- [2009/05/07 12:04 SLT] Noelle Linden: all right then, Torley, I think everybody would like to know since when you have you been in Second Life and why you first joined
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Torley Linden: that of course is a FANTASTIC question...
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Yann Dufaux: tahnk torley its done for me , i have add olmstead :)
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Yann Dufaux: thank*
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Surfaqua Oh: bonsoir, hello
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Torley Linden: i've been in Second Life since September 2004. i joined because it was a very hard time during my life, i was a music composer before but had hearing problems, so i was looking for something new to do.
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Yann Dufaux: bonsoir Surf :)
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Torley Linden: i began to read about the future, about what humans might become many years from now, and i looked through many cyberpunk novels. but after awhile, this felt lonely.
- [2009/05/07 12:05 SLT] Laurent Bechir: salut salut
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Danica Linden: hi guys
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Torley Linden: i wanted to share my experiences with other people. i got broadband Internet not too long ago, so...
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Danica Linden: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Zai Lynch: yay danica ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Torley Linden: i looked up what sorts of multiplayer games existed. and i found out about There and Second Life. ultimately i preferred SL, so i stayed here. :D
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Flemming Congrejo: Hi fellow translators and Torley
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Noelle Linden: so you were a music composer?
- [2009/05/07 12:06 SLT] Danica Linden: (hugz zai)
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, i started on classical piano but then moved to electronic music.
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: awww you like music too? really itneressing
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Zai Lynch: *hugz* ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Torley Linden: incidentally some of my favorite musicians are French and German (like Yann Tiersen, Kraftwerk)
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Noelle Linden: are you still composing?
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Noelle Linden: Yann Tiersen?
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Noelle Linden: wooahhh
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Torley Linden: i've started to get back into music but i don't have all that much time for it presently, so it's a hobby. it's amazing how far some devices have come in the past decade -- others haven't advanced as far as i would like.
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Ourasi Ferraris: ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:07 SLT] Ann Congrejo: Danica - sit :) lots of spaces... :)
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Danica Linden: meeow

- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: Mrrrouuuu (have a sit:) )
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Danica Linden: pursrrr
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Torley Linden: it's good to be petted! haha
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Torley Linden: i have 2 cats and i pet them very much
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Noelle Linden: so... how did you join Linden Lab?
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Yann Dufaux: meow greeting Danica! :p
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Ann Congrejo: cats are great!
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hahaha torley
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Ann Congrejo: (like many animals)
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Danica Linden: me two: Lulu and Clio
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] Danica Linden: I think I look like Clio a little
- [2009/05/07 12:08 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: Meeeoww
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Danica Linden: lol
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Ann Congrejo: lol - pictures on your first life page :)
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Torley Linden: i actually had a crazy dream which told me, when i wake up, i must apply for Linden Lab. at the time, resumes were still accepted on notecard, so i typed out a letter, attached some funny pictures of my inworld adventures, and sent in my application to be a Linden Liaison.
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Torley Linden: at this time, i had been spending most of my day on Second Life (since i wasn't working a job or doing much else)
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Danica Linden: no way! reallY?
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Torley Linden: and after several weeks of the interview process, i was hired. yes, i'm serious!
- [2009/05/07 12:09 SLT] Danica Linden: cool
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Ann Congrejo: and now you are stuck
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Torley Linden: i had already been familiar with some Lindens because of chats in the old Welcome Area and such, so some of them already knew me and my inworld antics ;)
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Ann Congrejo: :))
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Torley Linden: haha yes, always a part of SL now
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Torley Linden: it was a very natural progression for me, growing this way.
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Noelle Linden: what do you do at LL exactly?
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: nice way if i can use *way*
- [2009/05/07 12:10 SLT] Isabele Auer: Can I have the same dream? ;-)))
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Torley Linden: right now my title is Resident Enlightenment Manager. that sounds fancy but it means i help teach our beloved Residents about how to use Second Life better and have more fun, to enjoy their experience. :D
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Torley Linden: you sure can Isabele :D
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Noelle Linden: :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Ann Congrejo: typical american companies isn't iot? (being in IBM )
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Rika Linden: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Torley Linden: my primary focus is on multimedia and communications tools, so i handle things like video tutorials as you all know, as well as the Message of the Day and i'm frequently on http://blogs.secondlife.com
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: do you hae that title for real?
