Open Source Meeting/2008-09-18

• [14:01] Soft Linden: Heya!
• [14:02] Rob Linden: hi all!
• [14:02] Aimee Trescothick: hi Rob :)
• [14:02] McCabe Maxsted: ahoy!
• [14:03] Carjay McGinnis: greetings
• [14:03] Rob Linden: agenda looks pretty sparse: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Open_Source_Meeting/Agenda
• [14:04] Soft Linden: Are we stepping on some European holiday right now or ?
• [14:04] Carjay McGinnis: hm, indeed
• [14:04] Aimee Trescothick: holiday? what are those?
• [14:04] Carjay McGinnis: ah, not here, actually quite busy right now
• [14:05] Rob Linden: Soft and I can give quick updates on what we're working on, and maybe eveyrone else can as well (and Q should be coming soon)
• [14:05] Rob Linden: I'll start
• [14:05] McCabe Maxsted: http://www.talklikeapirate.com/ is tomorrow
• [14:05] Rob Linden:  :)
• [14:06] Rob Linden: we've been continuing the patch triage meetings, and I think the list is shrinking
• [14:06] Rob Linden: not to mention that we're at least discusing the issues that are there at least once every couple of months
• [14:07] McCabe Maxsted: I noticed some old patches have been imported; I was pleasantly surprised
• [14:07] Carjay McGinnis: aha, yes, received an update on VWR-8194
• [14:07] Soft Linden: Squirrel, Nyx :)
• [14:07] Squirrel Wood: Hollas!
• [14:07] McCabe Maxsted: have you looked at the patch for creating default permissions yet?
• [14:07] Carjay McGinnis: greetings you two
• [14:07] Nyx Linden: greetings! sorry for being a bit late
• [14:07] Rob Linden: we had a great conversation with Danica Linden about some of the localizations that are coming in (latest being Polish).
• [14:07] McCabe Maxsted: ahoy there :)
• [14:08] Carjay McGinnis: yeah, the viewer needed some polish indeed
• [14:09] Rob Linden: she has office hours every Tuesday at 10am to talk about KB localizations, which talk of viewer localizations is generally welcome as well
• [14:09] Rob Linden: McCabe: which patch are you talking about?
• [14:09] McCabe Maxsted: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8049
• [14:10] Squirrel Wood: ah.. the ones for when you create or upload something..?
• [14:10] Soft Linden: McCabe, we just looked at that today, actually...
• [14:10] Soft Linden: We're pushing that to Rx for first-blush analysis to see what else they think it should do
• [14:11] Soft Linden: Or sorry - Rx already had it!
• [14:11] McCabe Maxsted: but you're open to a serverside change to allow it?
• [14:11] Rob Linden: good topic for Benjamin's office hour
• [14:11] Soft Linden: We said Rx should have it - then saw they did. :>
• [14:11] Carjay McGinnis: first-blush?
• [14:11] Rob Linden: looks cool to us, but not our call
• [14:11] Rob Linden: not at all sure about the server side changes
• [14:11] Carjay McGinnis: sounds good, it will make life much easier
• [14:12] Carjay McGinnis: at least for open source folks
• [14:12] Soft Linden: Yes, I'd love to have this myself. I think Tofu felt the same way
• [14:12] McCabe Maxsted: the patch needs a change in the server to work... eager to do my own implementation :D
• [14:12] Rob Linden: note to everyone: we're hiring :)
• [14:13] Rob Linden: the folks that work on server stuff have insanely full plates
• [14:13] McCabe Maxsted: remotely? or just in specific towns?
• [14:13] Rob Linden: prefer the cities we have offices in, but it can't hurt to lob your resume in even if you aren't in any of them
• [14:14] Squirrel Wood: any preferred degrees, requirements, .. ?
• [14:14] Soft Linden: For what it's worth, a few devs do work completely outside the offices. It's doable. Some states will be easier than others.
• [14:14] Rob Linden: Soft, for example, works from a remote location under a volcano somewhere in the south pacific
• [14:14] Soft Linden: After the bombs, I'm it.
• [14:15] Aimee Trescothick: jeez? really, what a coincidence ... :P
• [14:15] Carjay McGinnis: hehe
• [14:15] Simon Kline: heh
• [14:15] Q Linden: just to let everyone know, there's actually a limited list of places we can hire
• [14:15] Aimee Trescothick: waves from the next volcano
• [14:15] Soft Linden: A degree helps. It's not an absolute requirement, but you'd have to have some pretty good work experience to compensate.
