Agenda
Updates
- Re-Introducing Joshua Linden
- Main Channel
- "server-maint" project from the Magnum Channel.
- Bugs Fixed
- SVC-6781: Duplicating old attachments does not copy attachment point/position/rotation info
- Some people may notice a slight improvement in regions with heavy object creation/deletion. (Maestro claims he saw his object-creation benchmark speed up from 14 obj/sec to 17 obj/sec. Nothing was changed in object creation, however we did clean up object deletion, and Maestro's benchmark deletes objects as fast as they are created.)
- Magnum
- This channel got the "Estate Transfer Limits" project.
- This project implements adjusted behaviour limiting L$, IM, and object transfer for accounts who are limited to estates.
- LeTigre
- This will get Andrew's "maint-server" branch. There was a bug during the deploy last week that is fixed. This branch contains several bug fixes, some security fixes, some fixed crash modes, and various performance enhancements.

- [15:05] Joshua Linden: heh, okay
- [15:05] Rex Cronon: wb
- [15:05] Joshua Linden: So I'm Josh, and I'm a Linden. (The first step is admitting it, right?)
- [15:05] Bronson Blackadder: lol
- [15:06] Rex Cronon: hi josh:)
- [15:06] Kelly Linden: HI JOSH
- [15:06] Kallista DestinyKallista: Destiny chuckles

- [15:06] Oskar Linden: heh
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: nice welcome :-)
- [15:07] Draconis Neurocam: what better crash data could you get, when its in house
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: we will move on
- [15:07] Monty LindenMonty: Linden crashed too
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: agenda again: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Beta_Server_Office_Hours
- [15:07] Monty Linden: bad devs
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: not a bad week
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: except that my home internet died so I couldn't watch the release tuesday morning at 6am in my pajamas
- [15:07] Oskar Linden: :-/
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: I had to leavesuper early and get into the office
- [15:08] Fancy Greeter: Joshua Linden has arrived!
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: feeling better josh?
- [15:08] TriloByte Zanzibar: hopefully you're not someplace where it's terribly cold or you had to take a canoe
- [15:08] Kallista Destiny: Welcome back Joshua
- [15:08] Flip IdlemindFlip: Idlemind changes "arrived" to "returned"
- [15:08] Rex Cronon: wb again joshua
- [15:08] TriloByte Zanzibar: wb Josh
- [15:08] Oskar Linden: welcome to the server beta user group :-D *CRASH*
- [15:08] Fancy Greeter: Joshua Linden has arrived!
- [15:09] Rex Cronon: is joshua trying to break a record or something?
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: hah
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: I don't know
- [15:09] Joshua Linden: switched computers, then it had to auto-update moments after I logged in
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: nice
- [15:09] Oskar Linden: so you were telling people about you
- [15:09] Joshua Linden: yeah
- [15:10] Kallista Destiny: Nice to have a spare machine around
- [15:10] Oskar Linden: or 4
- [15:10] Joshua Linden: So, when I joined Linden about years ago I ran the release team. If you're and old timer, you may remember we shut the grid down every other Wednesday and everyone flocked to Aditi to test it. That was often me putting the big switch
- [15:10] Draconis Neurocam: simpler times
- [15:11] Kallista Destiny: Ahhh, "I've been lookin' for you, pilgram."
- [15:11] Joshua Linden: Then I ran away (cackling) and worked on a variety of projects like SL Enterprise, the SL Web Viewer Beta and some standards stuff (OGP/VWRAP). Now I'm starting to help out with the platform team, hence coming here to meet all of you
- [15:11] TankMaster Finesmith: :)
- [15:11] Bronson Blackadder: well welcome :)
- [15:11] Oskar Linden: anything cool you'll be working on in the near future you can tell us about?
- [15:11] Fancy Greeter: Monty Linden has arrived! (Or, returned?)
- [15:11] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:12] Joshua Linden: Right now just some random little bug fixes. Then helping with planning.
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: cool. well you are more than welcome here.
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: good to see you on aditi
- [15:12] Oskar Linden: I was just about to detail this weeks releases
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: Tuesdays main channel release went well
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: "server-maint" from magnum got promoted
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: all seems well with that
- [15:13] Oskar Linden: it was a pretty light release
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: Magnum now has a new project
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: that really only contains code for estates with avatars limited to estate
- [15:14] TankMaster Finesmith: like some teen regions?
