Transcript
- [14:02] Opensource Obscure: wrt VWR-8215 .. i reported that. i'm experiencing this problem with HUDs and mouse steering since last year
- [14:02] Rob Linden: reminder: transcript of this discussion will be posted on wiki.secondlife.com ... keep that in mind as you type
- [14:02] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: greetings all
- [14:02] Rob Linden: pulls up VWR-8215
- [14:03] Rob Linden: agenda: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Open_Source_Meeting/Agenda
- [14:03] Opensource Obscure: i didn't find a way to reproduce it though. it's apparently random, and happens after login only
- [14:03] Opensource Obscure: this happens to luciano too, and other linux users
- [14:03] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: :)
- [14:03] Catharina Jacobus: Hi
- [14:04] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: hi all :)
- [14:04] reekje Digfoot: were ar ju cath?
- [14:04] Catharina Jacobus: here Reekje...
- [14:04] Catharina Jacobus: have a seat
- [14:04] Opensource Obscure: i found there are many way to re-enable HUDs and mouse steering, as written in the Description at JIRA
- [14:05] Rob Linden: hmmmm....opensource: what's the consequence of this bug?
- [14:05] Opensource Obscure: HUDs don't work
- [14:05] Opensource Obscure: mouse steering doesn't work.,
- [14:06] Opensource Obscure: -.-
- [14:06] Soft Linden: I think there's a related issue about the mouse capture sometimes failing with Linux
- [14:06] Opensource Obscure: i guess this is quite problematic for people that use HUDs.
- [14:06] Soft Linden: If it's not capturing the mouse, it's not going to be able to do mouselook properly
- [14:06] Rob Linden: ok....I see. I can't repro, but I"ve been logged in for a while
- [14:06] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: yes... for resolve this bug, any time if im log into secondlife i need to go in mouselook "sorry for my bad english :P"
- [14:06] Rob Linden: I'll keep an eye out for it myself
- [14:06] Robin Cornelius: ah yea, i have seen this myself at login
- [14:06] Opensource Obscure: robin: on linux?
- [14:07] Robin Cornelius: yes
- [14:07] Rob Linden: I'm on Ubuntu, and I haven't really noticed this, but I may have been subconciously working around it
- [14:07] Opensource Obscure: i'm on ubuntu too. robin?
- [14:07] Robin Cornelius: Debian
- [14:07] Opensource Obscure: luciano su che distribuzione l'hai visto ?
- [14:07] Robin Cornelius: using my omvviewer debs
- [14:08] Atashi Toshihiko: I've had it happen with Debian Lenny - huds don't work, until they are detached and reattached
- [14:08] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: ubuntu have this bug... debian lenny is ok...
- [14:08] Opensource Obscure: what other information could we add to help Rob?
- [14:08] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: :-\
- [14:09] Opensource Obscure: atashi: maybe .. if it happens again to you .. try if steering works .. and try one of the other workarounds so we can see if it's the same thing
- [14:09] Atashi Toshihiko: will do, Opensource
- [14:09] Rob Linden: well, sounds like an issue that we should be able to repro, so I'll import it.
- [14:09] Opensource Obscure: i'm done, thanks.
- [14:09] Soft Linden: For QA, then?
- [14:11] Rob Linden: Soft: I'll put it in the pile and let others decide if it needs to go to QA first
- [14:11] Rob Linden: I also pinged Tofu in case he's seen it
- [14:13] Rob Linden: that's the end of the planned agenda. I'd like to keep this on open source/open development topics. anything anyone want to bring up
- [14:13] Catherine Pfeffer: er
- [14:13] Catherine Pfeffer: Catharina, courage...
- [14:14] Q Linden: is curious about the 4freedom crowd today
- [14:14] Opensource Obscure: i'd like to see some sharing of LSL snippets that use the new HTTP features
- [14:15] Catherine Pfeffer: yes, we planned a small demonstration Q
- [14:15] Catherine Pfeffer: we would like to deliver a petition to Linden Lab
- [14:15] Catharina Jacobus: yes, it will be a short interruption if we may...
- [14:16] Catherine Pfeffer: gave you 4Freedom Petition.