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Ann Congrejo: having fancy titles to all :)))
- [2009/05/07 12:11 SLT] Torley Linden: i really do, Thibaud, our very nice Human Resources people helped approve it after i had a formal definition
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Danica Linden: lol
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Flemming Congrejo: REM
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Torley Linden: i had to list specifically what were the requirements for this title. i do a lot of promotion and evangelism for Second Life too, showing what's possible.
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: soooo cool!
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Torley Linden: and i help a lot of other Lindens learn tools we need to do the job, like how to record voice chat for meetings.
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Ann Congrejo: now that was almost an IBM phrase - REM
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Noelle Linden: you are part of the Documentation team right?
- [2009/05/07 12:12 SLT] Torley Linden: i'm very thankful to the elder Lindens who helped me learn the ropes here, when i started LL was under 100 people, i think. now, over 300!
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: hahaha
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] Danica Linden: yeah, I think the count is 314
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, that's right. and Documentation includes everything from the Knowledge Base @ http://secondlife.com/kb to videos @ http://secondlife.com/video -- all about how to use SL. Doc Team is small right now, just 4 members: Jon, Jeremy, Kate, and me.
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: growing team :)
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] Torley Linden: really explaining, demystifying, and perhaps most importantly, empowering Residents to teach each other with what we have learned
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: badly for me i don't live in USa so i can't join .... still adream :)
- [2009/05/07 12:13 SLT] Torley Linden: MasterJ we have international positions!
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Danica Linden: you know, you are looking at our International Documentation Team right here, Torley
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Torley Linden: oh yes that's so true Danica!
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Noelle Linden: that's right
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Danica Linden: most people here
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Danica Linden: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Torley Linden: teams and definitions have shifted over time and i'm glad to be here with all of you
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Torley Linden: it's fantastic you're helping explain SL so more of the world can understand
- [2009/05/07 12:14 SLT] Lisa Lowe: is typing her notecard and digging up some naughty pics ... ;)
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Noelle Linden: so Torley, do you stil have time to play in SL ?
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Torley Linden: MasterJ and everyone else interested, http://lindenlab.com/employment has our job listings
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Torley Linden: yes of course Noelle! i insist on it. there must be work but also a lot of fun. especially on the weekends.
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Torley Linden: i met my wife in Second Life, too. so many wondrous things have happened.
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Torley Linden: now we live together in first life and go exploring together.
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Dawny Daviau: Unfortunate not always you hear back from LL.
- [2009/05/07 12:15 SLT] Noelle Linden: wwwooohhh
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Torley Linden: i take many pictures of my adventures, and they are all here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/torley/sets/72157605740036376/
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Torley Linden: well, the newest 300 are, anyway
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Noelle Linden: thank you!
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Torley Linden: :D
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Torley Linden: it's SO important to understand things firsthand from how Residents see the world, some things you don't come across when looking for them, but you notice in casual behavior.
- [2009/05/07 12:16 SLT] Torley Linden: for example, over the last few weeks, i've been doing more shopping at Xstreet, and i even listed an item. i noticed some bugs in there which should be fixed.
- [2009/05/07 12:17 SLT] Torley Linden: i have tools to help me quickly note these things down like Things (beautiful Mac to-do list, if you're looking for one)
- [2009/05/07 12:17 SLT] Torley Linden: i could go on and on about productivity, haha, but i'm ready for the next question, thank you.
- [2009/05/07 12:17 SLT] Noelle Linden: :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:17 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: i prefer to shop on xstreet problem was for transfering L£ into Xstreet one time i lost 1000l$ awwww now i really wait 10 misn for be sure all is rezzed and lagg free ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:18 SLT] Noelle Linden: One of our French residents wanted to know how you have built your "web identity", and how have you made your choices: colors (pink and green), totem (watermelon), famous "friendly greeting" etc.?
- [2009/05/07 12:18 SLT] Torley Linden: i LOVE these questions
- [2009/05/07 12:18 SLT] Noelle Linden: how did you choose all these?
