Summary

A short summary of the topics and decisions of this meeting (old agenda):

  • Request to participate in the LSL Portal Translation Project by providing translations for Mentor Linguists/LSL Cat L10n
  • Announced Rika Lindens Office Hours which are now related to Japanese localization projects
  • Pages in need of translation:
    • Viewer related: Security issues, Issue tracker (updated)
These pages are linked via the Help menu of the viewer, so should be localized to all languages which got a localized viewer
    • Volunteer related: Tao of Volunteers (updated)
  • Raised attention to MISC-2018 i18n/l10n of events
  • Group related:
    • Restructuring of group roles. The Mentor will be cut off the current role titles. Other group titles will be considered since the current system has unsupported languages due to the limitation of the amount of roles within a group
    • Follow up on Subscribe-O-Matic -> A Yahoo Group will be considered and beta tested by the attendees.

  • [13:35 SLT] eva Nowicka: brrrrrrrr
  • [13:35 SLT] Zai Lynch: hehe
  • [13:35 SLT] eva Nowicka: i clash without help
  • [13:35 SLT] eva Nowicka: :D
  • [13:35 SLT] eva Nowicka: ouch
  • [13:36 SLT] Zai Lynch: i think we'll cover just the topics that aren't redundant for us. so i hoped to have some more people who aren't so involved in localization projects already ^^ like polish and such
  • [13:37 SLT] Zai Lynch: lum, there's even a japanese localization project upcoming ;-) and rika linden hosting office hours. i just can't read when they are...
  • [13:37 SLT] Zai Lynch: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Rika_Linden
  • [13:37 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Ooh
  • [13:37 SLT] Zai Lynch: i can only read the time... not the day ^^
  • [13:38 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I can't even connect to the webpage
  • [13:38 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh.. time out?
  • [13:38 SLT] Gally Young: Tuesday 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM SLT (Wednesday local time 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM) (tks google)
  • [13:38 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Yes - but please go on
  • [13:39 SLT] Zai Lynch: oki =) so next topic is: LSL Category localization
  • [13:39 SLT] Zai Lynch: i made a list of terms that are in need for translation (like the list done for the help portal templates)
  • [13:39 SLT] Zai Lynch: lemme search the link...
  • [13:39 SLT] Zai Lynch: over here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mentor_Linguists/LSL_Cat_L10n
  • [13:40 SLT] Zai Lynch: it's about 100 terms that would need localization for all languages the LSL portal is published in
  • [13:40 SLT] Zai Lynch: so these terms will be used in templates to automatically translate the categories the portal uses...
  • [13:41 SLT] Zai Lynch: eva, do you know spanish scripters who are also linguists?
  • [13:41 SLT] eva Nowicka: i post the last week a message about it in the offical forums
  • [13:42 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh in the SL® forums? or the spanish forums from irene and you?
  • [13:42 SLT] eva Nowicka: and yes, i know some people that they can do it
  • [13:42 SLT] eva Nowicka: official forums ;)
  • [13:42 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh kewl :-) can you pass the link along to them?
  • [13:42 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah i see =)
  • [13:43 SLT] eva Nowicka: someone is working with LSL tutorials, and i said him to try to translate the wiki
  • [13:43 SLT] eva Nowicka: and i know a resident that he was translating some pages
  • [13:43 SLT] eva Nowicka: i'll try to talk with him about it
  • [13:44 SLT] Zai Lynch: thank you :-) that would be great.
  • [13:45 SLT] Zai Lynch: i think the beginning is quite hard when you start to translate LSL articles, 'cause of all the templates involved. but once the templates are set, it's straight forward. and the terms for the categories shouldn't need to much time
  • [13:45 SLT] Zai Lynch: ok, so far to the LSL Portal... we got three more articles which are kinda urgent with translations. two of them are linked to each viewer
  • [13:46 SLT] Zai Lynch: the issue tracker article and the "security issues" article. they are accessable via the "help" menu in the viewer. so it would be good to have them localized in each language the viewer itself is available in
  • [13:46 SLT] Zai Lynch: it's https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Security_issues and https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Issue_tracker while the later one got a recent update
  • [13:47 SLT] eva Nowicka: ok
  • [13:47 SLT] Zai Lynch: and for volunteers, there's the tao of volunteers that got an update recently and might need a new translation in parts. lisa added it to the volunteer scribe translation project
  • [13:48 SLT] Zai Lynch: one more topic is something marv asked me to raise attention to. it's localization of events. he posted a jira at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-2018
  • [13:48 SLT] Gally Young: good idea, and localized viewer shoul link to these pages (issue tracker&securty issue & LSL help) :)
  • [13:49 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah yuss LSL Help. i think that's the LSL Portal itself, or?
