, look to tonight's blog post
Torley Linden: Yeah, last I heard, Zero would know more... also see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Web_Textures if you haven't yet.
Tao Takashi: or at least enabled by that
Pastrami Linden: or early tomorrow morning
Tao Takashi: I would be happy with an easy API for uploading textures automatically though ;-)
Torley Linden: And Summer, I've certainly seen a lot of beautiful skins in WindLight too (as evidenced by 1000s of pictures I've seen posted to Flickr, Snapzilla, etc.) so it depends on the particular skin and WindLight settings, and some other considerations like local lighting.
Summer Seale: ya
Torley Linden: Pictures would help communicate particular problems. =)
Summer Seale: mine is nice with my settings with face light etc
Summer Seale: i wasn't talking about my own tho
Torley Linden: Facelights are great. *nods*
BigPapi Linden: sigh.
Summer Seale: i was talking to the creator of Nomine skins last night and we were discussing the changes she was making because of windlight
Pastrami Linden: know your product, BigPapi
Pastrami Linden: :)
BigPapi Linden hates face lights
Hypatia Callisto does too
Torley Linden: I feel something similar is going to happen when we have "real" shadows and some people who've done baked-in shadows say it interferes.
Torley Linden: Why's that, BigPapi?
Summer Seale: hehe yes of course
BigPapi Linden: They are unnatural, and they remove 1 light from the scene for everybody else to use.
BigPapi Linden: If you go to a nice build with well placed local lights
Hypatia Callisto: Depends Torley
Torley Linden: I don't have an objection to being "unnatural" but I do wish we could see more lights at once...
Tao Takashi: but the minority has shadows baked in ;-)
Torley Linden: ;)
BigPapi Linden: and it is visited by X number of people with face lights, you are now interfering with the build.
Hypatia Callisto: if you have baked the texture with hdri, like I do, usually the lighting is very even, and will still look quite fine
Gene Dwi: ambient
Tao Takashi: but I know that we sometimes have very vocal minorities ;-)
BigPapi Linden: torley, never going to happen. This is a hard limit of opengl
Pastrami Linden: yeah you all will like our forthcoming update + my blog post on aesthetics
Torley Linden: BigPapi, that sounds like the grounds for an minimalist opera/stage play, "6 people with face lights in a lit build".
Torley Linden: :(
BigPapi Linden: and expanding them in shaders would bring even the most powerful graphics card to a HALT
Torley Linden: Thanks for the education, as depressing as that sounds!
Pastrami Linden: new presets will be more balanced
Tao Takashi: and there is no discussion in the opengl scene to maybe add more lights at some point?
Aki Shichiroji: personally, one face light isn't bad... but i've seen some people walking around thinking it necessary to wear 6-8 at once, which is ridiculous
Tao Takashi: I mean, gfx cards are improving all tht eim
Tao Takashi: the time
BigPapi Linden: Yeah, we should have never allowed more face lights to begin with. But that ship has sailed.
Summer Seale: hehe sorry torley but that's an adorable picture =)
Pastrami Linden: Drew Dzieciol: I understand that you can only see 6 local lights at a time, this isn't the same with Glow is it? Can you have unlimited objects glowing in a scene?
Daedalus Young: well maybe in 50 years we have realtime raytracing :)
Tao Takashi: earlier ;-)
Pastrami Linden: Drew, you can have as many as you want
BigPapi Linden: Drew, yes, unlimited.
Drew Dzieciol: ty
Pastrami Linden: it's all done in "screen space"
Pastrami Linden: meaning
Tao Takashi is a face glow proponent ;-)
Pastrami Linden: it doesn't factor in to nearby objects
Pastrami Linden: so you can have the whole scene glow if you want
Hypatia Callisto: hate glow, messes up the lighting in my builds :p
Pastrami Linden: lights are limited because with each add'l light, ALL objects are affected
Summer Seale: wb torley =)
Summer Seale: i love glow
Torley Linden: Pardon, crashed, am back, and thank-you Summer.