- [2009/05/07 12:18 SLT] Torley Linden: i've always liked watermelon since i was a little boy, my Dad used to tell me about how he knew of "robin hood of watermelon" in China, and very extreme colors attract me
- [2009/05/07 12:18 SLT] Torley Linden: so the two went together,
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Noelle Linden: :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: as i started getting on the Internet i noticed it was very simple to put green and pink together
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: and it was very memorable, because other people would always refer to it
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Yann Dufaux: :))
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: so i decided, "hey, i'll keep it easy for other people! no need to complicate their heads remembering who i am"
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: and then in Second Life, this opened up so many possibilities, the very thing of having an AVATAR
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: i could WEAR GREEN AND PINK ALL THE TIME OMG
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Blaise Timtam: lol
- [2009/05/07 12:19 SLT] Torley Linden: and i got sooooo excited, i began to build watermelon houses (not possible in real life most of the time, zoning laws hahaha)
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Isabele Auer: And your textures are often in the same colors , funny :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Yann Dufaux: your world, your imagination ;-)
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: and i'm very thankful for the many watermelon gifts i've received
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Dawny Daviau: lol
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Yann Dufaux: hehe :)
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: haha yes some of them are Isabele, and i did a WHOLE set of green and a WHOLE set of pink, but i like to challenge myself by using other colors too
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: for example, TRIVIA:
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: in Second Life 1.6 preview grid, i started a new avatar named "Torange"
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: she was dressed in ORANGE and BLUE
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: i had a very funny time with this
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: sadly she derezzed when that grid went away, but here's picture proof:
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] Torley Linden: http://www.flickr.com/photos/torley/2477692294/
- [2009/05/07 12:20 SLT] You decline ****THE YARD AT HONIE ISLE, Honie Isle (170, 146, 22) from A group member named Till Pierce.
- [2009/05/07 12:21 SLT] Torley Linden: i think personal branding is really important because it makes you easier to relate to, very fun, and like i said, simplifies memory :)
- [2009/05/07 12:21 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: got it! :)
- [2009/05/07 12:21 SLT] Torley Linden: so it's fantastic each of us expresses ourselves through avatars
- [2009/05/07 12:21 SLT] Yann Dufaux: nice:)
- [2009/05/07 12:21 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: so next time i send you a mushroom in pink and green ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, haha, i'm not ONLY about pink and green but they are my faves :)
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Noelle Linden: Torley, i think many people here wonder if you took acting classes?
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Yann Dufaux: hahahaha
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Lisa Lowe: lol
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Noelle Linden: :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:22 SLT] Torley Linden: i did! just in high school. but it has more to do with being self-taught and having a passion for expressing myself
- [2009/05/07 12:23 SLT] Torley Linden: i think what really helped me was having multimedia -- different forms, like i've written short stories, i painted pictures, made music...
- [2009/05/07 12:23 SLT] Torley Linden: if you put all these things together you have a better understanding of how humans can communicate
- [2009/05/07 12:23 SLT] Noelle Linden: when you do your videos, do you improvise?
- [2009/05/07 12:23 SLT] Torley Linden: i generally favor what i call a "hybrid" approach
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: i certainly have a lot of improvisation in my videos, yes!
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Noelle Linden: tell us about it!
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: but to be a talented improviser...
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: you need to know the "rules of the game"
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: for instance, i improvise piano music
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Noelle Linden: what are they? ;-)
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: you need to know the different chords, which melodies can go together, and how all the piese of the puzzle fit
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: *pieces
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Torley Linden: and once you can break it down like that, like a skilled cook...
- [2009/05/07 12:24 SLT] Noelle Linden: so you need to be an expert
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: you can combine parts and rearrange them
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: i wouldn't necessarily say "expert" but it's ESSENTIAL to experiment
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: play with different things, don't be afraid to try what other people don't do.
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Isabele Auer: Your piano peaces improvisations are great
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: the more you do it, you'll learn day by day
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: thanks Isabele :)
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: and so with my videos, i have a basic idea of where i want to go
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: like for instance, specific topics
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: yes it's ^^ i can say that i follow a videao and try to do teh same it's took me nearly 1 hour for only 2 mins of video ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Yann Dufaux: hehe, i listen this eatch time if i need relxe :)
- [2009/05/07 12:25 SLT] Torley Linden: if i do a video on building with sculpted prims, i may go off on a humorous tangent, but i HAVE to make it about that subject
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Torley Linden: and the KEY points to learn.
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Yann Dufaux: relaxe, sorry
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Torley Linden: sometimes i come across surprises and things i didn't expect to see
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Torley Linden: some of you may notice funny IMs that i reply to in the middle of my videos
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Torley Linden: i like this because it keeps it real -- this is actually what happens in SL!
