Marketing - Basic

Overview

This list of requirements is part of the Second Life Certification project. It is an effort to create a list of specific skills required for persons to become certified in basic marketing.

Audience

Persons who wish to demonstrate competence in and knowledge of basic Second Life Marketing

Prerequisites

To start the certification process for basic Second Life marketing, a person should have good knowledge of the Second Life interface and operation, and he/she should be familiar with Second Life “shopping”, both in-world and through e-commerce websites related to Second Life.

It’s recommended the person has a certain case which he or she can use to practice the marketing skill.

Criteria for testing to basic level

In the basic skill sets a person should demonstrate a mastery of basic marketing tasks. The following categories provide the basic categories.

Broad Overview and Most Basic Skills

  • What is marketing?
  • The 4 P's of marketing
  • Basic SWOT analysis
  • Budgets and targets

A person should provide a basic understanding of what marketing actually is, and be able to use the marketing mix (also known as the 4 P’s of marketing) together with the SWOT analysis to develop a basic marketing strategy for a product and/or service.

After having developed a basic marketing strategy, they should be able to set targets and make up budgets, and afterwards analyze their marketing strategy and sales in order to be able to improve these and get their foreseen targets.

Understanding what marketing is

A person should provide a basic understanding of what marketing is. He/she should be familiar with basic marketing terms.

The marketing mix (4 P's of marketing)

  • Product
  • Place
  • Price
  • Promotion

A person should be able to identify the separate parts of the marketing mix in their range of products and/or services, and be able to develop a marketing mix for these using the 4 P's of marketing.

Basic SWOT analysis

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Threads

A person should be able to analyze their marketing position by doing a SWOT analysis; they should be able to analyze the strenghts and weaknesses of their own products and/or services, and know how to analyze the market looking for opportunities and threads.

After having done a SWOT analysis, a marketeer should be able to propose a strategy to make optimal use of the facts discovered during the SWOT analysis.

Budgets and Targets

  • Setting up budgets and targets
  • Analyzing results

A person should demonstrate his/her knowledge of how to set targets for short and mid-long term, and how to analyze the results on the end of these terms.

Afterwards they should be able to analyze why they made or did not make their targets, and come up with a strategy to improve.
