Summary

A short summary about the decisions and topics of this meeting:

  1. The freebie store should have a display area (on an extra parcel) where new freebies can be displayed. This area becomes cleaned once a month and freebies from there are supposed to be placed in the main freebie store. The display area is supposed to be advertised monthly via the VTeam Blog.
  2. Freebies at the store should be categorized.
A list of these categories will be discussed at this Wiki page.
  3. The freebie store building (Fleebie Store quote from Lexie) should be open and without a roof.
Building work might be done by Jezzie.
  4. Suggestions on maintenance and possibe guidelines were made (see transcript [13:38] and following comments) and will be discussed at a VTeam meeting.

Transcript

  • [13:04] George Linden: So first off.. to get on the same page and everything; what started up the committee plans,
  • [13:04] George Linden: was it discussed what role the committee would play in the freebie store?
  • [13:04] Jezzie McCellan: This is our first meeting, so pretty much we are a blank slate
  • [13:05] George Linden: Okay cool X) thanks
  • [13:05] Lexie Linden: ok
  • [13:05] George Linden: One of the ideas that I think was passed along to you (stop me if you've heard it!)
  • [13:05] George Linden: Is the idea of a showcase area on its own parcel,
  • [13:05] Zai Lynch: yes, heard =)
  • [13:05] George Linden: Where its contents are returned once a month, while also the showcase area is advertised on vteamblog.com once a month-
  • [13:05] Doctor Gascoigne: yes
  • [13:06] George Linden: Okay cool, what do you think of that as a starting point?
  • [13:06] Jezzie McCellan: yes you mentioned that at your hours
  • [13:06] Rails Bailey: so once a month we have to start again
  • [13:06] George Linden: Or if you have an alternative, what come to mind
  • [13:06] Simon Kline: sounds good.. the monthly rotations will be good :D
  • [13:06] George Linden: No Rails *headshake*
  • [13:06] Zai Lynch: i think it's a neat idea in case people welcome it. and it would advertise the store to new mentors who didn't knew about it so far. / keep it alive
  • [13:07] George Linden: Just the showcase area gets wiped :) say.. May 1 - 'put your stuff out at showcase' May 7 - 'hey everyone, check out the showcase area'
  • [13:07] Jezzie McCellan: also we could have a place for submissions for the featured item
  • [13:07] Rails Bailey: ah
  • [13:07] Doctor Gascoigne: a week
  • [13:07] George Linden: May 20 - 'just a heads up, move your stuff to the category spaces outside of showcase, it's getting wiped on the 30th!'
  • [13:07] Lexie Linden: monthly
  • [13:07] Doctor Gascoigne: ok 3 weeks
  • [13:07] Jezzie McCellan: oh so anyone can drop off?
  • [13:08] George Linden: Nah 4 weeks XD stuff set out on first day of the month, stuff returned last day of the month-
  • [13:08] George Linden: But,
  • [13:08] Doctor Gascoigne: thats great
  • [13:08] Doctor Gascoigne: showcase idea great
  • [13:08] George Linden: The showcase would be one parcel,
  • [13:08] George Linden: And the freebie store with category spots will be on the outside, not getting wiped-
  • [13:08] George Linden: Let me drop you all a notecard X)
  • [13:08] George Linden: Might explain it better to see in one bite
  • [13:09] George Linden: gave you Free Bees AHH IT STINGS.
  • [13:09] Saxet Uralia: what about having an area that is basic freebies for new mentors that stays put like avatar-in-a-box
  • [13:09] Saxet Uralia: lol
  • [13:09] Simon Kline: indeed parcelling it like that would be a smart way to manage it
  • [13:09] Doctor Gascoigne: thats great G
  • [13:09] George Linden: Yeah Saxet.. I was thinking the same that, if we like the showcase area (wiped monthly) and then have a separate area for categories (wiped less frequently) we'd want to brainstorm categories :)
  • [13:10] George Linden: But if this is all too confusing I'm open to other ideas..!
