Agenda

Updates

  • Second Life Server Channel
    • Magnum got promoted this week.
  • Features
  • New LSL function integer llSetRegionPos(vector position)
The object with the script will move the root prim position to the given location. The position is any position within the region. If the position is below ground, it will be set to the ground level at that X,Y spot. The function has no delay or throttle.
    • Returns 1 if the object is successfully placed within 0.1 m of position.
    • Returns 0 and does not move the object if position is more than 10m off region or above 4096m.
    • Returns 0 and does not move the object if the object is dynamic (has physics enabled).
    • Returns 0 and does not move the object if the object can not move to position due to object entry rules, prim limits, bans, etc.
  • "frame_number" option added to llGetEnv()
Returns an integer that represents the current 'frame' of the simulator. Generally only useful for specific debugging cases.
  • Bug Fixes
    • SVC-7466 A notecard holds more data than a script can read
    • SVC-7520 Keyframe motion doesn't move towards the correct position when specified time is not an exact multiple of 1/45 seconds
    • SVC-7485 llSetKeyframedMotion cannot stop animation if none is running ... sounds less important than it is ...
    • SVC-7493 Weird mesh land impact issue
    • Fixed several simulator crash bugs and potential memory leaks.
    • Fixed a notecard crashing bug.
    • SVC-7613 Greatly increased network activity since the 1/18/12 RC channel rolling restart
    • SVC-7608 Sims are not visible when diagonally opposed. (this was not a simulator-side fix, but the bug was originally visible only in the previous iteration of this project)

  • llGiveInventory() caps.

  • [15:10] Oskar Linden: so a round of applause
  • [15:10] Homeless: clap clap clap
  • [15:10] Marigold Devin: ★(`'·.¸:•.•:*¨*☆•☆*¨¨*:•.•:¸.·'´)★
  • [15:10] Marigold Devin: ♬♬♬,.-:* APPLAUSE *:-.,♬♬♬

  • [15:10] Sera Lok: yayy^^^
  • [15:10] Sigma Avro: clap *25
  • [15:10] Oskar Linden: so there was that ghosting issue in the RC's last week
  • [15:10] Lucia Nightfire: big time
  • [15:10] Lucia Nightfire: I got stuck thrice....
  • [15:11] Marigold Devin: ditto - it were great
  • [15:11] Oskar Linden: Carmilla fixed that bug, but when it came time to test the merge with Magnum there was a new sim crashing issue found
  • [15:11] Oskar Linden: we didn't have time to fix and retest
  • [15:11] Oskar Linden: so we pulled the code entirely
  • [15:11] Oskar Linden: this of course fixed the ghosting issue
  • [15:11] Homeless: one step forward two steps back as usual lol
  • [15:11] Dr4g0n Tyran: tem brasileiro aqui
  • [15:11] Marigold Devin: Can't make omelette without breaking eggs
  • [15:11] Oskar Linden: luckily we have 4 legs
  • [15:12] Sigma Avro: 4 eggs ?
  • [15:12] Oskar Linden: :-)
  • [15:12] Oskar Linden: we pushed Kelly's other project to each RC
  • [15:12] Rex Cronon: back
  • [15:12] Oskar Linden: this was the project we attempted to release 2 weeks ago but there was a crasher in llList2List
  • [15:12] Oskar Linden: it seems to be stable so far
  • [15:13] Oskar Linden: there is a nice list of sped up functions
  • [15:13] Oskar Linden: llList2List
llDeleteSubList
llGetListEntryType
llListInsertList
llListFindList
llListReplaceList
llDeleteSubString
llStringLength
llInsertString
llSubStringIndex
  • [15:13] Oskar Linden: has anyone tested the speed differences?
  • [15:13] Sigma Avro: oh, not yet, this is a pity
  • [15:13] Oskar Linden: yeah
  • [15:13] Rex Cronon: in order to test that we would need values from previous version
  • [15:14] Oskar Linden: check it out
  • [15:14] Oskar Linden: main channel is your baseline
  • [15:14] Oskar Linden: does anyone have any questions about the improved LSL functions for Kelly while he is here?