• [14:15] Q Linden: it's bigger than jsut our offices, but it's only, um, 19 US states and a few countries
• [14:15] Carjay McGinnis: I live in the Germanic swamps most of the time
• [14:16] Simon Kline: is australia in that list? :)
• [14:16] Soft Linden: Some states' legal requirements are pretty insane for remote workers. The short of it though - if this seems like your dream job - you've nothing to lose. :>
• [14:17] Rob Linden: Simon: I don't recall. Singapore is definitely on the list
• [14:17] Q Linden: AFAIK, Australia is a weird one
• [14:17] Squirrel Wood: Given the current $/€ conversion rate I doubt LL would be too happy with me :p
• [14:17] Q Linden: There are some issues with us hiring new people there, IIRC
• [14:17] Soft Linden: Go on with updates?
• [14:18] Rob Linden: yup
• [14:18] Carjay McGinnis: yeah, Squirrel :)
• [14:18] Rob Linden: (someone else should go...I don't recall anything else I can talk about)
• [14:18] Carjay McGinnis: no updates on Webkit?
• [14:18] Soft Linden: For me, I blasted through all the old JIRA issues with a source code component since we last looked at the list. So that's a few dozen items smaller. There were a lot of quickie 1 and 2 liners, or things we'd already done but not updated the JIRA for
• [14:19] Squirrel Wood: Glod Sarts for Soft ^^
• [14:19] McCabe Maxsted: has a few questions he'd like to ask, if there isn't anything else on the list to talk about
• [14:19] Soft Linden: I'm also working with CG Linden to get every single branch doing a nightly open source export and test build on all three machines so we shouldn't see trunk/ unbuildable again
• [14:19] Rob Linden: Carjay: not quite yet, sorry
• [14:19] Carjay McGinnis: ok, np
• [14:19] Aimee Trescothick: cool
• [14:20] Carjay McGinnis: sound great indeed
• [14:20] Soft Linden: Was going to talk about what we planned today for sprints too but actually Q's here and SE is his baby :) I can pass the baton on that!
• [14:20] Soft Linden: Other than that, it's just snatching old patches we're unearthing with these triages for me.
• [14:21] Q Linden: Heh. So basically, we've mentioned before that we're creating meta-JIRAs of related issues, and we're going to start doing internal sprints on those. The frequency and duration of such sprints is still TBD.
• [14:22] Q Linden: We'll start with internal-only sprints until we get out feet under us, then we'll start looking at ways of doing joint internal/external sprints.
• [14:22] Q Linden: out -> our
• [14:22] McCabe Maxsted: <3s the metas. Does it make me sound old if I say things like "I remember the pjira before meta issues"?
• [14:22] Soft Linden: Ha!
• [14:23] Rob Linden: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9010
• [14:23] Q Linden: like texas was: hot, dry, and flat
• [14:23] Aimee Trescothick: makes you sound older if you remember life before pjira :D
• [14:24] Soft Linden: The big huge thing is - Q's made us a home where we can try to do these officially now. That's huge
• [14:24] Q Linden: has strong nesting-fu.
• [14:24] McCabe Maxsted: grins
• [14:24] Aimee Trescothick: LOL
• [14:24] Rob Linden: Soft is sorta already on an unofficial i18n sprint, I think
• [14:24] McCabe Maxsted: ooooooh
• [14:24] Squirrel Wood: thank you for helping us help you help us all ? ^^
• [14:25] Soft Linden: Of the most miniature variety. Just squeezing a bunch of straggler hard coded strings out.
• [14:25] Soft Linden: We'll officially be done when you see (hippopotames) in your friend list from time to time.
• [14:26] Rob Linden: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6858
• [14:26] Rob Linden: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6787
• [14:26] Rob Linden: (that's the i18n list of pjira issues so far)
• [14:26] Soft Linden: Right. Things like that and a few internals. Wouldn't qualify this as a sprint. :>
• [14:27] Rob Linden: Soft, which branch are you putting those in?
• [14:27] Soft Linden: Those will just go in maint-viewer
• [14:27] McCabe Maxsted: hehe I thought you were talking about internationalizing the comma/decimal system
• [14:28] Soft Linden: Those are minor enough that we'll spend about as long talking about 'em today as doing em.
• [14:28] McCabe Maxsted: (and removing other such americanisms)
• [14:28] Soft Linden: Actually, our plan for those is to fix Europe instead.
• [14:28] Aimee Trescothick: metric/imperial conversion coming next :D
• [14:28] Rob Linden: lol
• [14:28] McCabe Maxsted: haha
• [14:28] Squirrel Wood: use whichever metrics the OS has set ?
• [14:29] Soft Linden: Use the rest of this time to run through source code issues, or anything else?
• [14:29] Rob Linden: my car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and thats the way i likes it
• [14:29] Soft Linden: Awesome
• [14:29] Carjay McGinnis: hehe
• [14:29] Aimee Trescothick: before I forget, what version of Xcode are you guys using these days?
