Release notes are a list of features and bug fixes added to new versions of Second Life. (Note: The website secondlife.wikia.com also keeps an archive of Release Notes, especially for very old versions.)

The world of Second Life is composed of two distinct pieces of software that work together:

  • the Viewer, which is the program you downloaded from secondlife.com and installed on your hard drive.
  • Look for the release notes below listed as as Release Notes/Second Life Release/1.xx
  • the Server, which runs the 3D simulation that you walk through and experience.
  • Look for the release notes below listed as as Release Notes/Second Life Server/1.yy

Periodically, the Viewer and the Server are each upgraded to a new version, but this does not always happen at the same time. Therefore each has its own distinct Release Notes for the date it was upgraded.

If you open the Release Notes from inside your viewer, it will automatically go to the right page. (What do the numbers in a release version mean?)

For power-users, you may be using an early release of the next upcoming version, which is still undergoing development. Look for those release notes under the section for Release Candidates or Beta Versions below.
