Release notes are a list of features and bug fixes added to new versions of Second Life.

However, the world of Second Life is composed of two distinct pieces of software that work together: one is the Viewer, which is the program you downloaded from secondlife.com and installed on your hard drive. The other is the Server, which runs the 3D simulation that you walk through and experience. Periodically, the Viewer and the Server are each upgraded to a new version, but not always at the same time. Therefore each has its own distinct Release Notes for the date it was upgraded.

Finally, there are several kinds of Viewers! So you will need to find the viewer you are using in the list below. (If you open the Release Notes from inside your viewer, it will automiatically go to the right page.)

  • Most residents use the official download available on the secondlife.com website. You will see this listed as Release Notes/Second Life Release/1.xx
  • Some early testers will use the viewer which is still a Release Candidate, and these are listed below appropriately.
  • Power users sometimes help test a First Look or Public Nightly viewer, which are still undergoing development and too early to release widely.

Secondlife.wikia.com also keeps an archived list of Release Notes, especially for viewers older than version 1.18.0.