  • [15:14] Rex Cronon: i thought that they were part of tehmain channel already
  • [15:15] Kelly Linden: nope. just on RCs right now.
  • [15:15] Lucia Nightfire: what were the inefficencies of teh prior code?
  • [15:15] Motor Loon: speed
  • [15:16] Lucia Nightfire: I know that, but why specifically was speed hampered
  • [15:16] Oskar Linden: what?
  • [15:16] Oskar Linden: speed wasn't intentionally hampered
  • [15:16] Oskar Linden: Kelly just codes better with time :-)
  • [15:17] Motor Loon: wisdom comes with the grey hairs
  • [15:17] Sigma Avro: list operations have indeed not good fame in lsl
  • [15:17] Kelly Linden: Inneficiencies were two fold: the list had to be passed from mono to C++ which is a pita by itself, and in C++ it is a singly linked list while in mono it is an ArrayList - many of the operations are O(1) (or close) in mono but O(n) (or worse) in c++
  • [15:17] Sigma Avro: good to see imporved
  • [15:18] Oskar Linden: well poke around with the functions this weekend and maybe start a discussion about it in the forums
  • [15:18] Lucia Nightfire: I'll have to get out my list appending testers to check speed and memory efficiency
  • [15:18] Chieron Tenk: I have a question.. I ran into llDialog throttles this week, which I never did before, but It isn't easy to find the actual values for this.. So, what are they? One can run into them with 2 objects opening dialogs, but thats it.
  • [15:18] Oskar Linden: if anyone finds what could be considered a blocker for promotion next week file a jira and then let me know
  • [15:19] Oskar Linden: we're getting to the throttling question soo Chieron
  • [15:19] Sigma Avro: entries of lsl treat list as arrays. Should there be new functions woith c++ imoplementation ?
  • [15:19] Maestro Linden: Chieron, see kelly's comments in SVC-7631
  • [15:19] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7631] New rate throttle on llGiveInventory https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7631
  • [15:19] Maestro Linden: he laid it out there
  • [15:19] Kelly Linden: Chieron is talking about a different throttle
  • [15:19] Jonathan Yap: His question was about Dialog throttles
  • [15:19] Maestro Linden: oh
  • [15:19] MartinRJ Fayray: we're talking about llDialog, not llGiveInventory
  • [15:19] Maestro Linden: oops
  • [15:19] Chieron Tenk: its llDialog nt llGiveInventory, yes
  • [15:19] Oskar Linden: my bad
  • [15:19] Kelly Linden: llDialog is throttled by target (not object owner or object)
  • [15:20] Maestro Linden: the concern is that if you send too many dialogs to an avatar, it can be used to slow down / crash their viewer, right?
  • [15:20] Chieron Tenk: meaning one will produce script errors if different objects of different users start dialogs?
  • [15:21] Jonathan Yap: Also, in the past, there was no Block button
  • [15:21] Kelly Linden: Yeah maestro
  • [15:21] Sigma Avro: with the one second delay, a crash ?
  • [15:21] Rex Cronon: in the older viewer u were stuck having to close all of them
  • [15:21] Leonel Iceghost: but that is a bug in the viewer, because you can render thousand of other updates without slowing down or crashes
  • [15:22] Lucia Nightfire: I've onyl seen script errors for overall dialog function use in the area, ie too many in use
  • [15:22] Chieron Tenk: I ran into dialog griefers before, never experienced more than a nuisance (vwr1).
  • [15:22] Jonathan Yap: Leonel, I can halt you viewer by sending large blocks of group chat
  • [15:23] Leonel Iceghost: Jonathan, a pop-up doesn't have as much as text as large blocks of group chat
  • [15:23] Oskar Linden: well if no one has anything else related to the RC's we can chat about the llgiveinventory() caps
  • [15:23] Leonel Iceghost: nor does it store them in the HD, nor maintains a history
  • [15:23] Oskar Linden: or we can just all read https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7631?focusedCommentId=308836&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-308836
  • [15:24] Rex Cronon: the new "fix" to giveinventory make a very intresting subject:)
  • [15:24] Oskar Linden: Kelly outlines the listed throttle rates in that comment
  • [15:24] Chieron Tenk: here, it was my own dialogs getting throttled (accidentally didnt deactivate listeners too late, some objects close to each other for set up purposes).. I think, it should not trigger for dialogs of the owner
  • [15:25] Oskar Linden: we're open to modifying the throttles to be more reasonable if the rates set aren't working well
  • [15:26] Homeless: what give inventory applications send out so many?