  • [13:49 SLT] Zai Lynch: *test*
  • [13:50 SLT] eva Nowicka: it's a good idea
  • [13:50 SLT] Zai Lynch: the LSL Editor can also link to the descriptions for each function in the LSL portal. do you think these should link to localized pages right away? like llSay/fr instead of llSay?
  • [13:50 SLT] Gally Young: yes )
  • [13:51 SLT] Gally Young: if the page exists
  • [13:51 SLT] eva Nowicka: well, i use an external editor.., but yes, it's a good idea too
  • [13:51 SLT] Zai Lynch: might be good to poke noelle or danica on this. german one isn't so far but french or japanese could already do that
  • [13:51 SLT] Gally Young: if the page exist => translated page otherwise english page
  • [13:52 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm... i'm not sure if the client is able to distinguish that
  • [13:52 SLT] eva Nowicka: mmm or we can create the page and redirect to the english
  • [13:52 SLT] Gally Young: if the page is created it's harder for the portal localization
  • [13:53 SLT] eva Nowicka: waiting for the translation
  • [13:53 SLT] Gally Young: you don't kno which page to localized
  • [13:53 SLT] Gally Young: *know
  • [13:54 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm... maybe a developer got an idea on how to manage that... should we just file a jira and wait for response?
  • [13:55 SLT] Zai Lynch: i might count that as a: maybe
  • [13:55 SLT] Zai Lynch: ^^
  • [13:55 SLT] eva Nowicka: or talk with some Linden about it
  • [13:55 SLT] Gally Young: maybe we could also ask to Noelle&Simone )
  • [13:56 SLT] Zai Lynch: yuss, at the office hours. though i'm not sure if they can tell us if it's realizable... but they might both have better connections to people to poke on it...
  • [13:56 SLT] Gally Young: they can'ttell us, but they can ask )
  • [13:56 SLT] Zai Lynch nods
  • [13:57 SLT] Zai Lynch: would you ask noelle? and i ask simone?
  • [13:57 SLT] Gally Young: okey ^^
  • [13:57 SLT] Zai Lynch: kewl =)
  • [13:58 SLT] Zai Lynch: there is another thing were marv asked me raise attention to. he had an idea on how to translate events. and made a jira for this. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-2018 it's split in 3 subtasks with some more explanations. maybe you can have a look at it later and maybe comment and/or vote
  • [13:58 SLT] Gally Young: don't forget the KB for german )
  • [13:59 SLT] Zai Lynch: hehe. that is paused at the moment ^_^ well... danica said she'd come up with some more land KB articles. but besides that, we're currently focused on the viewer
  • [14:00 SLT] Zai Lynch: i had one topic noted to the list that was more about group management...
  • [14:01 SLT] Zai Lynch: we got lots of roles in the group for different languages. like german speaking linguist, japanese speaking linguist, spanish speaking linguist, french speaking etc etc. but since the roles are limited, we can't have all people added to the appropriate role
  • [14:01 SLT] Zai Lynch: so i thought of removing them completly and replacing them by something else... i've just not been able to figure out what to take instead...
  • [14:02 SLT] Zai Lynch: would it make sense to have people in the group sorted by anything else but language?
  • [14:02 SLT] eva Nowicka: it's a good idea to remove them.... i've seen some people using them in the OI/HI.. and that's agains the Lum's hud
  • [14:03 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah... good argument...
  • [14:03 SLT] Lum Pfohl: well
  • [14:03 SLT] Zai Lynch: we'd need to get rid of the "mentor" part anyway
  • [14:03 SLT] Lum Pfohl: in a little while, only gereters wil be on HI
  • [14:03 SLT] Zai Lynch: since it's not a mentor group anymore
  • [14:03 SLT] Lum Pfohl: *greeters
  • [14:03 SLT] eva Nowicka: that's true :)
  • [14:04 SLT] Gally Young: at least remove the mentor title )
  • [14:04 SLT] Gally Young: several members aren't mentor )
  • [14:04 SLT] Zai Lynch nods... so i'll let the languages in place for now and just remove the "mentor" in the end?
  • [14:05 SLT] Gally Young: maybe, just in order to easily know who speak which language
  • [14:06 SLT] eva Nowicka: mmm if we must remove the "mentor" word... we should delete the group too, don't we?