Hypatia Callisto: I mean face lights
Tao Takashi: it depends how you use glow I'd say ;-)
Hypatia Callisto: gah, my brain isnt working tonight
Tao Takashi: ah
Hypatia Callisto: not enough sleep
Torley Linden: I have to admit to local lighting abuse myself... I sometimes carry an invisible pillar with a pink + green light.
Summer Seale: np =)
Summer Seale: i love my face light system i made =)
Summer Seale: i do turn it off sometimes tho
Torley Linden: *wears it*
Summer Seale: ooh
Summer Seale: i love that
Summer Seale: Oh...my...God!
McCabe Maxsted: I would love to have local directional lights
Torley Linden: Like spotlights, McCabe?
McCabe Maxsted: yeah, exactly
Pastrami Linden: Torley you so dance the light fantastic
Pastrami Linden: Electric Delcon: Why is it that the linux first look clients can be loaded multiple times and the windows clients can only be loaded once? Is there any plans on making it possible for someone to run multiple instances of the client on Windows without building a hack for it?
Torley Linden: Haha I always like the word "fantastic" after other words.
Summer Seale: wow that is really nicely done
McCabe Maxsted: so I could put lights on a ceiling that won't affect the floor above, or bean off only one face like a flashlight
Torley Linden: Oh Electric, you CAN do that with a client parameter.
McCabe Maxsted: -multiple
Hypatia Callisto: ah, light occlusion :) that would be cool
Jeremy Linden: Electric, to run multiple instances of any Second Life client on windows, just use the -multiple parameter :-)
Torley Linden: What Jeremy and McCabe said! http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters
WidgetHUD v1.1: Torley Linden has pinged you.
Tao Takashi: and when will we get realistic rain with water drops splashing on the sea? :)
Hypatia Callisto: is it possible though, no idea
Tao Takashi: and puddles
BigPapi Linden: not anytime soon tao
Zen Linden: oh tao, you really want that water simulation
Electric Delcon: Oh great, thanks =)
Torley Linden: Fluid modeling is very computationally expensive, isn't it?
Tao Takashi: yes, I want big waves, too ;-)
Pastrami Linden: Torley, not as bad as yo umight think
Torley Linden: And by "very" I mean, "Hey, I wish I had time travel about now".
BigPapi Linden: yes torley, VERY
Pastrami Linden: as long as you do it client side
Pastrami Linden: and especially if you have a free core
Hypatia Callisto: hm... metaballish things arent too bad
Tao Takashi: soon we will all have 10 free cores at least
BigPapi Linden: pastrami, not for what he's talking about.
Pastrami Linden: generally speaking though, yes
Torley Linden: Thanks.
Torley Linden: Summer, those are great stars.
Summer Seale: thanks
Summer Seale: erm
Torley Linden: Tao, you've got stars on too!
Summer Seale: which stars?
Torley Linden: The ones on your leg, Summer.
Summer Seale: oh!
Summer Seale: thanks!
Tao Takashi: gfx card producers should add some water simulation chip
Summer Seale: i sell them
Tao Takashi: yes, I have stars forever ;-)
Summer Seale: sorry i'm like half here - ijust installed Leopard on my Mac <3 <3
Summer Seale: my macbook pro
Summer Seale: lol sorry
Pastrami Linden: Puma Jie: i have a question [13:35] Puma Jie: what type of graphics card [13:35] Puma Jie: is compatible with windlight? [13:35] Puma Jie: my computer is rather old [13:36] Puma Jie: and will windlight eventually replace the regular viewer? [13:36] Puma Jie: which means does my graphics card need updating :( [13:36] Puma Jie: haha
Pastrami Linden: Puma, WL is done on top of the old functionality, meaning, if you set your preferences to Low, you'll have "old school" rendering
Pastrami Linden: BUT
Pastrami Linden: if you want a new card-
Hypatia Callisto: Actually I worry a bit about many of the laptops, I keep seeing my friends with laptops, not even very old ones, having trouble even starting windlight.
