- Go through it and offer suggestions to me.
Post Meeting Pile-On
- We'd like to do another region stress test after today's office hours (3-4 pm, PST). This helps us look at memory usage of a busy region, and hopefully provide another clue as we track down some of the problems we've seen. We got great data doing this two weeks ago and would like to repeat the test with some new tools.
- It's important that we can accurately compare the region after the test with the situation before. This means any objects that you rez must be cleaned up and deleted. Please only rez temp objects or things that you can easily find and clean up when we're done.
- We'll play around for 5 minutes or so, watch the memory usage and performance, then ask for everyone to clean up.
- Teleport away and back to Morris
- Cross into adjacent regions and come back
- Rez some objects that you can clean up later
- Do friendly things with animations, sounds, etc.
- Change outfits
- Add and remove attachments
Any other business

- [15:09] Oskar Linden: that was for inventory?
- [15:10] RedMokum Bravin: Yes it was for inventory and no, I didn't write it down yet.
- [15:10] Maestro Linden: Ah RedMokum, that's been an issue since.. 1.36? I can look for the Jira #, but I'm sure others here have it memorized..
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: is that the vwr 2 thing?
- [15:10] Maestro Linden: that's the pre-viewer-2 thing
- [15:10] Talisien Llewellyn: There's already a long standing Jira about there not being Accepted or Declined notices for inventory. I don't remember the # off the top of my head though.
- [15:10] RedMokum Bravin: Yes Maestro, but we were asked to look if it had cleared up now.
- [15:10] Maestro Linden: ah I see
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: that was explained as expected behavior (now) as a security precaution (andrew's OH)
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: no I asked you to look at something else I think
- [15:11] Gooden Uggla: talk to simon
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: friendship requests

- [15:14] Flynn Tigerpaw: well it's here
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: who changed the water height?
- [15:15] Ovaltine Constantine: Wasn't me

- [15:20] Oskar Linden: that's unrelated Rex, but thanks
- [15:20] Ellla McMahon: THere was this report today re Tully high [6] I couldn't repro anything major but there were regular dips showing Stats Bar.
- [15:20] [[User:JIRA-helper: [#SVC-6321|JIRA-helper: [#SVC-6321]]:

- [15:21] Oskar Linden: tully high is blue steel
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: but you don't know anything more than wonkiness?
- [15:21] Lares Carter: i couldnt find any new bugs in blue steel
- [15:21] Ellla McMahon: just general (could be anything!!) comments on the JIRA
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: ok
- [15:22] Simon Linden: that bug report looks tough ... seems like it was acting bad for a while, but not reproducible
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: thanks to drew and ella for the comments
- [15:23] Maestro Linden: indeed
- [15:23] Gooden Uggla: if it was filed yesterday, could have been part of the system problems all over the grid
- [15:23] Maestro Linden: "no radio streams" makes me wonder.. maybe they were having internet issues on their end?
- [15:23] Gooden Uggla: rough day yesterday...
- [15:23] Moon Metty: looks a bit like the old svc-4169
- [15:23] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4169:
- [#SVC-4169] groups, teleportation: issues, inventory issues, can't pay group deeded items