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: this is fixed behaviour for having teen accounts on the main grid
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: well we don't have "teen" regions anymore
- [15:14] Oskar Linden: we have G regions
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: and 16/17yo accounts
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: Like certain schools who own islands and don't want their students to mix with the unwashed masses :)
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: maestro. do you have any more details to share
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: hey hey hey!
- [15:15] Oskar Linden: my masses wash!
- [15:15] Joshua Linden: Heh. Do we have any teens in the Server Beta group?
- [15:15] Maestro Linden: the changes affected rules for IMs, inventory offers, and L$ transactions
- [15:15] Rex Cronon: we r unwashed masses? lol. did they every try to was pixels:)
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: yes there are teens in the SBUG joshua, but they just don't advertise it
- [15:16] Kallista Destiny: The Hoi Poi and other pedestrians
- [15:16] Oskar Linden: what are some examples of changed rules maestro?
- [15:16] Maestro Linden: basically, the rules used to be a little insane (like UserA could IM UserB, but not vice-versa), and now the rules are a bit more consistent
- [15:17] Maestro Linden: well, the new rules are that if UserA is limited to a private estate, and UserB is a 'normal' avatar,
- [15:17] Maestro Linden: then UserA can IM/transact with UserB only if they're both physically located in that private estate
- [15:17] TriloByte Zanzibar: protects them from pervs & scammers trying to connect with them directly from outside their allowed regions, that sort of thing?
- [15:18] Draconis Neurocam: hopefully this prevents scripted instant messages as well
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: I guess that's one motivation, Trilobyte
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: it does
- [15:18] Maestro Linden: (@ draconis)
- [15:18] Rex Cronon: for an open world this sounds quite weird
- [15:18] Draconis NeurocamDraconis: Neurocam nods
- [15:18] Oskar Linden: it's still an open world, but some customers have valid reasons to create limits
- [15:19] Kallista Destiny: Rex, for some people it's not as open for others, with good reason.
- [15:19] Eddi Decosta: hi there sorry this ibnterup im just back at m y home :)
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: you could say that "hide from search" makes it a closed world
- [15:19] Rex Cronon: hi
- [15:19] shamus: so: if a teen subscribes to a subobatic and the server is in a nomral sim they will never ever recive messages from the subomatic?
- [15:19] Oskar Linden: what is the subomatic?
- [15:19] Draconis Neurocam: subscribomatic i imagine
- [15:20] Rex Cronon: i am curious to hear more details abut these new restrictions
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: yes I think that's correct, shamus
- [15:20] Oskar Linden: this is a very special use case and is limited in use
- [15:20] RedMokum Bravin: A thing that sends you unwanted messages that you have forgotten you ever subscribed to. :-(
- [15:20] shamus: woy: typoed that bad
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: interactions between normal users should remain unchanged
- [15:20] Maestro Linden: if something did change, then that's probably a bug
- [15:20] TriloByte Zanzibar: yeah, I'd imagine that if you're placing subscribomatic/hipogroup terminals on age-restricted land, you'd need to have a server there too
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: there is no age restricted land
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: only G, M, and A
- [15:21] TriloByte Zanzibar: I phrased that wrong, I meant land where your organization is sponsoring teens
- [15:21] TriloByte Zanzibar: school/campus/etc
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: it's not even just teens
- [15:21] Oskar Linden: you can limit to estate any account
- [15:22] Draconis Neurocam: didnt know that
- [15:22] Oskar Linden: a lot of organizations like the feature. it allows them the ability to create an experience that they can fully control
- [15:22] TriloByte Zanzibar: ah, I never knew that
- [15:22] Rex Cronon: there is one word that comes to mind. prison
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: ok rex
- [15:23] Joshua Linden: The best way to think of it is: "if you got your account via some organization, that organization may have restrictions on it". of course, you're generally free to create an account not associated with that organization
- [15:23] RedMokum Bravin: Self imposed prison though.
- [15:23] shamus: conrfield: caugh
- [15:23] Simon Linden: how about school? :)
- [15:23] TriloByte Zanzibar: yeah, exactly. project or corporate/education accounts etc
- [15:23] Rex Cronon: i guess it can have it uses
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: so if you are on a magnum region and noticed odd L$/IM/object transferring call Maestro at home
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: I mean file a jira
- [15:23] Oskar Linden: then call maestro at home
- [15:24] Draconis Neurocam: hook a jira search keyword filter to his home phone even
- [15:24] Master StarshipMaster: Starship looks up maestro's number
- [15:24] Kallista Destiny: Lol, *picks Oskars phone for Maestro's phone number
- [15:24] Maestro Linden: yep that number is 1-800-OskarL
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: The LeTigre RC channel got last weeks maint-server branch that got pulled
- [15:24] Oskar Linden: with fixes :-)
- [15:25] Eddi Decosta: loll Maestro :)
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: fixes for the fixes
- [15:25] Master Starship: I missed the last digit what was it Maestro?