Puma Jie: it's rather depressing
Pastrami Linden: Hypatia, those are compatibility bugs
Puma Jie: because i see all these amazing photos on flickr
Pastrami Linden: and do not reflect "phasing out"
Pastrami Linden: :)
Pastrami Linden: we'll get to them
Puma Jie: and what i see is square lights
Puma Jie: etc
Puma Jie: lol
Torley Linden: Fortunately too, the cost of technology gets cheaper and cheaper.
Puma Jie: ah
Pastrami Linden: Torley, do you know the link to the latest FPS stats
Pastrami Linden: so Puma may wisely choose his/her next card?
Torley Linden: Pastrami, sure do. Coming right up!
Tao Takashi: Hi Shukran
Torley Linden: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/11/15/typical-frame-rate-performance-by-graphics-cardgpu/
Tao Takashi: I need one of these! ;-)
Summer Seale: well there are some limits to playing games anyway. this game probably has the fewest limits of any game online i've seen or heard about (not that i know many games but i imagine others make you update quite a bit)
Pastrami Linden: thanks Torley
Torley Linden: NP.
Torley Linden: Thanx for tattoos, Summer. (*)
Summer Seale: np =)
Puma Jie: do i go to graphics detail to set my resolution to low?
Summer Seale: i actually used to hand them out as freebies all the time anyway. enjoy =)
Puma Jie: and thanks torley <3
Torley Linden: Puma, in WindLight, Preferences > Graphics tab, there's only 1 graphics tab now!
Torley Linden: You're welcome <3
Shukran Fahid: hey TAO long time
Torley Linden: ^_^
Tao Takashi: indeed, we should make parties or so
Puma Jie: hmm maybe i need to update windlight!
Shukran Fahid: or pasties
Tao Takashi: so we see our friends more often :)
Torley Linden: I really appreciate the work our WindLighters have put into improving usability and cleaning up old cruft.
Puma Jie: i have two
Summer Seale: oh i can't live without windlight now
Pastrami Linden: Aki Shichiroji: Regarding the compatability bugs, does that mean that the minimum requirements for running SL will not change significantly with the coming of WL to an actual release?
Shukran Fahid: windlight made my month LINDENS
Pastrami Linden: Aki that is correct
Summer Seale: when i had that photo bug 2 weeks ago, it was sheer hell to go back tot he old viewer for like 6 days
Torley Linden: Thanx Shuk!
McCabe Maxsted: Yes, the new preferences tab is a nice change; I always picked the wrong one in the old viewer
Aki Shichiroji: okie
Shukran Fahid: im literally bouncing about it...gawd that was bad
Torley Linden: Aki, you may also wish to see: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Windlight#Will_WindLight_make_the_System_Requirements_higher.3F
Torley Linden: But what Pastrami said essentially.
Pastrami Linden: Electric Delcon: That link for graphic card fps stats didn't have anything about SLI dual nvidias, how do these run the new client? (I'm thinking about getting one)
Sammy Grigges: i like your AV pastrami
Zen Linden: omg, sammy, you're like guy smiley
Pastrami Linden: Probably very well, though SLI is sometimes prone to more problems
Sammy Grigges: sup
Shukran Fahid: n8ice glowy head too btw tao
Sammy Grigges: torley i added you on your alt and you never accepted :O
Torley Linden: Do we even have SLI optimizations for Second Life? I think Runitai expressed interest in working on that awhile back?
Tao Takashi: it took me hours to craft it Shukran ;-)
Summer Seale: no SLI that i nkow of
Torley Linden: Sammy, sorry, I may've been flooded in blue popups!
Sammy Grigges: ok
Shukran Fahid: im sure it really happened by luck
Sammy Grigges: i forgive you sir
Puma Jie: hi cat <3
Tao Takashi: nah, it was planned days before ;-)
Electric Delcon: Does that mean I might be just as well off not getting SLI?
Shukran Fahid: tao:"glow? what does this do???"
Shukran Fahid: :D
Pastrami Linden: Electric, save our cash and get one fariyl good card
Pastrami Linden: :)
Tao Takashi: and then the research began
Pastrami Linden: then save that money for an upgrade in two years
Electric Delcon: Ok, thank you =)
Torley Linden: Bang for the buck.