  • [15:26] Jonathan Yap: Store notices, updates, club events
  • [15:26] Homeless: or is it mainly a greifing issue?
  • [15:26] Chieron Tenk: @ homeless: notecard/updaters probably
  • [15:26] Rex Cronon: u need to be able to send to at least 100 users/objects in one seconds, and no blocking for next 30 to 60 minutes
  • [15:26] Kelly Linden: That will not be possible Rex.
  • [15:27] Johan Laurasia: Wishful thinking there rex
  • [15:27] Homeless: anything to throttle spam is good
  • [15:27] Rex Cronon: that is not spam homeless
  • [15:27] Homeless: that is to me
  • [15:27] Leonel Iceghost: is the throtle for giving in the current sim too? if so can it be only for inter-sim inventory giving?
  • [15:27] Rex Cronon: people r using it to send updates of their products
  • [15:27] Johan Laurasia: no, but that ability gives others the tool to spam with
  • [15:27] Kallista Destiny: Homeless, that is a crock, The best way to stop spam is to disable all communications.
  • [15:28] Kelly Linden: It is for object to agent giving
  • [15:28] Homeless: true but you can't stop me from hating it
  • [15:28] Kelly Linden: But not llGiveInventoryList (which is restricted to same-sim)
  • [15:28] Rex Cronon: so there is no delay when one object gives to another object?
  • [15:28] Kelly Linden: There is no cap or throttle on that Rex.
  • [15:29] MartinRJ Fayray: does the new throttle also apply for magic boxes (marketplace) ??
  • [15:29] Rex Cronon: i am curious how is somebody supposed to send updates to over 1000 users/
  • [15:29] Rex Cronon: ?
  • [15:29] Kallista Destiny: That was sarcasim for the humor impaired.
  • [15:30] Johan Laurasia: perhaps some web based solution Rex
  • [15:30] Rex Cronon: do u have to make multiple alts and have scripts from each of them doing in parallel?
  • [15:30] Johan Laurasia: farm out the work to an external server, take the load off of SL
  • [15:30] Leonel Iceghost: make a bot
  • [15:30] Jonathan Yap: Use the new Direct Delivery system
  • [15:31] Rex Cronon: how can an external server send objects to sl users?
  • [15:31] Kallista Destiny: No just have your mailing list sender owned by different alts
  • [15:31] Kallista Destiny: Let's call in listserv... :(
  • [15:32] Homeless: One thing that happens to me is my name gets recorded when I enter a place, and I get bombed later
  • [15:32] Jonathan Yap: That's what the Block button is for
  • [15:32] Marigold Devin: Where the heck are you going, Homeless? I never get spammed with stuff unless I click for it.
  • [15:32] Oskar Linden: well, we'll keep an eye on the exact throttle numbers and might have them tweaked in an RC
  • [15:32] Marigold Devin: sorry. a bit off topic
  • [15:32] Oskar Linden: homeless and marigod should hang out
  • [15:32] Oskar Linden: you can go ghost hunting together
  • [15:32] Homeless: lol
  • [15:32] Marigold Devin: Homeless should start a thread on the forums and discuss this one.
  • [15:33] Oskar Linden: this is going to be a boring weeked for you MGD without your ghosts
  • [15:33] Kallista Destiny: Yeah, and AR the offenders also
  • [15:33] Marigold Devin: There aren't any ghosts ;P
  • [15:33] Oskar Linden: alright.
  • [15:33] Marigold Devin: Never boring. Always got something to do, someone to kill ^^
  • [15:33] Homeless: SL is never boring thats for sure
  • [15:33] Oskar Linden: ok. we could discuss SVC-7645 if people want
  • [15:33] Flame of Jira: [#SVC-7645] CoarseLocationUpdate message needs to be reverted or changed https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7645
  • [15:33] Marigold Devin: Its valentines, I have cards to send out to all my objects of desire.