- [14:17] Catherine Pfeffer: currently, the development model of items in Second Life is all proprietary
- [14:17] Catherine Pfeffer: We would like to give people the choice
- [14:17] Catherine Pfeffer: Catharina has set up a petition, with 125 signatures
- [14:17] Catherine Pfeffer: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/secondlife-4freedom/index.html
- [14:18] Catharina Jacobus: Yes, so everyone can make an active choice on default settings
- [14:18] Catherine Pfeffer: and we have started a Jira too, with 80 votes and 26 watchers
- [14:18] Catherine Pfeffer: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8049
- [14:18] Catherine Pfeffer: we have provided as many client-side patches we could, but we would like just a little help from linden lab to achieve this
- [14:19] Catharina Jacobus: I am sorry, I thought this was an open meeting hour
- [14:19] Catherine Pfeffer: as open source creators inworld, it is very important to us, both from a practical point of view
- [14:19] Rob Linden: as long as you're on topic, it's fine, and yes, this is on topic
- [14:19] Soft Linden: I think this issue is actually already done in the featurettes branch
- [14:19] Rob Linden: yup.
- [14:19] Q Linden: yeah...
- [14:19] Khyota Wulluf: ive seen it in trunk too
- [14:20] Khyota Wulluf: i think*
- [14:20] Catherine Pfeffer: and from an "ideological" point of view as well, because it would show that Linden Lab is not committed only into a proprietary world
- [14:20] Catharina Jacobus: We only would like to ask you to view our case and support it if you can
- [14:20] Catherine Pfeffer: thanks for hearing, and for the time slice
- [14:20] Catherine Pfeffer: :-)
- [14:20] loopy String: lol
- [14:20] Catherine Pfeffer: you can wear the petition, rob ;-)
- [14:20] Opensource Obscure: claps
- [14:20] loopy String: \o/
- [14:20] Catharina Jacobus: nks :-)
- [14:20] Robin Cornelius: Rob/Soft/Q is there a server side component to deployed as well and is this live anywhere yet?
- [14:20] Grunt Ultsch: Get on your feet, loopy!
- [14:20] Catharina Jacobus: thanks....
- [14:21] Catherine Pfeffer: yes that is the problem
- [14:21] Catherine Pfeffer: coco linden already wriote the server side for the uploaded items part
- [14:21] Rob Linden: Robin: I'm not sure....it's not clear on the internal status where it all is in the queue
- [14:21] Soft Linden: I'm running a build of trunk/ right now. This functionality is already here for uploads.
- [14:21] Catherine Pfeffer: but it needs some more server side work, especially for the inworld creation part
- [14:21] Catharina Jacobus: could you find out Rob?
- [14:21] Soft Linden: So it will be in 1.23 if nothing breaks.
- [14:21] Q Linden: Right
- [14:21] Soft Linden: I don't see anything for prim permissions yet.
- [14:22] Catherine Pfeffer: basically, it's moving ObjectAdd message to capabilities. It's already written on the client side
- [14:22] Catharina Jacobus: great!
- [14:22] Soft Linden: Okay. I don't see a sub task for prim permission defaults. I'll create that and attach it to the internal meta issue
- [14:22] Catharina Jacobus: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/secondlife-4freedom/index.html for anyone that has not signed or seen it yet...
- [14:23] Catherine Pfeffer: as far as i know, the "upload" part will be in 1.23, but the "inworld" part needs being written server side
- [14:23] Catherine Pfeffer: thanks so much soft
- [14:23] Soft Linden: Right. The upload and defaul prim permissions are separate issues.
- [14:23] Catherine Pfeffer: and there are other parts too
- [14:23] Sour Wozniak: can I go home now?
- [14:24] Sour Wozniak: XP
- [14:24] Catherine Pfeffer: like in-inventory creation (new socks, new note...)