  • [13:10] Rails Bailey: staples for OI's where u cant unpack
  • [13:10] Rails Bailey: had the same principle in the last one
  • [13:10] Doctor Gascoigne: I think the freebie idea is the heart of mentoring
  • [13:10] Doctor Gascoigne: regardless of what others think
  • [13:11] Doctor Gascoigne: it brings much joy to the joyless and confused
  • [13:11] Doctor Gascoigne: and the hairless and ruthed
  • [13:11] Doctor Gascoigne: breakfast cereals and fruit bats
  • [13:11] Jezzie McCellan: it always make people happy to receive things
  • [13:11] George Linden: ..lol
  • [13:11] Rails Bailey: alternatively geoge, vteam could consider coming up with a basic mentor starter kit, get every mentor on the same page as it were
  • [13:11] George Linden: *nodod*
  • [13:11] Saxet Uralia: agrees
  • [13:11] Doctor Gascoigne: collectively speaking I do not just drop stuff on people
  • [13:12] George Linden: ah.. it sounds like you want to talk more about the contents of the freebie store..?
  • [13:12] Jezzie McCellan: hi Usil
  • [13:12] Doctor Gascoigne: they ask for things and I suggest
  • [13:12] Zai Lynch: heyas
  • [13:12] Usil Bailey: Hi all
  • [13:12] Doctor Gascoigne: hey!
  • [13:12] Doctor Gascoigne: Usil
  • [13:12] Lexie Linden: Hi Usil
  • [13:12] Jezzie McCellan: i think we sould get to the basics, then decide on contents
  • [13:12] George Linden: I think the structure of it would be best to start with too-
  • [13:12] Doctor Gascoigne: I must leave shortly my physical therapy appt has been moved back
  • [13:12] George Linden: Truth be told it will be much more the Mentors' freebie contributions than Lindens
  • [13:12] George Linden: Okay Doc
  • [13:12] Doctor Gascoigne: so you haev me for 3 more mins
  • [13:13] Doctor Gascoigne: sorry :(
  • [13:13] Doctor Gascoigne: I am sure G will notecard us all
  • [13:13] Saxet Uralia: I like the idea of the area that gets wiped once a month, it fosters creativity and sharing
  • [13:13] Doctor Gascoigne: and I trust everyone here
  • [13:13] Doctor Gascoigne: all great mentors
  • [13:13] George Linden: As far as structure, should the showcase area be scrapped and instead we set up a building with categories that gets wiped more frequently,
  • [13:13] Doctor Gascoigne: and lindens
  • [13:13] Jezzie McCellan: i like a combo idea
  • [13:14] Lexie Linden: I think the showcase area will help promote
  • [13:14] Doctor Gascoigne: diversity in freebieahe
  • [13:14] Simon Kline: i like the showcase idea
  • [13:14] Doctor Gascoigne: freebieage
  • [13:14] Saxet Uralia: I like the combo idea as well
  • [13:14] Simon Kline: so the freebies.. are they ones made by us or just ones from the public domain out there...
  • [13:14] Jezzie McCellan: we have a showcase area and the things that are wiped from there actually feed into the freebie store
  • [13:15] George Linden: Okay X) on top of this, we'll have lots of room on the outside of the showcase parcel for parcels that don't get wiped often and are set to categories..
  • [13:15] Rails Bailey: the last one simon was all full perm items from biab's
  • [13:15] George Linden: Want to try brainstorming categories? (gadgetry, scripts, avatars.....)
  • [13:15] Saxet Uralia: houses
  • [13:15] George Linden: Simon, any freebies that go here will be volunteer contributed with full permissions,
  • [13:16] Jezzie McCellan: why not have things that can only be gotten from mentors
  • [13:16] George Linden: Houses/complex builds?
  • [13:16] Saxet Uralia: low prim non complex builds
  • [13:16] Rails Bailey: could be seen by the general population as feathering the nest
  • [13:17] George Linden: That's a very specific category XD will want to keep them kind of broad so that we don't have Mentors trying to find things in 15 different 'rooms'...