  • [15:34] Oskar Linden: hopefully with the new throttles this year I won't have my vwr crash on Valentines Day
  • [15:34] Oskar Linden: :-D
  • [15:34] Homeless: uhoh.. that sounds like a grid crasher
  • [15:34] Oskar Linden: not a grid crasher
  • [15:35] Kallista Destiny: The argument presented that an altitude of 0-4 is almost never seen where as 1020+_2 may bee seend
  • [15:35] Oskar Linden: has to do with latitude
  • [15:35] Oskar Linden: Simon isn't here to answer your questions
  • [15:35] Oskar Linden: but I am sure that Maestro can act as intermediary
  • [15:36] Jonathan Yap: Whichever the number is the viewer still has to work around it, for legacy viewers it makes a bit more sense to have 1020
  • [15:36] Maestro Linden: Well, with the new viewer and server changes, you'll never see that >1020m avatars are below you
  • [15:36] Maestro Linden: 1020 is a closer approximation than 0, yes
  • [15:37] Maestro Linden: Ideally, we probably need a new message type with more than 8 bits of information for the z-coordinate
  • [15:37] Leonel Iceghost: 4096 / 256 = 16 ... why don't you just change the resolution to show good results to any altitude.. and you can keep your "up to 256 number"
  • [15:37] Jonathan Yap: The LL viewer is about to catch up with the TPVs and also make use of the nearby character data
  • [15:37] Maestro Linden: so that you could cover 0-4096m (or more?) with reasonable resolution
  • [15:37] Jonathan Yap: for better Z height data.
  • [15:37] Leonel Iceghost: 16 metters is good enought
  • [15:37] Leonel Iceghost: enough
  • [15:38] Lucia Nightfire: yes, teh main map uses 16 meter increments as well
  • [15:38] Jonathan Yap: Leonel, that would immediatley break all existing viewers
  • [15:38] Kallista Destiny: That would involve a new record type
  • [15:38] Leonel Iceghost: so update the viewers...
  • [15:38] Kallista Destiny: Pfffft
  • [15:38] Leonel Iceghost: it is the same number.. they won't break
  • [15:39] Jonathan Yap: You mean force everyone to update their viewer on a given day? That is not very practical
  • [15:39] Leonel Iceghost: they will show a bad altitude just
  • [15:39] Kallista Destiny: Used to be....
  • [15:39] Jonathan Yap: The days of grid shutdowns and mandatory viewer updates are over, now we have to live with existing protocos
  • [15:39] Leonel Iceghost: they won't break, no need to update all the world in a given day
  • [15:39] Jonathan Yap: *protocols
  • [15:39] Leonel Iceghost: it is not a change of protocol, same protocol different interpretation
  • [15:39] Rex Cronon: i am sorry to say but trying to login and being told you have to download and install a new viewer $UCK$ big time:(
  • [15:40] Jonathan Yap: Leonel, you will see yourself at 4000m and I would see you at 500m, or something silly like that
  • [15:40] Oskar Linden: we could just have new vwrs every day
  • [15:40] Leonel Iceghost: you won't have to download anything, nothing would break, just as nothing breaks when you don't see alpha layers
  • [15:40] Oskar Linden: then you would have to download a new vwr every login
  • [15:40] Johan Laurasia: lol
  • [15:40] Jonathan Yap: If you wish I will make you a custom viewer with all your heights multiplied higher :)
  • [15:40] Rex Cronon: u so funny oskar:)
  • [15:40] Johan Laurasia: viewer a day
  • [15:40] Johan Laurasia: keeps the crashes away
  • [15:41] Johan Laurasia: and the coders busy
  • [15:41] Homeless: I think concurrency would drop a bit if we had to so that
  • [15:41] Oskar Linden: so maestro. anything new coming up?
  • [15:41] Homeless: *do
  • [15:41] Sigma Avro: lol Johan, is that a chocolate advertizement ?