- [14:24] Rob Linden: Catharina and Catherine: no need to go through the trouble of circulating petitions and the like. we're happy to discuss this type of thing here and on sldev@
- [14:24] Catharina Jacobus: if you need to be in early Sour... np
- [14:24] Catherine Pfeffer: again, here, the client side is writeen, but we can't do anything without the server side
- [14:24] Catherine Pfeffer: yes i know rob
- [14:24] Sour Wozniak: lol nah.. ill stay
- [14:24] Catharina Jacobus: ok, but we also like to create some awareness with the petition
- [14:24] Rob Linden: it sounds like we may need to have multiple jira tasks here, given there's multiple components to this
- [14:25] Catherine Pfeffer: but okay it started with a petition of upset people
- [14:25] Q Linden: right, so we've been trying to imrpove our process for discussing and acting on these kinds of issues
- [14:25] Catherine Pfeffer: i tried to channel that into a jira and normal procedures ;-)
- [14:25] Catharina Jacobus: Bt it is nice to know that we are welcome here with our issues
- [14:25] Catherine Pfeffer: but ok, it has brought a bit of folklore to today's meeting
- [14:26] Catherine Pfeffer: it also shows how important this is to all the free software and open source community inworld
- [14:26] Rob Linden: yes, by all means....if you're showing up with code in hand, that almost automatically qualifies it as on-topic
- [14:26] Q Linden: seriously
- [14:26] Catherine Pfeffer: ;-)
- [14:26] JamieLee Salamander: woah... this is gona be bad lag when the world rezes lol
- [14:27] Rob Linden: so, is it true that only half of this feature may be done?
- [14:27] Grunt Ultsch: Both free builders and proprietary builders have said to welcome configurable default restrictions
- [14:27] Rob Linden: oh, wait, I see , there's VWR-8049 that's related
- [14:28] Catherine Pfeffer: yes
- [14:28] Q Linden: Right
- [14:28] Catherine Pfeffer: VWR-8049 is where the work takes place
- [14:28] Catherine Pfeffer: and it acts as a meta issue
- [14:28] Catherine Pfeffer: sorry for the m*ss
- [14:28] Q Linden: so 8624 is in, and will be released as part of 1.23
- [14:28] Q Linden: other stuff probably wont' make 1.23
- [14:28] Catherine Pfeffer: for example, svc-3046 describes the server side part of inworld creation
- [14:28] Soft Linden: Alright, created issues for notecards, prims, scripts
- [14:29] Rob Linden: Soft looks like he's furiously filing subtasks on the internal issue
- [14:29] Rob Linden: we probably should wire those up to external counderparts
- [14:29] Catherine Pfeffer: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8624 is the "upload" part that will make it to 1.23
- [14:30] Soft Linden: Are there external counterparts for the other three here?
- [14:30] Q Linden: yes
- [14:30] Q Linden: (that was yes to catherine)
- [14:30] Rob Linden: here are the internal issues:
- [14:30] Soft Linden: I'm leaving off landmarks. Those already default fully permissive.
- [14:30] Soft Linden: Ah, we probably want clothing as well
- [14:30] Rob Linden: DEV-27490 Allow residents to set default permissions on prims they create
- [14:30] Catherine Pfeffer: best thing is to look at 8049 and see all the related issues... I must really apologize... it has evolved into a big m*ss in the jira
- [14:31] Rob Linden: DEV-27492 Allow residents to set default permissions on scripts they create
- [14:31] Samia Bechir: if it would be possible for clothings too, yes that would be great
- [14:31] Sour Wozniak: D:
- [14:31] Sour Wozniak: cath is flag stabbing me
- [14:31] Catharina Jacobus: sorry, another crash..
- [14:31] Catharina Jacobus: sorry Sour...
- [14:31] Rob Linden: DEV-27493 Allow residents to set default permissions on notecards they create
- [14:31] loopy String: wb
- [14:32] Catherine Pfeffer: do not mix with the "bulk permission corrections"... that is another, complementary jira
- [14:32] Robin Cornelius: which is done
- [14:32] Rob Linden: so...if someone creates external counterparts, they can actually fill in the "Linden Lab Issue ID" with the issue numbers above
- [14:32] Grunt Ultsch: Please come back, Sour, cath didnt do it on purpose
- [14:32] Catherine Pfeffer: we would like to be able to set permissions before we create object, not to fix them, even in batches, after they were created
- [14:32] Soft Linden: DEV-27494 is clothing
- [14:32] Sour Wozniak: *crys*
- [14:33] Soft Linden: Yes. This is not linked to bulk updating.
