User:Torley Linden
Friendly greetings! I'm Torley, you may've heard I love watermelons. It's true.
I started my Second Life as a Resident (affectionately abbreviated as "Resi") in 2004 before working for Linden Lab, and grew very passionate about making our world a better place for you to live. Learn Second Life fun & fast... |
What I do
I'm on the Community Team.
- I make video tutorials like this:
<videoflash>9lTT-GFuQ70</videoflash>
- I also nourish content creativity — Texture Tools, Guide to High-Quality Photography, etc.
- You can call me an avid photographer of inworld beauty, and spontaneous performance artist.
- I've been known to wax philosophical and positively motivate others. Evangelizing how Second Life can improve your First Life is definitely a fave topic for discussion.
- Additionally, I specialize in connecting seemingly unrelated pieces together and not just observing, but sharing eclecticism that gets missed!
I also share regularly on the Official Second Life Blog, with 150+ posts made.
For more info about me, see Torley Lives, my personal blog.
These are some of my free textures:
Stuff I'm transitioning from
I enjoyed doing this, but do less of it now:
- I develop communications — blog, Issue Tracker (learn more), wiki, etc.
- I'm in Studio Blacklight, helping devs to identify and repro critical pain points.
- I'm our community-facing representative for WindLight (killer skies & kickass environments).
- I'm involved with the inworld Resident eXperience, including our user interface — see Dazzle! — and exploring Second Life.
Other stuff I've done
Not a complete list, but if you're interested in history, you may also like to know:
- I used to moderate the Second Life forums with our ResMods.
- I worked with Residents to develop mainland Infohubs (those blue i's you see on the World Map).
- I wrote portions of F1 Help (pre-Knowledge Base), specifically the Avatar Customization, New Features, & Explorer's Guide. Jack, Jeska, & Cyn did most of the work — I was just happy to help. :)

How to contact me
BE SURE to read this because it's ultra-important!
I prefer simple email. torley at lindenlab dot com is my address. I get a lot of correspondence. As a general rule, I can't respond unless your message is directly about video tutorials, but I try to read everything I get. Requests to check out places, eclectic antics, and such are usually saved for personal relaxation on weekends.
Please do not send me IMs and notecards expecting a reply, they get missed because I'm busy working. I don't want to waste your time, nor mine. I often have to login to film a video tutorial/repro a bug/attend a meeting, then logout. Pardon me if you see my avatar but I'm not interacting — it just means I'm focusing on immediate tasks.
If you want to chat with me inworld, Office Hours are your answer. I love having visitors. Please accept my advance apologies I'll likely not be able to attend events I'm invited to. Maybe someday when my Second Life's work is done. ;)
Torley in other places
I like social networking. You can add me on:
These are 3rd-party sites, so I can't reply to serious work-related matters on them, with the notable exception of video tutorials & related discussion which transcend Second Life.
What I can't help you with
Anyone is free to contact me! However, please note I most likely can't give account-specific assistance or forward help requests (e.g., inventory loss, can't login, etc.); the right place for these is our Support Portal. Nor can I reply to emails concerning legal, abuse, or other matters I don't know about.
My work queue is overflowing and to add to that would mean to slow down the many, many responsibilities I've already committed to. Questions about my direct duties get higher priority, especially if only I can answer them. And there are times when frequently-asked questions get turned into resources... see my FAQ.
Thanxies graciously for understanding. :)
Also good to know
- Please be aware chat and IMs you send me MAY NOT BE PRIVATE — my screen is sometimes recorded and broadcast on the Internet when I'm teaching classes, doing demos, testing, etc.
- I don't add to my Friends list because I find it too time-consuming to manage contacts.
- Generally, it takes me about 1-2 weeks to get to received inventory items. I like to sit down, sort them out, and enjoy.
- My screen is often crammed with windows because I'm working on various things inworld. This means I prolly won't see your chat in the open. I apologize if this is so. If I'm available to talk, I'll be very chatty!
- I usually don't blog about stuff (neither professionally nor personally) on request. I already have a long list of topics I'd like to get to "someday" and am inundated in ideas, so thanks in advance for your suggestion, but please understand I most likely won't be able to fulfill your request — unless by the wonder of synchronicity, it happens to already be on my list!
- I love public speaking because I've overcome agoraphobia. I'm enthusiastic, informative, and vibrant — among other things — so if you'd like me to do a talk, use the Speaker Request form please.
- And if you'd like to do an interview, send an email to our Press Contact.