Electric Delcon: good advice
Tao Takashi: so any great builds recently? :)
Torley Linden: Always good idea to check price-match sites online, and look @ places like http://dealnews.com
BigPapi Linden: Yeah, you're better off getting one single good card more frequently
Tao Takashi: maybe I should get a new one, too, mine is nearly 2 years old now ;-)
Torley Linden: http://newegg.com is often good but there are other choices too, depending where you are in the world (NCIX is good for Canada, I know that from personal experience).
Tao Takashi: (I think)
Torley Linden: Do your consumer research and reap the rewards!
Tweak Hax: my 8400 preforms jsut as good as my two 7600s in sli =/
Tao Takashi: I only buy what Torley has ;-)
Torley Linden: Also helps to read Ars Technica and other sites for impending price drops.
Torley Linden: ;-D
Zen Linden enjoys tom's hardware benchmark charts
Pastrami Linden: lol
Torley Linden: I like those big roundups they do of so many systems past and present, Zen.
Zen Linden: yeah, i love the giant graphs
Electric Delcon: Thanks for the tutorial on youtube Torley (showing the new client) I wouldn't have got it otherwise =)
Torley Linden: Oh you're welcome, Electric, I'm happy to have done it. Gotta share the joy.
Torley Linden: Thank *you* for watching!
Torley Linden: Anyone else have any questions? IM them to Pastrami Linden!
Pastrami Linden: Machiel Menges: Hello Pastrami. when wil the glow function on/off become in scripting. sorry for bad english.
Drew Dzieciol: Do you still use your pedal and steering wheel to move around Torley?
Tao Takashi cannot come up with another cool feature after big waves and rain
Zen Linden: Machiel
Machiel Menges: yes
Zen Linden: soon, but not before
Zen Linden: we merge into the main viewer
Torley Linden: Drew: On occasion, not a *lot* because my whole desk setup changed and it's more awkward, but I want to have more time in the future to experiment further.
Machiel Menges: ok. thx
Zen Linden: it's on the todo list and we're trying not to add new features till this is completely stable
Torley Linden: Yeah, right now we're really focused on polishing things and fixing the most critical issues.
Machiel Menges: i am looking forward to that function.
Torley Linden: (Context: the video Drew's referring to is http://youtube.com/watch?v=DMxUzGx4v7A )
Sammy Grigges: so wait what steps have you taken to improve stability
Torley Linden: Please IM questions to Pastrami Linden! =)
Pastrami Linden: McCabe Maxsted: McCabe Maxsted: This is somewhat off topic, but since I haven't been able to make it benjamin linden's office hours and he's not posting logs, is there word on any updates for the UI?
Torley Linden: Oh I know some of this... the new Search UI continues to be tweaked further, and as for Dazzle, that will go into First Look sometime after WindLight becomes RC I believe.
BigPapi Linden: Unless someone here *cough* *torley* *cough* knows about that project, you've unfortunately asked the wrong group.
Torley Linden: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Dazzle
McCabe Maxsted: I've been using dazzle for a while
Torley Linden: And I'll let Ben know you want to see logs too!
BigPapi Linden: Always bet on Torley! :)
Tao Takashi: I want to see them, too ;-)
Torley Linden: I'm glad you're an early adopter of that, McCabe.
Torley Linden: Awwwe.
Tao Takashi: because it's now usually quite late for me
Tao Takashi: when his office hours are on
McCabe Maxsted: but there's so much I want to do with the UI *gets all ui excited*
Pastrami Linden: Tweak Hax: did wind light ever get put into the main viewer?
McCabe Maxsted: yes, same tao
Torley Linden: Yeah, right now Dazzle is is a "patch it yourself" approach but Brent's adding new art to that, and we want a bigger release that more folks can try out.