- [14:33] Rob Linden: Catherine: are there patches for all of these?
- [14:33] Catherine Pfeffer: yes. it's complementary but independant
- [14:34] Catherine Pfeffer: there are client side patches for upload, inworld and in-inventory. no client side patch for in-object yet ("new script" button)
- [14:34] Soft Linden: We should really get guidance from Rx on what an acceptible UI would look like before soliciting patch help for the viewer side.
- [14:34] Catherine Pfeffer: there is a server side patch for upload, and no patches server-side for inworld and in-inventory (and in-object)
- [14:34] Soft Linden: But yeah the actual permission tweak would be better implemented server side, as well.
- [14:34] Catherine Pfeffer: i have attached screenshots to vwr-8049
- [14:35] Catherine Pfeffer: currently (upload), the UI is in file-> upload menu
- [14:35] Rob Linden: Soft: yeah, probably right. still would be good to have separate public tracking numbers, though
- [14:35] Catherine Pfeffer: but as it becomes a generic paradigm, it would be more suited either in edit -> preferences or in tools
- [14:35] Soft Linden: Can someone own making issues for clothing, notecards, scripts and prims individually?
- [14:36] Catherine Pfeffer: i have proposed two UIs. One for edit->preferences, the other one for Tools
- [14:36] Soft Linden: Rob mentioned all the internal JIRA numbers to link those to already.
- [14:36] Catherine Pfeffer: it is not needed
- [14:36] Q Linden: ericas' been working on this and she's coming to join us right now
- [14:36] Rob Linden: Q: oh, excellent
- [14:36] Q Linden: just a moment while we manufacture an erica
- [14:37] Catherine Pfeffer: ;-)
- [14:37] Rob Linden: while we do that, let's get the bookkeeping straight....
- [14:37] Q Linden: (I thought I remembered seeing it!)
- [14:37] Rob Linden: the parent issue for all of this is....
- [14:37] Rob Linden: VWR-8049?
- [14:37] Catherine Pfeffer: yes
- [14:38] Rob Linden: and then VWR-8624 is a subtask?
- [14:38] Rob Linden: (or at least, should be?)
- [14:38] Catherine Pfeffer: i have separated the patches for UI (two options), inworld creation, and in-inventory creation
- [14:38] Q Linden: we're text
- [14:39] loopy String: hello Erica
- [14:39] Catherine Pfeffer: yes VWR-8624 is the "upload" subtask
- [14:39] Erica Linden: coolthat.
- [14:39] Rob Linden: we're kickin' it oldschool here
- [14:39] Q Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8049
- [14:39] Catherine Pfeffer: i suggest we also invite Coco Linden ? She did the upload part
- [14:40] Debian Akroyd: hello all
- [14:40] Zauber Exonar: Hi Debian
- [14:40] Erica Linden: hope i'm not sitting on anyone...
- [14:40] loopy String: hi debian
- [14:40] Catherine Pfeffer: based on my upload parch
- [14:40] Rob Linden: VWR-8624 is now a subtask of VWR-8049
- [14:40] Rob Linden: ...as should all of the others
- [14:41] Catherine Pfeffer: cool thanks Rob
- [14:41] Rob Linden: so...now that Erica is here
- [14:41] Rob Linden: I think we all agree in principle that this would be a good thing to have....
- [14:41] Erica Linden: oh hai
- [14:41] Rob Linden: ....it's just a question of implementation at this point
- [14:42] Catherine Pfeffer: Strangely enough, it would not only be a good thing for open source folks
- [14:42] Catherine Pfeffer: but also for the professional builders who build in teams
- [14:42] Rob Linden: Erica: have you had a chance to catch up on VWR-8049?
- [14:42] Catherine Pfeffer: they could decide to set "share with group" in advance
- [14:42] Erica Linden: getting there...