  • [13:17] Jezzie McCellan: they can go to 100s of places to get most of the freebies we have to offer now
  • [13:17] Jezzie McCellan: why not have things that they will want from us
  • [13:17] Zai Lynch: do everything needs to have mod rights too? as a rule?
  • [13:17] Jezzie McCellan: it is good
  • [13:17] Jezzie McCellan: i would think they need to have copy/trans
  • [13:17] Zai Lynch: nods
  • [13:17] George Linden: Zai I am not sure about mod rights,
  • [13:17] George Linden: Copy/transfer though, yeah..
  • [13:17] Lexie Linden: agreed
  • [13:18] Zai Lynch: ok, that was what i had in mind too. just was confused cause of the "full perms" quote from earlier
  • [13:18] George Linden: *nodnod* Sorry, I misspoke X)
  • [13:18] Rails Bailey: if its mentor made, then it would be foolish for full perms
  • [13:19] George Linden: Okay so.. would it be better if we came up with a list of broad category room types, and parcelled this area out/labeled them?
  • [13:19] Rails Bailey: cos the little darlings will sell or trade it
  • [13:19] George Linden: Or any other contributions on the topic of the categories?
  • [13:19] Jezzie McCellan: can i ask why we need to parcel the land for categories?
  • [13:19] Rails Bailey: staples for OI's where u cant really unpack
  • [13:19] Zai Lynch: np np ^^. so i think maybe parts with: Clothes (incl. dresses, shoes, etc), hair, scripts(?) <- shouldn't be in the store imho. wiki would be the right place for scripts. but gimmicks (like hug tools etc).
  • [13:20] George Linden: I don't really know what you mean Rails, can you explain..?
  • [13:20] George Linden: Jezzie, we don't need to parcel the land for categories, but would for the showcase area
  • [13:20] Rails Bailey: oneach oi there is one 16 sq spot where the knowing can unpack a box
  • [13:20] Rails Bailey: a whole three prims
  • [13:20] George Linden: But parcelling would make it easier for prim control/counting also ;/ was just an idea
  • [13:21] Saxet Uralia: does it really have to be a store building? how about an open air market?
  • [13:21] Jezzie McCellan: rails you can set the boxes to give a folder when sold
  • [13:21] Usil Bailey: likes that
  • [13:21] Rails Bailey: did that at the last one jezzie, but just for distribution on oi's
  • [13:21] George Linden: Not sure what you mean by staples though
  • [13:21] Lexie Linden: open air market seems like a good idea
  • [13:22] Usil Bailey: Open Air,,Flea market style
  • [13:22] George Linden: I know there are some issues with OIs X) but we want to get through the freebie store creation to get it up and ready for use! :)
  • [13:22] Jezzie McCellan: i would do it for them all, saves having to open boxes
  • [13:22] Rails Bailey: staples, = hair, basic clothes, shoes, skins, shapes
  • [13:22] Usil Bailey: AO's
  • [13:22] George Linden: so a new resident basics section..
  • [13:22] Usil Bailey: Remember they want to fit in above all else
  • [13:22] George Linden: AOs sound good
  • [13:23] Saxet Uralia: Fun stuff like glasses, dance particles...ext
  • [13:23] Saxet Uralia: ect
  • [13:23] Jezzie McCellan: ok so you can have apparel, skins & shapes, gadgets, scripts, textures, houses, household items,
  • [13:23] Usil Bailey: Nothing Laggy many are comming to us on less than powerful pc's
  • [13:24] George Linden: Okay cool, these are great ideas :)
  • [13:24] Lexie Linden: Zai - about the scripts..people could set up links to wiki if you think thats better
  • [13:25] Zai Lynch: yeah that would be an idea. there is a script library in the wiki where people can contribute open source scripts. so we coult link the main page of this library at the store
  • [13:25] Lexie Linden: good idea
  • [13:25] Zai Lynch: ty =)
  • [13:25] Jezzie McCellan: i have been to places where scripts were distributed on a notecard
  • [13:25] Lexie Linden:  : ))
  • [13:25] George Linden: Was there any talk about who was going to build the freebie store? Or suggestions on direction with how that's set up?