- [15:25] Maestro Linden: oops, sort a digit. make that OskarLi :)
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: initial reports look good
- [15:25] Maestro Linden: *short heh
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: this contains a lot of fixes
- [15:25] TankMaster Finesmith: 1-800-OskarLL
- [15:25] Oskar Linden: including SVC-1144 SVC-5959 SVC-6713 SVC-6709 and SVC-412
- [15:25] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-5959:
- [#SVC-5959] Groups notices: sent to email do not identify sender
- [15:25] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-1144:
- [#SVC-1144] replies to: offline emails can't contain unicode
- [15:25] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-6709:
- [#SVC-6709] Delete objects: on owned land stopped working since recent server-updates.
- [15:25] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-412:
- [#SVC-412] Include "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8" header in the messages forwarded from second life.
- [15:26] Maestro Linden: SVC-1144 isn't deployed yet;
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: as well as some crash fixes
- [15:26] Oskar Linden: and security fixes
- [15:26] Joshua Linden: maestro: actually, it is live on agni
- [15:26] Joshua LindenJoshua: Linden just checked
- [15:26] Maestro Linden: it requires the central servers to run that code. those central servers probably won't get updated until this code makes it to the main channel
- [15:27] Maestro Linden: oh really? I thought we were holding off. I guess that's fine.
- [15:27] Joshua Linden: (pay no attention to the disagreeing lindens...)
- [15:27] Joshua Linden: So, um, give it a test? :)
- [15:27] Oskar Linden: :-)
- [15:27] Draconis Neurocam: disagreement promotes thought and progression, or should at least
- [15:28] Kelly Linden: or cage matches. either way.
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: the BlueSteel RC has been the bad boy of the bunch
- [15:28] Monty Linden: mostly cage matches
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: there's this obscure crashing mode that I've been trying to help that team narrow down
- [15:28] Oskar Linden: it took about a week but we finally got it to crash in their dev environment
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: it was a hassle
- [15:29] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: and you guys think we just play all day
- [15:29] Oskar Linden: it was incredibly ironic all the work that went into tweaking that dev environment to get it to crash reliably :-D
- [15:29] TankMaster Finesmith: your not playing if your not crashing the sim...
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: does it crash yet? try this setting? does it crash now? how about now?
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: that car cracks me up
- [15:30] Rex Cronon: what was it? memory corruption? dangling pointers?
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: this wand is fun in this meetings
- [15:30] Flip Idlemind: Try to work the word crash into a sentence as many times as you can
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: I don't know what the root cause was yet
- [15:30] Oskar Linden: step 1 was just reproing the crash in their dev env
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: I'll let them fix it now. my work is done
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: :-)
- [15:31] Oskar Linden: thankfully the crashing mode has been so low we've not had to pull the BlueSteel code
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: barring any unforeseen circumstances we should probably promote either "Estate Transfer Limits" or the maint-server next week
- [15:32] Oskar Linden: we'll decide on Monday after the weekend
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: that's what we did this week
- [15:33] TankMaster Finesmith: "Estate Transfer Limits" ?
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: yeah
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: we just talked about that
- [15:33] TankMaster Finesmith: ah ok
- [15:33] Oskar Linden: the limited to estate fixes
- [15:33] Joshua Linden: ETL = Magnum
- [15:34] Master Starship: ?
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: :-D
- [15:34] Monty Linden: E.T. Linden I like that
- [15:34] Kallista Destiny: See the Minutes for the drtails
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: it's all in the agenda : "Estate Transfer Limits"
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: upcoming stuff
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: the details of the XMPP public beta are still being sorted out
- [15:34] Oskar Linden: I have nothing new to report there
- [15:35] Monty Linden: guys are working on it
- [15:35] Oskar LindenOskar: Linden ducks as Latif throws tomatoes
- [15:35] TriloByte Zanzibar: is it safe to say it won't make the promised 3/31 rollout?
- [15:35] Monty Linden: figuring out the deploy plan, load testing
- [15:35] Rex Cronon: lets see if i got it right. estate tranfer limits will restrict ave movement, im, inventory transfer, and L$ transfers. right?