- [14:42] Catherine Pfeffer: instead of fixing it for every object they create
- [14:42] Erica Linden: ah yes
- [14:43] Catherine Pfeffer: similarly, copy/no trans, or no copy/trans items creators could preset their default commercial model
- [14:43] Catharina Jacobus: true, everyon can pick their default settings
- [14:43] Erica Linden: default upload perms are in the featurettes branch
- [14:43] Erica Linden: ready to go
- [14:43] Catherine Pfeffer: :-) Erica
- [14:43] Erica Linden: coco knows when / if it has merged
- [14:44] Q Linden: right, the question was whether you've been looking at OTHER permsbesides uploads
- [14:44] Erica Linden: I've got a fun new layout for *ALL* places where we set/view perms
- [14:44] Catherine Pfeffer: of course Q
- [14:44] Erica Linden: no behavior changes
- [14:44] Catherine Pfeffer: that was even our first motivation
- [14:44] Erica Linden: but makes more sense for new builders, takes up less room
- [14:44] Grunt Ultsch: If everyone will be able to set their own default restrictions everyone will be ...
- [14:44] Grunt Ultsch: happy!
- [14:44] Erica Linden: is looking for a screengrab
- [14:44] Erica Linden: accepted your inventory offer.
- [14:44] Q Linden: free seats over by soft
- [14:45] Catharina Jacobus: It is important though to create awareness for newbies before they choose their defaults
- [14:45] Zauber Exonar: Hey Debian, you're sitting on someone, lol
- [14:45] Debian Akroyd: oh lmao sorry
- [14:45] Soft Linden: Total creature of habit. Going to sit here no matter how lopsided the crowd is. :>
- [14:45] Debian Akroyd: my internet is very slow atm
- [14:46] Q Linden: coco, the conversation is about default permissions -- both upload as well as other stuff
- [14:46] Q Linden: upload is already merged to trunk, right?
- [14:46] Coco Linden: yes
- [14:47] Soft Linden: Yup. I'm running trunk/ and see it here right now. :)
- [14:47] Rob Linden: huzzah
- [14:47] Coco Linden: as is bulk in-world object contents changing i believe
- [14:47] JamieLee Salamander: jeez with all my lag... if som eone slapped me... i would not feel it for about an hour
- [14:47] Khyota Wulluf: i turned of character rendering to cope
- [14:47] Debian Akroyd: lol jamie
- [14:48] Catharina Jacobus: same here Jamie :-)
- [14:48] Debian Akroyd: is running off the hotels internet..which is butt slow
- [14:48] Catharina Jacobus: could slap eachother :-)
- [14:48] JamieLee Salamander: lol
- [14:48] Coco Linden: as i understand it, there are still areas of content creation that would benefit from default perm prefs
- [14:48] Coco Linden: in-world, in-inventory, and in-object
- [14:48] JamieLee Salamander: i am off my uni laptop and internet which suck
- [14:48] Catherine Pfeffer: especially "inworld" part
- [14:49] Coco Linden: yes, and i believe the petition is regarding in-world?
- [14:49] Triss Gray: loves his sparkly new 25/1 cable connection.. much better then 3/256k dslk :-)
- [14:49] Rob Linden: based on the conversation so far, Soft filed a bunch of subtasks for the LLJIRA counterpart to VWR-8049
- [14:49] Debian Akroyd: i like being able to share items with friends..i dont care if i have to pay for them..i just want to modify and change and recreate the item. i hate not being able to do that
- [14:49] Catherine Pfeffer: for the record, the OpenSim server side of inworld creation default permission already runs
- [14:49] Coco Linden: it's a bit confusing because the main jira is a bit of a meta task since so many different areas are involved
- [14:50] Rob Linden: Coco: yeah, we've already encouraged folks to help fix that
- [14:50] Erica Linden: Ah ha! Screengrabs...
- [14:50] Erica Linden: http://www.grabup.com/uploads/1e5f040d642c1504cd4890a78b709010.png?direct
- [14:50] Coco Linden: i'm hoping that we can widen the viewer-sim protocol to take default perms on object creation the same way we did for uploads, and then work on the UI that takes advantage of it.
- [14:51] Erica Linden: I've also got a cute before/after rollover thingie but that's behind the firewall...
- [14:51] Erica Linden: what she said.
- [14:51] Catherine Pfeffer: yes, the petition was basically about inworld creation... but of course if it becomes general it's better (and simpler for the users)
- [14:51] JamieLee Salamander: am sory but i need to go....