- [2009/05/07 12:26 SLT] Torley Linden: i'm a big lover of culture, both the special SL culture we're created, and how we bring "real world" culture into SL... so having my own lexicon and flavor of style to videos is top priority
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Torley Linden: and when funny things happen, i REACT and capture it on film!
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Torley Linden: so you can all smile :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Kede Cerise: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Laure Farella: we do ;o)))
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Ourasi Ferraris: :))
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] Lisa Lowe: IT works wel indeed in your video's :)
- [2009/05/07 12:27 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: yes i like when you reply IM or you say something about the others around :)
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: hahaha
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, i don't like to have "dry" situations that are fake
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: some people who make training videos like that are boring :(
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: i don't agree with that method because it doesn't really show the product as it is
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: i want to be earnest and candid about Second Life
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: especially teh situation on teh particle tutorial videao was funny
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Lisa Lowe: exactly
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Torley Linden: which situation was that, MasterJ?
- [2009/05/07 12:28 SLT] Lisa Lowe: keeps it interesting
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: someone make a big particle thing :)
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: Talking of videos, I have heard that we might be able to help localizing them. Am I right ,
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Torley Linden: hahahaha oh yeah
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Rafale we are going to get to more of that soon!
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] link Kiranov: good afternoon !
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Dawny Daviau: "Helllooooooo!"
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Dawny Daviau: link
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Lisa Lowe: hi link
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: aoo sorry typping badly
- [2009/05/07 12:29 SLT] Noelle Linden: Torley, as you know a few of our French residents have "redone" some of your "basic" videos into Frencg
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Noelle Linden: *frencg
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Noelle Linden: ahh
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Noelle Linden: French :-)
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] link Kiranov: it's here the meeting for AA ? :)
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Torley Linden: yes! i have watched some as given to me on YouTUbe. unfortunately my french is not fluent but i really am thankful for this!
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] JLG Chevalier: hi all - bonsoir tout le monde
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Torley Linden: as time unfolds i am all too happy to help get the word out about them too!
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Noelle Linden: they did an amazing job I think
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: (hello to all coming now)
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Torley Linden: i am really proud of you guys :D
- [2009/05/07 12:30 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: thx!
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Noelle Linden: what would be your top 3 advice to them?
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Torley Linden: they are on http://www.youtube.com/groups_videos?name=LocalisationSL if anyone hasn't seen them yet :)
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Danica Linden: yeah, our CT Project memebers do amazing things :)
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Gally Young: thanks torley )))
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Laurent Bechir: yes, thank you :)
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Torley Linden: oh, that's a really hard question! depends on what they need most; so it'd say one big piece of advice is, feel free to ask me questions, hahaha! :D
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Noelle Linden: A big Thank you to Laurent, Gally and Laure
- [2009/05/07 12:31 SLT] Torley Linden: let me know how i can help you best
- [2009/05/07 12:32 SLT] Torley Linden: i'd say certainly, have fun when doing them. it needs to have spirit from your heart, which i do sense.
- [2009/05/07 12:32 SLT] Lisa Lowe: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:33 SLT] Noelle Linden: One important task at this point is also to define the most important vidtuts to localize?
- [2009/05/07 12:33 SLT] Torley Linden: yes! well certainly the BASICS, those without a doubt. also... in the coming weeks...
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: as Linden Lab continues to make the new user experience friendlier...
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Laurent Bechir: all :)))
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: i may be doing videos for Xstreet and stuff like that.
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: so i think those, the ones that get seen and used by most, by newcomers, are overall the most important
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: i'd be very, very interested to know if there are any hot local issues for French, German, and other Resis...
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: which aren't so hot for English speakers, but important in other parts of the world for some reason
- [2009/05/07 12:34 SLT] Torley Linden: i am very very curious about that.
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] Torley Linden: and in those cases, i'd say, fill those needs and localize those among the first
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hot issue? hmmmm if you speak about 1.23 ^^ hot can be a too light word :P
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: ok i stop joking :)
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] Torley Linden: i've always done my video tutorials based on those needs; if they're not needed they're not watched, after all.