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: oh latif isn't here
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: :-(
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: aww
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: it doesn't restrict av movement
- [15:35] Oskar Linden: that's what the feature does to begin with
- [15:36] Kallista Destiny: That's going to be difficult to really test in Adti. Groups here just aren't all the large.
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: this updates the logic behind av->av communication and L$/object transfer
- [15:36] Rex Cronon: so even if u r part of that restricted group u can still roam the whole grid?
- [15:36] Maestro Linden: it's a per-account setting, Rex
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: if your avatar is limited to an estate you cannt leave that estate
- [15:36] Oskar Linden: it is a feature used by private organizations
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: it has no real effect on SL as a whole
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: this has been in SL for a long long time
- [15:37] Master Starship: but they will be very happy when you fix it
- [15:37] Rex Cronon: can these restrictions be set/removed at will?
- [15:37] Oskar Linden: we just updated it to match how things are currently set up with teen accounts
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: these settings are set by the estate owner
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: in communication with the support team
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: I have the feeling you don't understand the fundamental issue and are getting confused
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: I understand. it is a tricky concept
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: we can talk about it elsewhere if you want
- [15:38] Oskar Linden: it's not in the scope of this meeting
- [15:39] Rex Cronon: ok
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: monty is SUPER excited to talk
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: he has been planning this talk for weeks now
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: he even sent me flowcharts
- [15:39] Monty Linden: only if you have my picture
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: yup yup yup
- [15:39] Oskar Linden: right behind me
- [15:40] Monty Linden: big
- [15:40] Monty Linden: okay, I'll talk
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: and https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/File:Asset_Paths_and_Caching.png
- [15:40] Oskar Linden: take it away monty
- [15:40] Monty Linden: fun picture that approximately shows the asset system
- [15:40] Monty Linden: red lines are old udp textures and new http textures for reference
- [15:40] Monty Linden: we're working on making the blue line much faster
- [15:40] Monty Linden: other assets, stuff the sim needs, 'the rest'
- [15:41] Monty Linden: working through the test plans then I'd love to see
- [15:41] Monty Linden: combat sims and similar beat the heck out of it on Aditi
- [15:41] Monty Linden: Others have been quietly tweaking other parts of that
- [15:42] Monty Linden: the past two weeks. Stuff you can't see as a region restart.
- [15:42] Monty Linden: But assets are moving out faster and faster. All of them.
- [15:42] Oskar Linden: you'll be surprised to know that Monty made that in only 72 hours, using MSPaint
- [15:42] Monty Linden: That's the story...
- [15:42] TankMaster Finesmith: lol
- [15:42] Draconis Neurocam: hes got skills, drop shadow in ms paint
- [15:43] Rex Cronon: u could have used word:)
- [15:43] Oskar Linden: any questions mor Monty?
- [15:43] Joshua Linden: (Side note: if your friends are using viewers that aren't using HTTP Textures they're making the sim do extra work and adding to lag. Shame them into upgrading.)
- [15:44] Monty Linden: Only sorta true, Joshua
- [15:44] Monty Linden: VWR-9509
- [15:44] JIRA-helper: http//jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9509:
- [#VWR-9509] Texture Cache: Appears Ineffective - Some textures from prior sessions are left unused
- [15:44] Draconis Neurocam: what is DAV, Varnish, and Demux? everything else seems familiar
- [15:44] Kelly Linden: varnish is like squid
- [15:44] Monty Linden: DAV is WebDAV, Varnish is a better HTTP cache (open source)
- [15:44] Rex Cronon: so now "vVFS" is being skipped by using http to transport texture?
- [15:44] Monty Linden: demux is our secret sauce
- [15:44] Monty Linden: yep
- [15:45] Monty Linden: (Rex)
- [15:45] Draconis Neurocam: also its cool to see you are still using the isilons
- [15:45] Monty Linden: there is another cache up there
- [15:45] Rex Cronon: vfs=very fast service:)
- [15:45] Monty Linden: they're still doing work
- [15:45] Monty Linden: very f'ing service
- [15:45] Monty Linden: piece of code that makes me angry
- [15:46] Draconis Neurocam: virtual virtual file system, heh
- [15:46] Kallista Destiny: Virtual file System?
- [15:46] Monty Linden: yep
- [15:48] Draconis Neurocam: actually, even if they werent getting faster, considering the number of steps, its incredibly fast already, from my perspective
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: alrighty then
- [15:48] TankMaster Finesmith: so there isnt any viewer changes in this, right?