Pastrami Linden: Its still in firstlook Tweak
Tweak Hax: =/
Pastrami Linden: then it goes to Release Candidate
McCabe Maxsted: tell ben to have his office hours earlier :)
Pastrami Linden: then Release
Pastrami Linden: Sammy Grigges: [13:47] Jeremy Linden: so wait what steps have you taken to improve stability
Pastrami Linden: TOrley, I almost feel you should post link to fixed issues
Pastrami Linden: ;)
Torley Linden: Yes, Sammy... have a look at this please:
Torley Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=10352
Torley Linden: "The big list of WindLight stuff we fixed", and in addition, in earlier blog posts Pastrami made, he detailed performance/stability improvements over the main viewerr.
McCabe Maxsted: I'm really glad you kept the classic cloud layer until the new ones are ready
Torley Linden: Aye McCabe, I know we had a lot of internal discussion about this months ago after hearing community feedback.
McCabe Maxsted: AYE!!!
Torley Linden: Flexibility of an option, so those who really don't want it can still nuke 'em.
Zen Linden: ARR!
Torley Linden: AVAST... SOMETHING OR OTHER!
Summer Seale: ye mangy dogs
Summer Seale: hehe
Torley Linden: Have you ever seen a dog with mange? GROSS.
Summer Seale: ya
Zen Linden: look alive mateys we have eight minutes left
Summer Seale: i know! poor things
Tweak Hax: wheres teh scedual for these press confrence things posted lol
Torley Linden: :( It's very sad, they sometimes get mistaken for other animals or cryptozoological creatures.
Summer Seale: i'll show you something after the meeting if you set your suns to midnight
Shukran Fahid: i sent pastrami a ??? and he or she hasnt gotten back to me...waaa waaa
Torley Linden: Tweak, the schedule's @ http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Windlight and Pastrami posts reminders in his blog posts @ http://blog.secondlife.com
Summer Seale: btw
Summer Seale: seriously
Torley Linden: If you have suggestions for where else we should publicize WindLight Office Hours, please say so!
Summer Seale: i can't thank you guys enough for windlight. it truly is gorgeously beautiful.
Shukran Fahid: Thank You!
Tao Takashi: indeed, it's great!
Pastrami Linden: Welody Lyne: Where did u get your av?;)
McCabe Maxsted: srsly
Summer Seale: i know there are bugs and stuff but...it's beautiful
Pastrami Linden: Weoldy you mean me?
Torley Linden: Summer, thanks so much for using it and coming here... I can't speak for everyone but I think it's really touching that you tell us this, and I mean that in an earnest, profound, non-cheesy way.
Tao Takashi: now HTML on a prim or at least on a parcel and everything is fine and I can wait for those big waves then ;-)
Summer Seale: hehe ya it's okay
McCabe Maxsted: this is my happy frolicking windlight av
Torley Linden: Helps to know our work made a positive difference!
Summer Seale: definitely
Time Minder: You have been online for 2 hours.
Torley Linden: Tao, I saw an internal demo of that the other day. ;) It's still in the works.
Tao Takashi: I wonder if it attracts more gamer types now
Tao Takashi: you should develop more openly IMHO ;-)
Pastrami Linden: Eduardo Falken: I have read the Windlight soruce code and found Post Process effects, with NightVision, Bloom Effect and filters editable via UI, when I activated it didnt work. When will that be done?
Pastrami Linden: take it away, BigPapi
Summer Seale: you knwo what it reminds me of? when i first started using Bryce3D somebody bought for me in like 1999...i was making pictures of rainbows and stuff and unicorns and it sort of taught me computers. but the water adn the glow and stuff...really brings it all back to something magical.
Torley Linden: We've certainly had dedicated gamers who say SL looks less craptastic and more like what they expect from quality entertainment — some of our WindLight Team have a LOT of experience with games & gaming.
BigPapi Linden: eduardo:
Torley Linden: (Summer, I was hooked on Bryce3D and early VRML... I feel ya!)
Tao Takashi: I also need to show e..g. the abyss to some gamer.. it looks more like a game
Summer Seale: totally
Tao Takashi: and it also depends on good 3d artists of course
BigPapi Linden: The post process special effects were removed in order to focus on windlight for this release.
BigPapi Linden: They'll come back at some point.
