KBcaution.png Important:
Second Life Viewer Support Policy - As described in T's March 2009 blog post, our policy is to support the newest Official Viewer, the previous Official Viewer, and the last released Beta or Release Candidate Viewer - e.g. Viewer 2 (2.1.0), Viewer 1.23 (1.23.5), and the last Beta version, 2.1.1 Beta.

Because we will only support the current version and one version back, 60 days after the release of a new Official Viewer, the oldest Official Viewer will be deprecated.

Note: At this time, Viewer 1.23 remains an exception to the above-stated policy, as there are no immediate plans to deprecate it. As a result, we are currently supporting Official Viewers 2.1.0, 2.0.1 and 1.23, as well as the 2.1.1 Beta Viewer.

For further information, as well as installer download links, please see the Supported Viewers wiki page

Release notes are a list of features and bug fixes added to new versions of Second Life. The Second Life system is composed of two distinct pieces of software that work together:

  • The Viewer, the program you downloaded from secondlife.com and installed on your hard drive. See Release Notes/Second Life Release/1.xx below.
  • The Server, that runs the 3D simulation that you walk through and experience. See Release Notes/Second Life Server/1.yy below.

Periodically, Linden Lab upgrades the Viewer and the Server to a new version, but not necessarily at the same time. Therefore each has its own distinct Release Notes for the date it was upgraded. (See What do the numbers in a release version mean?)
Some power-users may have an early release of the next upcoming version, one that is still under development. Look for those release notes under the section for Release Candidates or Beta Versions below.

(Note: The independent website secondlife.wikia.com also keeps an archive of Release Notes, especially for very old versions.)