  • [14:06 SLT] Zai Lynch: yeah. i would be afraid to loose the information. while, on the other hand, it's kinda unfair for the languages which aren't supported via own roles atm
  • [14:06 SLT] Lum Pfohl: y
  • [14:07 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh we don't have to remove the word. there weren't complaints by vteam so far and lexie (and many others) are in the owner role. so could remove that if they were uncomfortable with it
  • [14:07 SLT] Lum Pfohl: /
  • [14:07 SLT] Zai Lynch: but i would want to do it to not cause to much confusion
  • [14:07 SLT] Zai Lynch: about the groups name: that will stay the way for historical reasons. to show the "roots" where the group is coming from
  • [14:08 SLT] eva Nowicka: ok
  • [14:09 SLT] Zai Lynch: i guess i'll just strip off the "mentor" in the role name by now... and we can try to come up with ideas till the next meeting. since i don't know a good replacement for the current sorting
  • [14:10 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Iagree
  • [14:10 SLT] eva Nowicka: ok
  • [14:10 SLT] Gally Young: okey )
  • [14:11 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm. i thik there is only the "subscribe o matic" left on the agenda but Tue isn't there... so might postpone that as well.
  • [14:12 SLT] Zai Lynch: it was thought to be an additional communication tool since inworld notices fail sometimes. and as far as i understood him, he got a spare one which he doesn't need
  • [14:12 SLT] Gally Young: we can use the mailing list ?
  • [14:12 SLT] eva Nowicka: well.. the notice was in the vteam's blog and in the mail list
  • [14:12 SLT] Zai Lynch: lexie said she'd ask danica about it. so in general she wasn't happy about it beeing used for a group
  • [14:13 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah yuss. the one about the meeting. it's more about urgent articles in need of translation or something like that.
  • [14:14 SLT] Zai Lynch: and since not all groupmembers are mentors too, i don't expect them to look at have access to the volunteer mailing list or look at the vteam blog. however, the CT mailing list would have been nice to use. but i think lexie doesn't like it. at least i had that impression
  • [14:15 SLT] eva Nowicka: a private forum or mail list then?
  • [14:15 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I can start a Yahoo forum
  • [14:15 SLT] eva Nowicka: or a yahoo or google group?
  • [14:15 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm... i'm not the biggest fan of forums. though mailing list might be kewl?
  • [14:16 SLT] Lum Pfohl: The yahoo is a remailer
  • [14:16 SLT] Gally Young: hoo it was the mentor mailing list ? there is a mailing list for localization too )
  • [14:16 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I have two Yahoo's and all the messages come to my email
  • [14:16 SLT] Gally Young: the Ctproject mailing list
  • [14:17 SLT] Zai Lynch: yuss, the CT mailing list. think i might send reminders there too... don't even know if i'm a member of that list by now o.O or are we added automatically when we join the CT project?
  • [14:17 SLT] Gally Young: no, I added myslef
  • [14:17 SLT] Zai Lynch: @yahoo: does it need a yahoo account to start such a mailing list?
  • [14:17 SLT] Gally Young: *myself
  • [14:17 SLT] Lum Pfohl: no
  • [14:17 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I have a hotmail account
  • [14:17 SLT] Lum Pfohl: and the emails come there
  • [14:17 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I also have a google account and another forum traffic goes there
  • [14:18 SLT] Lum Pfohl: so it could be anything.
  • [14:18 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm... that would be kewl i think... if we had something like that for the group
  • [14:19 SLT] Gally Young: and it will be easier to send information about pages to localized etc. )
  • [14:19 SLT] Zai Lynch: we could have a similar set of basic rules like in the CT mailing list. to write [LANGUAGE] topic in a header. and then have discussions about stuff
  • [14:20 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah yuss... is always a problem in the notices since it's not directly copyable...
  • [14:20 SLT] Zai Lynch: i'm often trying to cut URLs short with http://tinyurl.com
  • [14:21 SLT] eva Nowicka: a group is ok for me.. i'm subscripted to several groups
  • [14:21 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Notices are copyable once you view them from GROP INFO...
  • [14:21 SLT] Zai Lynch nods. but few do that
  • [14:21 SLT] Zai Lynch: kewl =) so will have a look at that yahoo stuff
  • [14:21 SLT] Zai Lynch: has it an archive for mails from the past?
  • [14:22 SLT] eva Nowicka: yes
  • [14:22 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Yes
  • [14:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: kewl =)
  • [14:22 SLT] Lum Pfohl: And files uploaded
  • [14:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: sounds perfect...