- [15:48] Rex Cronon: lol. thanks oskar:)
- [15:48] TankMaster Finesmith: (monty)
- [15:48] Monty Linden: nope, none
- [15:48] TankMaster Finesmith: ok :)
- [15:48] Oskar Linden: thanks Monty
- [15:48] Monty Linden: draconis: agreed :-)
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: so how much of this has been implemented already and how much are you still working on?
- [15:49] TriloByte Zanzibar: sounds cool, Monty, is that coming down the pipe soon?
- [15:49] Monty Linden: all
- [15:49] Monty Linden: everything you see is live, just making the blue path faster
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: cool
- [15:49] TriloByte Zanzibar: excellent
- [15:49] Oskar Linden: thanks monty
- [15:50] Maestro Linden: speaking of fetching stuff
- [15:50] Maestro Linden: the 2.5.1 viewer update is using the new inventory service, again
- [15:50] Rex Cronon: if only more custom moding would be allowed to be done to v2 gui, u would have people fighthing to download it:)
- [15:50] Kallista Destiny: I was on a main channel machine today and loaded 35K+ of inventory in 2.5 minutes

- [15:51] Simon Linden: Not really ... had some new code out on LeTigre this week
- [15:52] Simon Linden: Have seen a minor performance boost ... nothing to hold a big celebration over, but a step in the right direction
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: cool
- [15:52] Rex Cronon: u just have to remove upd tranfers to make sim go zooom:)
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: anyone else have a topic for these last few minutes?
- [15:52] Maestro Linden: Simon's talking about the improved simulator message packing
- [15:52] Simon Linden: I ran a test on a region with 40 avs ... the new code shaved 1 ms off each frame, on average
- [15:52] Oskar Linden: wow
- [15:53] Oskar Linden: those add up
- [15:53] Kelly Linden: That is ~5%. not too bad
- [15:53] Simon Linden: Right ... and the benefit should get bigger with more AVs
- [15:53] TriloByte Zanzibar: I'll take those gains any day :)
- [15:54] Draconis Neurocam: monty, i imagine people would be interested if you did a tech blog post with that picture
- [15:54] Simon Linden: So I'm eager to try 60 or 80 AVs when we have something that crowded
- [15:54] Monty Linden: "Monty Vents"
- [15:54] Monty Linden: :-)
- [15:54] Jonathan Yap: I have a question -- why are regions restarting now with only 5 minutes of notice when it used to be 10?
- [15:54] TriloByte Zanzibar: yeah, at least a post on the new community dealio
- [15:54] Rex Cronon: u can have a bi town eetingto annuce it on themain gid:)

- [15:55] Flip Idlemind: RUN!!!
- [15:56] Kallista Destiny: well , walk
- [15:56] Flip Idlemind: Or, stroll
- [15:56] Oskar Linden: grab your prims
- [15:56] Kadah CobaKadah: Coba bets it will crash sooner than that
- [15:56] TankMaster Finesmith: hhah yeah
- [15:56] Draconis Neurocam: the viewer can send any time it wants, or use to could, unless you fixed it
- [15:56] Rex Cronon: no need to run u have 10 days
- [15:57] Flip Idlemind: I've said this before, it'd be cool if the viewer had a real-time count down thingy for region restarts
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: well that is all I have for this week
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: sounds like something you could script and sell flip
- [15:57] TankMaster Finesmith: yeah, but you need 5 min wornings for the remainder of the 10 days...
- [15:57] Draconis Neurocam: haha
- [15:57] Jonathan Yap: It would have to pick up aborts somehow though
- [15:57] Oskar Linden: Oskar Linden: In 5 minutes this region will be going down in 10 days!

- [15:58] TriloByte Zanzibar: thanks a lot, have a good rest-of-week
- [15:58] Flip Idlemind: I also think that (in addition to my count down idea) the sim should send your viewer info about if and when the sim is restarting any time you enter it

- [15:59] Rex Cronon: u too oskar
- [15:59] Maestro Linden: thanks for coming, everybody

- [15:59] Lares Carter: thanks Oskar, you too
- [15:59] Flip Idlemind: Just in case, for example, you happen to enter a region that's going down in 10 seconds (you wouldn't get a dialog)
- [15:59] Simon Linden: Thanks everyone
- [15:59] TankMaster Finesmith: thankyou for updating us :)