• [14:29] McCabe Maxsted: was wondering if anyone here knew of any good opensource tools to QA the viewer with
• [14:29] Aimee Trescothick: 3.0, or are you on 3.1 now?
• [14:30] Soft Linden: I believe 3.1. If not, shortly we will be.
• [14:30] Soft Linden: That may even be pushed by Software Update. Is it?
• [14:30] Aimee Trescothick: good question, not sure
• [14:30] Squirrel Wood: try TaskInfo2000? gives you tons of info about running tasks. even debug info
• [14:30] Aimee Trescothick: just having a minor build issue I think might be a 3.1 thing
• [14:31] Aimee Trescothick: plopped it on sl-dev but haven't got round to jiraing yet
• [14:31] Aimee Trescothick: https://lists.secondlife.com/pipermail/sldev/2008-September/011839.html
• [14:31] Soft Linden: Apparently the Mac project files got merged back into trunk accidentally. So those and cmake builds step on each other. Those are being removed - may eliminate some confusion for Mac folk.
• [14:32] Soft Linden: Hmm
• [14:32] Aimee Trescothick: oh right, I'm working on viewer_1.21
• [14:32] Soft Linden: Oh, that's with CMake 2.6
• [14:32] Soft Linden: Most of us are still on 2.4 - that may be why we don't see it
• [14:32] Aimee Trescothick: yeah, breaks similarly on 2.4.8 though
• [14:33] Aimee Trescothick: have to use the 2.6 RC and do that patch to make it work
• [14:33] Soft Linden: I'll take a look at that after this meeting. I'm due to boot back into OS X for something else anyway
• [14:33] Aimee Trescothick: ok :)
• [14:34] Rob Linden: so, any more updates, or should we look at the source code issue list?
• [14:34] Rob Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=11240
• [14:35] Rob Linden: I just changed the sort order on that query a couple of minutes ago to sort by "Last Triaged"
• [14:36] Soft Linden: This one isn't a source code issue.
• [14:36] Rob Linden: a lot of these aren't really "source code" issues per se:
• [14:36] Rob Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3878
• [14:36] Soft Linden: Internally, it's slated for internal triage again.
• [14:36] Rob Linden: changed that to "performance"
• [14:37] Rob Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3480
• [14:37] Rob Linden: "Upgrade SL c-ares to 1.5"
• [14:38] Soft Linden: Internally, I'm going to ping Tofu to see if he did that with a separate libcurl change
• [14:38] Rob Linden: cool
• [14:39] Soft Linden: Next one isn't source code
• [14:39] Soft Linden: Removed the source code component, shouldn't touch the date.
• [14:39] Rob Linden: removing "source code" component
• [14:40] Rob Linden: oh....hopefully nonconflicting change
• [14:40] Soft Linden: Oh - I thought you bulk-updated the solaris triage dates?
• [14:40] Rob Linden: thought he did
• [14:40] Aimee Trescothick: watches as the JIRA implodes
• [14:40] Rob Linden: oh, just missed a few
• [14:40] Carjay McGinnis: hehe
• [14:40] Rob Linden: I got it
• [14:41] Soft Linden: Past that, we're really up to issues already triaged this month
• [14:42] Soft Linden: No use in revisiting things already seen just a couple weeks ago.
• [14:43] Rob Linden: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7331 ....not really source issue
• [14:43] Soft Linden: Right
• [14:44] Rob Linden: well, anything else anyone want to bring up, or do we call it a day?
• [14:45] Soft Linden: Nada here
• [14:45] Squirrel Wood: Tacos!
• [14:45] Rob Linden: going once....
• [14:45] Soft Linden: iawtc
• [14:45] Rob Linden: going twice.....
• [14:45] Simon Kline: grins and looks around for bidders
• [14:46] Rob Linden: ok, thanks everyone!
• [14:46] Squirrel Wood: open source tacos!
• [14:46] Simon Kline: take care guys :)
• [14:46] Q Linden: only things certain are death and tacos
• [14:46] Squirrel Wood: Have a great afternoon/evening/day/weekend/holiday/vacation/anything!
• [14:46] Q Linden: bye
• [14:46] Simon Kline: and don't forget talk like a pirate day on Friday ^^
• [14:46] Nyx Linden: take care all
• [14:47] Squirrel Wood: Arrr!
• [14:47] Aimee Trescothick: tc :)
• [14:47] Squirrel Wood: You shall walk the plank! Arr!
• [14:47] Carjay McGinnis: thanks, see you all
• [14:47] Simon Kline: (but not code like a pirate day)
• [14:47] Squirrel Wood: I want to see "Woooooooosh" again when teleporting!
• [14:47] Carjay McGinnis: hehe
• [14:47] Rob Linden: hasta potato!
• [14:47] Carjay McGinnis: why don't you?