- [#svc-4169]
- [15:23] Eddi Decosta: well, i i get some trouble with the tp
- [15:24] Ellla McMahon: yes Moon very similar :) Comment from reporter "effecting 10% of Avatars" If it was the new Server version wouldn't it affect everyone ??
- [15:24] Sigma Avro: when calling IM the group ususlaly it starts back
- [15:25] Simon Linden: That might end up being "top 10% of script users" or something similar ... those with big attachments, for example
- [15:26] Sigma Avro: (not for tp part of course)
- [15:26] Rex Cronon: .
- [15:27] Rickk Turbo: ..
- [15:27] Rickk Turbo: chat lag?
- [15:27] Sigma Avro: no
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: chat lag?
- [15:27] Simon Linden: So at the end of office hours, I'd like to run another stress test
- [15:27] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: could be
- [15:27] Rex Cronon: got so silent. i thought i got disconnected:)
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: I wrote down simons rules in the agenda
- [15:27] Simon Linden: I sent an email about, but here's the basics:
- [15:27] Rickk Turbo: me too
- [15:27] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: sorry simon, ill not be joining this time :p\
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: [7]
- [15:28] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: my laptop isnt that strong at all :p
- [15:28] Simon Linden: right, what Oskar's saying :)
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: seems straightforward
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: I can cut and paste :-p
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: We'd like to do another region stress test after today's office hours (3-4 pm, PST). This helps us look at memory usage of a busy region, and hopefully provide another clue as we track down some of the problems we've seen. We got great data doing this two weeks ago and would like to repeat the test with some new tools.
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: It's important that we can accurately compare the region after the test with the situation before. This means any objects that you rez must be cleaned up and deleted. Please only rez temp objects or things that you can easily find and clean up when we're done.
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: We'll play around for 5 minutes or so, watch the memory usage and performance, then ask for everyone to clean up.
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: Things to do/try:
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: * Teleport away and back to Morris
- * Cross into adjacent regions and come back
- * Rez some objects that you can clean up later
- * Do friendly things with animations, sounds, etc.
- * Change outfits
- * Add and remove attachments
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: so everyone make a note of that
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: and at 4 we'll do that
- [15:29] Marigold Devin: "friendly things"
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: the regions are set and ready to go right simon?
- [15:29] Marigold Devin: no killing each other then
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: the region I mean
- [15:30] Simon Linden: yes, we're already grabbing data
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: cool
- [15:30] Sigma Avro: we are 30
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: so be nice to this region til 4
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: so we get a baseline
- [15:31] Rex Cronon: r we supposed to cross in a vehicle?
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: then go nuts/4
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: 25% nuts
- [15:31] Sigma Avro: good wy to close discussins, lol
- [15:31] Simon Linden: Any way is fine, Rex
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: are there any regions to cross to that aren't ocean?
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: :-p
- [15:31] Simon Linden: We just want it to be a busy region
- [15:32] Simon Linden: yeah, I don't know what's going on ... neighboring regions aren't talking well today
- [15:32] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: if you update my avi, then i have a great ship to cross the sims with
- [15:32] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: lol
- [15:32] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: heavy lag in basic alone
- [15:32] JB Hancroft: Youri - just change your password - it will sync over
- [15:32] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: (sculpti ship)
- [15:32] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: lol, k
- [15:32] Talisien Llewellyn: I'm not seeing any neighboring regions from here, it's all ocean.
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: until then I want to talk about test plans
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: who has been to our public qa portal?
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: [8]
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: show of hands?
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: peers around
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: show of paws?
- [15:33] JB Hancroft: (only looked at once I saw it in the agenda)
- [15:33] Gooden Uggla: i have
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: I'll take it that those test plans are mostly unknown
- [15:34] Flynn Tigerpaw: i have no hands or paws or arms... i'm a bot
- [15:34] Savino Dagostino: am there now...
- [15:34] Moundsa Mayo: Looked but did not touch.
- [15:34] Rex Cronon: just now
- [15:34] Sigma Avro: well, honest a bit long to read these tests; Wen,t there only to set up a telehub
- [15:34] Gooden Uggla: evel kneivel over sim lines
- [15:34] Lares Carter: only had a brief look at it
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: yeah, there's a lot of non glamorous projects in there
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: I mean test plans
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: I'm curious if people use those test plans
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: and if there is any benefit to us making more of them publicly available
- [15:35] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: brb, relog
- [15:35] Savino Dagostino: Any dependancies between test plans we need to be aware of?
- [15:35] Moon Metty: i usually start wothout plan
- [15:35] Moon Metty: without
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: I want to make more of our test plans available to the public
- [15:36] Sigma Avro: no, istead the babage scripts for performances yes
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: but they take time to get ready
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: and if no one is using them or will be using them there is no point
- [15:37] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: hmm... odd, it doesnt change my viewer password, but website pass does change
- [15:37] Savino Dagostino: I think that scripted test plans are good
- [15:37] Gooden Uggla: break them down into small packages with pre-made items and a notecard list
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: scripted test plans?
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: not all tests can be done from premade items
- [15:37] Savino Dagostino: step by step, as opposed to just goal oriented
- [15:38] Rex Cronon: i have a small suggestion. get torley to make a vide test turorial;)
- [15:38] Rex Cronon: video*
- [15:38] Sigma Avro: Why not the Babages scripts ?
- [15:38] Gooden Uggla: true, but having those steps on a notecard would make it more likely to complete whole test sets
