Definition

A group in Second Life is an organisation which consits of at least two Residents.[KB]
Groups got a moderatable groupchat, at least two (and up to ten) roles with different abilities and are able to own land and items. Members in special roles can send notices to all groupmembers and can create proposals where others are able to vote. Any Resident can be a member of up to 42 different groups.

About joining and leaving, creating and deleting, inviting and kicking

You can easily join open groups by searching them[KB] and pressing the Join (L$X) button[1] in the groups info tab. In case there is no Join (L$X) button at the info tab of the group you're looking for, the group is either a closed one and you can only join when you got an invitation, or you are already a member of the group.

You can ensure that by ejecting all current members of the group and setting the group to a closed group (so no new members join). Once your group is disbanded, there is no way to get it back[KB] and the name can't be taken again.[KB]

Basics and Glossary

The Resident who created a group is called the Founder of the group and is automatically in the Owner[KB] role at the beginning. However, the Founder is also able to leave the Owner role.

Every member in the group is member of the Everyone role. Owner and Everyone role are the only two roles which can't be renamed. Owners always have all available abilities in the group.

Groups roles & abilities

Here is an image of the list of group roles and their default abilities.

Group Role Abilities

Group Roles are the templates used to grant group members particular permissions within a group, such as being able to invite new members or to send group text notices. Every member of a group has at least one role (Everyone).

Abilities are specific permissions related to the group’s function that are able to be assigned to roles. Some are very simple – being able to invite new members, for instance – and some are complex, like Pay group liabilities and receive group dividends, which makes that member one of those responsible for paying a group’s fees (and also grants them a share of any L$ the group might make, as a dividend).

This is a list of all of the abilities a group role might have in the order that they’re listed in the Viewer; abilities are organized in sections by themes (like parcel settings or chat access).

Groups and Money

Groups do not have an account of their own, instead all group liabilities (such as land tier) and assets (such as money paid to a group-deeded object) are distributed among all members who have the ability "Pay group liabilities and receive group dividends". This ability can be found under "Accounting".

Group dividends are sent to eligible members approximately every 24-48 hours.

Beware: objects which are deeded to group will pay the whole group, not the original owner, if they receive money.

If the group is given L$, but the total L$ received is less than the number of people who will receive a share of the dividends, the L$ deposited will be held in escrow until it can be evenly divided among eligible group members. For example, if there are five group members who are entitled to receive a share of a group's L$ deposits, but only L$4 is received, it will be held until one more L$ is received (so each eligible member receives L$1).