- [14:51] Coco Linden: right. erica has been working hard on improving the permissions UI
- [14:52] JamieLee Salamander: goodbye all
- [14:52] Debian Akroyd: bye jamie ;)
- [14:52] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: bye
- [14:52] Erica Linden: I need a dev to help me merge my xml w/whatever is the latest
- [14:52] Erica Linden: looks at coco
- [14:52] Catherine Pfeffer: widening the viewer-sim protocols meant moving ObjectAdd to capabilities, which the client side patch already does
- [14:52] Erica Linden: and it's still gotta get tested in German.
- [14:53] Rob Linden: Erica: you might be able to get one of these fine people to help out
- [14:53] Erica Linden: German can take a nice layout and knock it right to its knees
- [14:53] Erica Linden: oO
- [14:53] Coco Linden: catherine: are you suggesting that all that's needed is viewer-side chante??
- [14:53] Catherine Pfeffer: you need to move from alertXml to the new notifications system Erica ?
- [14:53] Robin Cornelius: ah compound german verbs making very long words?
- [14:53] Zauber Exonar: Having it all client-side may be a bad idea.
- [14:54] Erica Linden: can you make my XUI go in Dazzle? The changes to the Build > General tab are extensive
- [14:54] Catherine Pfeffer: yes coco
- [14:54] Erica Linden: er - silver skin
- [14:54] Triss Gray: I also seem to miss the "default perms on new prims" part in those screenshots?
- [14:54] Catherine Pfeffer: only very little number of lines on the server side to accept a capabilities ObjectAdd with three new unsigned 32 (the permissions)
- [14:55] Q Linden: coco, as I understand it, opensim has implemented a protocol for this by switching the message to caps
- [14:55] Erica Linden: Triss - one database-wrecking paradigm shift at a time!
- [14:55] Coco Linden: well we still need the server-side change
- [14:56] Coco Linden: i'm happy to work with the appropriate server devs on this like i did with upload perm prefs
- [14:56] Erica Linden: I think the word in German for "profile" is "Ohmygoshenthisisalongenworden"
- [14:56] Catherine Pfeffer: i have the LLSD details here : http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/attachment/21821/dump.txt
- [14:57] LucianoFaretra Ibanez: go to dinner :P bye all
- [14:57] Coco Linden: i'll see what i can do to get the new fields used in the server
- [14:58] Catherine Pfeffer: WOW
- [14:58] Coco Linden: that will let you and the other OSS devs work on the viewer-side stuff in parallel with erica and the rest of us
- [14:58] Grunt Ultsch: Have a good bite, Luciano
- [14:58] Zauber Exonar: brb folks, going to be afk for a bit
- [14:58] loopy String: lol
- [14:58] Rob Linden: since we're coming up on the end of the hour, and some of us have to go...let's figure out next steps (and feel free to talk after I go...I don't know who all can stay late)
- [14:58] Catherine Pfeffer: the viewer side stuff is already ready... of course you'll certainly find things to make better ;-)
- [14:59] Coco Linden: i *really* appreciate all your work on the viwer-side stuff, catherine, especially in keeping your patches fresh.
- [14:59] Rob Linden: after this meeting, let's keep the conversation going on the right mailing list. seems like sl-ux@ might be the better of the two
- [15:00] Rob Linden: (sldev@ being the other)
- [15:00] Rob Linden: I'm on both, so i'm indifferent :)
- [15:00] Catharina Jacobus: Cath is the best!
- [15:00] Catherine Pfeffer: ;-) coco yw
- [15:00] Grunt Ultsch: I'm on neither so I am indifferent too
- [15:01] Catharina Jacobus: haha Grunt...
- [15:01] Grunt Ultsch: But I have trust in a good outcome! :)
- [15:01] Rob Linden: let's say sl-ux@ for now
- [15:01] Flandria Connolly: thanks a lot Rob :)
- [15:02] Rob Linden: no prob!
- [15:02] Catherine Pfeffer: Thanks a lot Rob, Erica, Coco, Soft, Q, everyone, and in the disorder ;-)
- [15:02] Q Linden: thanks, all. Fun meeting!
- [15:02] Catharina Jacobus: Thanks a lot Rob and Soft, Erica and Coco and all people here
- [15:02] Rob Linden: thanks everyone! +1 Q