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] Noelle Linden: good point
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] Torley Linden: so i always like to ask "what's really important to you?" and on a serious note MasterJ, yes, 1.23 will also have some vidtuts to explain new features
- [2009/05/07 12:35 SLT] Torley Linden: even little things that change but are hard to describe in words, like the camera sliders rearrangement
- [2009/05/07 12:36 SLT] Torley Linden: there's also a new Bulk Upload permissions i believe
- [2009/05/07 12:36 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: well maybe there is a particulary point into localization ... one need also to learn english term
- [2009/05/07 12:36 SLT] Torley Linden: ahhh yes Lalwende, i'm wondering, which English terms are also used without translation? is "rez"? or "prim"? seems like "notecard" is.
- [2009/05/07 12:36 SLT] Lisa Lowe: Also Bulk Permissions in Edit content
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: i think Adult Mature and PG lol
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Lisa, that may be what i was thinking of, i have to check again
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Lisa Lowe: ah ok :)
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Torley Linden: ohh yes, the Adult Continent stuff is also important.
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Laurent Bechir: prim is prim or primitive
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: loading is really ussed too yes i prefer to say load in french than chargement ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Torley Linden: thanks Laurent, that's good to know.
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Isabele Auer: ah ah
- [2009/05/07 12:37 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: i mean most of time a forign need to know the term in his own language but also into english cause on many occastion the english term will remain
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] Torley Linden: i know some of my Quebec friends say "bon fin semaine" but some French speaking people from elsewhere actually say "bon weekend"
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Lalwende, that's true too
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] Blaise Timtam: I sometime wonder if to much localisation will not create languages gethos in SL
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] Yann Dufaux: Quebec? :p
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: depend torley bonne fin de semaine is used on thursday or wed the most of time ;)
- [2009/05/07 12:38 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: good point Blaise
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Torley Linden: ohhh i have much to learn about that, MasterJ :)
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Yann Dufaux: i'm from quebec :)
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: i agree with Blaise
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: normalybon week-end is only on friday or .. hehe duriing week-end of course
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Noelle Linden: Torley, I think ome technical difficulties our vounteers have is to localize the text that appears in your videos
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Lisa Lowe: fin de semaine = end of the week
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Kede Cerise: That is all the difference between academic and vernacular languages
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: Depends what you are trying to achieve in SL. Localisation can help non English speakers to get by and actually do something else than just go to discos and buy stuff
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Noelle Linden: subtitles
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Torley Linden: ahhh yes i would love easier ways for that to be changed, Noelle!
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Gally Young: when we dubbing you vidtut indeed )
- [2009/05/07 12:39 SLT] Torley Linden: so here's the situation with that, i'll explain:
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Yann Dufaux: lisa , its simple to said weekend , for trannslation of fin de semaine :)
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Yann Dufaux: hehe
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Noelle Linden: I'll let Gally, Laurent and Laure talk for themselves!
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Torley Linden: there isn't an easy intechangeable format for videos. i use Sony Vegas, do any of you, Gally, Laurent, Laure? if so, i could try uploading a project file and you could see if editing it is easy enough.
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Laurent Bechir: I use Screenflow
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Torley Linden: the problem with that is those project files may be very big (hundreds of megabytes, or even gigabytes)
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Torley Linden: ahhh ok
- [2009/05/07 12:40 SLT] Torley Linden: the next best thing i can think of...
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Torley Linden: is to look through specific videos, render them again WITHOUT any subtitles
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Zai Lynch: youtube offers a new option to display some kind of hovertext above their videos which can change during the vid
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Laure Farella blushes and melt in the ground
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Torley Linden: and that way you can place your own.
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Gally Young: sony vegas for me )
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Torley Linden: yeah Zai i like that they've added that, problem is it isn't portable to other formats like the desktop-downloadable version, or Vimeo :(
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hehehe Laure^^
- [2009/05/07 12:41 SLT] Zai Lynch: :-S
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Torley Linden: sooo if you want me to try to render some of them, like the Basics (Bases) or others with NO text, send me URLs to those videos and i'll let you know. you can also email me ( torley@lindenlab.com ) or use the Web tab of my profile to reach me. i'll make sure this gets my attention.
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Laurent Bechir: In fact I don't care too much about subtitles since I love too much to do the video from scratch :)
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Torley Linden: awww Laurent =)
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Laure Farella: yes pleas Torley !
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] link Kiranov: subtitle is a better way because french text on the screen must be huge no ?
