SL Certification "Second Life Mentoring - Basic Level"
Overview
Those of us who assist residents as part of a help group have all seen those who have made serious errors in communication. The idea here is codify not just what helpers need to know technically, but also what they need to know to communicate the information. It doesn't do much good to give people information if one is being snide and insulting while doing it. I have actually seen "mentors" yelling at people (in text) that they aren't "going to baby them, or help them find things in the interface." Personally, I consider that the "hit them over the head with a rock until they learn" method of teaching.
Audience
People and organizations who want to help others.
Pre-requisites
No prerequisites at this time.
Criteria
Describe the skills and knowledge necessary to mentor competently and effectively.
Mentor Skillset
These are my initial suggestions of what a new resident needs to know. That means this is what a helper should be qualified to teach. Please comment.
- Communication Skillset
- Leaving the ego at the door: understanding the necessity of focusing on the person being helped.
- Communicating with people from other cultures: understanding that words such as "free" don't mean the same thing in other languages as they do in English; that humor in one culture is only confusing in another culture because of the differences in context
- Describing things accurately: techniques for describing procedures
- Knowing your limits: realizing the limits of effective communication
- Knowing when to file an abuse report: understanding the Terms of Service well enough to know when an abuse report is desirable; knowing the Report Abuse interface well enough to describe how to file an abuse report accurately and efficiently