Shukran Fahid: amen
Tao Takashi: so probably you cannot expect from everybody to create quality buildings but that#s also not the goal
Torley Linden: Very observant of you, Eduardo.
Pastrami Linden: Shukran Fahid: did we discuss weather some sounds likeflight r missing from windL
Pastrami Linden: Shukran,
Shukran Fahid: Thank You! pastrami on whole meal
Pastrami Linden: I believe that's a problem from early 1.18.6
Summer Seale: phone sighs
BigPapi Linden: I added the originals: glow (which Runitai did as well), night vision, and general photoshop like color filters.
Pastrami Linden: look to the next release to fix that
Shukran Fahid: Thank You!
BigPapi Linden: But windlight was more important. so we put them on hold for the time being.
BigPapi Linden: Yeah, you have some eagle eyes eduardo
Torley Linden: I love those realtime FX BigPapi. Used to have a good friend in SL, she left, but she talked about having wanting pixel shaders affecting the world...
Tao Takashi: add some cartoon filter :)
Eduardo Falken: Ok, but special effects would be awesome.
Torley Linden: especially a "Scanner Darkly" one, or what Tao said.
Tao Takashi: and some Habbo Hotel filter ;-)
Zen Linden: torley, there is one, just turn on catalyst AI :)
McCabe Maxsted: cell shading in sl would be something else
Summer Seale: oh
Torley Linden: I've been tripped out setting RenderGlowMinLuminance to 0 and then walking around, it looks like a dreeeeam... oh sadly Zen I'm on ATI!
Summer Seale: that's not a poofer
Daedalus Young: isometric camera setting would be cool yes
Pastrami Linden: what would a Habbo Hotel one look like?
Steven Otoro: is voice working over here
Torley Linden: Er, NVIDIA!
Zen Linden: j/k
Steven Otoro: i cnat hear anyone
Steven Otoro: cant*
Aki Shichiroji: Steven we are not voicing.
BigPapi Linden: nobody is talking, we're doing this over text chat
Torley Linden: Daedalus, I think that's somewhat accomplishable with FollowCam but those scripting calls aren't widely understood.
BigPapi Linden: so we can log the office hours and post them for others
Shukran Fahid: typing is like drinking a hot coffee
Tao Takashi: I need to checkout more debug settings it seems :)
Daedalus Young: never true isometric though :P
Tao Takashi: is it possible to set glow by LSL right now, btw?
Shukran Fahid: it slows the whole experience down
Torley Linden: I love seeing accelerated day cycles in WindLight and playing Philip Glass to it, a la Koyaanisqatsi. Anyone who loves beautiful nature and human civilization should watch that movie.
Aki Shichiroji: Shukran> not always a bad thing.
Tao Takashi: I have it
Torley Linden: Hehe Daed, I'm reminded of the Royksopp "Remind Me" video, have you seen that?
Ken Glume: is it possible that they'll put out a better client for MAC'
Zen Linden: tao: no, but soon. As I said before, we're trying not to add any new features just yet
Daedalus Young: I think I have yes, but will check it on youtube
Tao Takashi: ic, cool
Pastrami Linden: well, my queueueueue is empty
Summer Seale: \o/
Torley Linden: Wow, lots of great avatars with us here today.
Zen Linden: and i need to run
Zen Linden: later y'all
Summer Seale: ok =)
Aki Shichiroji: Thanks for the office ours :)
Daedalus Young: bye Zen, happy holidays
Torley Linden: Hypatia, I'm so used to thinking of you with a mouse tail coming out of your mouth.
Aki Shichiroji: *hours
Shukran Fahid: byeeeee
Torley Linden: T'care Zen!
Summer Seale: do i get to poof now?
Jeremy Linden: I've got to hop out as well... it's a busy day!
Machiel Menges: bye Zen
Ken Glume: I win for awesomeness
Daedalus Young: happy holidays to you too then Jeremy
WidgetHUD v1.1: Daedalus Young has pinged you.
Torley Linden: FULL OF WIN is one of my fave sayings.
Second Life: Your object 'YEP! Black Leather Stool by Xen. - NO Copy' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder by Governor Linden from parcel 'Brampton Linden Stage' at Brampton 105.249, 152.699 due to parcel auto return.