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Torley Linden: i can try to look in my archives and find them, they should all be there. i appreciate that, Laurent, and your fun Loco Poco avatar =)
- [2009/05/07 12:42 SLT] Torley Linden: link, yes, it's troublesome to block out the existing text elements
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Laurent Bechir: It's like trying to write a short story
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] link Kiranov: yes
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Laurent Bechir: for me
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Torley Linden: my hope in the future is that videos can be as easily deconstructed online as, say, a word processing document
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Torley Linden: it will take a lot more bandwidth and computer power
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Torley Linden: but eventually will come
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hmmm french isn't really more than english it's really different if you use japanese text into french
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Laure Farella: but at least, some are too old .. and better to make new one ..
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Torley Linden: yes that too, Laure!
- [2009/05/07 12:43 SLT] Torley Linden: with some major changes coming up later in the year, i'll need to update more videos...
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Laure Farella: sure ;o)
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Torley Linden: i call it "rolling armor", they're not meant to be there FOREVER, just to help NOW
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: well maybe there is another solution .. just record the voice into foreign language and send them to you Torley ..thus no need of working on original video to localize them
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Torley Linden: but yes, Gally, Laurent, Laure, if you have any specific videos you want in versions WITHOUT the text titles, just let me know now or email me :) and i'll try to get those up for you
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] link Kiranov: yes Alwende better way :)
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: I wonder if it would not be better to make videos in every language. I am just thinking of the interface which is localised. Subtitling a video in English with an English interface is nto hot for a Spaniard or a French
- [2009/05/07 12:44 SLT] Laure Farella: sure we will ;o) thx
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Gally Young: Lalwende it can be hard to adjust the voice on the video... believe me ))
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Laurent Bechir: One thing I've learnt from your advices on screencasts is to do it over and over again, which I do on each video :)
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Torley Linden: Lalwende, that's a really intriguing idea, and would work if the time code is correct. (since digital audio can drift out if not recorded at the same sample rate. here we get into technical geekery.)
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Laure Farella: stop complaining gally ;o)))))))))
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Torley Linden: practice never gets useless :)
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: you are right Rafale .. get your point
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Torley Linden: but already @ LL, i may be teaching more Lindens how to make video tutorials soon because, as i'm thankful for you guys, and i simply can't do it all... so i teach my skills, share my secrets
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: can be funny if recording is too fast :)
- [2009/05/07 12:45 SLT] Torley Linden: whatever you need to know to make better vidtuts, i'm happy to help
- [2009/05/07 12:46 SLT] Noelle Linden: Thank you Torley
- [2009/05/07 12:46 SLT] Torley Linden: =^_^=
- [2009/05/07 12:46 SLT] Laurent Bechir: but sometime I don't know when to stop nevre being happy enough with the quality of my work :)
- [2009/05/07 12:46 SLT] Lisa Lowe: The best localized videos would be the ones without any text. (something like Charly Chaplin or so :)
- [2009/05/07 12:46 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hehehe Laurent like me with sculpty actually ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Rafale, i would LOVE it if i could record not hardcoded graphics, but a fluid vector metadata of some sort, so just about everything of the video can be deconstructed and rearranged, remixed, edited, etc.
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Gally Young: dubbing is easier and quicker, but new videos in the localized viewer is the best solution indeed )
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Torley Linden: Laurent, that's always a tough question. i'd say, get 80-90% of the way there, and move onto something else so you keep improving your skills. i think it can be dangerous to keep working on one piece of art too long.
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Blaise Timtam: stop and publish before it's obsolete Laurent
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Laure Farella: yes gally, i agree, but some old could help to find a good start
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Torley Linden: video needs SO much more bandwidth than text, and Second Life is very photo-rich so we're still in the infancy of making videos. you guys are pioneers!
- [2009/05/07 12:47 SLT] Torley Linden: hahaha Blaise, yes. GET IT OUT THE DOOR! SHIP IT!
- [2009/05/07 12:48 SLT] Torley Linden: as a general policy i try not to take longer than 2 days on a video. this isn't a hard rule, some need more time to "gel" the parts or do research beforehand.
- [2009/05/07 12:48 SLT] Laurent Bechir: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:48 SLT] Torley Linden: but find your own personal balance between being effective and maintaining high quality.