  • [14:22 SLT] Lum Pfohl: and meetings calendar and stuff
  • [14:22 SLT] Lum Pfohl: and it can be open or closed membership
  • [14:22 SLT] Zai Lynch: hm... what should it be? *looks around* do we expect spam bots in case it's open?
  • [14:23 SLT] Lum Pfohl: We can start one, Zai. and test it out for a week
  • [14:23 SLT] Lum Pfohl: we can make the message posting moderated
  • [14:23 SLT] Lum Pfohl: so taht spam does not get through
  • [14:23 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I usually moderate all new users - once they post a legitamate message, I allow them to post freely
  • [14:24 SLT] Lum Pfohl: that way i can filter out spam, spam accounts and kick the spammers from the group
  • [14:24 SLT] Zai Lynch: and can more people be moderators or just the list creator?
  • [14:24 SLT] Lum Pfohl: many people can be made moderator
  • [14:24 SLT] Lum Pfohl: many people can be made owner
  • [14:25 SLT] eva Nowicka: another interesting thing is that you can create a diferent id for this group
  • [14:25 SLT] Lum Pfohl: and ownership can be transferred from one person to another
  • [14:25 SLT] eva Nowicka: and use as alias our sl's name
  • [14:25 SLT] Zai Lynch: oh what does different id mean?
  • [14:25 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah. so the mail adress isn't shown but the SL® name?
  • [14:25 SLT] eva Nowicka: i use different id with the same email account in differents yahoo groups
  • [14:25 SLT] eva Nowicka: yes, that's
  • [14:26 SLT] Zai Lynch: kewl :-) so will create one and add you 3 and then we can test it for a week and then make it public once it works as expected
  • [14:26 SLT] eva Nowicka: we need to know with who we're talking
  • [14:26 SLT] Zai Lynch nods
  • [14:26 SLT] Lum Pfohl: You can have ID's separate from email addresses, I think is what eva is saying
  • [14:27 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah, i see....
  • [14:27 SLT] eva Nowicka: no, no, with the same email
  • [14:27 SLT] Lum Pfohl: yes,
  • [14:27 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I can be: SL@LumPFohl with my lumkichi@hotmail.com email
  • [14:27 SLT] eva Nowicka: aah, yes.. sorry, i've readed very fast :)
  • [14:28 SLT] Lum Pfohl: and I can continue to use my email address for other yahoo forums
  • [14:29 SLT] Zai Lynch: simone is also asking katt linden for a german speaking linguist subforum in the SL® forum. but i think a mailing list is way better. since it automatically sends the postings to the mailbox and you don't have to check manually... small forums are dying soon since no one looks at them and it takes ages for replies
  • [14:30 SLT] Zai Lynch: test
  • [14:30 SLT] Zai Lynch: well, i think we're through with the topics of this meeting :-) will send you all messages once the list is set up. do we have other topics to discuss?
  • [14:30 SLT] Zai Lynch: ah chat lag
  • [14:30 SLT] Zai Lynch: ^^
  • [14:30 SLT] Lum Pfohl: hee hee
  • [14:30 SLT] eva Nowicka: :)
  • [14:31 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Yay!
  • [14:32 SLT] Lum Pfohl: I guess we're done?
  • [14:32 SLT] eva Nowicka: it was nice and quickly, Zai :D
  • [14:32 SLT] Zai Lynch: looks like =)
  • [14:32 SLT] Zai Lynch: hehe. thx ^^ sorry again for forgetting about it (x-x)
  • [14:32 SLT] Zai Lynch: i thought it would start at 11PM german time. but was 10PM
  • [14:32 SLT] Gally Young: yes, it was very efficient zai )
  • [14:32 SLT] eva Nowicka: well.. it was a good thing
  • [14:32 SLT] Lum Pfohl: :D
  • [14:32 SLT] eva Nowicka: i've two events at the same time
  • [14:33 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Hopefully Zai's sleeping better
  • [14:33 SLT] eva Nowicka: then.... i was in the other :D
  • [14:33 SLT] Zai Lynch: oohh are these every month at that time? so should we postpone the meeting by one hour in the future?
  • [14:33 SLT] Zai Lynch: hehe
  • [14:33 SLT] eva Nowicka: it's a fine time for me
  • [14:34 SLT] Zai Lynch: ok, so will stay at 1PM. next one is at january 14th
  • [14:34 SLT] Lum Pfohl: Okies
  • [14:34 SLT] Gally Young: ok ^^
  • [14:34 SLT] Zai Lynch: eva crashed again ^^
  • [14:35 SLT] Zai Lynch: kewl :-) thx again for showing up! will post transcript and summary to the wiki and then let you 3 know when the mailing list is up
