Caveat

I can't figure out what "Everything that physically changes the parcel will result in an UUID change. Ownership and/or description changes will NOT change the UUID." really means. The UUID doesn't change after terraforming or adding prims. Doesn't change after altering the land desc (as stated) or name or access. Unless the UUID change happens after some indeterminate amount of time, I can't see when it does change. Any ideas? -- Fred Gandt (talk|scripts|contribs) 23:21, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm currently thinking that only subdivide and unite of parcels changes UUIDs. --Zai signature.png (talk|contribs) 23:43, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi Zai. I wondered that myself but didn't want to break my parcel. I only just put it together and kinda like it the way it is. Makes sense tho. So realistically the caveat would (if the sub/join thing is right - "UUID only changes on new creation of a parcel by either blah or blah". I can test if someone is willing to provide a FULL list of ALL the things that need to be tried. I would hate to run what I thought were all the tests and edit the caveats only to be told that I had missed something and it was all pointless. -- Fred Gandt (talk|scripts|contribs) 00:09, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Heyas :)
There's a couple of things that we wouldn't be able to test. Like region rename, region move or when the region is added to or removed from an estate. But I guess that none of that should affect the parcel UUID. Divide and join seem to be the only logical cases where such an incident would occur. I wouldn't even know what else to test, since I know that certain things (name change, desc change, flag change (build/voice/script/...), media change, etc) don't affect parcel UUIDs. If you want to test everything:
I can't find a test script for land tools, but you might try any option in About Land, the Region-Estate window, as well as the land build tools. Tho I think that might be overkill... Attending the office hour of a Linden who's involved with server development could be cheaper :)
Or change to the best of our knowledge and wait for someone to correct it in case they disagree.

I likes the last one. Best guess (better than at present) and see how it goes. Awesome. -- Fred Gandt (talk|scripts|contribs) 01:39, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I had the same question. I left a message for it's contributer, Sasun_Steinbeck -- Strife (talk|contribs) 23:37, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Uses of UUID

If one has a parcel's UUID, can it be used to look up other information about the parcel, even just to get its location? From all I can see its only use is to determine whether two positions are part of the same parcel or not. —The preceding unsigned comment was added on 08:49, 3 September 2011 by Samm Florian

That is one big use for it. Applications like security or mapping were much harder to pull off without the parcel ID, there are cases when all the other fields combined could be non-unique. URLs of the format http://world.secondlife.com/place/parcel-uuid-goes-here can be useful too. --Cerise Resident 10:30, 3 September 2011 (PDT)