- [2009/05/07 12:49 SLT] Torley Linden: some times at LL i've had weeks where ALL i did was videos (maybe 1 or 2 meetings) and i LOVE those times; it isn't for everyone but i'm very intense when i get into being creative.
- [2009/05/07 12:49 SLT] link Kiranov: we can try ? with an older Torley video ? maybe cheap but we can try ?
- [2009/05/07 12:49 SLT] Torley Linden: what do you want to try, link? :)
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] link Kiranov: subtitle
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] Torley Linden: yes, if there's a specific video you want to try (which i remove subtitles from) let me know
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] link Kiranov: french voice on your videos
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] Isabele Auer: Sorry , we have to go :-(, nice to meet you Torley and Bravo , Merci Noelle, au evoir tout le monde
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] Isabele Auer: take care
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] Torley Linden: take care Isabele, thanks for being with us!
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] Laure Farella: bye bye isabelle
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] link Kiranov: au revoir
- [2009/05/07 12:50 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: a bientôt Isa
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Yann Dufaux: à bientpôt !!!
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Yann Dufaux: oopss
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Muck Woodget: bye all, thanks Torley !!! and take care :-) Hugs
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Surfaqua Oh: thanks torley
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Noelle Linden: Since we only have 10mn left, is there anything else you would love to ask Torley?
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Torley Linden: *hugz*
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: (trop bien ton avatar suraqua au passge)
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Yann Dufaux: thank torley!! :)
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: f
- [2009/05/07 12:51 SLT] Torley Linden: oh yes please go ahead and ask, i'm happy to indulge your curiosities!
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Torley Linden: (please DO send friendships to my fun alt, Torley Olmstead, i'm sorry i don't accept them on my Linden account)
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: I must go too
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Gally Young: The most important thing, I think is to define the main subjects to cover with the localized vidtuts
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: bye all
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Laure Farella: torley, could you agree that your videos or the new ones, could be on the HI ?
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Rafale Kamachi: lovely to have met you
- [2009/05/07 12:52 SLT] Laurent Bechir: do you like cheese with watermelon ? It's very good :)
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Gally, i'm sure we'd be happy to discuss this further with you
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Gally Young: we have localized the Basics, and we must define our new roadmap :)
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Noelle Linden: that would be great !!
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Gally Young: okey Torley ツ
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Torley Linden: Laure, i think we may be changing parts of the new user experience, but the videos will be featured more on the website. details on that are still tentative, so... "we'll see" :)
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Noelle Linden: they have done the 13 basics
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Torley Linden: Laurent, i've never tried that before. i like some kinds of cheese very much.
- [2009/05/07 12:53 SLT] Laure Farella: argh .. ok ..
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Torley Linden: i admit not being fond of blue cheese because it tastes like weird soap to me but i like cheddar and pepperjack
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: haha
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: Torley I have a question just for fun, do you still happen to discover some feature in the viewer you were not aware of? :)
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Torley Linden: on some of the Help Islands i know there is a link to the video page on the website, http://secondlife.com/video :)
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Laurent Bechir: it's from Egypt, salty cheese from there and watermelon
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Laurent Bechir: :)
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: c'est quoi pour un fromage de fou? ^^
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Torley Linden: for instance, i didn't know that you can edit XML strings to automatically fill in the postcard To: name
- [2009/05/07 12:54 SLT] Torley Linden: hahaha YES THIBAUD I OFTEN DO! i like to stumble and tinker with everything, and so many little secrets are to be had
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Laure Farella: but could be better to see them directly on the HI, if i'm a noob i'm here do sicover not to be send on a web site ?? ;o)
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Torley Linden: (oops those are in a different order)
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Laure Farella: *to discover sorry
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: nice to know i'm not alone lol
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Yann Dufaux: loll torly i see an picture of you in flickr , since 3 or 4 week, how many time you can't sleep before take this :)
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Torley Linden: yes Laure, well, there are problems with playing videos inworld too. in the future, i hope we have native interactive Flash support above and beyond QuickTime. that would be GREAT.
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Noelle Linden: Agree!
- [2009/05/07 12:55 SLT] Torley Linden: Yann, haha, i like to have long days filled with plenty of activities. i get too bored otherwise.
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] Torley Linden: Flash would open the way to more dynamic translations of inworld goods too.