  • [13:25] Lexie Linden: true Jezzie
  • [13:25] Rails Bailey: then for mentors, mentor tools for want of a better word, notecards, LM's to info hubs, specialised info notecards like dmca, etc
  • [13:26] Jezzie McCellan: great idea Rails
  • [13:26] Usil Bailey: A standard Help folder ,,,parts of mine are repetitive
  • [13:26] Saxet Uralia: Mentor Fleebie Market (Did we say Fleebie or Freebie?)...lol
  • [13:26] Zai Lynch: problems i see with notecards is that they are hard to keep up to date. in case we offer notecards about dmca and the content changes, we won't be able to notify anyone that they got an obsolete notecard
  • [13:26] Rails Bailey: I submit tickets for LL info, and generally pass it through mm, but that is only 800 mentors
  • [13:27] Lexie Linden: lol Fleebie
  • [13:27] Jezzie McCellan: it would be nice to have some sort of list of new great things mentors are offering
  • [13:27] Jezzie McCellan: like Zai, I stumbled upon your wiki pages
  • [13:27] George Linden: Ooo, those are good, Rails. We're going to be coming out (very very soon) with a single page wiki that has infohub links, dmca/policy links, torley tuts, whole slew of stuff.. but that doesn't change this
  • [13:27] Zai Lynch: oh... i don't think i got such a list tho...
  • [13:27] Usil Bailey: cool
  • [13:27] George Linden: For official stuff, best we link direct to the source, rather than creating notecard contents,
  • [13:27] Rails Bailey: o great, another wiki link for the mm page
  • [13:28] Usil Bailey: lol
  • [13:28] George Linden: But for how to notecards and the like, those have a place in a 'notecards' section *nodnod* surely
  • [13:28] Usil Bailey: agrees
  • [13:29] Rails Bailey: one thing mentors lack, is time, when a person asks a question they are not going to stand there and wait for a mentor to dig out the info, notecards is a better way
  • [13:29] Usil Bailey: That is so true
  • [13:29] Zai Lynch: oohh now i got it! list of things mentors offer, like a wiki page for example. ok, took some time to click ^_^ we got such a list. kinda. sec
  • [13:29] Rails Bailey: let them read at their leisure
  • [13:29] George Linden: hoping this wiki page we're working on will alleviate that a bit, Rails
  • [13:29] Lexie Linden: It should
  • [13:29] Lexie Linden:  : ))
  • [13:29] Zai Lynch: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:Userpages_With_Helpful_Resources_For_Volunteers
  • [13:29] George Linden: But, just a word of caution, we'll want to be careful putting official info in notecards in world *nodnod*
  • [13:29] Saxet Uralia: sounds great
  • [13:29] Rails Bailey: but u still have to follow the links george, just like the MM one
  • [13:30] Jezzie McCellan: i wish mentors had a newletter or something
  • [13:30] George Linden: Okay! I'm sure we'll find some compromise, this is pretty specific/later on stuff :) Amber may want to weigh in
  • [13:30] Usil Bailey: Most of my Notes are from other mentors and a few i tested myself as I made them
  • [13:31] Jezzie McCellan: ok, what about the actual building
  • [13:31] Rails Bailey: hides
  • [13:31] George Linden: Any suggestions? XD
  • [13:31] Zai Lynch: or a category on the blog. i'm still sad that the rss feed of the blog can't be displayed in the wiki btw.. and: thx to everyone who voted for it. much appreciated
  • [13:31] George Linden: Haha
  • [13:31] Jezzie McCellan: i am willing to offer my skills
  • [13:32] Lexie Linden: Did you decide on a building or an open layout?