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: so an in world note card is easier than an external wiki page?
- [15:39] Gooden Uggla: step 1 - rezz item a - step 2 rezz a plywood box step 3 etc
- [15:39] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: in some cases, yes
- [15:39] Flynn Tigerpaw: i think so, it's hard to be switchng back and forth between viewer and browser
- [15:39] JB Hancroft: has anyone made some sort of testing harness with a modified viewer?
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: I use alt-tab
- [15:39] Gooden Uggla: what flynn said, and that way you could have a "beta testing supplies station" somewhere
- [15:39] Savino Dagostino: I have dual monitors...test plans on one...SL on the other
- [15:39] Moundsa Mayo: I prefer the wiki - external to SL. Personal work style differences, perhaps.
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: for me I like my viewer set one way and then testing instructions in a separeate app so I don't have to shuffle things around in viewer
- [15:40] Rex Cronon: right now i have have screen divided in half, one for browser and one for viewer
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: why isn't everyone like me?
- [15:40] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: would be very dull oskar ;)
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: hardly
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: :-)
- [15:40] Sigma Avro: we do not have a big screem probably
- [15:40] Lares Carter: i would prefer test plans on wiki as well
- [15:40] Maestro Linden: hm you could use the viewer's browser to view the wiki steps, I guess..
- [15:40] Simon Linden: Whatever Oskar is, he's not dull :)
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: isn't sure what he is either :-p
- [15:41] Marigold Devin: No, he's not :-))
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: I'll figure it out when I grow up
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: s/when/if/
- [15:41] Gooden Uggla: or both, wiki and inworld
- [15:41] Gooden Uggla: multiple resources is never a bad thing
- [15:41] Oskar Linden: ok, well I'm going to progress down the path of making more test available
- [15:41] Moundsa Mayo: ty
- [15:41] Talisien Llewellyn: Just a suggestion, but why not have a set location on this grid where information is available about testing? Provide a link to the wiki and also notecards. That way you can get both sets of testers working on the issues as well as have a central location for information/meetups/whatever
- [15:41] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: i was not saying oskar was dull, i was rather saying everyone being the same is dull. since no one will be adding any differnce, it just will get dull and uninterresting :p
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: central areas are kind of a pain sometimes
- [15:42] Rex Cronon: if we had tool that we put a check each time we have done a specific step in a specific test...
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: I use the group Second Life Beta as a central area
- [15:42] Gooden Uggla: looks around and agrees with oskar
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: for communications
- [15:42] Sigma Avro: personnaly, I feel that tests are more usefull when we tests own stuff
- [15:42] Marigold Devin: I agree with Oskar, and I always have gzillions of windows open, so a Wiki open is no problemo
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: agreed sigma
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: it has more relevence locally that way as well
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: I have made our sim smoke test available: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Simulator_Smoke_Test
- [15:43] Flynn Tigerpaw: for me, the fewer windows open the better
- [15:43] Flynn Tigerpaw: I get lost easily
- [15:43] Moundsa Mayo: But standard test procedures help triangulate in on possible causes.
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: I would appreciate everyone taking a look at those instructions and at least attempting some of the tests
- [15:43] Rex Cronon: a smoke test is supposed to try to crash a sim?
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: no
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: smoke test is an old plumbers term actually
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: before a system in a building was filled with water they would fill it with smoke
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: then if they saw smoke they knew there was a leak
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: a somke test is just like that for software
- [15:44] Moundsa Mayo: Or a fire.
- [15:44] Oskar Linden: you test basic functionality and look for glaring issues
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: and that's all this is
- [15:45] Rex Cronon: didn't realize that plumbers fill pipes with smoke
- [15:45] Gooden Uggla: good basaic set of tests, how long does the smoke test take to perform?
- [15:45] Simon Linden: "Smoke test" is also used a lot in electronics ... plug it in, turn it on and see if smoke comes out
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Simulator_Smoke_Test should be nothing more than a 'does sl perform at a basic level' kind of test
- [15:45] Gooden Uggla: rex they use air pressue now and a pressure guage
- [15:45] Sigma Avro: i do rather soap test for tubings, lol
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: keep that in mind when looking over that smoke test
- [15:45] Rex Cronon: i see quite a few of those tests requier at least 2 people
- [15:45] Oskar Linden: yes
- [15:45] Marigold Devin: Then grab me and test with me.
- [15:46] xXx Zane: Hello!
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: :-)
- [15:46] Rex Cronon: hi
- [15:46] Marigold Devin: I don't have my own sim, if you have a sim you want to test on.
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: make new friends
- [15:46] xXx Zane: Pleasure too meet you all
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: there are a few tests in there that require Estate Manager level access
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: I'm not assuming you all have that
- [15:46] xXx Zane: This is cool
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: I'm looking for feedback
- [15:46] Gooden Uggla: how much time does this test set take?
- [15:46] Gooden Uggla: :)
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: does that test cover enough from your pov?
- [15:46] xXx Zane: Im not interrupting something am I?
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: is it too much?
- [15:46] Sigma Avro: could you send after a NC with the main links Oscar ?
- [15:46] Oskar Linden: are there other huge areas you think are missed?
- [15:46] Gooden Uggla: no, i was just wondeering
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: please do.
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: take some time to read through the tests and give me feedback.
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: that's all I'm asking for at this point
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: notecards on AGNI are the ebst way
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: welcome xXx. this is my Office Hours
- [15:47] Rex Cronon: could each test specify in its title how many avatars r required to do it, and any other requirements?
- [15:47] Sigma Avro: to whom the NC ?
- [15:47] xXx Zane: Hello
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: moi
- [15:47] Sigma Avro: dac
- [15:47] Oskar Linden: Mr Oskar Linden
- [15:48] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: not miss oskar linden? :p