Tao Takashi: and I wonder if it will be possible to set the debug options e.g. for glow at some point for an estate :)
Jeremy Linden: Happy holidays, all! Don't forget Documentation Office Hours on Fridays at 2pm! ;-)
Torley Linden: Tao, hmmm you know that would be fun, someone comes into your region and you end up in some surreal afterlife.
Tao Takashi: indeed
Tao Takashi: that would add great to some estate wide windlight settings
Ken Glume: I want a pony
Torley Linden: And Documentation-related, the Knowledge Base Article of the Week was just posted to the blog too!
Tao Takashi: maybe even more stuff could be handled like that, not sure what is theoretically adjustable
Summer Seale: ya i do too
Tao Takashi: maybe even more stuff could be handled like that, not sure what is theoretically adjustable
Summer Seale: ya i do too
Torley Linden: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/12/20/knowledge-base-article-of-the-week-getting-some-me-you-time/
Summer Seale: i feel like lisa simpson
Torley Linden: Haha, I dig these titles.
Summer Seale: ok
Torley Linden: Your Undo one was so darn catchy Jeremy.
Pastrami Linden: Drew Dzieciol: is it possible to use this Dazzle http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Dazzle with WIndlight viewer right now?
Torley Linden: *watches Summer*
Pastrami Linden: sorry Drew, missed that
Summer Seale: ok but only quickly
Summer Seale: cuz it's very very bright
Summer Seale: and zoom out
Summer Seale: 1 on
Daedalus Young: well I'm off too, see you all later and have a merry Christmas :)
Summer Seale: my supernova and slow nova
Shukran Fahid: umm particles?
Summer Seale: merry christmas *grins*
Sosisko Frog: hello
Tao Takashi: ok, particles and glow is also nice :)
Summer Seale: but see!
Torley Linden: VERY NICE!
Sosisko Frog: oh :O
Summer Seale: pink and green!
Torley Linden: My eeeeyes!
Torley Linden: :D
Aki Shichiroji dies of epileptic seizure.
Summer Seale: thank you <3
Torley Linden: I doth like that!
Daedalus Young: bye all!
Eduardo Falken: yes particles with glow would be nice
Shukran Fahid dies of seizure as well
Sosisko Frog: what is it?:O
Summer Seale: lol
Summer Seale: it's my particles i make and sell
Torley Linden: Thanx for showing that off, Summer, wowza. I like all the custom particle textures.
Sosisko Frog: :O
Summer Seale: i gave out the slow nova one as a christmas prezsent
Ken Glume: particles make me hate life
Summer Seale: thanks =)
Torley Linden: All too often, I see particles without textures where additional detail would befit them.
Summer Seale: i love good particles
Summer Seale: ya
BigPapi Linden: If particles ever get glow added you would only be able to choose between glow OR transparency
Tao Takashi: and renderglowresolutionPow=1 looks interesting :)
Summer Seale: sometimes the ones without texures are good if done nicely tho
BigPapi Linden: So keep that in mind for now.
Pastrami Linden: anyone have an answer to that Dazzle question?
BigPapi Linden: You could only have square shapped particles that glow.
Summer Seale: i'd probably go for glow
Summer Seale: you can always reduce size to makethem fade
Torley Linden: Oh and Drew, answer is YES it should be.
Ken Glume: I just want a better Mac' Client
Pastrami Linden: alright all, with that I leave thee
Sosisko Frog: whatta..
Torley Linden: If it doesn't work Drew, email me, torley at lindenlab dot com, I work with Dazzle Team on communication & stuff and will let them know.
Torley Linden: Thx for the heads-up and for human-firewalling, Pastrami!
Torley Linden: Take care everyone and see you next time!
Torley Linden: It's been fun!
Drew Dzieciol: ok ty
Torley Linden: W00t thanx for da Slow Nova, Summer!
Torley Linden: Bai bai 4 nao!
Torley Linden: Rock on Team WindLight.
Machiel Menges: bye bye lindens