  • [13:32] George Linden: Anyone else? X) Hate to drop this canonball on Jezzie haha
  • [13:32] George Linden: Yeah.. good thought
  • [13:32] Saxet Uralia: be glad to help
  • [13:32] Jezzie McCellan: shrugs, i am a fast builder
  • [13:32] Rails Bailey: ok jezzie will team with ya
  • [13:32] Zai Lynch: i don't have any mentionable building skills, so i'm out at this one ^_^ but i'd vote for a building altho the building can/should be open. maybe a pavillion or something
  • [13:32] Simon Kline: is more of a scripter than a builder haha
  • [13:32] George Linden: Something more open would be better, just as long as you can kind of 'see' the different areas
  • [13:33] Rails Bailey: colour code them
  • [13:33] Lexie Linden: right
  • [13:33] Usil Bailey: different levels
  • [13:33] Rails Bailey: legend out the front
  • [13:33] Rails Bailey: poof
  • [13:33] Usil Bailey: thats the ticket Rails
  • [13:33] Jezzie McCellan: just need a theme
  • [13:33] Simon Kline: sounds good Rails
  • [13:33] Jezzie McCellan: i like a theme
  • [13:33] George Linden: Good ideas X)
  • [13:33] Rails Bailey: faintsw
  • [13:33] Usil Bailey: Swap meet ??
  • [13:34] Rails Bailey: got 40 themes in my inv
  • [13:34] George Linden: Would we agree that low prim would be best, so that the parcel has less of a chance to fill up way down the road?
  • [13:34] Usil Bailey: YES
  • [13:34] Simon Kline: indeed
  • [13:34] Jezzie McCellan: as low as possible
  • [13:34] George Linden: easier to see as well
  • [13:34] George Linden: Cool *nodnod* great
  • [13:34] Jezzie McCellan: eliminate the roof and you cut most of the prims
  • [13:34] Usil Bailey: Not Fancy,,,go functional
  • [13:34] Jezzie McCellan: swap meet works for that
  • [13:34] Lexie Linden: right
  • [13:34] Simon Kline: avatars don't like being inside anyhow so no roof is good heh
  • [13:34] Jezzie McCellan: and next to a carnival that is good
  • [13:34] George Linden: Gah, let's do without a roof, I like being able to see in from above and catch lots of things at once X)
  • [13:34] Rails Bailey: and no mega's please
  • [13:34] Lexie Linden: Low Prim Fleebie Market
  • [13:34] George Linden: I know when fishing for freebies that's how most like it X)
  • [13:35] Lexie Linden:  : ))
  • [13:35] Rails Bailey: not that I dont like them they aare a pain
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: i don't build with them
  • [13:35] Usil Bailey: Thats it Lexie
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: i like it Lexie
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: FLeebie Market
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: hehe
  • [13:35] Rails Bailey: brilliant jezzie
  • [13:35] Usil Bailey: cool
  • [13:35] Lexie Linden: someone here said that
  • [13:35] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [13:35] Usil Bailey: Great name
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: that was Lexie
  • [13:35] Simon Kline: hahha great
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: so just stalls
  • [13:35] Jezzie McCellan: perfect
  • [13:36] Usil Bailey: Small side walls Jezz
  • [13:36] George Linden: Fleebie market haha
  • [13:36] George Linden: Fun stuff
  • [13:36] Usil Bailey: say one meter or so tall
  • [13:36] Zai Lynch: i gotta look in my dictionary. ^_^
  • [13:36] Lexie Linden: lol
  • [13:36] Usil Bailey: I like to stand in the middle and use my 3dx to shop malls
  • [13:37] George Linden: Yeah that's how I like to shop too Usil X)
  • [13:37] Usil Bailey: Hope everyone here has one now
  • [13:37] Simon Kline: let ur mouse do the walking
  • [13:37] George Linden: Okay so.. I think for a first meetup we've gone over a lot of things-
  • [13:37] Jezzie McCellan: what is a 3dx
  • [13:37] Zai Lynch: eeep. got two more topics tho
  • [13:37] Rails Bailey: actually a friend of ours, (simon) runs a flea market and its all road texture
  • [13:37] Usil Bailey: lol oh my my Jezz
  • [13:37] Jezzie McCellan: i shop by mouse
  • [13:37] Simon Kline: he's got a cool name rails ^^
  • [13:37] Jezzie McCellan: but i have not heard that term
  • [13:37] George Linden: Let's talk about 'next step's.. what do builders need from us, what could we provide (in terms of layout, categories, parcelling for showcase, etc.)..?