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] link Kiranov: I found Vidtuts group too quiet ! :))
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] Laure Farella: but sorry if i insist a littel .. we already can have videos on our land, why can't we put something like 10 basics ones on HI ,
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: Torley i agree with flas if i can say *the others* have already done that we must pray for have it fast :)
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] Torley Linden: bringing up a lot of this stuff is important, because it sets the tone for the future.
- [2009/05/07 12:56 SLT] Yann Dufaux: well, i use the space navigator cause your video tutorial now :)
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] Laurent Bechir: where do you host your itunes videos ?
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] link Kiranov: youtube ? :))
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] Torley Linden: Laure, i tried an experiment with a rotating movie player before but -- too many usability problems. having 10 parcels with 10 videos may not be the best use of space. however if someone else has done a substantially useful experiment with this, i'm all too happy to learn from it
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] Yann Dufaux: google video, its same of youtube, no? :)
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] Torley Linden: Yann, the SpaceNavigator is GREAT. lots of fun.
- [2009/05/07 12:57 SLT] Torley Linden: i always upload my videos to YouTube, it's the most popular in the world
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Torley Linden: however, for quality overall, (non-HD stuff), i think Vimeo is the best
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Torley Linden: i was on blip.tv too but had too many idiosyncracies and strange problems with them
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Laure Farella: we have one torley !! i'm sure it's possible, right gally ?? ;o))
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Laurent Bechir: but you had a channel in Itunes store at a time ?
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Torley Linden: Laure, oh where is it? i think i may have heard of this before.
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Yann Dufaux: Trley, yes its very nice to take too many snapshot , but for build i need more explaine because i tried this and i can't lol
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Lisa Lowe: Torley. Many at the HI's still often ask "what is SL and what is here to do?". Can you make a longer video that shows the many aspects of SL?
- [2009/05/07 12:58 SLT] Torley Linden: yes! there was an iTunes feed but it was hard to update, i think though we may revive that in the future. different Lindens have talked about a better overall communications set of channels, and rich media like video, podcasts will sure be part of it.
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Laure Farella: oh well i just mean that we can do that .. that's surelly possible , gally stop sleeping you know that better than me ;o)
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Gally Young: we cand create parcell dedicated to on newbie with one TV where the newbie can choose the channel (vidtuts)
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Torley Linden: Lisa, that's one of my favorite questions. there's been several projects that would've called for a video like that, and i was standing by to help. but plans changed, and priorities shifted.
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Torley Linden: there'll be some big changes i can't go into detail about but yes, a general overview would be very nice.
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Torley Linden: i know There.com has one :)
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Yann Dufaux: how, Torley do you make a compress of your video in dvix or other format or its original frap onley?
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] MasterJ Chaplin: hmm streaming is an idea too
- [2009/05/07 12:59 SLT] Torley Linden: i'd go ahead and make one but i don't want to get in trouble, especially with everything else i have to work on, ha ha ha. but it's important, i agree.
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Lisa Lowe: it needs to be on the HI's and the Welcome area's
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Noelle Linden: guys... sorry to interrupt but it is 1 pm already :-(
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Torley Linden: Yann, i use Sony Vegas to export into QuickTime Photo-JPEG .mov. its native H.264 support sucks :( so then i open it in QuickTime and export has H.264 MP4. if you open any of my videos and inspect the properties, you can see.
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Torley Linden: all the details are there, and this has been lovely!
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Yann Dufaux: Okey :)
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Torley Linden: and btw you can get downloadable copies of ALL videos from http://torley.com/files/vidtuts/
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] Noelle Linden: Torley, thank you so much for coming!!!!
- [2009/05/07 13:00 SLT] link Kiranov: very nice video "100000meters"
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Torley Linden: if you have a download accelerator feel free to slurp them all down, it's like 10GB
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Laurent Bechir: thank you
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Torley Linden: thank you SOOO much for having me and for these delightful questions!
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Thibaud Merlin: I was sure we would come short of time!!!
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Gally Young: thanks torley )

- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Lalwende Leakey: well i have done plenty of test .. you get much better quality with VirtualDUB than with fraps
- [2009/05/07 13:01 SLT] Simone Linden: Thanks, Torley. This was great!!

- [2009/05/07 13:02 SLT] Torley Linden: Lalwende, oh, for initial capture i use Camtasia, sometimes Lossless. FRAPS has problems capturing some cursors so i use it for machinima, not tutorials tho.