- [15:48] Sigma Avro: (and mister, not, haha)
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: and ur welcome
- [15:48] Savino Dagostino: Oskar, to participate in the beta testing, do I need to have any perms setup...groups tobe in, etc??
- [15:48] Gooden Uggla: he's picked out a coffee girl? that's news to me...
- [15:49] Gooden Uggla: *wink*
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: no Savino
- [15:49] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: was a easy joke to make... :p
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: being in the groupd Second Life Beta is enough
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: I communicate testing needs through there
- [15:49] Savino Dagostino: I'm not currently in that group...looks like I need to join.
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: and the email list
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/server-beta
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: I'm going to be making more test plans public.
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: I'll pass them by you guys to see what you think as I do
- [15:50] Moon Metty: ok :)
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: the next test plans will be deeper and more feature specific
- [15:50] Marigold Devin: Well people are always grumbling on forums that LL aren't communicating - making them public people will hopefully get more involved in "their world"
- [15:50] Oskar Linden: I hope so
- [15:50] Sigma Avro: sees Ella impatient
- [15:51] JB Hancroft: Oskar - is all of the testing currently manual.. people-driven? anything scripted?
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: most of the wiki test plans are people driven
- [15:51] Rex Cronon: now u just need an incentive for more people to help with the tests:)
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: some have scripted portions
- [15:51] Marigold Devin: The incentive should be to strive for a more stable grid
- [15:51] Oskar Linden: we are working on automation internally
- [15:51] JB Hancroft: nods... ok, thanks
- [15:51] Sigma Avro: automation of what ?
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: if you guys come to me a month from now and are like hey I made a script to do the smoke test I'd think that was ossm :-D
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: automation of as much as we can
- [15:52] JB Hancroft: ossm is good... noted :)
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: most at a lower unit test function level
- [15:52] Gooden Uggla: the only suggestion i have is to make the test sets in 30-45 minute chunks - just for sanity's sake
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: noted
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: gooden goes insane after half an hour
- [15:53] Gooden Uggla: always
- [15:53] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: lol
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: this whole mtv generation and your short attention spans ;-)
- [15:53] JB Hancroft: huh? what?
- [15:53] Marigold Devin: Not me. OCD keeps me going for hours!
- [15:53] Savino Dagostino: chuckles
- [15:53] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: good i dont fit in thatt: p
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: no one wants to watch a 2 hours music video?
- [15:53] Marigold Devin: Not unless its Def Leppard :-)
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: :-D
- [15:54] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: only if its interresting enough oskar :p
- [15:54] Gooden Uggla: lol i was in a dorm room in college watching MTV the moment it launched
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: I don't think I could do a 2 hour def leppard music video
- [15:54] Marigold Devin: "do"? or "watch"?
- [15:54] Oskar Linden: I think the longest music video I have seen was in the Star Wars holiday Special: with Jefferson Starship for 15 minutes
- [15:54] JB Hancroft: woudl rather write test scripts that watch 2 hours of Torley without a break ;)
- [15:54] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: only 15 mins?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: alright 5 mins until Simons Pylon
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: thoughts?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: Quotes?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: Last Rites?
- [15:55] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: there are a few songs that are double that at least
- [15:55] Gooden Uggla: you never sat in a theater and watched (slept thru) "the song remains the same"?
- [15:55] Marigold Devin: So, its, in, out, shake it all about for five minutes, then clean up all our gubbins ?
- [15:55] Oskar Linden: after Simon gives the word
- [15:55] Oskar Lindenri: Ashton: never looked at classical music either i guess :p
- [15:55] JB Hancroft: hokeypokey smokey test

- [15:56] Oskar Linden: Simon will direct
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: Simon Says
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: ;-)
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: i only suggest bite-sized chunks as ameans for people to orderly complete the sets within busy schedules
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: and ADD
- [15:56] Gooden Uggla: :)

- [15:58] Sigma Avro: Wath about people being banned and having objects in the sim ?
- [15:58] Simon Linden: ugh, I'm reading that history. It would take a while to understand what's going on there
- [15:59] Sigma Avro: should banishement be effective only once these objects are returned ?
- [15:59] Oskar Linden: well thank you all for attending my Office Hours