  • [13:38] Rails Bailey: good2go
  • [13:38] Usil Bailey: No words can describe it Jezz other than fantastic,,
  • [13:38] George Linden: Sure, Zai, go for it!
  • [13:38] Simon Kline: what's the other topics zia?
  • [13:38] Zai Lynch: ah ok: 1st i was thinking on how to manage a freebie store there. since many things are boxed and the parcel is most probable free for all to build, it might become cluttered very fast (like slvec, but maybe worse). so while neovo is having this project with the red boxes at slvec, we might keep the freebie store clean, when commitee members got return rights. i was thinking on how to manage it without the need of a new group and noticed that all commitee members are currently members of the "apprentice mentors" group too. so land could be set to this group, having a new role for the freebie store. this is just an idea tho. we could also adopt a similar (or the same system), which is tested at slvec.
  • [13:38] Saxet Uralia: think we need the categories set so we know how many different market areas needed...urban planning and all
  • [13:39] George Linden: Zai, I'm partly hoping that if we have a showcase area that wipes monthly, and then the outskirts area/category spots wipe every 4? 6? months, there would be less need for manageability,
  • [13:40] George Linden: As far as giving land rights to the Apprentice Mentor group like we did with the R&R area, would like to talk that over with all of VTeam, as, despite best intentions, that didn't work out too well on R&R,
  • [13:40] Zai Lynch: thing isn't that i believe ppl would clutter it on purpose. but in case they unpack boxes, they rez em on the floor. and it will be no return area. many ppl forget that since it's not common in SL®
  • [13:40] George Linden: And with Amber leading, would like to give her the final say there :) but will make sure to pass this along
  • [13:41] Usil Bailey: I hear ya George
  • [13:41] Rails Bailey: becasue decsions where made G then ignored
  • [13:41] Jezzie McCellan: i think it would need to be a much smaller group
  • [13:41] Zai Lynch: yes of course. just wanted to mention that there is a topic to discuss.
  • [13:41] George Linden: *nodnod* Thank you! Duly noted--you had another topic too?
  • [13:41] Lexie Linden: ok we will pass that on to Amber
  • [13:42] Rails Bailey: on the same hand george, ur going to get ticked if u get called to return obkects
  • [13:42] Zai Lynch: yes. as guideline for the freebie: any contribution should either have a picture of the item inside OR a detailed description. nothing is worse then a plywood box with hovering text: "500 dresses" or something.
  • [13:42] George Linden: X) Hopefully that won't be the case
  • [13:42] Usil Bailey: Hmmm Give coaches return rights???
  • [13:42] Jezzie McCellan: i agree
  • [13:43] Simon Kline: so true zai heh
  • [13:43] Lexie Linden: agreed Zai
  • [13:43] Zai Lynch: kewlz =)
  • [13:43] Simon Kline: as darn attractive as those plywood boxes are ^^
  • [13:43] Usil Bailey: lol
  • [13:43] Zai Lynch: lol
  • [13:43] George Linden: Zai that's the kind of guideline where, it makes 100% sense, but as soon as it's implemented, it will have to be enforced; that would surely require a committee to manage in order to work (then we WOULD get lots of IMs about objects here) so I will take that idea down also and tuck away, as it's dependent on the first topic you mentioned X)
  • [13:43] Zai Lynch: ah ok ^^
  • [13:44] Jezzie McCellan: I think that the freebie store is going to be an ongoing concern, and not something that we will just start and let it go
  • [13:44] Usil Bailey: Well I know one thing ,,as smart as you people are ,,this will turn out great :)
  • [13:44] Zai Lynch: woot!
  • [13:44] Jezzie McCellan: smiles
  • [13:45] Simon Kline: so with categories should we brainstorm some over the next week and see if there's a common ground