  • [15:41] Oskar Linden: we gonna get that updated region crossing code next week?
  • [15:41] Maestro Linden: Oh, we're planning to put that region crossing thing into RC next week, if all the fixes work
  • [15:42] Maestro Linden: and Caleb has indicated that they are working
  • [15:42] Theresa Tennyson: Could you briefly explain what happened?
  • [15:42] Oskar Linden: birefly
  • [15:42] Oskar Linden: yes
  • [15:42] Oskar Linden: it broke
  • [15:42] Maestro Linden: There was a bug in which avatars would have stuck presence, Theresa
  • [15:42] Kallista Destiny: lol
  • [15:42] Oskar Linden: I am the briefest!
  • [15:42] Theresa Tennyson: Gotcha.
  • [15:42] Maestro Linden: meaning that people would get 'ghosted' in sims and be unable to login
  • [15:42] Kallista Destiny: a little too brief
  • [15:43] Maestro Linden: we had a fix for it which almost went into RC last week, but then we found a last minute sim crasher
  • [15:43] Maestro Linden: so we aborted that deploy
  • [15:43] Maestro Linden: but now the crasher should be fixed
  • [15:43] Oskar Linden: cool.
  • [15:43] Jonathan Yap: That would be interesting if you could be logged in more than once
  • [15:43] Maestro Linden: as well as the agent presence bug
  • [15:43] Oskar Linden: the threaded region crossing code will be good to get out
  • [15:44] Sigma Avro: brrr, crossing by pieces ?
  • [15:44] Oskar Linden: then we can get carmilla back here to discuss again
  • [15:44] Lucia Nightfire: has anyone foudn anythign out with SCR-243?
  • [15:44] Flame of Jira: [#SCR-243] llCastRay returns RCERR_CAST_TIME_EXCEEDED until the sim is rebooted https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SCR-243
  • [15:44] Lucia Nightfire: after 5-6 days of a sim being up, castray from attachment fails for everyone
  • [15:45] Lucia Nightfire: until a restart
  • [15:45] Oskar Linden: has falcon looked into that maestro?
  • [15:45] Sigma Avro: it is like a punishment, lol
  • [15:46] Oskar Linden: no. if we decided to punish people it would be a LOT worse
  • [15:47] Sigma Avro: arg ! I did not ask for that function !
  • [15:47] Kallista Destiny: omuch for llCastRay as a replacement for projectiles
  • [15:47] Marigold Devin: It'd have to be a lot worse with the number of masochists in SL
  • [15:47] Maestro Linden: No, unfortunately I haven't heard much on the SCR-243 front
  • [15:48] Leonel Iceghost: good luck I didn't update my scripts to use that
  • [15:48] Leonel Iceghost: I would never discover the reason it didn't work
  • [15:48] Sigma Avro: I like classic projectiles
  • [15:48] Rex Cronon: your lazers no longer hit anything:)
  • [15:49] Sigma Avro: rather than chirurgical strikes
  • [15:49] Sigma Avro: well, mater of taste
  • [15:49] Lucia Nightfire: I have it as an option in a security HUD where the user can alt cam soemone and click the HUD for a list of moderation options, but after teh 5 or 6th day they have to resort to chat based commands
  • [15:49] Kallista Destiny: All your base belong us.
  • [15:49] Oskar Linden: interesting
  • [15:50] Leonel Iceghost: nice idea Lucia
  • [15:50] Lucia Nightfire: yeah, its areally a pain when servers don't get restarted too, lol
  • [15:50] Lucia Nightfire: then its 9 or more days like that
  • [15:51] 380Grey Hood: Hello, Avatar!
  • [15:51] Sigma Avro: yes, not enough roll restatrst anymore, hehe
  • [15:52] Oskar Linden: so what else do we have to chat about?
  • [15:52] Oskar Linden: 8 minutes left
  • [15:52] Leonel Iceghost: we want to use direct delivery from scripts
  • [15:52] Sigma Avro: frame numbver option ?
  • [15:53] Homeless: when is direct delivery going live?
  • [15:53] Maestro Linden: I believe there's a server update that has to go through the RC process
